"The Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project is the capstone piece of New Orleans’ extensive hurricane risk-reduction system constructed following Hurricane Katrina. The project consists of three discrete pump stations and flood gates on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain which provide a storm surge barrier and pump rainwater from the City of New Orleans’ primary drainage canals. The depth of the pump station structures ranged between 39 and 45 feet below sea-level. USACE developed the PCCP project for design-build delivery; granting the project team latitude to develop innovative, cost effective solutions for the project. The use of OPEN CELLTM cofferdams to construct the pump station structures was one such innovation. OPEN CELL structures utilize the strength of the retained soil to anchor cellular sheet pile face arcs; allowing a free-field of construction within the cofferdam. This cofferdam design did not require ground improvement or dewatering around the perimeter of the cofferdam. The free-field cofferdams streamlined construction and large equipment installation within the structures with no encumbrance from internal bracing. Meticulous force-based design, soil-structure numerical modeling, and physical testing were all techniques used to present and gain USACE acceptance of the design on this vital element of the work.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project is the capstone piece of the City of New Orleans’ extensive hurricane risk-reductions system constructed following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The project encompasses three separate pump stations and floodgate structures located at the mouths of three outfall canals (17th Street, Orleans, and London) on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. These three canals, running from the south to north, act as the primary conduits for discharging water from the New Orleans area. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, these canals were operated with pump stations two to three miles upstream of the mouths at Lake Pontchartrain. This left long stretches of levee on each side of the canals exposed to storm surges entering from the lake. Three levee failures occurred along these canals during Katrina; two at London Canal and one at 17th Street Canal. The failures resulted in major flooding of the surrounding neighborhoods, significant damages, and loss of life.Following initial canal levee repairs after Hurricane Katrina, USACE, in partnership with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), took action to move the line of flood protection to the mouths of these three canals at the edge of the lake. By cutting off the storm surges from Lake Pontchartrain at the entrance to the canal, over ten miles of canal levee would no longer be exposed to storm surge water elevations, significantly decreasing the risk of failure."

"Three mol% Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) was prepared by a sol-gel synthesis technique using zirconium tetrachloride and hydrated yttrium chloride precursors. After drying and annealing at 823K, the particle size was in the range 10 to 20 nm. The zirconia powder was sintered using a uniaxial hot press at an applied stress of 20 to 40 MPa. One hour, isothermal sintering was performed in air after initial heating at 50K/min. Theoretical density was obtained at densification temperatures above 1498K. After sintering, grain coarsening characteristics were studied using constant heating rate anneals followed by quenching, based on a model for grain coarsening in a linear heating rate cycle. The microstructural change was studied using SEM and TEM and the phases were determined using x-ray diffraction.IntroductionThe ability to sinter nanocrystalline materials to full density several hundred degrees below the normal sintering temperatures is one reason for their current interest. [1-5] Yttria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) of grain size of about 300 nm has exhibited superplasticity, with elongations as large as 800%.[6-7] Fine grain size is critical for superplasticity. Retention of the fine grain size during sintering of nanocrystalline powder is important if a material is to exhibit superplasticity or to exhibit physical or mechanical properties associated with the ultra fine structure. This paper investigates the sintering behavior and the grain coarsening characteristics ofnanocrystalline YSTZ.Techniques for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials have been studied in great detail earlier. [8-12] The techniques used to synthesize nanocrystalline zirconia include alkoxide synthesis [9], the chloride method [11], the peroxide method [13] and the acetone-toluene method. [13] In this paper the method used in the synthesis of zirconia is the chloride technique. With this precipitation technique, either zirconium chloride or oxychloride and a corresponding yttrium salt or even pure yttria are used."

La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

Asimismo se realiza una comparación entre la perforación vertical y horizontal del uso de taladros en rebajes de corte y relleno. Finalmente, se refiere la importancia de la existencia de jumbos de alta capacidad en la influencia de métodos de cámaras y pilares.

Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 30 m/min (100 fpm). This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities — 152, 213 and 274 m/min (500, 700 and 900 fpm)— and at water pressures of 689, 1,034 and 1,379 kPa (100, 150 and 200 psi). Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Average reduction efficiencies of at least 90 percent were seen at the three sampling locations closest to the shearer for all three manifold systems at nozzle spray pressures greater than 689 kPa (100 psi). Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer, a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation.

A technique that enables excellent color photograph production from black and white negatives of electron microprobe x-ray images is described in this paper. The photographs are made by superimposing one, two or three negatives of black and white x-ray images individually through assigned primary color filters directly onto color print paper. When used to examine metallurgical or geological microstructures, the resulting color photograph provides detailed, qualitative information about spatial arrangements, elemental associations and relative concentrations of at least three elements. The technique is simple and straightforward, requiring only standard darkroom equipment. The use of color to display or present complicated microprobe data also allows a non-technical reader or audience to better understand the data.

