Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. It was a pleasure listening to this paper. Gary Works' problems were a lot more extensive than the trunnion bearing problems encountered at the Weirton Steel Division. In our two-vessel shop bearing failures are critical in that with a bearing failure on an operating vessel and the second vessel under rebuild, we are down until the vessel rebuild is completed or the bearing is repaired. The first bearing problem at Weirton occurred after we had been operating three years. The failure occurred during the 8th heat following "bum-in" of the vessel. Immediate steps were taken to change the damaged float bearing without an extensive search for the reason the bearing failed. Once the campaign was run out the bearings were inspected and found to be damaged. Field checks revealed that the bearing pedestals were not properly located and as a result the freedom of the float bearing was restricted. The trunnion pin end to end dimension had decreased due to distortion and deflection in the trunnion ring. These dimensions were within tolerances. The damage to our bearing was similar to that in the exhibits from U.S. Steel-Gary Works. Steps taken to correct what was found in the field checks were as follows: 1. The pedestals were relocated to center the bearings. 2. 4" diameter pins were installed to locate the housing in the pedestals. 3. The bearing pedestals were opened up to allow the bearing housing to move slightly in the pedestal. 4. Lubrication fittings for greasing between the bearing housing and the pedestal were installed.

"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

At the 1971 Annual Meeting we presented a paper on the results s obtained by wet magnetic separation on very fine, slightly magnetic material . Considerable interest was shown in a corollary subject, namely; on the type of magnetic con¬struction of the Magnetic Engineering Associates (MEA) high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS). it is the purpose of this paper to describe the principles of this separator and to give answers to many of the questions directed at us both in session and privately since the March 1971 meeting of the AIME. It is well-known that passage of a direct electric current through a wire shaped in the form of a loop results in a magnetic field being created in the volume enclosed within the loop. The magnetic field is proportional to the amperes of electric current passing through the wire. If the wire is in the form of a solenoid consisting of 11 turns, the magnetic field is n times larger. Hence the expression ampere-turns commonly associated with magnetic separators. If a particle, free to rotate and of higher magnetic susceptibility than the medium, is placed in a magnetic field, it will orient itself within that field, and it will move within the field in such a way as to go into a more intense part of the field. The traction on the particle is proportional to its inherent magnetic property which depends on its magnetic susceptibility and its volume, to the mag¬nitude of the field at the spot where the particle is situated, and to the magnitude of the field gradient at that spot. Of the three factors that control traction on a particle in a magnetic field, the magnet designer can effectively control two, the magnetic field and the field gradient. In a wet magnetic separator such as the HIMS magnetic separator, there is another force exerting traction on the particle, and that is the force of the fluid (liquid) on the particle. It is, therefore, essential to examine the relationship of the fluid to the magnetic field. First, assume the water in which magnetic and non-magnetic particles are suspended to be stagnant. In the absence of magnetic field, the only forces acting on the particles are those due to gravitation on the particles and on the fluid displaced. This is the subject, so important in gravity concentration, discussed in elementary texts of mineral engineering'.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. The program was conceived with our consultants, NUS Corporation of Rockville, Maryland, and was begun in June, 1968. It was designed to accomplish several things: 1. "THE FIRST COMMENTATOR that I will call on is Mr. W. G. (Bill) Brissenden, Vice-President, Mines, Noranda Mines Ltd. Bill, would you care to comment.W. G. BRISSENDEN ...Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I spent some time reading the four papers that were presented here, yesterday evening, and decided that the four to six minutes that I had been allotted for this afternoon were going to be pretty tough to meet. It's a very big subject and I just hope that I will be able to stay within my time limit. As has been so aptly demonstrated by the members of our panel here this afternoon young men in growing numbers continue to be attracted to careers in the mineral industry, especially to careers in mining engineering. Now from 80 the point of view that the profession may have regained its status this is indeed welcome news. However, perhaps all of the members seem to have the suspicion that the number of mining engineers that the industry can absorb is a much lower figure than previously forecast. It is said that technical school graduates are now occupying some of the jobs once considered the private preserve of the mining engineer and also that mining engineering undergraduates are having trouble locating summer employment. If these interpretations of mine are correct then we are now confronted not only with our old dilemma - whither the mining engineer - but also with an urgent need to solve it. We cannot allow our profession to become once again an undesirable one in the eyes of our youth because if we permit such a thing to happen a second time the profession may never recover."

"The success or failure of coal mining operations in Western Canada may hinge on the ability to extract thick coal under a variety of geological and mining circumstances and conditions. The paper presents, in who-where, what- how pattern, the current status of undergrounud mining of thick coal seams based on a review of foreign technical literature. The underground production of coal from what are considered to be thick seams is over 300 million tons per year. Methods of mining have evolved, through years of trials and tribulations, capable of meeting the requirements of a modern mine: high bulk outputs from a limited number of mining faces by concentrating in the horizontal (mechanization) and in the vertical (increased working lift)."

