"Intrinsic supports installed in mines with limited seam or mining heights have always proven to be difficult when the required support length is longer. To date, three solutions have been used to ensure that the correct length bolt is installed to achieve the required anchorage or to maintain immediate roof material: combination bolts, milled-notch bolts, and hot-notch bolts. The combination bolts use threaded sections and couples, which can be screwed together to form the required length. The primary bolt of choice, to minimize costs and achieve the desired support, has been milled- or hot-notch rebar bolts. These notches can be placed at strategic (required) locations along the bolt axis, so the bolt can be successfully bent and straightened during the installation process. However, these notches can reduce the strength of the bolting system; special reductions are detailed in ASTM F432-13 (2013). Technical advances in steel rolling and forged heading processes have led to the development of a deformed rebar bolt termed, the BORE bolt, which stands for Bendable Oval REbar. The BORE bolt can be bent at any location and straightened during the bolt installation cycle. This support exceeds the minimum designed capacities described in ASTM F432-13 and meets the yield and tensile strength requirements of a full diameter no. 6 rebar bolt. The profile and shape also reduces the resin annulus during the installation process to enhance mixing and shreds the cartridge film to help eliminate glove fingering.INTRODUCTIONThe height or depth of competent strata material, in the immediate mine roof, can be greater than the developed mine openings heights. This is especially true in coal mine openings where 50% of the minable seams in the US are less than 50 inches (132 cm). When this scenario occurs, it can be difficult to insert steel bolts in a solid single length. Figure 1 illustrates what difficulties can be experienced when a roof bolter operator is working and supporting a thin seam coal mine. There are three viable options currently available. Lengths of the bolt can be threaded and a steel coupler can be used between the sections to reach the required depth of anchorage. These systems, called “coupled bolts,” usually require a larger diameter hole to facilitate the larger coupler diameter and can be anchored with an expansion shell, resin, or a combination of both. To ensure that the coupler will develop the tensile capacity of the bolting system, required by ASTM 432-13 Standard Specifications for Roof and Rock Bolts and Accessories (2013), the threaded bars should be completely rotated and engaged into the coupler. Premature failures can occur when the threads “strip out” if not inserted completely."

"Increased demand for light-weighting in passenger vehicles has created a need for strong, light, ductile materials to be used in body-in-white applications. The AA6xxx-series of aluminum alloys are suitable candidates meeting most requirements but can fall short of the formability demands of designers, necessitating an understanding of what controls the formability in this alloy series. This work examines the effect of copper alloying in AA6xxx on the pre-ageing and natural ageing responses of the microstructure and mechanical properties. The changes in microstructure observed by differential scanning calorimetry and hardness testing are related to the work-hardening and strain-rate sensitivity parameters for these alloys measured by tensile testing. An observed asymmetry in the measured strain-rate sensitivity associated with increasing versus decreasing strain rate changes suggests that a different mechanism operates for the two conditions. It is postulated how this asymmetry in strain-rate sensitivity will impact the necking and ductility behaviour of these alloys.INTRODUCTION The widespread use of AA6xxx series alloys in the form of sheets has provided the need for a more thorough understanding of the complex interactions between composition, processing, resulting microstructure and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the alloys. Conventional industrial practices involve the production of rolled AA6xxx sheet (typically 1 mm thick) to be used for body-in-white (BIW) applications for auto body panels (Hirsch, 2004, 2014). The final metallurgical step prior to the shipment of these panels to manufacturers involves a solution heat treatment (SHT) reverting the ageing products of the alloys into solid solution and the product is then shipped to the customer. During this shipping time and while sheets are waiting to be used, the natural ageing (NA) process occurs whereby the strength of the alloys increases resulting in reduced formability. This can result in a product that is unable to meet the formability demands of the automotive manufacturer. As a result, industry has moved towards performing pre-ageing (PA) treatments to prolong the “shelf-life” of the material prior to it having insufficient formability. Once formed into BIW panels, the parts are then painted and subsequently undergo the paint curing heat treatment which consists of a short period of time at medium temperature, typically 20 minutes at 170–190°C. This short artificial ageing (AA) treatment, known as the paint bake (PB), provides additional strength and improved dent resistance for the material, but reduced formability. The PB result is strongly dependent on the PA treatment performed prior to the forming operation. Furthermore, the addition of copper (Cu) to a base Al-Mg-Si composition is known to increase the alloy’s strength. The goal of this work is to study the effect of Cu on strength, strain hardening, and strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) of these alloys, to understand the strength-formability compromise, for two separate heat treatment schedules; one including and one excluding the PA treatment, both followed by NA."