Water is a critical commodity of our generation and a key compound for the chemical and mining industries. Sustainable industrial development is directly associated with the ability to recover clean water from contaminated sources. Forward Osmosis (FO) is a low-energy footprint membrane process allowing the recovery of clean water from high salinity effluent streams. In FO, water is recovered spontaneously into a concentrated draw solution (CDS). Energy is required to separate the recovered water from the resulting dilute draw solution (DDS). In the current work, the fundamentals of the FO process and the most important aspects affecting its performance are discussed. An energy comparison of FO and conventional water recovery technologies is presented. Finally, the opportunities FO presents in the field of hydrometallurgy are analyzed.

In single-stage autogenous grinding, the buildup of a critical size fraction in the media can be corrected by removing this material through pebble ports, crushing it below the critical size range, and recycling the crusher product back to the mill. The rate at which the critical sire fraction is crushed affects the size distribution of the grinding media and this in turn affects the sire distribution of the grate discharge. This provides a means for controlling the grind produced by a single-stage autogenous grinding unit. The pilot-plant investigations on a very hard copper ore were carried out at the facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University. In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately 9 in. top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build-up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge."' The buildup of a critical size fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large-diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as 1) an increase in mill liner wear, 2) wear on the steel balls, and 3) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit opera-tions resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out. A number of investigators' have suggested the use of a small crusher as an alternative to the use of large steel balls for control of a critical size fraction. With this technique the critical size fraction is removed from the mill continuously through suitable-sized pebble ports, crushed below the critical size range, and returned to the mill. An external crusher would cause no increase in mill liner wear, the wear on the crusher would be less expensive than the wear on the steel balls, and the flexibility of the grinding circuit operations would be enhanced since the crusher can be cut into and out of the circuit at will. This paper describes an autogenous grinding pilot plant investigation on a very hard copper ore, which led to the selection of an autogenous grinding flowsheet incorporating a crusher in the circuit as the preferred method for grinding this ore. Further development of the technique demonstrated that the crusher could be employed to control the product produced by an autogenous grinding unit. Description of Pilot Plant These investigations were carried out at the pilot-plant facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The autogenous grinding unit was a 6-ft-diam by 2-ft-long Hardinge Cascade mill with %-in. slotted steel grates. Pebble ports cut into the grates allowed passage of pebbles having a top size of approximately 21/2 in. The grate and pebble-port discharge material passed over a 3/16-in, trommel screen with the trommel under -size being pumped to the classification device. DSM screens were employed for classification in the early investigations, but were replaced later by a small Dorr rake classifier. The trommel oversize material returned to the mill via scissor conveyors. When the crusher was incorporated into the circuit, the trommel oversize material passed to a double-deck vibrating screen fitted with 2-in. and 3/4-in. square mesh screen cloths. The $ 2-in. and the —2 +3/4-in. size fractions were combined and crushed to a nominal 1 in. in a 4 x 6-in. jaw crusher. The crusher discharge and the —3/4-in. screen undersize returned to the mill. In the final investigation, a flap gate fitted to the top deck of the screen directed the — 21/2 +2-in. size fraction to the crusher or back to the grinding mill. The flap gate operated manually on a 15-min cycle, with this material being crushed for so many minutes out of each cycle. This was found to be a more reliable method of controlling the amount of — 21/2 +2-in. material crushed than attempting to make a split of a small weight of material on a continuous basis. Operational Techniques: Each sample was sized into three fractions and the Cascade mill feed was reconstituted from these size fractions in the proportions existing in the original sample. Sufficient feed for 15 min operation was weighed out and fed by hand over a 15-min period. The gross mill power draft was recorded every 15 min, corrected for tare power and drive efficiency, and reported as net kilowatt-hours per ton. A recording kilo-watt-hour meter provided a continuous visual record of the power drawn by the mill. Pulp densities of the trommel undersize and the classifier overflow (or DSM undersize) were taken every 15 min. The classifier overflow was sampled automatically. Timed samples of the classifier sands were taken every 15 or 30 min, weighed, and returned to the circuit. After correcting for moisture content, the weights were converted into percent circulating load. "Scandium oxide can be recovered as a by-product from process streams in a number of chemical and metallurgical plants including TiO2 sulphate pigment, Ni/Co laterite, zirconium oxychloride and uranium operations. The feed materials available for processing can be either mid or end of process streams containing many species in solution. This paper describes the strategies available to limit coextraction of elements into scandium containing streams from TiO2 pigment production and the removal of these elements to deliver high purity scandium oxide.A critical part of process development is to work within the constraints of the main process in terms of introducing new unit processes and producing minimal additional process intermediates and residues. This requires flexibility in designing flowsheets and plants to find novel process routes that avoid production of intermediates and/or the introduction of reagents that can compromise the main process operations.Bloom Energy has developed novel solvent extraction processes for the extraction and refining of scandium oxide that minimise impacts on core process streams within TiO2 pigment plants. The additional unit processes are designed to have minimal contact with pigment plant process streams to produce a concentrate that is refined to nominal 3N purity scandium oxide in a simple, small scale commercial plant."

