The performance of the nation's first geologic repository for Commercial High Level Waste will be evaluated in a variety of ways which will involve the use of the state-of-the-art thermomechanical computer codes. Elastic properties of the host rock and the materials surrounding the repository are required for this numerical modeling effort to assess both near- and far-field effects. Only limited laboratory testing is possible, however, making it extremely beneficial to expand the data base by calculating dynamic elastic properties from available geophysical well logs. Elastic theory dictates that for an isotropic solid there are only two independent variables in addition to mass density, namely the compressional velocity, the shear velocity, and Poisson's Ratio. Compressional velocity and density are readily measured by geophysical well logs or in the lab; the crux of the solution requires measuring or determining either the shear velocity or Poisson's Ratio. Examination of acoustic propagated shear waves measured during confined compression testing demonstrates that Poisson's Ratio is a fundamental lithology-dependent parameter. Once a rock mass is appropriately classified, application of the laboratory derived dynamic Poisson's Ratio will yield a continuous and reasonable in situ modulus from acoustic and density logs. For preliminary characterization and assessment of the mechanical properties of rocks within the subsurface, and for studies of rock quality, this method is sufficiently accurate. The general availability of acoustic and density logs from wells logged for other purposes has made the application of this method desirable.

Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content «2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution'aliquots and recovered to within 100 ± 2·5 per cent. For duplicate determinations under normal worKing conditions, standard deviation was 1·32 p.p.m.Excellent agreement was found between atomic absorption gold values and accurate fire assay values.INTRODUCTIONAtomic absorption spectroscopy has been shown to offer a rapid and accurate method for the determination of trace amounts of a number of metal ions. One of Society’s major concerns with hydrometallurgical processing is the large amount of water that is quintessential to its nature. This is especially troubling in arid areas, where the population struggles to procure potable water for their daily needs. For that reason, it has become our responsibility to conceive, design and implement processing schemes that not only use as little water as possible, but recycle streams within the plant itself and minimize waste that exits its perimeter. With this in mind, the conference will center on the importance of selecting the appropriate chemical systems and integrating material balances to avoid reagent overkill and to detect impurity accumulation. The three “R’s” (reuse, recycle and recovery) of aqueous solutions within the processes are emphasized. Examples of processes for the recovery of lead, copper, precious and PG metals from minerals and waste materials will be presented.

Since the introduction of column flotation almost forty years ago the column technology has grown into several non-mineral applications such as among others the effluent treatment, soils recovery and de-inking of recycled paper. Recent studies have demonstrated that particular characteristics of the dispersion (bubble size, gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) are needed for a given flotation column duty. In this work, two kind of spargers were tested (i.e., internal and external) using a 4 inch column lab in a two phase system. Results show that the external sparger provides a dispersion with characteristics that include those produced by the two internal spargers.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 20pp., 31 refs. Estimates of coal tonnage on UK open cast mining sites often vary from the recoverable tonnage. This is because the estimates depend on the geological variability of the coal measures. Geological parameters, such as thickness, quality and disturbance of the seam, have a direct control upon this variance. Risk analysis techniques have been applied using commercially available software to combine each parameter's variability into a cumulative variance, resulting in a tonnage distribution. Sensitivity modelling has also been used to identify the geological parameters which have the largest influence on the variance of the simulated tonnage distribution. An understanding of the relationship between the tonnage and geological variability has helped to focus exploration more efficiently. A cost to risk relationship can now be monitored, helping management to avoid negative consequences on site

