Pig iron and silicospiegeleisen were produced experimentally from a very low-grade manganiferous iron ore from Steep Rock, Ontario, by a two-stage electric smelting process. The most favourruble operating conditions were determined for each stage. Cement clinker then was made by calcining the slag from the second stage of smelting, with additional limestone and alumina. (This slag would normally be a waste material). The cement clinker produced had the composition of commercial Portland cement, and met the physical test requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Specification A5-1951 for normal Portland cement as well as could be expected for a material produced on .such a small scale.

A research program to aid development of better and more efficient methods for producing petroleum and increasing its ultimate recovery from underground formations is an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines on conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Economic, efficient production of recoverable oil and gas from a reservoir depends to a great extent upon the best and most accurate information that can be obtained from a study of the reservoir rock and its fluid contents. Information on oil and water saturation is pertinent and essential in wildcat, extension, and pool wells for good reservoir operations and prediction of performance. This report presents results of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of core recovery and degree of drilling-fluid contamination occurring during cable-tool coring operations using oil-base mud. Representative core samples were obtained from 6 major oil-producing sands in 8 fields of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Field-mixed, oil-base drilling mud was used for the first coring test, and lightweight, premixed oil-base mud, with an organic chloride tracer added, was used in coring eight other wells. Tracer analyses were made to determine contamination of core by drilling-fluid filtrate. Core analyses, including oil and water content and minimum interstitial water-saturation tests, were made on selected core samples to compare and evaluate water saturations determined by the two methods.

Tracing of 'float' against the latest ice-flow directions ha!' led to or assisted in discoveries of several mineral deposits in Canada at lP.ast since 1891, e.g., fluorite and corundum in eastern ?Ontario, Steeprock and Josephine iron ore in western Ontario, Malartic, Fisher-Quebec, and Lamaque gold ore, and Vendome zinc ore, in western Quebec, Sullivan zinc and lead sulphides in British Columbia, Orvan Brook or New Calumet sulphide deposit in New Brunswick, Lynn Lake nickel sulphide de-posit in Manitoba, etc. Pebbles or ore boulders whose source has not yet been found include diamonds in the Great Lakes region and ?sulphides in several localities in Ontario and Quebec. Complexity of transport of ore boulders, including non-glacial transport, may be the explanation. Tracing of ore boulders requires knowledge of the Pleistocene history of each particular area (ice flow directions, their ?changes during glacial oscillations, existence of pre-glacial lakes with ice-rafted boulders, later interference by streams, lakes, mass movements). Important also is distinction of till from similar non-glacial deposits and knowledge of the bed-rock geology. Quantitative methods, e.g., pebble counts, maybe applied while tracing magnetite, hematite, or goethite. Fragments of sulphide ores are less abundant in indicator trains, and quantitative methods are less suit-able for tracing them. Heavy-miner-al investigations may give good results for minerals resistant to weathering. Geochemical methods are of value only in the vicinity of ore deposits.

