THE oil and gas lease is the basic contract of the oil and gas industry; it is the foundation stone upon which the producing industry, particularly, is based. As the industry is precarious and highly speculative, the foundation contract should be of the utmost integrity and certainty. But right there an anomaly exists; the oil and gas lease is the most obscure, most uncertain, doubtful contract in the realm of law today. That is a condition that must be considered when taking oil and gas leases, and when buying, selling, and holding them. It may fairly be asked why should this industry rest upon so insecure a foundation. Why should not the oil industry rest upon the contract that is the basis of all industry, the warranty deed? There are many contributing reasons, but the principal one is business expediency. The Anglo-Saxon idea of ownership of land is that every land owner owns from the center of the earth to the sky all that is above and all that is below-consequently the oil and gas are owned by the person who owns the surface. That idea is not exactly true with reference to oil and gas, for many states have adopted the doctrine that oil and gas are like wild animals; they are fugacious and migratory and belong to the man that traps them. But, except for that doctrine, we believe that oil and gas are owned by the owner of the surface, wherein we differ from the Latin-American countries where the mineral rights are owned by the government. The United States was settled largely by homesteading. The owners of land were, in the main, farmers, who did not have the means or the faith to drill for oil or gas. The operators or speculators did not want to buy the land on the mere possibility of finding oil; hence a compromise resulted by which the land owner gave the speculator or the operator what he called an oil and gas lease, or a right to go upon his land and drill for oil and gas. What is supposed to be the first oil lease placed on record reads as follows: Agreed this 4th day of July, A.D. 1853, with J. D. Angier of Cherrytree township in the county of Venango Pennsylvania that he shall repair up and keep in order the old oil springs on land in said Cherrytree township, or dig and make new springs, and the expense to be deducted out of the proceeds of the oil, and the balance, if any, to be

Introduction The commercial use of ion exchange resins to recover uranium evolved in the decade following 1950 when significant efforts were made to recover this vital element economically and efficiently from low grade ores. It was discovered that in both acid and alkaline systems, uranium exists as an anionic complex. This led to the application of anion exchange resins to concentrate and purify the uranium product. While this is the simplest statement of what an ion exchange resin does in the recovery of uranium, it should not be forgotten that the industry is continuing to evolve new methods in mining and processing which affect ion exchange operation. The inception of solution mining, the use of expanded bed ion exchange columns and the development of continuous ion exchange systems represent several examples of this continuing evolution in the industry. Throughout all of the changes in equipment designs and variations in solution compositions, the purpose of the ion exchange resin remains the same - to concentrate and purify uranium. Ion Exchange Resins When evaluating ion exchange resins for a uranium recovery project, the task that faces the chemist or process metallurgist is an assessment of the efficiency and, therefore, the economics of the various candidate resins for a given project. This assessment should include consideration of both physical factors such as particle size, density, hydraulic expansion and pressure drop as well as chemical factors such as the uranium loading and elution characteristics. For any given application, the differences in the physical and chemical behavior of ion exchange resins are a function of the conditions used to manufacture those resins. Therefore, an understanding of the way in which manufacturing variables affect resin behavior is important. Since most uranium recovery projects are concerned with recovery of the anionic complexes of uranium using anion exchange resins, this discussion will be restricted solely to the family of anion resins. The majority of the ion exchange resins used in commercial recovery operations look similar to the resins shown in Figure #1. [ ] Most of these materials are based on a styrene- divinylbenzene copolymer. The liquid monomers, styrene and divinylbenzene, are charged to a co-polymer reactor containing water. The water insoluble monomers are then mixed with the water to suspend oil-like droplets of the monomer mixture in. the water. The entire reaction mixture is then heated causing the monomers to polymerize into sol id thermoset plastic spheres. The spherical nature of the particle, the particle size distribution and the primary crosslinking level are fixed in this step in the production process. Figure 2 is a simplified illustration of this step of the process. [ ]

"The high temperature oxidizing-chloridizing roasting is one of useful methods to separate nonferrous metals from pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag. However, as one kind of main nonferrous metals in pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag, copper’s chlorination behavior is not demonstrated. In the present study, chlorination behaviors of CuO, Cu2O and CuS at the temperature range of 1025-1175 ? in air by simulating the chloridizing roasting process of pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag have been investigated. It is shown that Cu2O and CuS is much easier to remove, CuO is refractory to remove. In addition, the presence of SiO2 and CaO increases the Cu removal rate from CuO while the presence of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO and MgO decreases the Cu removal rate from Cu2O. Fe3O4 influences the Cu removal rate from CuO and Cu2O positively.IntroductionAs two kinds of significant secondary resources, pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag contain not only abundant iron but also considerable copper, lead, zinc etc. Millions of tons of pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag were discharged from nonferrous metal and chemical industries annually [1, 2] in China. The pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag are formed by roasting of minerals at a high temperature, so the properties of them are distinctly different from the natural iron ores, and the iron in them is closely associated with copper, lead, zinc and other nonferrous metals. High-quality pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag containing high iron and low impurities can hardly be obtained, leading to their low utilization degree [3]. Chlorination is characterized by the high reactivity of chloridion, the high volatility and low melting point of metal chlorides, and the big differences in the formation of metal chloride. Therefore, chlorination is widely applied in extraction metallurgy."

