ROTARY kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary according to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. MEASUREMENTS OF KILN TEMPERATURE The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records or automatic control are desired, while optical pyrometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. I shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected from puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly 0° to over 200°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without effect of the flame temperature. There should be some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere. Factors Influencing Temperature Table I gives an outline of the factors that produce kiln temperatures and comments on the possibility of measurement and control. The property of the lava Cap Gold: Mining Corporation is in the Nevada City-Grass Valley mining district about 5 miles east of Crass Valley, Calif. At present (July 1940) the plant is mining end milling about 390 tons of gold-silver ore a day; about 310 men are employed. This paper describes the mining methods used and presents mining costs for 1939, when 60,704 tons were mined by cut-and-fill stoping and 55,676 tons by square-setting.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. Tins paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. CAPACITY Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a give time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: TR = TR80KK'K" [I] in which Ts, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific gravity range - 2.5 to 2.7 - T should. be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppard1 has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5 : 1 : 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for 150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be 1.4: 1 : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. It is best determined from screen tests.

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.

THE Hard Rock gold mine is in the Little Long Lac mining area, Thunder Bay district, northwestern Ontario. It is four miles by road from the town of Geraldton, which is on the Canadian National railway, 180 miles northeast of Port Arthur. The original discovery of gold-bearing quartz veins on the property was made in 1931. Shaft sinking began in the fall of 1934 and approximately 7,400 feet of lateral development on four levels was completed. In 1935, further discoveries were made half a mile west of the early workings, and the No. 2 shaft was sunk in this area in a porphyry zone. In January, 1938, a 20C-ton cyanide plant was completed and began drilling ore from the gold-bearing porphyry orebody. The daily feed was increased gradually to 300 tons in the next six months and a recovery of 97.5 per cent was effected. During the summer of the same year, a new and larger orebody was discovered to the north of the porphyry zone. It occurs in a band of iron formation and contains a high percentage of pyrite and arsenopyrite. Extensive tests were rr.ace on this sulphide ore in the Mines Branch ore dressing laboratory at Ottawa, in the laboratory of Canadian Industries, limited, at Toronto, and later at the mine, to find a suitable method of treatrr.ent. As a result of this research, a Potation plant was added to the original cyanide mill and on November 7th, 1938, differential flotation was used to separate the pyrite from the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore. The pyrite concentrate was re-ground and cyanide:l, and the arsenopyrire concentrate was stored for subsequent treatment. Differential flotation was discontinued in April, 1939, in favour of bulk formation of all the sulphides, and the whole cyanide residue was stored. On March 15th, 1939, a 10-ton pilot roaster was completed and rests were conducted on the arsenopyrite concentrate and the bulk concentrate. The results obtained led to the building of two roasters of the same type, large enough to roast all the concentrates. These roasters were put in operation on September 24th, 1939, and the calcines were cyanided in the original circuit.

BARITE (BaSO4) is the most important industrial barium mineral from the standpoint of quantity consumed. In 1938 the amount was 365,000 tons. Its uses are numerous, some of the more important being in the production of pigments, as an inert filler in a wide variety of products, as a weighting material in oil-well drilling muds, in the manufacture of some kinds of glass, and in the production of barium chemicals. The barite studied in this investigation occurs as the massive variety in a shale replacement formation near Magnet Cove, Ark. It is intimately mixed with quartz and small amounts of iron oxide and residual shale. Complete liberation of barite and quartz is not obtained when the rock is ground to 100 per cent through 325mesh. The crude rock with which all test work was done assayed 85.1 per cent BaSO4, 11.11 per cent Si02, and 2.85 per cent R2O3. Its specific gravity was 4.03. It was found in the course of the investigation that the barite contained a small amount of uniformly distributed carbonaceous material, so intimately dispersed that it could not be seen with the microscope, but gave a definite gray cast to the barite concentrates. The color of the barite in polished sections of the crude rock ranged from gray to almost black, while finely ground powder was a reddish gray. The reddish hue was due to the iron oxide present. In 1939, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,* the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Milwhite Company, of Houston, Texas, undertook to study the flotation of barite from Magnet Cove, Ark. Flotation of several southern barite ores had already been investigated by the Bureau of Mines.1 The Magnet Cove barite was unique, however, in that it had to be ground to such an extremely small particle size for liberation. The flotation of nonmetallic minerals in the presence of a large amount of slime is usually very difficult, and when done is an innovation calling for conditions different from those under which granular material is separated. LABORATORY FLOTATION WORK Preliminary investigation showed that the flotation reagents recommended by O'Meara and Coe1 for separating barite and siliceous material were suitable, but much larger quantities of reagents were required to separate such finely divided material. Moreover, it was found that careful control of the frothing was necessary. When oleic acid and sodium silicate were used a voluminous froth was observed at the beginning of a test, and toward the end there was not enough froth to effect complete recovery of barite. The addition of pine oil as a frother gave proper frothing for the duration of the test, and the substitution of coconut fatty acid (crude lauric acid) for oleic acid produced a more heavily burdened froth. NO. 3 winze, the sixth shaft to be sunk on the San Antonio property, is practically a duplicate of No. 3 shaft, which was the main shaft prior to the installation of the larger hoisting equipment in 1939. It is collared on the tenth, or 1,500-ft., level, and goes down vertically to the sixteenth, or 2,500-ft., level, with a loading pocket, spill pocket, and sump below this. It is 1,000 feet east of No. 3 shaft. All ore, men, and materials are handled through the latter. The winze location with reference to the rock formation is shown in Figure 1. (In plan, this section strikes N.30°E. and cuts most of the main orebodies of the mine normal to their strike.) It is collared eighty feet inside the footwall contact of the basalt and cuts through it before reaching the eleventh level. In this location there will be no ore tied up in shaft pillars, as the closest ore to the shaft is on the tenth level, and here it is eighty feet northeast of the collar. The winze headframe and hoist-room straddle the main haulage to the No. 3 shaft, on the tenth level (see Figure 2). At no time during the excavation for the headframe and hoist-room was the general routine work of this haulage held up.

