Os aços resistentes à abrasão da classe 450 HB foram desenvolvidos para operações em ambientes onde ocorre desgaste excessivo, sendo estes aços martensiticos de elevada dureza e uma difícil soldabilidade. Este trabalho propôs-se a otimizar os parâmetros de soldagem do processo FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) através da análise do projeto de experimentos (Design of Experiments - DOE) utilizando a Metodologia de Superfície de Resposta (Response Surface Methodology – RSM). Após a determinação dos parâmetros de soldagem ideais, foi realizado a caracterização mecânica e metalúrgica de uma junta soldada com estes parâmetros a fim de certificar-se das propriedades da junta com parâmetros de soldagem otimizados.

There is a strong need in North America and other major steel producing markets where major capital investment in new equipment has been minimal over the past several years to make improvements to existing casting machines. In many cases, very cost effective improvements can be made to existing equipment in order to maximize the efficiency and production of an older designed continuous caster, a classic caster. SMS Group and its predecessor companies have been maintaining continuous casting molds for over forty years. This experience has allowed SMS Group to intimately understand the advantages and disadvantages of each design. The most vital component of the continuous caster is the mold copper design, as it has the most influence over the ability to cast a quality product. Updating to a modern copper design is less complicated than most steel producers think and the benefits are significant. Premium mold coatings such as UniGuard® and NanoGuard® allow casters to guard against exposed copper and wear while producing quality products for record campaign lengths.

Nowadays the sinter cooler often becomes the bottleneck of the sinter production, with outdated equipment leading to low productivity and high operation and maintenance costs. Furthermore valuable energy is simply destroyed in the cooler, which is not compatible anymore with a cost efficient and environmentally friendly sinter production. Paul Wurth has developed and improved two types of coolers, the annular cooler and the shaft cooler which offer flexible solutions to the specific situation of each client. The classic design of the annular cooler was completely revised and is now composed of a rigid ringframe construction as opposed to the traditional design with individual sintering cars, avoiding the typical problems of centering. Additional features of the PW annular cooler are the low air leakage rate and the increased effective cooling surface due to the removal of dead areas. This leads, in addition to the lower weight, to lower operating costs and a smaller space requirement. The shaft cooler stands out with an even smaller space requirement and a lower sinter outlet temperature because of a very long residence time of the sinter inside the shaft. Its development into a pure counter flow cooler aims at maximizing its energy efficiency, as it is designed as a system with a very low demand for cooling air, high air discharge temperatures and highly reduced dust emissions. For both cooler types flexible heat recovery solutions can be offered. These solutions include the supply of hot combustion air to the ignition hood burners and the sinter strand, the production of steam for the clients steam grid or the production of electric energy.

Na conformação de plásticos de alto desempenho, cuja demanda cresce continuamente nos setores automotivo e de eletrodomésticos, é necessário aços com elevada resistência mecânica e excelente polibilidade. O aço DIN 1.2711 e suas modificações são materiais encontrados no mercado que atendem tais necessidades, porém não foram projetados para essa aplicação. O presente trabalho discute as características de um novo aço desenvolvido especificamente para moldes plásticos de alto desempenho. Foram produzidos em escala piloto, dois lingotes de 55 kg, sendo um deles o DIN 1.2711 que serviu de referência, e o outro com a nova composição química. A curva TRC dos materiais foi determinada por dilatometria, e sua usinabilidade avaliando o volume de material removido em relação ao desgaste da ferramenta de corte em fresamento. Caracterizações microestruturais por MO, MEV e dureza também foram realizadas. O Novo Aço apresenta elevada homogeneidade microestrutural e de dureza, boa temperabilidade e usinabilidade superior ao DIN 1.2711. A segunda etapa constou na produção de um bloco forjado em escala industrial a partir de um lingote de 35 toneladas, e na validação dos dados experimentais em empresas fabricantes ou usuários de moldes, as quais comprovaram a superior usinabilidade do Novo Aço em aproximadamente 50% ao DIN 1.2711. Devido à boa combinação de propriedades de manufatura o Novo Aço se torna uma interessante opção para o aumento da competitividade das ferramentarias e usuários finais de moldes plásticos.

With the advent of modern HRM ( Hot rolling mills) with capacities beyond 5 Million tons with corresponding enriched CRM (Cold Rolling Mill) capacities, the throughput per hour exceeds invariably beyond 50 coils per hour making it possible to manage, track, handle, transport, store and dispatch inevitably with an automation system supplemented by corresponding software and hardware. This is true with respect to the production of Cold rolled Annealed, Galvanized, Continuously Annealed, Galvalume, CRGO, CRNGO and Colour coated coils which need total care in handling, tracking and dispatch. Understanding the above needs precisely JSW, Vijayanagar, India, has rightly gone in for a total automatic Yard management system and ASRS wherein the coils are handled as much as possible automatically in cradles without any damage insuring the receipt of coils to the customer as was produced. This CRM 2 has been commissioned and is operating with maximum automation with least manpower and max productivity with assured quality and safety. Pesmel OY Finland had the opportunity to Design, Supply and Commission this system which is first in the country and this technical paper analyses the above project as a case study enlisting the sound technical aspects as well as emphasis on the techno economics with assured ROI (Return on investment) and enhanced efficiency.