IN processing magnetic taconites several steps of crushing, grinding, classification, and magnetic separation are required to produce a 60' pct Fe concentrate. Usually the final concentrate is in a slurry form of 55 to 70 pct solids by weight and is further characterized by a particle size of 60+ pct —325 mesh. In taconite plants already completed or under construction the conventional method used to obtain pellets suitable for blast furnaces is to filter the concentrate slurry, ball the filter cake, and then harden the green pellets in a traveling grate or in a vertical shaft furnace. Large tonnages must be handled in minimum floor space, with reduced maintenance and lowest possible operating cost. Filtration must therefore achieve two objectives: I) high filtration rate—in terms of pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filtration area—at a low filtrate solids concentration, and 2) a filter cake moisture that will always permit efficient balling within the normal fluctuations of ' plant operating conditions. If moisture contents are too high, balling may be impossible or result in a mushy ball .without enough green strength for the firing operation. Development work has met these objectives. At low investment and operating costs, filtration rates of 250 to 600 dry lb per hr per ft2 have been attained for concentrates of 60' pct —325 mesh. By combining the disk-type continuous filter with proper agitation, the Agidisc filter produces a homogeneous filter cake, easily discharged from the disk sectors. This application provides the lowest initial cost per square foot of filtration area, minimizes floor space, reduces down time for changing filter media to a negligible factor, and simplifies process control and maintenance for the operator. It is now possible to predict very closely the taconite concentrate filtration rates for a wide variety of conditions—either by experience or with a few simple leaf tests. When balling and pelletizing operations began on a continuous basis, it became apparent that moisture content of the filter cake was a critical factor and must always be controlled by the filter operator below some maximum allowable value. Accordingly the Reserve Mining Co. and the Eimco Corp. joined in a study of the many variables affecting filter cake moisture content. The study was conducted at the Reserve Mining Co. taconite plant at Babbitt, Minn. To process plant tonnage the Babbitt plant utilizes a 6-ft diam Agidisc filter with six disks and an 8-ft diam drum filter with 10-ft face. However, most of the plant filter investigations were made on the Agidisc because of its superior performance. A considerable amount of small-scale test work was first carried out to study more closely the individual variables and ascertain their effect on filter cake moisture content. A general correlation method was then developed which allowed reasonable prediction of moisture content at any operating conditions. This step was made necessary by the fact that in full-scale filtering, operating variables usually interact to produce a combined rather than a singular effect. Studies were then made on the full-scale filters to prove the validity of the correlations developed, and past operating records were examined to ascertain whether or not significant variations could be traced to any single factor or to a combination of factors.

High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

In the period of time allotted to this paper, an attempt will be made to cover a great deal of territory, figuratively speaking, as far as our experience with ammonium nitrate is concerned. In giving this subject the "broad-brush" treatment, it will be necessary to generalize on the major points which at the same time will permit me to avoid, to a great extent, any involvement in the purely technical and theoretical aspects of blasting. The practice of theorizing before a new idea is tried has practically been discontinued in our organization simply because experience has shown that, almost without exception, theories have fallen aside as some new development takes its place. In regard to blasting, logic and experience seem to have little place in this phase of quarry operations. As the use of low cost blasting agents was introduced in our operating practice, a man who had no previous experience in the field of blasting but with sound knowledge in safety procedures was given the responsibility of supervising the drilling and blasting operations. A total lack of experience is not ordinarily recommended as a prerequisite to assuming the responsibilities of a supervisory position. However, in this case it was obviously a wise decision because there were no pre-conceived ideas as to what techniques would or would not be successful.

