During the phosphating of car bodies containing aluminium, the employed phosphating chemicals zinc, manganese and nickel are, for thermodynamic reasons, only used to a limited extent for the desired surface coating. The major proportion of these metals is discharged together with the incidental cryolite-containing phosphating sludges and the rinse water. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute of Mineral and Waste Processing, Waste Disposal and Geomechanics at the Clausthal University of Technology has developed a two-stage process for the production-integrated recovery of the dragged out chemicals and for closing the rinse water cycle for Audi AG. During the first stage, the phosphating chemicals are recovered by means of leaching. In the second stage, the rinse water is treated by means of electroflotation followed by an ion exchanger.

"The as-cast microstructure of two commercial-size ingots of aluminum alloy 3004 produced by the electromagnetic casting process was quantitatively characterized. This involved the quantitative determination of through-thickness and across-width variations in dendrite cell size, grain size, macrosegregation of alloying elements, interparticle spacing, and the types, volume fractions, and sizes of the constituent or second phase particles. More than ninety-five percent of the constituent phases in the ingots consisted of the A16(Mn,Fe) phase; the desirable a-Al 12(Fe,Mn)3Si phase was not detected in any of the ingots by Guinier X-ray diffraction analyses or electron probe X-ray microanalyses. A significant microstructural heterogeneity through the thickness and across the width of both ingots was observed. For example, macrosegregation, and the sizes of the constituent phase particles, dendrite cells, and grains increased concomitantly from edge to mid-width and from surface to center of the ingots. There was a -20% depletion (negative macrosegregation) of Mg and a +54-87% enrichment (positive macrosegregation) of Ti in the center of the ingots. With the exception of grain size, there was no significant microstructural difference between the two ingots examined. The causes and practical implications of the observed microstructural heterogeneity in the ingots are discussed.IntroductionThe first step in the fabrication of majority of wrought products of aluminum and its alloys is the casting of large ingots or billets of simple shapes (round or rectangular). The sizes of the ingots vary from 10 mm to 450 mm diameter or 25 mm to 780 mm thick. The quality of the finished products is established at the ingot casting stage. This is because the microstructural characteristics, such as secondary dendrite cell size or arm spacing, amount of alloying elements retained in solid solution, macrosegregation, and the characteristics of second phases, produced during casting cannot be reversed by subsequent processing. Up until twenty-five years ago, the effect of as-cast microstructure of large ingots on the structure and behavior of thin sheets (0.34 mm thick) during drawing and ironing processes was incorrectly assumed to be minimal or nonexistent. This was based on the erroneous notion that the thermal treatments and large reduction (>99.94%) and strain that the ingot undergoes during production of the sheets completely destroys the original ingot structure and its inherent heterogeneity. However, the effects of ingot structure can, a priori, be deduced from the observed effects of constituent phase particle size, type and volume fraction on recrystallization, development of texture during annealing and deformation, and earing. In fact, careful examination of the behavior of products produced from different size ingots or castings have shown that the original microstructure of the ingot has a direct impact on the properties and performance of the end products."

As cities and towns continue to grow, the need to install sewer, water, gas and other utilities becomes a necessity and the blasting of trenches for these service lines probably constitutes one of the most important forms of blasting in built-up areas. There f o re, understanding how explosives can be safely used in the most efficient manner is of prime importance. The need for protection against flyrock must be emphasized. The first consideration is that all explosive c h a rges should be located well down in the blastholes. The golden rule is to ensure that the depth of top stemming is never less than the burden on the hole. In the case of shallow holes, the minimum depth of stemming should not be less than 18 times the charge diameter, if airblast and flyrock are to be controlled. If there is a doubt, then additional cover and/or blasting mats should be used. Putting too much burden on blastholes is another possible cause of flyrock and raising ground vibration levels. Overburdening of explosive charges will also result in the blastholes not breaking to grade. This in t u rn re q u i res additional drilling of shallow holes down in the trench to achieve grade, thus further increasing the h a z a rd of flyrock .