THE internal friction of single crystals of metals is affected markedly by a variety of factors, which, according to the literature, are without influence on the internal friction of polycrystalline metals at strain amplitudes less than 10-5. For example, the internal friction of a suitably oriented zinc single crystal is multiplied by a factor of l00 when the vibration amplitude is slightly increased, and the internal friction of a copper crystal is markedly increased by the application of a stress of 30 lb. per sq. in. for one minute. In this paper it will be shown that these, together with the other phenomena associated with the damping of mechanical vibrations in metal single crystals, can be satisfactorily explained, at least qualitatively, in terms of an atomic mechanism that has been proposed for quite another purpose-that of accounting for slip in metals. The extraordinary agreement between the observed behavior of the metal single crystals and the behavior that could be predicted on the basis of this atomic mechanism leads to the belief that the latter is probably essentially correct. If this is so, it follows that valuable information about the slip process in metals may be gained from measurements of internal friction on single crystals. In this paper the results of the only study to date on the damping of mechanical vibrations in single crystals of metals will be presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The internal friction of a material is a measure of the rate at which the energy of mechanical vibrations is converted into heat. The measure of internal friction used in the present paper is the decrement A, which is defined as the fraction of the energy of vibration lost per half cycle. The measurements described here were .made for longitudinal oscillations at a frequency of 33.5 kc. for the copper crystals, and at a frequency of 39 kc. for the zinc crystals. The method used is that of the composite piezoelectric oscillator. The single-crystal specimens are in the form of circular cylinders ¼ in. in diameter and 1 ½ to 2 ½ in. long. The crystal rods are waxed in a V-block and sawed to the proper length with a fine jeweler's saw. The ends of the specimen are ground flat, and one end is cemented with a very thin film of beeswax and rosin to the end of an x-cut quartz rod which is ¼ in. in diameter and 3 in. long. The length of the specimen rod is determined by the condition that its natural frequency for longitudinal vibration be the same as that of the quartz rod, within 0.5 per cent. The lengths of the specimens are thus different for different orientations of the cylinder axis with respect to the crystallographic axes. When the specimen and quartz rods are thus matched in frequency the adhesive is at a node of stress, and it has been shown experimentally that under these circumstances

AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per 100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series, for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship p to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distributi0n line is [w = Cx" [I]] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and, partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public' general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. THE work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those [ ] of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. WETTING PROPERTIES OF GALENA IN NONAQUEOUS FATTY ACID SOLUTIONS When a "captive bubble"' is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method.* [ ] When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell.2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

More or less unconsciously and from sheer force of habit human beings do many things they probably would not do if the possible consequences of their acts were fully recognized and appreciated. Such carelessness ordinarily could be condoned if human life were not at stake, but it is difficult to understand why intelligent men engaged in the hazardous occupation of mining indulge with the utmost indifference in some habit or continue some custom in violation of State leas and company regulations and under circumstances that may jeopardize not only their own lives but those of scores, even of hundreds, of their fellow workers as well. The old adage that stolen sweets are the best may or nay not have some foundation, but when applied to the practice of smoking surreptitiously in a coal mine, more especially a gassy mine, it is without even remote justification. Although a relatively harmless habit in the proper environment, smoking has been the cause or suspected cause of many gas explosions and black-powder ignitions and has resulted in numerous instances of bodily injury, loss of life, and destruction of property. Likewise, many fires in both coal and metal nines, causing loss of life, have been started by smoking.

IN this survey of the progressive development of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. PHILADELPHIA Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1853, when the Pennsylvania Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1850-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. Two 10 in. by 4-in. timbers are bolted to these plates, the distance between them being adjusted to suit the holes in the winch bedplate, which is bolted to the 10-in. by 4-in. timbers.Two short lengths of 3 in. pipe are welded to each bedpiece at 4 ft. 4 in. centres. THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for ,this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1893, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 30 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1893 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. IN January, 1939, Dome Mines, Limited, purchased a few bars of an alloy drill-steel for the purpose of testing its fatigue resisting qualities as compared with those of a straight carbon-steel then in general use at the mine. A steel of the following analysis was selected: Carbon 1.00% Sulphur 0.022 Chromium 1.26 Silicon 0.17% Phosphorus 0.028 Vanadium 0.1 Manganese 0.32% Molybdenum 0.30 This steel has a tensile strength of 180,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 380, as compared with a tensile strength of 114,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 230 for the standard carbon drill steels, in the as rolled' condition. The result of this test showed that about five times as many runs could be obtained from the alloy steel before failure from fatigue. It was therefore decided to replace gradually the one-inch quarter-octagon carbon steel, then in use, with seven-eighths quarter-octagon alloy steel. In January, 1940, six machines was placed on the seven-eighths steel and this was gradually increased until now (March 15th, 1941) fifty per cent of the steel being used is alloy steel. An O'Donovan furnace is used at the Dome for heat-treating their carbon drill-steel. In this furnace, a magnet withdraws the steel when the critical temperature has been reached, and the operator then places the steel in the quenching tank. Not being able to use this furnace for the alloy steel, the management felt that some means should be developed to determine the quenching temperature without depending upon the operator's judgment of the correct 'colour'. With the assistance of the Canadian General Electric Company, a radiation-type vacuum thermocouple pyrometer was adapted to this purpose, with excellent results; in fact, with this instrument no previous experience in hardening is necessary and results are remarkably uniform.