Numerical analysis is carried out to examine the effects of thermosolutal convection on the formation of complex patterns in directionally solidified binary alloys. A finite-difference analysis is used for dynamic modeling of a two-dimensional prototype of Vertical Bridgman system that takes into account heat transfer in the melt, crystal, and the ampoule; melt flow and solute transport. Actual temperature data from experimental measurements are used for accurately describing the thermal boundary conditions. A range of complex dynamical behavior is predicted in the melt flow due to flow transitions and this is found to be directly related to the spatial patterns observed experimentally in the solidified alloys. The model is applied to single phase solidification in the Al-Cu and Pb-Sn systems to characterize the effect of convection on the macroscopic shape of the interface. The application of the model to hyper-peritectic alloys in the Sn-Cd system shows that the presence of oscillating flow can give rise to a novel convection induced microstructure in which a tree-like primary phase in the center of the sample is embedded in the surrounding peritectic matrix.

Heat content measurements were conducted for GaPo.996 and InPo.986 over the temperature range from 298° to 1,100° K, and for In2S2.897 over the range from 298° to 1,200° K. Both the actual experimental data and values adjusted to conform with the stoichiometric compositions (GaP, InP, and In2S3) were reported. Entropy increments above 298.15° K were calculated for the stoichiometric compounds, and heat content and heat capacity equations were derived.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. Pastilhas de Urânio (UO2) são empregadas como combustível nos reatores de potência, onde as condições operacionais introduzem elevados gradientes térmicos nas pastilhas. Potências elevadas propiciam a fusão da parte central das pastilhas. O inchamento das pastilhas UO2, decorrente dos produtos de fissão, causa trincamento do material e o estudo do seu comportamento é importante. Esse trabalho avaliou a aplicação de método ultrassônico na obtenção de constantes elásticas. Em função das dificuldades no manuseio do material nuclear, optou-se por um estudo comparativo em pastilhas de alumina (Al2O3). Foram fabricados e usados dois conjuntos de 10 pastilhas de Al2O3 com densidades de 92% e 96%. Foi utilizada técnica ultrassônica por transmissão obtendo medidas do tempo de percurso de ondas ultrassônicas, longitudinais e transversais, usadas para a determinação das constates elásticas do material. Equações relacionando densidade do material e velocidade da onda ultrassônica ao módulo de elasticidade, módulo de cisalhamento e coeficiente de Poisson, permitiram obter essas constantes elásticas, que apresentaram excelente concordância com a literatura disponível para o Al2O3.

An in situ leaching geochemical simulator consisting of flow, mass transport, and graphics support programs has been developed. Two dimensional flow in heterogeneous porous media is modeled using a semi-analytic boundary integral technique. This method involves mapping streamlines to straight line segments in the complex potential plane. Leachant concentration and mineral values are modeled in this plane using the (one dimensional) potential coordinates. A fully implicit finite difference scheme is used to solve the resulting coupled system of four concentration equations. Graphical representations of streamline patterns, concentration histories, profiles and recovery curves are generated. An application of the model to uranium leaching in a heterogeneous aquifer and ore zone setting is presented.

Most of the papers designated as being within the topic of underground storage at this Symposium are concerned with aspects of radioactive waste isolation. Although this is, unquestionably, an important international application of underground storage, and one involving a considerable number of research investigations, the subject of underground storage is indeed much broader. Several major international conferences have been devoted exclusively to it. Applications include storage, under a range of temperatures and pressures, of oil and liquefied petroleum products, compressed air, heat, foodstuffs of various kinds, hazardous and 'nuisance' industrial by-products, and a variety of special applications, both civilian and military - some in use, others proposed. Storage may be in caverns excavated specifically for the purpose, exhausted mines may be adapted for storage or, in some cases, the material to be stored may be injected under pressure into the pore spaces of porous-permeable formations at depth. A variety of rock types and geological environments are used, e.g. excavations in salted or domal salt, where long-term creep closure of the openings is a concern; massive granite, where fluid loss through fissures may be important. Cavities may have spans of several tens of meters, and there is interest in achieving still larger excavations. As would be expected, this breadth of underground storage applications introduces a similarly broad range of questions in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The report will review these questions and recent developments in rock mechanics research, computational procedures, and design applications - and will also discuss the opportunities for a still greater range of applications of underground storage to current industrial and social problems.