Someone once said, "The safest mine is one in which no one goes into." We all recognize this as being perhaps wishful thinking. We also recognize in it a certain amount of truth and an ultimate goal if we are optimistic. All of us are aware of the many things that have been done, are being done and will be done to reduce manpower in mining. For those of us; who are optimistic about this ultimate goal it would appear from the records-we are more than well on our way to the so called safest mine. Let us see what has been done in the past 20 years. T e period from 1935 to 1956. For example in the coal mining industry: In 1935 there were employed 462,903 men who produced an average of 805 tons per man per year or 4.50 tons per man per day. In 1955 there were employed 225,093 men who produced an average of 2,064 tons per man per year or 9.84 tons per man per day. There are no comparable figures compiled for the metal mining industry as a whole that can be broken down in this manner. However, from examination of figures available for different groups in metal mining there is a trend similar to that in coal mining. No-dbout the above figures reflect the intense development and perfection of machines and mining systems to tear out, transport and process our mineral wealth. The figures also show the mining industry has been able to double its production and at the same time reduce its manpower by half. When you compare the number of men employed today with the number which would have been employed 20 years ago to gain todays production at that time it become apparent that greater safety has been accomplished. For example the years 1935 to 1956 for all mining show. In 1935 there were approximately 649,226 men employed in mining and reports show 1,399 fatalities and 74,913 non-fatal injuries. In 1955 when there were 313,883 men employed in mining 496 fatalities and 25,365 non-fatal injuries were reported. To have produced the same tonnage of material in 1935 that was produced in 1955 it would have required the employment of approximately 1,298,452 men. 2,798 could have been fatalities and 149,826 could have had non-fatal injuries. You can now measure the full impact of what has been accomplished in the past 2o years by the aggressiveness of mine management, the wizardry of our engineering personnel and the thoughtfulness and devotion of our safety people and their programs. Therefore, there is a trend towards the goal of our opening statement. We whoare toptimistic believe this trend will accelerate at a-faster pace. Why? Because anyone engaged in the mining industry today can well afford to invest a minimum of $30,000.00 in capital equipment todisplace the labor of one man. This fact alone is a terrific incentive for mine management to apply and manufacturers to develop equipment of a type to get the men out of the mine. Now you can determine this problem not only becomes one of safety but also one of economics, When productivity is stepped up and manpower reduced management is learning the hard way what it means to them; in the profit and los s column when a few minutes of delay or downtime of costly machines and processes occur. They have learned that fast and efficient communication systems are the best means of combating breakdown, delays, bottlenecks, supply problems, the saving of lives and property and increasing production. One large western metal mine was able to increase Its tonnage by 4000 tons a day by using modernup to date electronic type communication system. The National Coal Board of Great Britain recently allocated 45,000,000.00 to study and develop faster and more efficient communications when a survey indicated what a serious bottleneck poor communication in their present systems of mining turned' out Lobe.

In 1939 the Geological Society of America published a summary of the geology of the ore deposits of the Mississippi Valley region, This volume, edited by E. S. Bastin, contained contributions from the foremost students of the area which described theregionalgeologic setting of the various deposits as wel as the detailed geology as then known. The various ideas as to the origin of the ores were discussed with the general, though not unanimous, conclusion that the deposits were hydrothermal products, Only those deposits in the immediate Mississippi Valley area were considered without any attempt to introduce evidence from other districts generally accepted as being of the "Mississippi Valley type." Since 1939, much new information has come from extended studies of two of the important districts described in the 1939 report andimportant extensions of the known ore have been found. Likewise, concentrated geologic efforts have been fruitful in severa "Mississippi Valley type" districts - both U. S. andforeign - not treated in the 939 paper. The wealth of new field information on the structural and stratigraphic relations of this interesting ore type, coupled with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies of the past 18 years, makes desirable a review of our present knowledge and interpretation of these important deposits which for many years have yielded over 20 percent of the world's annual production of lead and zinc, together with large amounts of fluorspar and barite. No restatement of the details of the geologic evidence willbe attempted here; the interested student is referred to the papers cited. Slide No. 1 shows the distribution around the world of the deposits under consideration. A principal thesis of my remarks is that there is so much similarity in all these deposits that it seems necessary for all of them to have had a similar mode of origin, whatever that may be. Variations in the shape, size and mineralogy of the orebodies give each district some individuality, but there are enough of the "typical" characteristics present in all cases to make classification in the "Mississippi Valley type" agreeableto most geologists. Thus the overall process giving rise to the ore solutions surely was the same for all in the group. Either they all have igneous affiliations or they all do not. Acknowledgment of this kinship between deposits in the various districts offers many advantages in trying to arrive at a decision as to just what the origin may have been, for the amount of guiding and limiting evidence which must fit into the hypothesis is greatly increased over that available in any one district, To a certain extent this was recognized by the authors of Special Paper 24 in treating all of the immediate Mississippi Valley areas together; by expanding the consideration to include ore deposits of this type all over the world the changes of success, i.e., arriving at the correct answer, are improved several fold. Since most of these districts are quite simple structurally, a number of hypotheses might fit the facts in any one of them, but if the facts to be met can safely be drawn from all the districts, then the explanations which will fit all the data are much less numerous. One purpose of this paper is to call attention to the field facts that have been reported from the .various areas which seem to have an important bearing on the kind of ore fluid that was responsible for the ore and on the way it circulated.