"In 2015 Vale’s Clarabelle Mill began the process change to enable a higher degree of Cu separation. The flowsheet modification was part of a complete divisional flowsheet change being implemented in Vale’s Sudbury Operations. This paper will centre on some of the Operational Readiness (OR) work, culminating in the commissioning of the circuit in March 2017. The emphasis will be on the implementation of an integrated test plan to prepare for the process flow change through the mill.BackgroundClarabelle Mill (CBM) began making a saleable Cu concentrate in 2006 with the installation of the Cu separation circuit. Typical separation rate was 35-40% of Cu in feed reporting to Cu concentrate based on a target Ni concentrate Cu:Ni target of 0.7-0.8. The remainder of the recovered Cu (55-60%) reported to Ni concentrate and was smelted through the Copper Cliff Smelter.In 2013 a capital project, Surface Facility Upgrade (SFU), was implemented to focus on matching the surface plants capacities with the future mine plan to maximize revenues. This was to be achieved by redistributing the metal flow, specifically Cu, through CBM to increase metal unit content through the Smelter. The amount of redistribution of Cu was determined to be based on maintaining a stable Cu to Ni ratio (Cu:Ni) in the Ni concentrate.The change in Cu:Ni ratio in the Ni concentrate would affect the Sudbury divisional flowsheet, and required process changes across the all of the surface plants. The detail that surrounds the flowsheet changes as a whole will not be discussed, but the outcome of the decisions plays a large role in the operational readiness interactions between the mill, its suppliers and its downstream customers."

"In froth flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is critical for a successful flotation process. In present work, an atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) on copper sulfides, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite. The in-situ collected AFM images show that PAX adsorbs on chalcopyrite mainly in the form of oily dixanthogen; while it strongly adsorbs on chalcocite and bornite in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface. The information obtained from the AFM study shed lights on the collectivity and therefore the selection of specific collector for different copper sulfide minerals in industrial practice.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation, which treats the highest throughput in mining industry and produces the maximum economic outcome of any surface chemistry process, has been widely applied for the concentration of copper sulfide minerals, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite. In flotation, collectors are added into the pulp (mixture of water and fine-grained minerals) to selectively adsorb onto the target mineral and render its surface with high hydrophobicity, which is generally beneficial for a strong mineral-bubble attachment and thus a high flotation recovery. Therefore, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process and it has been studied by applying various surface analysis techniques, such as IR (Infrared Spectroscopy), CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). (Poling, 1963; Allison et al., 1972; Mielczarski et al., 1984; Leppinen et al., 1989; Kartio et al., 1996) These studies have revealed a lot of information, such as the reaction, product and mechanism, of the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface. It is also of great interest to directly get the image of adsorbed collectors on mineral surface changing with pulp chemistry, such as pH, redox potential, ionic strength and chemical’s dosage."

"Hecla - Lucky Friday is an underground mine that has been in operation for 75 years and produces from depths over 2.3 kilometers (7,500 ft) below the surface. Technical issues at this depth include high rock temperature and seismicity. The use of new innovative mechanization is being examined for ore production. Principal advantages of mechanization are the reduced exposure of personnel, reduced seismic triggers, and increased efficiency. Lucky Friday has partnered with Atlas Copco to design, build, test, and deploy a mechanical miner for primary ore production. We will discuss the background, concept, development and deployment strategy for a mechanical miner. BACKGROUND The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered over 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the US. The Lucky Friday mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 tonne per day (800 tons per day) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates, and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas."

"Seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits have been identified as important marine metal resources for the future. However, literature on mineral processing of SMS is currently limited, and to date, no research has been published on processing of SMS from either active or inactive hydrothermal vent fields on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge. In this paper, individual SMS rock samples from the Loki’s Castle area were tested. Chalcopyrite, isocubanite and sphalerite represented the main copper and zinc bearing minerals in the SMS samples, whereas the gangue consisted of barite and silica. Based on the X-ray transmission response (XRT), i.e. differences in the atomic number of elements in tested samples, and using portable XRF (PXRF) values of elemental composition, individual particles were classified as a either product (low barium / high to low silicon / high copper and zinc) or waste (high barium / high silicon / low copper and zinc). The classification was based on the elemental composition of the samples with the cut-off grade equal to 0.5% for copper. It was shown that the XRT discrimination analysis correlated well with elemental (PXRF) data classification. The results clearly indicate that X-ray transmission sensor-based sorting can be used a useful technique for preconcentration of SMS rock samples. INTRODUCTION Due to different compositions of investigated samples, sensor-based sorting is a useful technique for preconcentration of different materials. The aim of using sensor-based sorting is to upgrade an ore by reducing the quantity of overall waste material reporting to the next processing stage. This can be achieved by eliminating (reducing) the waste fraction. By applying sensor-based sorting, the energy consumption for particle comminution as well as the required process water and reagents can be decreased. The total volume of the waste rejection leads to a proportional reduction in the total energy costs (Lessard et al., 2014, 2016)."

"Complex technological problems associated with the processing of mineral raw materials require the search and development of new means and ways of thinking. At present, computer cognitive graphics (CCG) are one of the most actively developing areas of new information technologies. The aim of the study was to optimize the cycle of technological evaluation of ores at all stages of geological exploration of deposits on the basis of analysis of geological sampling data using CCG. A new approach has been developed that facilitates optimization of the whole cycle of subsoil exploration. At the gold ore deposit, the results of the geological sampling data were processed by the method of constructing the CCG in the form of a histogram showing the frequency of gold extraction and the average amount of its content. Significant peaks of the metal content in the ore, exceeding the level of the average content in the ore by tens of times, have been revealed. Graphical interpretation of the parameters of mineralization reflects the uneven nature of its variability, which indicates the presence of large, rarely occurs of gold in the ore and the need to conduct studies on a sample of ore of greater mass than for ores with tiny gold. On a sample of 50 kg gold-quartz ore studies were carried out on gravity enrichment. The maximum size found in the gold concentrate was 0.07 mm. In the course of integrated tests in a gravity concentrate, gold particles up to 3 mm in size were found, which predetermined the need to include the operation of gravity before flotation. A new approach to subsoil research is protected by a patent (RU 2620823).The technological problems that arise before the researcher associated with the processing of resistant ores require the exploration and development of new means and ways of thinking. New problematic situations on complex mineral and raw materials objects are practically not amenable to resolution by existing methods. Integration of industrial and information technologies is necessary. At present, computer graphics (CG) is one of the most rapidly developing areas of new information technologies. For example, in scientific research, including in fundamental research, the accent from the illustrative function of CG (the visualization of what is already known) is increasingly shifting towards the use of computer cognitive graphics (CCG) tools (Bashlykov, 2016). The function of the CCG is to obtain a new knowledge with the help of a graphic representation - a cognitive image or at least to promote the intellectual process of the logical acquisition of this knowledge. In this study, cognitive images are used to graphically represent the distribution of valuable components in the bowels of the deposit, characterizing the state of mineral-raw materials."