In the manufacture of gun forgings and other steel parts that, in service, are subject to sudden high stresses and shocks, it is most desirable to use steel possessing the greatest toughness and ductility possible without sacrifice of strength. In order to obtain this condition, it is necessary to procure steel that shows the highest possible elongation and reduction of area without lowering the tensile strength and clastic limit. Proper heat treatment of the steel can control this condition within certain limits. When heat treatment has failed to produce the desired results, metallurgists have used steels containing molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, chromium, tungston, etc. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method by which these desired physical properties may be procured—by the elimination of certain impurities that inherently exist in steel made by the open-hearth process, and without the use of expensive alloys. Design of Gun Forgings In the manufacture of gun forgings, a certain elastic limit is fixed by the designer, and the walls of the gun arc made of the proper thickness, allowing a suitable factor of safety for the high stresses and sudden shocks that occur during gun firing. The clastic strength of the gun is about 1.4 times the stress set up at any point along the bore of the gun during firing with the maximum powder charge. As the stresses set up in the walls of the gun during firing are mostly "tangential," all physical tests are taken in this direction. Due to the length of the forgings, these tangential test bars are always taken at right angles and transverse to the direction of flow of the metal in forging. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied the 33,900-acre Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area (NV-060-338), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied lies between the towns of Silver Peak and Dyer, about 40 miles southwest of Tonopah, in Esmeralda County, Nevada. There are no producing mines in the area studied. However, development of Sunshine Mining Company?s Sixteen-to-One silver-gold mine, located in the Silver Peak mining district near the eastern edge of the study area in the early 19801s, has stimulated recent interest. The Sunshine Mining Company claimed two sites within the study area in 1985. Also, Intermountain Resources, Incorporated, located a group of claims at a prospect along the west side of the study area in the Dyer mining district, and in 1986, began drilling. Other claimants are holding two other claim groups by assessment. At the five currently (1987) held sites, precious metals occurrences are being investigated. There are no patented mining claims or mineral leases in the study area.

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

"Titanium dioxide (T1O2) has been widely used as pigment in paints, paper and cosmetic products, as well as high-tech applications such as PV Cells, semiconductors, biomedical devices and air purification. T1O2 pigment is primarily produced by the high temperature chloride process, resulting in considerable CO2 emissions. A novel hydrometallurgical process for making T1O2 pigment without direct CO2 emission is investigated. The new method promises to eliminate direct CO2 emissions, consume significantly less energy, and produce minimal environmental waste. The novel process involves molten salt roasting of titania slag, with subsequent washing, leaching, solution purification, hydrolysis, calcination and post-treatment stages, resulting in high-purity anatase or rutile pigments while realizing significantly reduced environmental impacts. Pigment whiteness is critically sensitive to trace amounts of discoloring impurities such as iron and chromium. Several methods for reducing the levels of these impurities are investigated. Energy consumption and emission models are also developed.IntroductionTitanium dioxide (T1O2) is one of the most commonly used minerals in the chemical manufacturing industry. It has been commercially processed since the early 1900's, and has a wide variety of applications. Pigment is used in paints [1], plastics and paper [2], sunscreen [3], cosmetics and even as a food additive [4]. T1O2 has also been used in photovoltaic cells [5], biomedical devices [6], and in air purification [7]. T1O2 pigment has a refractive index of 2.7, which imparts a high level of opacity (and hence whiteness) to whatever material it is added [8]."

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

I HAVE now the duty—the very pleasant duty—to perform, of presenting to the Hon. Abram S. Hewitt the Bessemer gold medal for distinguished services to the iron and steel trade. When this matter was brought under consideration in London it was well known that, as Mr. Hewitt would be the first to acknowledge, there is more than one man in America upon whom we would gladly have cm ferred this distinction, and to whom this merit might be justly at tributed ; but Mr. Hewitt has been long known to our distinguished members on the other side of the Atlantic as one of the most active minds in the investigation of new methods of manufacture, and one of the most enterprising metallurgists on this side of the Atlantic. Well, gentlemen, we proposed to Mr. Hewitt that he should receive this gold medal, but I think it is quite right, and is his due, that I should state that he at once declined to receive it; and he declined in a manner which rendered it impossible to any one but very per sistent friends and very obstinate Englishmen to refuse. When we heard that our American friends had conferred once more upon Mr. Hewitt the distinction of President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and particularly with reference to our contem plated visit, and when we heard that he had been elected unani mously to that position, we felt that we had received the stamp of approval from this side. Gentlemen, as I said before, Mr. Hewitt has long been known to many of us in England as an advocate of scientific education. A report which he made of the metallurgical products at the Paris Exposition in 1867 was one of the matters which drew very clearly and distinctly the attention of the English iron and steel trade to the necessity of further improvement in our technical education as to iron and steel; and it was one of those beginnings which led ultimately to the foundation of the Iron and Steel Institute. Yield stress and plastic viscosity values, determined from shear rate-shear stress relationships, were found to be a linear function of coal concentration for coal-water slurries containing 40, 45, 50, and 55 weight-percent of powdered coal. In the laminar region, the flow is described by an equation derived from the fact that the square root of the shear stress varied linearily with the square root of the shear rate. In the turbulent region, the friction factor was found to be inversely proportional to the velocity to the 0.12 power.