Composite ores are more often used for production of iron in connection with reserve depletion of traditional ore crude in the regions with developed metallurgy. In particular, the majority of perspective ferrum-ore deposits of the Urals are presented by titanferous magnetite ores which contain a significant amount of titanium and vanadium alongside with ferrum. Thus, the deposits of titanferous magnetites of the Southern Urals on the average contain about 20 % of Fe, 8,7 % TiO2 and 0,24 % V2O5. Due to a high content of titanium oxides it is impossible or it is inexpedient to process such ores in blast furnaces. During work just on titanferous magnetite ore refractory titanium-containing slags are formed in a blast furnace, and in case of its dilution by ores of different types the titanium due to the small content in slag is thrown out. It is often impossible to separate such ores into ferriferous and titanferous concentrates because ferrum and titanium are present in the same minerals. This work attempts to selectively reduce ferrum in solid oxide and to separate metallic iron from titanferousslag with fast fusion. Solid-phase reduction of ferrum has been carried out with carbon at temperature of 1000? 1300°?. In products of solid-phase reduction the extremely disperse mix of metal iron and only partially reduced titanium oxides have been achieved. It is impossible to separate such a mix mechanically. However, the fast fusion of the mix allowed separating it into cast iron and slag with the high content of titanium. Thus the cast iron contained less than 0,1 % of titanium, and the slag did not contain practically any ferrum.

Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on methods for the rapid identification and sorting of mixed scrap metals and alloys so that domestic scrap resources can be fully utilized. One method, spark testing, is the examination of the pattern of sparks that results when a metal or alloy is ground on an abrasive wheel. This technique requires experienced sorters. Bureau researchers have shown that spectrophotometric methods can be used in lieu of the highly skilled sorter. The spectra of a mild steel, an HSLA steel, several stainless steels, and four nickel-base alloys have been measured. Differences in the spectra that are sufficient for identification are apparent.

Scaling of rockpasses was problematic at Tau Lekoa Mine prior to production commencing in 1991. High horizontal stress levels relative to the host rock mass strength have been instrumental in causing the observed scaling. Scaling has been more pronounced in the deeper rockpasses and these are monitored regularly. Rehabilitation of one of the reef passes and one of the waste passes was required in the period 1999 to 2001. This paper describes the extent of the problems experienced to date as well as the rehabilitation completed.

"In a preliminary report made a year ago it was shown that certain minerals when subjected to heating with water under high pressure and temperature were shattered upon the sudden release of that pressure. The main feature in which the results of this method differ from those of conventional grinding is in the differential effect obtained. The more metallic minerals, and hence the valuable minerals, are shattered more readily than are the gangue minerals. In other words, explosive shattering is unique among possible methods for comminuting an ore in that it wastes the least energy on the useless part of the ore. Explosive shattering, therefore, offers possibilities as a means for reducing grinding costs, arid it is this potential advantage of the process that makes it worthy of further experimental study. The first part of this paper is devoted to a study of the mechanism of the process; the, second part reports results obtained in toots on a selected list of ores to exhibit some of the advantages of explosive shattering."

Not so many years ago the interest of the average mining engineer in money matters-aside from his pay check or his consulting fees-was confined to the per-ton cost of mining and beneficiating ore and to the amount of capital that would be required to erect the plant necessary to carry out such operations on a prescribed scale. The so-called "business men" assumed that questions of marketing the products, of profits, and of dividends were in their exclusive sphere-matters too intricate or, perhaps, too practical for the mere engineer! In the case of a new enterprise, the promoter shouldered the entire responsibility for raising the necessary funds, and incidentally he got the lion's share of profits. In fact, he frequently profited handsomely even though the mine earned little or nothing. Occasionally the engineer turned promoter or entrepreneur--conspicuous examples are Herbert Hoover, D. C. Jackling, William Braden and F. W. Bradley- but by and large he remained in a sphere of his own. To what extent this condition of affairs has changed is difficult to say. Methane drainage and ventilation methods of methane hazard mitigation are used in the coal mines of Kompania Weglowa S.A. Over 22% of methane released during mining activities is captured by methane drainage systems and transported to the surface. In this article we present development plans for utilization of methane captured and transported to the surface by methane drainage systems. The results of research on the possibility of economic utilization of methane concentrated in ventilation air that leaves the mine through fan diffusers are also described.