The understanding of particle surface properties is essential for the study and evaluation of froth flotation phenomena, particularly in the investigation of various chemical or reagent effects. Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) is a method used for the analysis of surface properties of powders for instance in the pharmaceutical industry. To the knowledge of the authors, it has however not been used before in applications related to mineral processing. The DVS technique involves measurement of the water uptake of a relatively small amount of sample as a function of the relative humidity (% RH) in a temperature-controlled environment. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the method and investigate how it can complement existing techniques for surface characterization in mineral processing. Four samples (feed, CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate) from the Cu – Pb flotation process in the Garpenberg concentrator, Sweden, were analyzed by DVS and the traditional capillary absorption technique (Washburn capillary rise). This enabled comparison between the two methods and evaluation of their respective advantages and disadvantages. Both methods give the expected ranking of the hydrophobicity for CuPb concentrate, Cu concentrate and Pb concentrate, but a discrepancy was observed for the feed. Washburn gave a value for the contact angle which was in the same range as for the CuPb concentrate, whereas DVS gave a value for the moisture uptake which was much higher than for the CuPb concentrate. Thus, DVS ranks all samples correctly, but with an unexpectedly high value for the feed whereas Washburn gives good ranking for three samples out of four. Potential reasons for the discrepancies are discussed.

"The recovery of oxide Cu minerals by flotation is a longstanding challenge in the minerals industry, especially for high acid-consuming ores which would not be economical for direct acid leaching. Sulfidization (often using controlled potential sulfidization or CPS) using NaSH (or Na2S) followed by flotation using traditional sulfide collectors is the widely used technique. CPS has certain limitations: a) inability to recover certain oxide Cu minerals because they are refractory to sulfidization, b) high consumption of NaSH (or Na2S), and c) potential health and safety hazards associated with NaSH (and Na2S). Flotation of oxide copper minerals using alkyl hydroxamate (AHX) collector has been studied extensively. Investigations using single minerals and laboratory ore flotation have been conducted in the past to demonstrate the efficacy of alkyl hydroxamates. The technology has been used intermittently in plants. One of the main challenges in plant use has been quantifying the true potential for alkyl hydroxamates for recovery of various oxide Cu species in complex and variable ore systems and identifying the most suitable conditions for optimal use. Quantitative mineralogical analysis using QEMSCAN was used in this study to characterize flotation products lab flotation samples. Analysis of concentrates and tails from hydroxamate flotation and CPS flotation stages demonstrated that certain oxide Cu minerals respond exclusively to alkyl hydroxamates and not to CPS. The hierarchy of interaction of AHX with the various oxide Cu minerals could be inferred from these studies. Finally, these studies also allowed quantification of a group of minerals species, which (erroneously) report as part of the Acid-Soluble Cu [ASCu] but cannot be recovered by flotation, thereby facilitating an estimation of the true recovery potential for alkyl hydroxamate.INTRODUCTIONCopper that is economically recoverable occurs in three major types of ores, which are defined by the modal mineralogy of Cu. For sulfide ores, Cu occurs as sulfide minerals and is satisfactorily recovered by flotation using sulfide collectors. Non-sulfide ores, which contain Cu in the form of oxides, phosphates, carbonates and silicates, described in the industry as “oxide” ores (or ores containing “acid-soluble” Cu or ASCu), are currently treated using hydrometallurgy, which involves leaching with dilute sulfuric acid followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, unless the ores contain acid consuming gangue minerals such as dolomite. For mixed sulfide-oxide ores (i.e. containing both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals) that do not contain acid consuming gangue minerals, Cu values are easily recovered by flotation of sulfide Cu minerals followed by leaching of oxides (only when a leach plant is available). However, when the ore contains acid consuming gangue minerals flotation is required to recover both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals."

