"The spontaneous combustion of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is one of the seriously threat encountered in coal mining and storage. The dynamic accumulation of internal heat in coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) provides continuous heat-source for coal spontaneous combustion. Combined with the features and characteristics of coal pile storage, a technology of heat pipe(HP) is applied to enhance heat transfer. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal storage piles (hillock) due to regeneration, a method using heat pipes to destroy the heat preservation conditions of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is proposed, which reduces the risk of coal spontaneous combustion and prevents coal fire. A theoretical model of Coal-Thermosyphon has set up to analysis the radius of cooling effect area quantitatively. An experimental equipment of the heat transferring in a set of heat pipe, which used to study the influence on coal pile temperature distribution, has been designed. Results show, the heat pipe has a significant effect on inhibiting the coal spontaneous combustion process by destroy the heat preservation conditions of the coal. Under the experimental conditions, the most obvious coal temperature decline appears at radius 20.0mm around the pipe, dropped from 45.8? to 32.5?, a decline of 29%; the coal pile temperature at radius 420mm from 12.9? to 12.4?, a decline of 3.87%. And the research offers an effective and new approach in its application and promotion for preventing and controlling in coal spontaneous combustion.INTRODUCTION China is one of a few countries which utilize coal as the major source of energy in the world, and is the one whose characteristic of energy structure is rich coal, deficient oil and lean gas. Relatively speaking, China is abundance in mineral resources. The coal, which is the fundamental resource in the process of industrialization, is the main energy in china. Thus China cannot alter the situation of coal consumption dominated a leading role in its energy structure in near term.A massive of coal gangue would be produced every year in China with the mining activities. And it’s estimated that almost 360 million tons gangue were dumped in 2003, accounting for 10 percent of the whole coal production. Huge numbers of coal waste piles have more than 2,600 seats, which cover an area of over 12,000 hectares. Worse more, the coal gangue still has an annual growth rate of 100 million tons. Toxic smokes and greenhouse gases are discharged directly and prolongly into the atmosphere due to coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Even worse, waste dump explosion cause massive losses and are able to endanger the safety of workers. For example, one waste dump of the NO.4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Group Co., Ltd. occurred twice of explosions in 2005, and about 3.13 million tons of waste rocks were thrown within the range from 100 to 300 meters, eight people were killed and 122 rescuers and miners were burned, and economic losses were estimated more than 3,000 million."

Automatic control instruments were utilized by the Bureau of Mines for routine assays of large numbers of oil shale samples and other bituminous materials. The standard Fischer assay method was automated by automatically controlling the heating cycles of a battery of 12 electric heaters with electronic controllers and programmers. The condensers were cooled with a modified automatically controlled refrigeration bath. The complete assembly consisted of 12 retort units, necessary control instruments, and the refrigeration bath. This equipment was capable of producing more consistent results than those previously obtained with the gas-heated retorts and of increasing the output of assays substantially with no increase in operating personnel.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain, or Germany are only forerunners of this development—their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic, and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as how can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry’s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia, and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later.

This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

Over a recent 20-month observation period, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained seismogram records from a single vertical-component, short-period seismometer installed at the surface of a metal mine in northern Idaho. The seismic events were analyzed for local (Richter) magnitude (M), time of occurrence, location, and relation to rock bursting and production blasting. Approximately 150 seismic events with -0.5 = M = 2.9 were located within the mine, yielding a b value (slope of the logarithm of the number of events with magnitude greater than M versus M) of 0.5. Event locations were constrained using a dense underground array of high-frequency accelerometers. Twenty of the surface-recorded events, with 0.5 = M = 2.9, were associated with rock bursts that produced damage requiring at least 1/2 day of cleanup and/or repair. Other possibly hazardous rock bursts, with magnitudes as small as -1.1, were numerous but were not associated with significant structural damage. Approximately 60 pct of the seismic events with M > -0.5 and 75 pct of damaging rock bursts occurred within 45 min of blasting. Estimates of characteristic rupture dimensions for rock bursts with -1.1 = M = 2.9, based on a conventional dislocation shear-slip model of failure, range from 3 to 300 m.