Experimental work has been done to refine and to confirm an analytical procedure by which gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) spectra are interpreted from retention time data alone. The rationale of this spectra interpretation technique involves whether or not a given peak invariably represents the same component or component mixture; if not, what factors influence changes in peak identifications. To answer these questions, peak-identification procedures, based mainly on the use of subtractive columns, were developed and applied to interpret GLC spectra of several exhaust (and fuel) samples.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

This report gives the results of an experimental study of the progressive changes that occur in particle size and size distribution when a homogeneous and isotropic mineral is subjected to crushing by impact. The mineral used in the study was uniformly sized quartz, which was crushed in a simple drop¬-weight machine that applied impact energy up to about 100 kg-cm per g. Screen analyses of the crushed products were analyzed by the method of moments to determine the mean size, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. Analysis of the data from these experiments shows that the mean size of the crushed product is a function of the energy input and the initial size. The size distribution is functionally related to the degree of size reduction. As the mean particle size is decreased, at first there is a corresponding increase in the variance and decrease in the skewness, But, as size reduction is carried further, each tends eventually to approach a steady value, and the form of the size distribution becomes stable.

In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

With increased interest and urgency for coal mine safety and the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health 'and Safety Act, the Bureau's research effort in roof control has been greatly expanded. One new project, the subject of this paper, concerns improving conventional roof bolting and has been involved with the effects of different variables on the performance of roof bolt expansion anchors. These include types of expansion anchor, rock type at the anchorage horizon, borehole roughness, rate of torquing a roof bolt to set the anchor, installed tension, bolt length, and relative humidity fluctuations. For this work, two types of experiments were carried out. One was concerned with tension loss in bolt-anchor assemblies and simulated anchor performance in a static roof. The other dealt with anchor slippage as tension was increased and simulated anchor performance in an active roof. Trials were made in the laboratory under controlled conditions so that factors suspected of affecting expansion anchor performance could be selectively studied. Because of the natural variability in rock and the fact that most expansion anchor components are essentially rough castings or forgings, the experiments were designed to permit using analysis of variance techniques for analyzing data. Thus, in this paper, "significant" means statistically significant.

The Methane Control and the Respirable Dust Groups at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center (TCMRC) cooperated recently in obtaining production samples of approximately 1 ton each, from the loading conveyors of a ripper, a borer, and a loading machine in conventional development headings. These samples were sized, in four stages, from plus 4 in to minus 10 µm. The conventional product had the least fines of the three production methods. The borer product had more fines than did the ripper product, but it also had a greater amount of large pieces. All three products, as sampled, had essentially the same amount of minus 10-µm particles. Photomicrographs and surface?-area comparisons were made. Gas -adsorption, surface-area determinations on particles under 37 µm give essentially the same value. Surface-area calculations, assuming spherical particles and no porosity, give a smaller area to the conventional product.

"Hydraulic transport of solids has long been an important technique in mining and beneficiation. More recently, slurry pipelines have proved to be economic for longdistance overland transport of many commoditieis, including iron ore concentrates and coal. Now, the Marconaflo system brings the many advantages of hydraulic transport to bulk storage, loading, transportation and unloading of ships and other carrying equipment, thus providing important new means for delivering mineral commodities to market. In this paper, the authors describe the Marconaflo system and the potential economies which can be realized when applying it for loading, transporting, storing, reclaiming and blending a variety of mineral commodities, using several commercial installations as examples."

The importance of understanding the phenomena associated with rock fracture has long been fully appreciated in rock mechanics. This is clearly apparent from the special attention paid to rock fracture in the comprehensive papers published within the past four years.l-5 These papers present a picture of how the knowledge of brittle fracture of rock was gradually enriched and also show that what was often taken for granted three or four years ago is no longer considered as valid today. The Griffith hypothesis,6 thought in the past to predict the strength of rock, is now known to be applicable to fracture initiation only. The knowledge of a failure criterion for fracture initiation is not sufficient, however, as after fracture initiation the rock is still a useful material even possessing increasing load-bearing ability. The importance of the fracture propagation process, subsequent to fracture initiation, is thus obvious. Yet, relatively little attention has so far been paid to brittle fracture propagation in rock. As it is now realized that understanding of this process is a prerequisite for practical rock mechanics applications, studies of propagation of brittle fracture in rock constitute an important aspect of rock mechanics research. It has been pointed out 4 that it is essential that the failure mechanism is fully understood before a failure criterion is postulated. Many failure criteria have been propounded in the past on the basis of theoretical reasoning alone and could not be verified by experimental evidence. Recently, a hypothesis for the mechanism of brittle fracture of rock was propounded, 4 describing the events taking place in the rock from the initial application of gradually increased load to complete disintegration of the material.