IN making a study of the slip deformation and strain hardening of single crystals of aluminum, it has been found that considerable information additional to that provided by the usual metal-lographic techniques can be obtained by the use of the microfocus X-ray method described by Schulz.1 This technique has been applied to crystals both in the state as-grown by the strain-anneal method and after they have been subjected to increasing amounts of plastic strain. Kelly and Wei" have recently reported the use of this method for a study of lineage structure in aluminum single crystals grown from the melt. The crystals, prepared from aluminum of 99.99 pct purity supplied by British Aluminium Co. Ltd., were grown in the form of flat tensile specimens with a gage section of 0.3 by 0.1 in. and a gage length of 2.3 in. The microfocus X-ray tube used provided a focus of approximately 50 half width. Examination of a large number of as-grown crystals showed no sign of any macroscopic defects in the majority of cases. However, occasionally crystals grown by the strain-anneal method did show defects similar in nature to those shown by Kelly and Wei to occur in crystals grown from the melt. In some other cases a more regular appearance of black and white lines, corresponding to valleys and ridges, respectively, in the lattice, was obtained, Fig. 1. This particular crystal was slightly deformed as the lines when present in the image of an as-grown crystal are only barely visible. The angle of tilt of the blocks is of the order of 3. It seems likely that these tilt boundaries arise during the growth of the crystal due to the specimen not being perfectly flat on the hearth of the furnace and straightening under its own weight at the elevated temperatures. For the deformation studies the crystals were strained in a Polanyi-type tensile machine. A typical photograph taken after 1.2 pct elongation of a single crystal oriented with its axis fairly close to the center of the stereographic triangle is given in Fig. 2. The reflection, which is from the (111) planes, is traversed by two systems of parallel lines. These have been identified as traces of the primary (111) slip plane and the (110) plane perpendicular to the primary slip direction. The latter lines correspond to kink bands which could not be detected by the ordinary techniques of

BEFORE discussing some of the technical aspects of the steam generating plants of Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, it might be of interest to go back through history and see the development of steam generation in this public utility. Back around 1902 Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, had three slide-valve engines in-stalled at its Water Street, Halifax, generating station for a total capacity of 1,800 kilowatts. The plant remained at about this size until 1910 and in 1911 a 2,000 kilowatt steam turbine was installed to raise the total capacity of the plant to 3,800 kilowatts. In 1916, a 3,000 kilowatt turbine was installed and one of the slide-valve engines was removed to make a total plant capacity of 6,200 kilowatts. The total demand in the Company's service 8rea was at that time 4,000 kilo-watts.

The T. L. shaft of the Eureka Corp., Ltd., near Adams Hill, Eureka, Nev., was sunk in 1954 and 1955 to permit exploration and development of the lead-zinc-silver ore that had been indicated by drilling. This paper describes the sinking of the 4-compartment, vertical shaft to a depth of 1,127 feet and includes pertinent details of equipment, methods, and costs. A shaft crew of 10 men, supplemented by 13 hoistmen, topmen, carpenter, and shop crewmen, sank and timbered the 1,127 feet of shaft in 630 workdays. Total labor per foot of shaft was 107.95 man-hours. Supplies per foot of shaft included 20 pounds of explosives, 1.61 pounds of drill steel, and 200 board-feet of timber. Power consumption, including that required for pumping, averaged 3,726 kw.-hr. per foot.