"The flotation processes of the Niobec Mine have been affected by a seasonal loss of recovery and a significant increase in reagent consumption over the past few winters. This paper discusses the problem-solving methodology that was used to identify the root causes, to develop solutions and to implement changes that resolved the problem to restore the process to summer-like conditions year-round. Mainly, it was found that the process water was contaminated by phosphates ions, which adversely affected the carbonate pre-flotation, and caused detrimental effects on the subsequent niobium flotation. The phosphate ions were being generated by the process itself, but were consumed by algae in summer conditions. It was determined in laboratory studies that concentrations as low as 5 ppm were enough to affect the circuit and that the multiple additions of process water throughout the circuit was worsening the effect. Also, temperature was found to have an impact on the reagent performance. The performance of the plant was restored by implementing a natural treatment of our process water with a simple cost-free rearrangement of our circuit streams. In addition to that, our extensive geometallurgical program was used to provide ore to the plant restricting phosphate generation in the process. Also, a modification of the collector was developed and introduced in the carbonate pre-flotation that provided improved performance during the periods of low pulp temperature.INTRODUCTION Niobec is one the three major global producers of niobium presently in operation. Situated in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec and in operation since 1976, the site produces ferroniobium (FeNb) to be used mainly in High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel, which is known to have better mechanical properties than carbon steel. The Niobec operation consists of an underground mine, a concentrator and a converter plant. The concentrator concentrates niobium-bearing minerals, mainly pyrochlore and columbite, to produce a high-content Nb2O5 concentrate which is then converted to FeNb in the converter plant by an aluminothermic reaction. The Niobec concentrator flowsheet, which has gone through many expansions and optimisation over the years, consists of grinding, desliming, flotation and leaching steps. The flotation steps are numerous, sensitive and difficult to operate due to the non-selective nature of oxide mineral collectors. Thus, the pyrochlore concentration process at Niobec still faces many challenges and is constantly going through periods of continuous improvement."

"A 2nd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) design was tested by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at a Midwestern underground coal mine. During the study, the roof bolter never operated downwind of the continuous miner. Using a combination of personal Data Rams (pDR) and gravimetric samplers, the dust control efficiency of the roof bolter CAC was ascertained. Performance evaluation was determined using three methods: (1) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to roof bolter concentrations outside the CAC, (2) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter, and finally, (3) using the gravimetric data directly underneath the CAC to correct roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC and comparing them to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter. Method 1 dust control efficiencies ranged from -53.9% to 60.4%. Method 2 efficiencies ranged from -150.5% to 52.2%, and Method 3 efficiencies ranged from 40.7% to 91%. Reasons for negative and low dust control efficiencies are provided in this paper and include: incorrect sampling locations, large distance between CAC and operator, and contamination of intake air from line curtain. Low dust concentrations encountered during the testing made it difficult to discern whether differences in concentrations were due to the CAC or due to variances inherent in experimental dust measurement. However, the analyses, especially the Method 3 analysis, show that the CAC can be an effective dust control device. INTRODUCTION Canopy air curtains (CAC) have been shown to be an effective respirable coal mine dust control for roof bolters in a laboratory setting with dust control efficiencies ranging from 14% up to 75% [Goodman and Organiscak 2001, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. Unfortunately, there is limited information on their effectiveness for controlling respirable coal mine dust in the field. On continuous miners, CAC dust control efficiencies ranged from 23% to 69% [Krisko 1975]. Two underground tests of the CAC on roof bolters demonstrated dust control efficiencies of 35% and 53% [Listak and Beck 2012] before problems occurred with operation of the CAC. Since the implementation of the new respirable coal mine dust limit from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (Code of Federal Regulations, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015), roof bolter CACs are becoming more commonplace in underground coal mines as a dust control tool to prevent roof bolter operator overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. J.H. Fletcher & Co. has been instrumental in delivering an effective design which incorporates the filter, blower, and canopy plenum seamlessly into the design of the roof bolter, resulting in a successful operational roof bolter CAC."