The present work presents a new theoretical interpretation of the flotation process, which can also be applied to other mineral processing physical unit operations. This interpretation is part of the æModelo OperacionalÆ (Operational Model) that was developed as an attempt to establish a new theoretical basis for mineral processing unit operations. In the case of flotation, a book was edited by one of the authors in Brazil (Mass Concentration by Froth Flotation, in Portuguese and Spanish).The model establishes a link between a natural phenomenon (migration of particles from the pulp to the froth) and a real industrial phenomenon (mass concentration by operational interference). In this model, flotation is viewed as a phenomenon of macromolecular mass transport (of particles) between froth and slurry phases. Mechanisms for mass transport and particle flow between phases as a function of the hydrophobic potential in each phase are discussed. By establishing the so-called equilibrium distribution curve between phases it is possible to calculate macroscopic balances that are related to metallurgical results, which in turn are a function of the operational line that is required by the process itself. The number of cleaning stages and their efficiencies can also be determined by simple laboratory-scale experiments.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has changed greatly over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors, including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different than for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with the belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

Carbochlorination tests were conducted with matched particle-size fractions of rutile, ilmenite and high-titania slag in a small bubbling fluidized-bed reactor. The effects of temperature, the type and proportion of solid reductant in the charge, and the fraction of Cl2 in the fluidizing gas were investigated. Tests confirm the need for solid carbon in the bed if chlorination is to run at high rates. With solid carbon in the bed, CO supplied with the fluidizing gas does not increase significantly the degree of chlorination after 75 minutes. Ilmenite is chlorinated more quickly than titania slag, which in turn is chlorinated more quickly than rutile. Rates of chlorination at 1100°C and 1000°C are much the same and significantly higher than at 900°C. Chlorination is associated with significant increases in particle porosity (even for rutile), which is brought about by the rapid initial chlorination of FeO and MnO (in ilmenite and slag) and (it is argued) by the chlorination of Ti2O3 which forms at high-energy surface sites. A reaction mechanism is presented; where possible, its validity is demonstrated by the support of empirical observations.

The heat of formation at 0°C of the intermetallic compound AgMg as a function of composition has been determined by tin-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the heat of formation is determined as the difference in the heat effects, at infinite dilution, on dissolution of the compound and a mixture of its components added alternately to liquid tin from a reference temperature, such as 0°C. The experimental technique and method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The compound AgMg is a 0 electron compound with a CsCl structure.2 In nonstoichiometric compositions of the compound, atoms of the excess component are substituted on the AgMg lattice.3,4 The homogeneity range is approximately 43 to 52 at. pct Mg at room temperature and 38 to 65 at. pct Mg at 500Oc.2 Single-phase alloys outside the homogeneity range at room temperature can be prepared by quenching. The specimens used in this investigation contained from 39.0 to 54.8 at. pct Mg. They were made available, together with analyses, by the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Co. Metallographic examination of the quenched specimens containing 39.0 and 54.8 at. pct Mg gave no indication of the presence of a precipitated phase. The measured heats of formation are listed in Table I. In a calorimetric run, four to six additions each of a specimen and the corresponding mixture of the components were made. One or two calorimetric runs were carried out with each composition depending on the amount of samples available. The limits stated in the table represent the experimental precision and not the absolute accuracy of the measurements. Thermodynamic investigations of the compound AgMg have been made by Trzebiatowski and Terpilowski 5 and Kachi.6,7 The heats of formation at 500°C derived from the combined electromotive-force values of these investigators8 are more exothermic than the heats of formation at 0°C reported here, Fig. 1. The differences cannot be explained by the difference in temperature. This is shown by the published heat capacity of the stoichiometric compound, which obeys the Kopp-Neumann rule from 0" to 500oC.9 The heats of formation derived from equilibrium data are generally considered to be less accurate than those determined by calorimetric methods because small errors in the change of the equilibrium values with temperature have a large effect on the calculated value of the heat of formation. The heats of formation derived from the combined published electromotive-force values reach a maximum at 56.0 at. pct Mg.8 Kachi reports a maximum of -4.7 kcal per g-atom at the stoichiometric composition.7 The present results also indicate a maximum at or near the stoichio metric composition, Fig. 1.