Particles of montmorillonite-type clays consist of plate-like clay crystals stacked face to face. Under certain conditions in a suspension, these particles disperse to individual platelets with the formation of diffuse double layers round each platelet. This action has a profound influence on the rheo-logical and other properties of the suspension. This paper describes a test for degree of dispersion and uses this test to correlate changes in dispersion with changes in viscosity and gel strength. The test is of practical value in determining and controlling dispersion in drilling muds. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that the hydration and dispersion of clays, particularly those of the montmoril-loilite type, strongly influences the rheological and other properties of drilling muds, but little has been done to measure either of these phenomena under conditions that exist in drilling muds. The hydration of clays as such has been extensively studied by those interested in clay mineralogy, but in drilling muds it is to be expected that dispersion is at least as important a factor as hydration because of the much higher water-to-clay ratios and the very high degree of mechanical agitation. The term dispersion as generally applied to colloidal systems means the subdivision of large particles to small. Particles of montmorillonitic clays, however, consist of plate-like particles stacked face to face. Dispersion of these aggregates to individual platelets may be expected to have an unusually large influence on the properties of the suspension because of the shape factor, the enormous increase in specific surface, and the pronounced surface phenomena exhibited by the crystal surfaces. It is this form of dispersion that is particularly considered in this paper, -and the term degree of dispersion is used to imply the number of platelets per particle. The term aggregation is used to denote the opposite of dispersion, the association of individual platelets face to face to form stacks. It is important, as Garrison' has pointed out, to distinguish between the deflocculation-flocculation phenomenon and the dispersion-aggregation phenomenon. Flocculation of clay suspensions is characterized by the formation of voluminous sediments that are stable under quite high centrifugal fields. This indicates an edge to plate association of particles to form an open network type of structure, which obviously will have quite a different influence on the properties of the suspension than aggregation of the platelets face to face. The work described in this paper was primarily concerned with developing a test for degree of dispersion in clay suspensions and by means of this test to follow changes of dispersion brought about by addition of electrolytes and to show the influence of dispersion on the rheological properties. The Clay-Volume Test This test is based on the assumption that the greater the number of particles per unit weight of clay in a suspension the greater will be the volume of sediment when it is flocculated under standard conditions and centrifuged. After considerable experimentation the following procedure was established: 1 cc of the test mud vigorously shaken with 100 cc of 1-N NaCl in an ASTM oil centrifuge tube and centrifuged for five minutes in an International No. 2 centrifuge at 2,000 rpm. When drilling fluids of different solids content are being compared, the clay volume is expressed in cc per gram of clay solids, but generally changes in dispersion in a given mud are being compared and it is more convenient to report as cc of sediment. The test is strictly a comparative test, so that it is not necessary to adhere to the conditions specified above, e.g., with field muds a stronger flocculant such as Al2(SO4)3 may be preferable to NaCl.