Devido à descoberta de petróleo em um gigantesco reservatório situado na região litorânea entre os estados de Santa Catarina e Espírito Santo, a malha dutoviária brasileira irá aumentar consideravelmente nos próximos anos, assim como a necessidade de novos sistemas dutoviários capazes de transportar óleo e gás a pressões cada vez mais elevadas. A soldagem de tubulações no Brasil ainda é realizada de forma manual com processo ao Arco Elétrico e Eletrodo Revestido, fortemente dependente da habilidade do soldador; com a utilização de soldagem robotizada, tem-se maior controle dos parâmetros de soldagem, com possibilidade de obtenção de juntas de boa qualidade, além do ganho considerável em produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a tenacidade ao impacto charpy na ZTA de juntas soldadas do aço API 5L X80 utilizadas para transporte de petróleo quando submetidas a processo FCAW-G robotizado com o arame AWS E111T1-K3MJ-H4 para passes de enchimento e acabamento, com Ar + 25%CO2 como gás de proteção, e processo GTAW com o arame ER80S-Ni1 para passe de raiz, utilizado Ar + 25%CO2 como gás de proteção. Os resultados obtidos são comparados com o processo SMAW manual, utilizando como consumíveis os eletrodos AWS ER 7018 e E9010-G; as soldagens foram realizadas na posição plana e vertical ascendente; com os resultados obtidos de energia absorvida em ensaio de impacto charpy, com entalhe localizado na ZTA, foram correlacionados estes valores com a microestrutura presente na ponta do entalhe dos corpos de prova.

In October 2013 JSW Steel decided to place an order to Primetals Technologies Austria (former Siemens VAI Metals Technologies) for the installation of a comprehensive Level 2 process optimization system for more than 20 existing production facilities of various suppliers. For SMS-I new L2 systems are provided for two hot metal pretreatment stations, three hot metal desulphurization stations, three ladle furnaces, two 1-strand slab casters, a ladle tracking system as well as a shop supervisory system. Additionally the existing L2 system for one 1-strand slab caster is being upgraded in the course of the project. In SMS-II new L2 systems for the 7 hot metal desulphurization stations, 4 ladle furnaces, 1 new RH vacuum degasser, ladle tracking system and a shop supervisory system are supplied. Despite of the challenging time schedule the commissioning of the single facilities started within less than 12 month after contract effectiveness. The installed Level 2 process optimization systems together with the achieved results are described in this paper.

Primetals Technologies has always been a driver of innovation in steelmaking, especially by providing sophisticated process expert models for continuous casting machines. This capability is demonstrated by recent advancements in automation solutions that include: DynaPhase, Dynacs 3D, and DynaGap. This state-of-the-art suite of dynamic secondary cooling and soft-reduction packages take into account thermodynamic effects such as shrinkage and phase transitions, and thereby significantly contribute to direct quality improvements during the solidification phase in the continuous casting process. Speed Expert calculates an optimum casting speed for every casting situation, and additionally recommends a strand speed so that the point of final solidification is positioned at the end of a segment for optimum soft reduction. In the case of steel grade changes, the Intermix Expert precisely calculates the chemical properties of the mixed steel, thereby minimizing losses due to deviations from required specifications. The Nozzle Expert is a new model that detects clogged nozzles and broken hoses in secondary cooling systems. The first installations were highly successful and customers are pleased with impressive reductions in maintenance costs and improved steel quality. This paper describes these innovative process automation solutions and gives an overview about the successful results achieved within the first installations.

Em coquerias, o período compreendido entre o início de operação até a desativação devido final de vida útil é relativamente longo. Torna-se tarefa muito difícil determinar-se o tempo exato de desativação por degradação uma vez que as coquerias possuem muitos fornos tipo batelada e o grau individual de degradação varia de acordo com as condições operacionais e método de preservação aplicados. Apesar dos cuidados adotados na operação e manutenção das coquerias, torna-se inevitável um desgaste inexorável em suas estruturas com o passar dos anos, com progressivo decréscimo na capacidade eficaz de produção até a sua paralisação. Tendo em vista o elevado custo envolvido na construção de novas coquerias, torna-se prioridade para as siderúrgicas prolongarem ao máximo a vida útil das baterias existentes, adotando o tipo de reparo adequado a cada fase da vida da bateria. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever os tipos de reparo em baterias de coque disponíveis, visando restaurar as estruturas e recuperar a capacidade produtiva das coquerias, respeitando as normas ambientais vigentes.

Na operação do alto-forno é comum observar flutuações em seu comportamento, seguindo o ciclo de vazamento de gusa e escória. O acumulo de liquido no cadinho e sua influência no aumento da força hidrostática são as principais causas dessa flutuação.O cadinho é uma parte crucial na operação do alto-forno por muitas razões. No entanto, por ser o local de acumulo de gusa e escória, este deve ter volume suficiente e facilitar uma drenagem sem distúrbios. Por isto, o estado do redutor/combustível, chamado “homem morto” desempenha uma importante função. Este trabalho apresenta uma breve revisão sobre os principais indicadores do estado interno do homem morto no cadinho do alto-forno.