Predicting the geomechanical response of the shale gas material during hydraulic fracturing operation in the field needs better understanding of their geomechanical behaviour under laboratory testing. Anisotropy is considered as a critical factor during investigation and analysis of deviated boreholes, borehole stability, stress-strain and strength behaviour, generation and propagation of fracture and fluid flow. In this study, compressive elastic modulus (Ec) of the Montney shale has been investigated in two perpendicular directions: unconfined compressive strengths test was conducted on the Montney sample to measure its Ec in the vertical direction. This value then was compared to the Ec value in the horizontal plane (i.e. foliation plane) which was previously measured throughout a Brazilian test by Keneti and Wong (2011). From the results, the representative values of Ec in the vertical and in the horizontal directions were found as 25 GPa and 40 GPa, respectively. Computer tomography technique was also employed for the experimental data interpretation.

The theory of ore flotation has developed at a rather fast rate and the application of theory to practice has been successfully investigated. Significant technological advances have been made in such areas as control of the ore grade, automation in metallurgical control through conductivity measurements, and the development of faster and continuous analytical techniques for ore pulp analysis. Further significant improvements in mill control are being_ investigated through the application of a computer control to the process. This represents the more advanced trend in process control. At the heart of a control system installation, the digital computer will communicate directly with process instrumentation, perform' complex calcu¬lations to determine on a timely basis the control settings for attaining optimum results and automatically furnish signals to effect control actions. The process is considered as an integrated unit and economic criteria are used to measure its performance. The approaches to a mathematical model development to describe the process, optimization and control schemes as applied to an ore beneficiation process will be discussed.

A new process has been developed to treat fly ash generated from municipal incinerators, which contains not only toxic metals such as lead and cadmium, but also dioxins. The process includes the following steps; fly ash is formed into green pellets with some additives and the pellets are then roasted to eliminate or stabilize the toxic metals and to decompose dioxins. A pilot plant with a capacity of approximately 100 kg/hr was used to test the process, The tests verified that heavy metals were either volatilized or stabilized and dioxins were decomposed by high-temperature roasting. The pelletized ash was found to be non-toxic, so that it can be recycled as artificial lightweight aggregate. It was also found that volatilized metals collected as secondary ash can be recycled as smelting resources.

Sixty percent of the mines responding to the sixth annual Mining Cost Service labor survey reported increases in wages averaging 3.4% over the preceding 12 months. Only one mine reported a decrease in wages and this was accompanied by initiation of a substantial profit-sharing plan. Thirty-nine percent reported no change in wages. Thirty-seven percent reported using some form of incentive bonus plan. Mining Cost Service annually surveys coal, metal, and industrial mineral mines throughout the United States. Information about wages, benefits, and incentive bonus plans is part of an extensive data collection program to monitor cost areas of significance to the mining industry. This year, 131 mines responded to the survey. The data is collected by sending questionnaires to personnel managers at active mining operations. The information included in this article was taken from the returned forms, from labor contracts provided by some of the mines, and from followup telephone calls. This year's data was collected between November 1988 and February 1989.

Quantitative determination of gold at sub-ppm concentrations in sulphide minerals is an important component of deportment studies for sulphide-gold deposits. Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis is preferred for this application because it rapidly and cost-effectively provides spatially resolved (<20 pm), low ppb concentration data for gold and other elements in mineral grains. Recent advances in LA-ICP-MS analysis include the development and application of elemental mapping. Raw signals from multiple line scans or lines-of-spots are deconvoluted and calibrated to generate elemental maps which provide detailed information on spatial variations of gold and other elements within and between grains.

Ilmenite from the Everett deposit in Quebec was characterized both chemically and mineralogically. The sample investigated contained the following main components: 40% Fe2O3, 21% TiO2 and 21% SiO2. The ilmenite grains contained about 20 to 25% hematite intergrown blades, with widths ranging from 2 to 30 \u03bcm. Crushing the sample to less than 0.85 mm led to significant liberation of the ilmenite from the gangue minerals. Gravity separation followed by magnetic separation of this size fraction led to a TiO2 concentrate grading of about 30% TiO2, with a recovery of 94%.

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. Industrial minerals have always enjoyed an important share in the technological growth of any country in the world. Today, extraction and trading of industrial minerals has expanded, but is also subject to stricter environmental guidelines. This paper presents the current status as well as the growth potential in the exploitation of industrial minerals in the countries of the south eastern European region, i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M., Greece, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey. More specifically, annual production figures per country are presented for1992-1998. These figures are compared to each other and, where applicable, to world production figures. Trading of industrial minerals from these countries to Europe and the world and its effect to the local economies is also evaluated were such data is available.