IN a previous note1 it was pointed out that the available information suggests a distinct correlation between the occurrence of the CsCl-type ordered structures formed in equi-atomic binary alloys of transition elements and the location of the components in the periodic table. A definite increase in the bond strength between unlike atoms, as compared with that between like atoms, is indicated when, in binary alloys of iron group elements, the other component is changed from chromium to vanadium or tantalum, to titanium. Laves and Wallbaum,2 eported a CsCl-type ordered structure for the stable intermediate phase at the equi-atomic composition in the Ti-Fe system (and also in the Ti-Ru and Ti-Os systems). On the other hand, Tagaya, Nenno, and Nishiyama8 found no ordering of this kind in the body-centered-cubic solid solutions in the Cr-Fe system. It was concluded' that the occurrence of a CsC1-type ordered phase of intermediate stability may be expected in the V-Fe system. Preliminary results were described: suggesting that at least some degree of order does exist in the equi-atomic alloy VFe, annealed at 1200° C and quenched in cold water. Using CrK radiation, at least one weak superlattice line was found in the X-ray diffraction pattern which could be indexed as (100). and which disappeared, as expected, when FeK radiation was used. It was found more recently that the impurity phase (presumably VN), previously giving rise to additional X-ray diffraction lines and thus preventing definite indentification of the (111) superlattice line,' can be eliminated by preparing the alloy by arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloy specimen melted in this manner had clean surfaces and showed very littte, if any, nitride phase in the microstructure after annealing in vacuum at 1250°C and quenching. The relative intensity of the (100). superlattice line with CrK radiation was greatly increased and, in addition, a fairly strong (Ill) , superlattice line and even a detectable (210) , super- lattice line was obtained, when the powder produced by filing from the 1250°C annealed and quenched specimen was reannealed in vacuum at 625°C for 1 hr. By using a cellulose acetate film as a filter in front of the photographic film in order to absorb the soft radiation resulting from air fluorescence, the background intensity could be reduced considerably in relation to the intensity of the diffraction lines. All three superlattice lines, (100),, (111)., and (210)a, disappeared, as expected, when a radiation other than CrK, was used.1 For the powder reannealed at 625ºC, the strongest lines of the s pattern also appeared weakly, indicating that during an: nealing at 625°C a small amount of transformation took place from the body-centered-cubic to the u phase. However, since all superlattice lines to be expected in the 0 angle range used were actually very clearly present, it was evident that the high temperature body-centered-cubic phase had transformed into a CsCl-type ordered structure before much s phase could form. Reannealing filings for 1 hr at 700°C resulted in complete transformation into the u phase. After 1 hr at 650°C the transformation into IT was not quite complete, the strongest body-centered-cubic diffraction lines were still present, although fairly weak, and only the (100), super-lattice line was detectable (extremely weak). These findings not only confirm the previous conclusionsL as to the existence of a CsCl-type ordered structure in the Fe-V system, but they also indicate that this metastable ordered structure forms at about 600°C preceding the formation of the stable s phase, while at 1250°C the disordered body-centered-cubic phase is stable. The faint (loo) , super-lattice line previously observed in specimens quenched from 1200°C was probably due to the fact that the quenching of the powder in an evacuated fuse:! quartz capsule was not fast enough to prevent completely the ordering reaction on cooling. The present results conform with the suggestion that the A-B bond, in relation to the A-A and B-B bonds, increases in strength from CrFe to VFe to TiFc. It is, therefore, of interest to compare the measured values of the average atomic diameter for these three alloys with the corresponding average atomic diameters calculated from the atomic radii of the elements concerned. Homestake crushing and grinding, practice-was completely revised during the period of 1951-1953. During the conversion, both crushing plants at the head frames the Ross and the Yates, were changes at each plant involved replacing the two 8K gyratories with a rebuilt, The flow sheet single thirty inch gyratory for primary crushing to four inch. The gyratory discharges to a seven foot Symons standard cone crusher set at 1-1/8 inch opening. The cone discharge goes to Tyrock screens fed by vibrating feeders. Screen openings, are l/2 inch by 5 inches: at the Ross. Plant, and 3/8 inch by 5; inches at the Yates. Screen oversize goes to a seven foot Symons cone brusher converted to the short head type; the crusher setting is 5/16 inch. Crusher, discharge; is closed circuited with the Tyrock screens, The above crushing installation delivers a minus 5/8 inch rod mill feed to the mill bins. The crushing revision eliminated the-180 heavy South African type stamps, which had previously reduced the 2 inch crushing plant product to a minus 5/8 inch feed for the 10 rod mills, and 8 ball and pebble.; mills, other revisions in the mill flow sheet, resulted in 3 identical units of about 1350 tons per day, capacity per unit, Each unit consists of an open, circuit 6 foot by 12 foot rod mill, fed from two 24 in by 48 inch vibrating feeders of the four feeders available per unit. A gathering belt delivers the ore discharge of the feeders to the Transportoweigher, which in turn discharge s, into the rod; mill feed spout. Rod Mill discharge is the feed for the 9 foot by 11 foot ball mill, The ball mill is closed circuited with a 16 foot by 30 foot Dorr Classifier. The Homestake make amalgamator, for coarse gold recovery in the ball mill circuit, made' necessary a 36 inch spiral conveyor between the classifier rake discharge and, the combination drum and double scoop feeder on the ball mill See Figure l - the flow sheet of the two stage grinding units.