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-economic problems surrounded by sustainability controversies yet continues extraction without considering the balance and finitude of nature. Nature requires restoration of equilibrium if mining and life on earth are to continue. Mining is still practiced according to Agricola’s views and the consequences it has wrought on our planet demand we critically reexamine it from its very core, to its metrics, to its design, to its technology, to how it is taught, and to reconsider its raison d'être in 2017. This paper offers tools to new mining engineers that are required to transform and solve new challenges. The task before us is to formulate an updated core curriculum that meets the demands and realities of the 21st Century. Mining professionals must rethink and reteach how to redesign mines before shovel hits dirt, how to mine with restoration of nature figured in to the mining design. Mining needs a new extractive technology in order to transform the results of its well-known liabilities. Mining has evolved and its future must be different than its past. Our industry is capable of doing this but it needs to be shown the way. INTRODUCTION The statement that ‘mining makes civilization possible’ is of the utmost importance and has the most value to us. We can examine the past and present appropriately to see the future that we are building. Mining must be addressed in a different way that makes a positive difference and improves upon rather than continues to get the negative impacts of the past. See Fig 1. Mining creates disequilibrium in Nature by producing ore, waste, tailing, dilution of resources, toxic, and pollution to its ecosystems. What is next for mining on a limited planet? Delaying the transformation of mining is not an option to developing an updated and modern mining business-as-usual paradigm. It is hurting the essentials of living in a civilization; our livelihood is in danger to the point of unrest in nature as we generate a lot of eco-print by present mining practices. So, we are urged to eliminate this bottleneck in life by employing a different design. This way, we will have a vision on how to sustain our civilization. [1]. This new design, with input from current and future generations, will be our contribution to posterity."

"Recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology have generated considerable interest in multiple industries, owing to flexibility in design and the ability to produce final components in their net shape. The AM of high-strength aluminium alloys has not been widely explored, due to findings of undesirable microstructures leading to short fatigue life and poor fracture toughness; restricting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date. Herein, aluminium alloy AA2024 (Al-3.6Cu-1.2Mg) was additively manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM), with the resultant microstructures and corrosion properties characterised and compared to wrought AA2024-T3. Microstructural characterisation was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealing SLM produced AA2024 included a population of ?-phase (Al2Cu) in preference to S-phase (Al2CuMg) typical of wrought AA2024. Additionally, the corrosion properties were investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation in a range of NaCl concentrations, whilst elemental corrosion rates were also determined (including for open circuit exposure conditions) and quantified in situ with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer coupled with an electrochemical flow cell. Results revealed a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance, and elemental dissolution of AM prepared 2024 relative to wrought AA2024-T3.INTRODUCTION Aluminium alloys remain the preferred candidate materials in applications requiring a balance of low density and strength. The ability to produce net shape components from aluminium alloys has accelerated due to recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology, including selective laser melting (SLM) and powder bed 3D printing. The AM of Al-alloys, including Al-Si-Mg (namely AlSi10Mg), has become widespread commercially in recent years. Alloys including AlSi10Mg offer reliable and reproducible production by AM, however such alloys (and variants thereof) are not high strength alloys. The pursuit of higher strength AM Al-alloys presents significant merit to multiple industries; however, such higher strength AM Al-alloys have not been widely studied to date. The solidification of high strength Al-alloys during conventional (casting) operations needs to be executed in a manner that avoids so-called =hot-tearing‘, which can arise as a result of the solute type and loading. A report on the solidification of a high strength Al-alloy prepared by AM, along with factors related to solidification, was recently covered by Pollock and co-workers (Martin et al., 2017). It was reported that AM of high-strength aluminium alloys (which have to date been principally based on the compositions of wrought high strength Al-alloys) may lead to undesirable microstructures that reduce fatigue life and result in poor fracture toughness; presently limiting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date."