Coal is the most abundant and most economical source of energy in the United States, however, combustion of coal results in release of pollutants to the environment. The release of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen during combustion of coal contributes to the deterioration of the environment. Energy independence in the United States must include the increased use of coal reserves. Increased reliance on coal for energy will dictate the necessity for making coal a cleaner fuel. New technologies employing a variety of techniques from harsh chemical treatment to mild physical separations to clean coal are rapidly becoming available. Success for any coal cleaning process is in economics which translate into efficient removal of sulfur with high recovery of combustibles as well as low capital and operating costs for the process. Conventional coal cleaning processes remove water soluble sulfates and a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash from coals. Removal of additional sulfur from coals requires more advanced coal cleaning techniques. Coal contains many organic sulfur forms which are the most difficult of the sulfur types to remove from coal. The heteroaromatic sulfur species, such as the comlex thiophenes, are the most commonly found organic sulfur forms. These sulfur forms are resistant to chemical attack and are considered to be refractory compounds. Atlantic Research Corporation has developed an "unique" microorganism, CB1 (Coal Bug 1), capable of oxidizing thiophenic sulfur in coal to form water soluble sulfates.

"The National Safety Competition of 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the Bureau of Mines in which bronze trophies known as Sentinels of Safety are awarded to winning companies, has just been completed and the results are presented here.With 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost-time accidents occurred during the contest year.The Sentinels of Safety trophies, provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine, were awarded to four underground mines, one open-pit mine, and one quarry. Each employee of the winning plant was awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Bureau of Mines in recognition of the employee's part in helping his company to win the trophy. In addition to the award of trophies, a Certificate of Honorable Mention was awarded to each of the mines and quarries in second, third, fourth, and fifth places in their respective contest groups and also to each mine and quarry that worked 30,000 or more man-hours without a lost-time accident. Ninety-two such certificates were awarded for 1938. Twenty-three other mines and quarries also operated without an accident but worked less than 30,000 man-hours, the minimum required by the contest rules for award of Certificates of Honorable Mention.Previous to 1938, five trophies were awarded annually in the National Safety Competition. For the 1938 contest a sixth trophy was provided by The Explosives Engineer so that open-pit mines and quarries, two classes of operations that previously had been included in one group in the competition, might have separate awards."

Pipe umbrella systems have effectively been used as an additional support system in the working area in weak ground conditions during the last decades. Thus, a considerable number of applications accounts in urban tunnelling with shallow overburden. However, this support system is also successfully used when a tunnel alignment crosses fault zones, sediments, moraines or talus with overburdens from shallow to deep. The pipe umbrella support system itself is termed differently worldwide – synonyms are canopy tube umbrella method, umbrella arch method, or long fore-poling method.One main reason for the increase in application is that this support system closes cost-effectively the gap between reasonable, normal supported tunnels and tunnels supported with more expensive special techniques like horizontal jet-grouting or ground freezing. By using this system, many projects can be built more cost effective without decreasing the common level of safety.The pipe umbrella construction method is pretty young, so the knowledge about this system has been intensely researched in the last decade. This led to an enormous increase in understanding the interaction between support system and surrounding ground, the mode of action, and the important details for construction.Pipe umbrella support systems are applied in difficult ground conditions, so a special developed measurement arrangement was used to observe deformations ahead of the working face during tunnelling. The evaluation of collected data sets identifi ed that cased-drilling systems have clear advantages compared to predrilling systems during the installation process in weak ground conditions. This may become important depending on project requirements, so this difference must be considered in design as well as in the tender document specifications.

The Bureau of Mines conducted small-scale batch and semicontinuous tests on the reduction of zinc sulfide with iron according to the reaction ZnS + Fe ? FeS + Zn to determine reaction kinetics in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,400° C and to investigate the potential use of a scrap iron reductant. Batch tests indicated that a temperature of at least 1,300° C with a 1:1 mole ratio of Fe to ZnS is needed for good zinc recovery. Semicontinuous tests were conducted, using four zinc concentrate samples, containing various percentages of copper, cadmium, and lead, which were reacted with iron and iron contaminated with iron oxide and tin in an externally heated graphite furnace. Analysis of the zinc metal and FeS matte reaction products showed cadmium to be entirely in the zinc metal, copper to be in the FeS matte, and lead to be about 60 pct in the zinc metal and 40 pct in the matte. Tin reported to the matte, and none was detected above the O.OS-pct level in the zinc. Sulfur dioxide was not detected in the offgas when up to 20 pct of the iron was replaced by Fe203.