Abandoned coal mines cause subsidence and structural damages. Shallow abandoned mines induce the most severe and harmful damages. In addition, they produce time-dependent subsidence which is difficult to predict. Backfilling of underground cavities with waste materials have been used to prevent the time-dependent subsidence or to mitigate its effect. However, this procedure is expensive. A new drill and blast technique has recently been proposed to prevent surface damage from time¬dependent subsidence over abandoned mines. It utilizes the principle that blasting in the caved rock and roof in the vicinity of a cavity will dilate the ground and create a self-supporting effect owing to increase in the volume. Physical modeling has demonstrated that artificial dilation of caved rock using the drill & blast technique creates positive effects due to the following sequence of events: the dilated rock creates a supporting effect for the suspended rock strata and reduces its span which decelerates 3.4 times the process of caving. The roof span is reduced by the next caved layer, which causes the hole boundaries to incline to each other. This effect converts the process of caving from a developing mode to a reduction mode. Finally, the sinkhole zone assumes a triangular shape with a negative angle of draw 64-700 in contrast to a rectangular shape of the chimney zone for natural caving. Vertical dimension of the triangular zone is 3.87 times of the room height. Final surface subsidence decreases at least 2.09 times; displacement 1.31 times, slope 2 27 times; curvature 3.42 times, horizontal strain 1 21 times in comparison to natural caving of the ground over an abandoned mine.

"During 2016, foundation piling works were completed to allow for the construction of a production and storage/handling terminal in Rotterdam. It is there that steel foundations will be produced for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry. Several Dutch contracting companies were involved in constructing: foundations for an assembly hall, a barge quay and a deep-sea quay wall. For the hall foundations, cast in situ concrete vibro piles were created. Open ended steel casing piles were also installed due to very high cone resistances which made it impossible to perform cast in situ piles in certain areas. The quay wall was constructed with open ended steel casing piles in combination with sheet piles. A deep-sea quay wall was also constructed to provide enough storage area for the offshore mono piles. This project was unique and challenging due to the use of different foundation technologies in challenging circumstances and soil conditions. This paper will give an insight into the Dutch use of varying foundation piling techniques for deep-sea quay wall constructions. It can be concluded that even experienced local contractors can be surprised by variations in soil conditions. It will also show how the contractors adapted to the difficult circumstances.PROJECT OUTLINEThe project consisted of a barge quay near the assembly hall with a length of 500 metres, width of 42 metres and a height of 35 metres, and a deep-sea quay wall 480 metres in length. This paper concentrates on the foundation works for the construction of the deep-sea quay wall. The construction of the deep-sea quay wall consisted of a combination of open ended steel casing piles with a diameter of Ø 1420 mm and a wall thickness varying between 21 and 23 mm. The lengths of the steel casing piles varied between 32 and 37 metres. Between the steel casing piles triple PU 28 sheet piles were installed with lengths varying between 26 and 29 metres. In the Netherlands, a combination of open ended steel piles and sheet piles is known as a “combi wall”. For the deep-sea quay wall a steel combi wall was shored with steel H- section profiles that were driven in a raked position whilst being injected with grout, so called MV-piles. The MV piles for this project consisted of steel HEB 600 sections with lengths from 52 up to 59 metres and were installed with angles varying between 42.5 and 47.5 degrees. The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of 16 California crude oils. Analyses of other oil from California have been published in Reports of Investigations 25954/, 26085/, 28466/, and 30747/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of the samples vas facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

Between the executive session at 5:15 p. m. and the general session at 8:30 p. m., 28 Section and Division delegates were wests of the Directors at dinner. Committee chair- " men and past officers brought the attendance to 75. Messrs. McAuliffe, Merica, Mudd and Tally had expressed their intention to be at the Directors' meeting, but each was prevented unavoidably at the last minute. At the executive session of the Board, J. V. W. Reynders was unanimously chosen to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Becket as Director: and Eugene McAuliffe in like " manner was selected to become Vice-president to fill the vacancy created hy Dr. Becket's assumption of the Presidency. Upon nomination of President Becket the following Executive Committee was appointed: Frederick M. Becket, chairman; Howard N. Eavenson, H. A. Guess, J. V. W. Reynders and William Wraith; and the Finance Committee was appointed as follows: Henry Krumb, chairman; Paul D. Merica and H. G. Moulton. Karl Eilers was reelected Treasurer and A. B. Parsons was re- elected Secretary to serve for the ensuing year, whereupon the executive session was adjourned.