INTRODUCTION Work by Humphris et al., (2002); Ondréas et al., (2009); Barreyre et al., (2012); and Escartín et al., (2015) has identified active and inactive hydrothermal sites along the Lucky Strike segment. The sites that contain the largest accumulation of known sulfides are located between the north and the southern zones (Figure 1), a vent site area that is referred to as the Main Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (Escartín et al., 2015). Hydrothermal fluid outflow has been linked to a shallow fault network (Barreyre et al., 2012). However, specific constraints on fault geometries have not been determined. Other off-axis sites at Lucky Strike, such as Capelinhos (high temperature vent), and Grunnus (inactive?), as well as a low temperature vent field (on-axis), Ewan, have been described by (Escartín et al., 2015). Given the spatial relationship between the Main Lucky Strike hydrothermal field (MLSHF), and the intersection of northern rift faults with the southern rift faults, a structural analysis of this area can provide insight into the fault controls on fluid flow that leads to hydrothermal venting and sulfide precipitation. METHODOLOGY Structural data (dip direction and dip) was determined using Leapfrog Geo 4.0 software. Bathymetric data was obtained from Escartín et al., (2015) and references therein. The bathymetry was imported into Leapfrog Geo (in UTM format) and, using the structural modelling tool, individual measurements with dip direction and dip data were collected with a focus on the northern volcanic rift and the southern central volcano (Figure 2a). All measurements were taken from what the authors consider as normal faults, and to aid the determination of individual measurements a “face dip” map was constructed, where the bathymetry is colored by slope angle (Figure 2b). All measurements are simultaneously plotted on a stereonet generated by the Leapfrog Geo Software. Data were divided into northern and southern, and western and eastern zones to determine the relationship between hydrothermal venting and the structural geometries at Lucky Strike (Figure 2c). Slip measurements for individual faults were determined along the dip of the fault with a measuring tool. Net slip, heave (horizontal displacement), and throw (vertical displacement) was calculated for each of the zones.

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

"Historically the focus at the mineral processing sites has been to improve the production operations, while little focus has been set on how factors, such as the quality of water used in the process affects the metal recovery. Simultaneously increasing public pressure and water scarcity is driving the mining industry to recycle more water back to the process, which in turn leads to accumulation of impurities within the recycled water. This paper presents a concept for a systematic approach on targeting the impurities that have a negative effect on the metal recovery at the flotation circuit by using a novel solution called Process Water Recycling Plant (PWRP). These plants are designed with specific ore type in mind. PWRP produces cost-effectively process water to different target qualities, especially for flotation purposes enabling higher and more stable flotation recovery. It consists of pre-designed and standard water treatment units for a wide range of volumes. The application-specific configuration of units is governed by the water quality requirements, and can be designed according to specific customer needs. Testing has been carried out in order to investigate, which recycling water impurities affect the different ore types and how the metal recovery in flotation is affected as a consequence of the poor-quality water. The results indicate that every ore type is impacted differently and without a good understanding on how the water quality impacts the process performance, adverse effects on the flotation recovery can occur.INTRODUCTION With a focus on where water is used within the mineral processing, it has become evident that even though water is used in several different processes, majority of the water losses within the site occur at the tailings processing and the tailings storage facility. New tailings management technologies that can increase the recovery of water are actively being developed, but the key to improving the efficiency of water use and reducing the operational risks lies in closing the water loops and increasing the slurry density in the tailings processing. With this shift from conventional tailings technologies towards paste and dry stacking, water efficiency is vastly improved, but it might in turn lead to process water challenges with impurities, reagents and fines being recycled and accumulated within the production processes."

"The REFLUX™ Classifier (RC™) consists of a fluidized bed housing, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. This system performs a simultaneous gravity separation and desliming of the feed material, utilising the inclined channels in order to retain the relatively fine dense particles. These particles promote the formation of an autogenous dense medium within the fluidized bed. Relatively large, low density particles are displaced from the fluidized bed and conveyed upwards through the inclined channels reporting to the overflow with other finer particles. Given the hydrodynamic role of both the particle size and density in determining the particle transport through a water based suspension, all gravity separators operate over a limited size range. In the case of the REFLUX™ Classifier, efficient separations can be produced across a very broad size range, from nearly 10 mm down to 10 m, however, for a given application the size range is much more limited. This study was concerned with the processing of dense minerals over a broad size range, and the need for multistage processing. Here the overflow from the first stage cascades to the second stage, incorporating coarse gangue rejection. This approach is shown to deliver remarkably high grades and recovery.INTRODUCTION The performance of the REFLUXTM Classifier (RC™) in beneficiating fine coal is well documented (Galvin, 2012). Although the technology can be applied to relatively fine particles below 0.1 mm, or coarser particles below 2.0 mm or even 8.0 mm (Galvin et al., 2010), in each case the technology is applicable to limited particle size ranges. In coal preparation, the most common size range is 0.25 to 2.0 mm, covering an eight-fold range in the particle diameter. Coal has a relatively low density, typically below 1600 kg/m3, with a significant portion below 1400 kg/m3. In water, the buoyant density difference (~ 400 kg/m3) is therefore low compared to that of gangue minerals (1600 kg/m3) by a factor of 4, enhancing the potential for separation. Thus, in coal preparation, the technology can be applied over a commensurately broader size range, typically up to eight-fold."