The acceptable rate of rise of the tailings beaches on upstream-raised tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is critical to life of mine planning. This is illustrated through a case study in Western Australia presented in this paper. Accurate estimates of expected beach slopes, the maximum rate of rise at which the tailings can be placed, and the dry density that the tailings solids will achieve after deposition (stored density) are required in order to design TSFs that will allow upstream raises to be constructed safely and economically. Where operations have been occurring for some time, these three parameters are able to be measured and can be well-defined. If process plant throughputs are proposed to increase through mine expansion, for example, increasing the rate of rise of the tailings can compromise the potential for upstream TSF raising, thus influencing the viability of such an expansion, the timing for its implementation, and significantly increase costs.This paper outlines how rate of rise can be a key constraint, and that ‘rules of thumb’ that are typically applied may not result in the outcomes they were meant to achieve. An example of an experimental method to justify an increase to the ‘rule of thumb’ ~2.5 m/year limit for gold tailings in a semi-arid climatic setting is discussed, followed by rate of rise modelling that ultimately framed the decision-making process for a mine expansion. The rate of rise modelling method was adopted to carefully distribute tailings deposition across four TSFs, comprising nine separate tailings cells, in order to maintain appropriate rates of rise. The implications resulting from various deposition splits are presented, including the need for expansion. In addition, this paper outlines the effect of rate of rise on the state (density) of the tailings after deposition, and provides commentary on how anecdotally acceptable rates of rise, based on the aforementioned ‘rule of thumb’ of 2.5 m/year may not provide assurance of geotechnical stability through the tailings achieving a dilative state, as has been thought in the past. An example of the influence of rate of rise on the state of the tailings, with respect to air-drying and the critical state line (CSL) for the material, is presented. The data indicate that reducing the rate of rise may allow a higher dry density to be achieved through air-drying (evaporative desiccation), sufficient to move the material from the contractive to the dilative zone (i.e. from above the CSL, to sufficiently below it).CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2018. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el manejo adecuado de dichas herramientas a través del uso de una base de datos, donde existe una estructura basada en el software (VISUAL FOXPRO, PARADOX, etc) y asi ejecutarla mediante una aplicación gráfica que permita tener una representación de lo estudiado como ocurre en un muestreo geoquímico.

The extraction of quartz from siliceous iron ores by dissolution in sodium hydroxide solution has been described in detail in AIME Transactions. l923 data reported covered the temperature range from 230-416°F, where a continuous increase in the amount of silica extracted with increase in temperature was found. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some unexpected results of more recent work exploring principally the range of 500600°F where higher rates and greater amounts of silica extraction were antici-p ted. In brief, the experimental procedure consists in digesting the ore under pressure in solutions of sodium hydroxide, filtering the suspension and weighing and analyzing the dried residue for iron content. The amount of extraction is calculated from the weight loss or from the iron analysis of the residue and that of the original ore.

When a new bridge was needed across the upper reaches of the Yellowstone River in Montana, removing the old concrete bridge piers became an environmental concern for the highway department engineers. The location is about fifty miles downstream from the north edge of Yellowstone Park. The determination was made by the federal and state agencies charged with protecting the resource, that the old piers had to go but the river bed had to remain unchanged. Concerns were expressed that removing the concrete presented the potential for environmental damage to this protected portion of the river. These concerns prompted the state to place stringent restrictions on the contractor in the way they carried out the demolition and disposal of the piers. The reinforced concrete masses had to be removed to an elevation at least fifteen feet below the river bed and every bit of concrete debris had to be removed from the river channel. Explosive removal was discouraged, but the only other options: saw cutting, mechanical or chemical breaking, were not viable.

The total production of nonferrous metals in China is 31.35 million tons in 2010, which ranks first in the world for the past ten years. Large quantities of solid wastes including slag, residue, ash, and dust are produced every year in the production of nonferrous metals. These secondary resources are renewable, not only contain abundant valuable metals which can be recycled by metallurgical processing, but also could eliminate the pollution to the environment. In this paper, the status quo of the main nonferrous metals recycling in metallurgical industries in China was summarized, and the future development of waste processing and resource recycling was prospected.