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

A method of applying ammonium hydroxide to a drill stem containing hydrogen sulphide gas and hydro-gen-sulphide-bearing oil and water so as to remove the hydrogen sulphide as ammonium sulphide is de-scribed. It was concluded that the method allowed trips with drill pipe filled with sour fluids to be made more safely, more rapidly, and more economically. INTRODUCTION THE DANGER of poisoning rig crews during drill stem tests of sour wells by exposing them to hydrogen sulphide gas is well known in Canada. Concentrations of hydro-gen sulphide in sour gases range from 0 to 40 volume percent. There have been numerous casualties from hydrogen sulphide exposure during drill stem testing. Some have resulted in permanent injuries; in some cases the injuries have been fatal. For example, in Alberta in 1957 there were four deaths and 100 exposures which required medical treatment. These fatalities and injuries indicate the need for a more effective way of handling hydrogen sulphide in oilfield operations.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). The Inland Steel Company operates five underground iron mines in the Lake Superior District. The two largest of these, from the standpoint of productive capacity, are the Sherwood Mine in Iron River and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, both on the Menominee Range of Michigan. It is at these two mines that we have had our principal experience with belt conveyor installations underground, .At the Sherwood Mine, which has an annual capacity of about 450,000 tons, the first conveyor belt installationwas made in 1947 when conveyors were installed in the main haulage drifts on the 1200 ft, level, It was estimated at that time that approximately 5,000,000 tons would be mined from the stopes above the 1200 ft, level and. that if all this material could be moved to the shaft by belt conveyor, the entire cost of operation, including maintenance and the amortization of the equipment, would be about $,05 per ton, which was slightly more than half of what the cost would have been by conventional tramming methods employing locomotives and cars. Now, ten years later, the 1200 ft, level is almost completely mined out and we have actually removed. 5,200,000 tons and. the average cost of transporting this material to the shaft by belt conveyor has been $.095 per ton. Since there has been a substantial increase in hourly rate of pay and also in the cost of materials since 1947, we feel that the anticipated savings were very nearly realized., The 1200 ft, level installation at the Sherwood consisted of two 36" trunk line conveyors 815 feet long and 380 feet long, respectively, deliverying ore to the shaft. These in turn were fed. by three lateral 36" conveyors which paralleled the sides of the orebody, These gathering conveyors passed under draw points to which ore was brought from the stopes by mea S of scrapers or shaker conveyors, Shaker conveyors were used for a number of years in conjunction with the conveyor belt system of haulage but it was finally concluded that with this particular type of ore, the maintenance on shaker conveyors was excessive. Therefore, more recently, we have gone back to scrapers for the shorter distances and. are using belt conveyors in the scraper drifts for the longer distances. After this belt system had been in operation for about three years, it had proved to be so successful that it was decided to proceed with the same system or. a new level to be opened up 200 feet below. Instead of sinking the shaft and driving a horizontal drift to the orebody on the 1400 ft, level, an inclined conveyor drift was started near the shaft at the 1200 ft. level and driven downwards toward, the orebody at a slope of 15 degrees. The conveyor installed in this inclined drift is 36" wide, 990 feet long, is powered. by a 100 hp motor, and is capable of delivering 300 tons per hour to the 1200 ft, level shaft pocket. It is fed by lateral horizontal conveyors on the 1300 ft? 1400 ft., and 1425 ft, sub levels. Wien the inclined drift was started, the rock was scraped from the breast directly to the rock pocket at the shaft. As the distance increased., double scraping was employed, until the advance had reached 350 feet, At this point a portion of the final conveyor was installed, with a scraper slide near the breast, T e drift was then advanced be scraping on to the conveyor until a sufficient distance had been driven to permit the installation of an additional 200 feet of conveyor. This proved to be a very efficient and economical means of moving the development rock to the shaft and obviated the need of using cars or an inclined skip way, At the present time 85 percet of tie entire mine output is being mined below the 1200 ft, level and is delivered to the shaft via the inclined conveyor. The system appears to be working as well and as economically as did the conveyor systemonthe 1200 ft, level.

Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.