"This research represents a shift away from empirical models that lock the industry into 50-year old inefficiencies with little response to operating variability. The mechanistic and intrinsically dynamic mill model under development steps up to a new paradigm using the latest computing capabilities and physical understanding of breakage and transport to transform predictive capabilities for design, optimisation and on-line control with variable feed. The milling process is broken down into discrete sub-processes, each of which can be modelled as an object in the whole model and in the model code. These objects can be upgraded or exchanged without having to rewrite or restructure the remainder of the code. Sub-processes include: feed into mill; transport along mill; presentation to impacting events; range of impacting forces; probability of being impacted in different zones in the mill as a function of particle size and density; suspension in slurry; and discharge out of the mill. The unit and processes surrounding the mill (feed and recycle conveyors, slurry pump and pipe, cyclone and recycle crusher) have also been modelled, in order to incorporate the effect of recirculating load coming from a cyclone or a recycle pebble crusher, respectively for ball mills or SAG mills. Each unit is modelled dynamically and PID controllers have been added to control pumping flowrate from sump and water addition for cyclone feed dilution. The paper demonstrates the predictive capability of a dynamic, mechanistic model and is used to test the sensitivity to the sub-processes, comparing different formulations and highlighting the aspects that require further development. Validation on pilot tests and application to industrial data is presented. This approach is currently undergoing industrial trial on sites, for use in on-line model-informed process control. Considerable further development is required to incorporate the full mechanistic structure planned for this model."

"Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

"High deposition rate Wire and Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) can provide benefits to the aerospace industry, including a reduction in lead time, reduced material waste and, through higher solidification rates, refinement of the as-built microstructure relative to a cast material. However, candidate 2xxx series high strength alloys for this process normally require a solution treatment, which is problematic for large near-net-shape components, and age hardening to achieve maximum mechanical properties. With each layer being subject to multiple thermal cycles, exploiting the thermal conditions in the WAAM process to avoid post-build solution treatment is therefore of interest. A solutionisation model has been developed for the WAAM process, based on diffusion controlled dissolution using DICTRA, which was validated through thermal simulations combined with 2D and 3D image analysis. The model has subsequently been used to simulate the solutionisation behavior during a typical WAAM thermal cycle and to explore what could theoretically be achieved by, for example, refining the starting microstructure.INTRODUCTION There is currently great interest in exploiting additive manufacturing (AM) in the aerospace sector due to several benefits it can potentially provide; including reduced material waste, shorter product lead times and greater design freedom (Herzog, Seyda, Wycisk, & Emmelmann, 2016). However, with aluminium alloys the material properties obtained are generally inferior to those of conventional high-strength wrought products; therefore more research is required to explore the potential for exploiting the unique process conditions in AM to improve the as-deposited microstructure. A range of AM techniques are now available (Debroy et al., 2018), which differ in terms of the feedstock type and power source and it is necessary to match the appropriate technology to a particular application. This generally requires a compromise between the build rate and shape resolution. Wire and plasma-arc additive manufacturing involves using an electric arc to melt wire onto a substrate, and fabricates a part by building up overlapping layers of deposited weld beads (Addison et al., 2015; Williams et al., 2015). The benefits of this process over other AM methods are the much higher deposition rates (e.g. kg’s/hour) achievable and lower capital equipment costs relative to powder bed techniques, which makes it suitable for large scale applications. However, limitations include a lower part complexity, lower solidification rates and a greater need for post-process machining (Frazier, 2014)."