This project was started 8 June 1971. As set forth in our Proposal of 28 April 1970, responding to the RFP of 30 March 1970, the plan was twofold: 1) choose fluids and develop techniques for measuring coat porosity, and 2) construct a porosimeter for making such measurements, By the time plans for the porosimeter had been drawn up, the picture had changed; and it was found more advisable to do further researches on porosity rather than build the equipment. This development arose from a meeting with Dr. Fred N. Kissell on 14, 15 October 1971, annotated in our letter of 19 October 1971, and was contracted for 6 December 1971. The technical effort of the project was completed 7 May 1972. From the beginning it was realized that the ratio of 'hole volume to the whole volume' might be too simplistic a definition for coat porosity and that its measurement might be confounded by complications which were not yet known, We were hopeful that an exploration of fluids and techniques would provide early feedback on both these points which could be used in subsequent developments. This turned out to be the case.

A great deal of effort is being expended by mineral processing engineers to acquire a basic knowledge of modelling and optimization techniques. Stimuli such as immediate process improvement, expanded process understanding, optimal flowsheet design and re-design, and the development of new and better control systems are goals which excite the imagination in terms of increased profits. To reach these goals, process models and efficient optimization strategies, regardless of their purpose, assume an important role. Consequently, few of us can argue that such efforts are of no value. The purpose of this paper is to review empirical modelling methods and optimization strategies which appear to be of value to mineral engineers.

Sand and gravel has been, and will continue to be, our principal construction material. Most of us are familiar with the patterns of past growth. Today we will examine the present status of this vital industry. We shall also attempt to look into the future to see where it is going and to evaluate the constraints that are being imposed. Natural aggregates are among the lowest in value of all bulk industrial minerals. From the processing point of view, sand and gravel production is relatively simple since the products are sized materials obtained from a deposit of satisfactory physical soundness. They can be used either loose or bound to provide bulk, strength, or protection. One of the main uses of coarse aggregate is in concrete as a filling material. As a general rule, the coarse aggregate constitutes about three-quarters of the volume of concrete. The other main use for aggregate is as a roadstone or roadbase to provide protective and stabilizing bulk beneath the road surface. Also it is used in a mixture with petroleum products as the wearing course on top. The sand and gravel industry is geographically widespread. In general, the output of operations is directly proportional to the amount of construction in any area. A wide variety of other aggregates compete with sand and gravel, including crushed stone, blast-furnace slag, clinker, and artificial and natural lightweight materials.

"THE TOPIC suggested for my contribution to this Symposium was ""Lead-Zinc Smelting - 40 Years of Pollution Control"". The history of the development of smelting industry at Trail and the control of sulphur dioxide could make quite an interesting historical study. However, in the field of environmental control, the public is not particularly interested in what you did yesterday, but rather what you are doing today and what you are planning to do tomorrow. I can't fault this approach, but because there are some subject lessons that history can demonstrate, I would like to tell enough of the story (under three headings) to bring a focus on matters of contemporary concern in regard to public relations and ecology. The three general headings suggested are: (1) time before the capture of by-product sulphur; (2) the capture of sulphur; and (3) the ecological and public relations conclusions from these."

"In the Introduction the author briefly discusses the company history as it relates to the development of its contracts with the Japanese steel mills. The main part of the text describes how Coleman Collieries Limited approached the problem of mining coal profitably in thick, steeply inclined seams. For many years a basic room-andpillar system was worked by conventional methods. Main roadways were driven on strike across the mineable area. These roadways acted as haulage routes for coal, materials and men. Rooms were developed to the rise of the main haulage route by pairs of men using air-operated hand picks. As these rooms advanced the miners would lay and extend a sheetiron chute down which mined coal would gravitate to a controlled loading point, where it was loaded into trains of mine cars. Connecting roadways or ""OFFS"" were driven at predetermined intervals between adjacent rooms, forming pil1ars or blocks. Extraction of the blocks followed on a line conducive to good strata control some distance behind the developing rooms. A need for higher productivity, expansion of the operations and a scarcity of qualified miners resulted in the company deciding to mechanize its underground mines. Joy 6 CM continuous miners and 10 SC shuttle cars were selected as being machines that could reasonably negotiate the problems associated with the pitching seam. The equipment, nonetheless, has definite limitations and Coleman therefore developed a modified version of the room-and-pi11ar system such that the miners and cars could work on cross pitch. In the area described, main roadways were driven to the rise on an average gradient of 12 degrees. Panels, which consisted of two parallel roads with interconnecting cross-cuts, were then developed on strike to a boundary point. Blocks formed in the development of the panels were subsequently extracted on retreat. Problems associated with each phase of the operation are thoroughly discussed, together with roadway support methods and equipment used for the conveyance of coal and materials."