A mathematical model of heat transfer and solidification for a continuous casting of round billets was developed. The water flux density of the secondary cooling zone was experimentally measured, using an apparatus in industrial scale with two types of nozzles, flat jet and full cone jet. The profiles of water distribution were applied on the mathematical model. The results showed that the water distribution is not uniform in both longitudinal and angular directions owing to the unevenness of the spray and to the curvature effect of the round billet. This non-uniformity causes important variation of the heat transfer coefficients and superficial temperature of the billet, especially in the first cooling zones, where the temperature is higher. The mathematical model was used to simulate a change of nozzle type in the first cooling zone. The results showed that the heat flux and superficial temperature variations were reduced with a full cone jet nozzle in comparison with the flat jet nozzles.

After almost half a century of experience in using DRI/HBI in electric arc furnaces (EAFs), and taking into account the decrease of natural gas cost in the USA, it is interesting to revisit some trends and controversial issues around this alternative iron source. This paper reviews aspects like the evolution of iron ore quality and its influence on EAF operation; DRI stockpiling and transport, regarding the risk for selfcombustion; optimum charge design; cold DRI/HBI charging (fifth hole, bucket, transporter); hot charging (ways and results); carbon content, metallization and silica in DRI/HBI, and its influence on EAF operation and performance; oxygen / carbon balance; chemical energy and DRI/HBI charge.

Un objetivo de seguridad y calidad en los moldes de la colada continua de Siderar fue la de tener un menisco estable y controlado. A lo largo de los distintos periodos de inversiones y mejoras, el control de nivel de Siderar logro como objetivo contener su variación de nivel de acero en el molde en un rango de variación menor a +/-2 mm y con una velocidad de cambio inferior a 1,5 m/segundos. Esta etapa trajo una relativa mejora en los aspectos mencionados (calidad y continuidad operativa) pero el hecho de tener como sistema de medición de nivel un sistema radiactivo (fuente Co60 y contador de centelleo) mantenía serias limitaciones en ambos rubros dado que este sistema no diferencia la interface escoria /polvo colador con el menisco de acero. Este trabajo tratará de mostrar y contar las tareas de desarrollo y aplicación de esta nueva tecnología, hoy vigente en la nueva Colada Continua N° 2 (CCD2) y en etapa de puesta en marcha de la CCD1.

A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. The cohesive zone in the blast furnace is largely affected by the softening and melting behaviour of ferrous burden because of its vital role in the blast furnace process. The Visual High Temperature Methodology (VHTM) has been given to study the softening and melting behaviour of sinter, two kinds of lump ores and acid pellet intuitively. Before softening, both two kinds of lump ore swelled and more serious for lump ore B because of its denser structure than lump ore A. The softening and melting temperature intervals are different from one another and this phenomenon contributed to the gas permeability of ore layer in the cohesive zone since the ‘ore window’ has formed. Besides, the softening and melting behaviour of mixed burdens have been studied, where it has been found that the softening and melting characteristics of mixed burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is better than mixed burden B (consisting of sinter and lump ore B) and mixed burden C (consisting of sinter and acid pellet) despite the poorest characteristics of lump ore A. The reason is that the high temperature interactivity between lump ore A and sinter is much better than lump ore B and acid pellet. The high temperature interactivity is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity and contact condition. A research team at the Iron and Steelmaking department at Primetals Technologies has established new upgrading measures for improving the efficiency of the beneficiation process in ironmaking plants, relying largely on pre-existing equipment. After the upgrade, the iron content in the final iron ore concentrate was shown to be significantly higher. Remarkably, the costs for employing the respective measures are surprisingly low.This case study is based on a Kazakh iron and steel producer, whose beneficiation process is currently generating a magnetite concentrate with a final iron content of 65.65 per cent. The study shows that the implementation of Primetals Technologies’ intelligent modification measures to the current beneficiation process, the realisation of more effective dewatering, and the utilisation of an innovative binder lead to an increased iron content in the resulting pellets, reaching a concentration of 69.17 per cent (iron ore concentrate) and 66.5 per cent (pellets).The current operation consists of three closed circuit grinding stages, four stages of low intensity magnetic separation, vacuum disc filters and straight-grate pelletising. By dividing the slurry after the second stage of grinding and the third stage of low intensity magnetic separation, it is possible to divert the more iron-rich fines before they would enter the third grinding stage and the fourth stage of magnetic separation. This then reduces the load on the existing third stage ball mill. Afterwards, the ground material is treated in an additional low intensity magnetic separator and mixed with the previously diverted fraction of the fines. An improved filtration procedure, combined with the application of a highly sophisticated binder, further reduces the amount of additives needed, so that a genuine direct reduced (DR)-grade iron concentrate is produced as a result.All laboratory, pilot and pelletising test work was executed at Primetals Technologies’ laboratories in Austria.CITATION:Martens, J, Petzold, L and Hiebl, B, 2017. This paper presents an overview of ArcelorMittal iron ore mines including iron ore typologies and the annual production of each unit. With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure.