By American tradition, if not by rational decision, publicly owned natural resources have been transferred to private industry for processing. The process of transfer requires specific determination of the price which the patentee, buyer, or lessee must pay to the government in exchange for the right to develop a resource, and selection of the patentee, buyer, or lessee from among several possible contestants. Pricing of natural resources owned by the government presents a set of problems quite different from ordinary commodity pricing. Natural resources in situ are not homogeneous commodities. Within any class of natural resources, specific leasable parcels will differ in value by reason of location and accessibility, as well as quality and quantity. Thus, there is no "going price;" every lease within a specific resource class will have a different value. To complicate further the pricing and buyer selection problems, competition may not be reliable. Natural-resource markets are characterized by oligopsony conditions. In a significant number of cases, as will be shown later, there has been only one bidder for a given lease, and in most lease sales the number of bidders is equal to or less than three. As a further complication, there is great uncertainty regarding the value of specific resources, even among the best-informed buyers, as well as within the leasing agency. In some instances, particularly with regard to oil and gas resources, there may be uncertainty about the presence of resources, as well as the quantity and quality of any resources contained in the tract offered for lease. In other cases, such as oil shale and some deep ocean minerals where new technologies are involved, the presence of the resource is clearly established. There may be a relatively high degree of knowledge about the quantity and quality of the resource, but there is great uncertainty concerning the cost of production. These problems in total make it difficult for the leasing agency to appraise accurately the resource to be leased, as well as for the potential bidder to calculate a bid price that will yield him a normal profit. The pricing goal of the federal government as the seller or lessee may be to capture the economic rent; that is, the price of a resource might equal its discounted present value. A required price substantially above this amount would either generate no bids, or, in the long run, would bankrupt the buyer. A price below this amount is a disguised subsidy to the lessee. A subsidy to mineral lessees, as to any other economic interest group, as a minimum should be justified by a clear showing of net external benefits from the economic activity. In the case of timber sales by the U.S. Forest Service, the Forest Service Handbook asserts that "the aim in national forest stumpage appraisal is to determine market value,"8 and "market value" is equated to "fair market value." The existing US-70 Bridge over the Gila River at Bylas, Arizona is planned to be replaced due to its current poor condition. The replacement bridge is planned to be a 15-span, 1,904-foot (580 meter) long bridge, the third-longest bridge in the state highway system. Within the Gila River floodplain, granular alluvial soil is underlain by cohesive lacustrine soil; bedrock was expected due to nearby terrain but not encountered within the geotechnical exploration depth of 166.5 feet (51 meters) or less. Based on the anticipated loading conditions, design scour depths and the soil conditions, the full structural loads are carried by large diameter drilled shafts; therefore accurately determining the axial capacity of the proposed drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The conventional methods for axial capacity determination may be overly conservative to use for design in the site?s layered granular and hard clay soils. An Osterberg cell load test was performed to obtain detailed information on the load transfer from the drilled shaft in side friction and base resistance to allow optimization of the bridge foundation design. The full-scale field test played a significant role in the design of the project?s deep foundations, notably, by incorporating the specific subsoil properties and consequently, an exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading. This paper provides the results of the geotechnical site investigations, drilled shaft load testing procedures, and shaft load distribution from the load test results. Comparisons were developed between predicted axial capacities of drilled shafts using several design methodologies and the axial capacity measured from static load testing. The load test results showed that underestimation of the axial capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading combined with a site-specific design approach, resulted in a substantial reduction of foundation costs due to reduced drilled shaft dimensions.

The Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena North concentrator was one of the first three hard rock mineral processing applications to utilise a HPGR circuit in preference to a SAG milling circuit. This was driven by the extreme competence of the ore that had given rise to throughput issues on the original South Plant. Despite more than adequate capacity and performance of the individual comminution units, the circuit has struggled to obtain full design capacity. A thorough review of the integrated performance of the circuit revealed a wide range of bottlenecks and underutilised parts of the circuit arising from design issues. Interestingly, the major opportunities lie in materials handling issues and mismatch of loads about the circuit. This paper presents the high-level outcomes and the associated opportunities, and is pertinent to all HPGR circuit designs.

Recent trends in blasting engineering and its related fields, at the level of professional academia, have tended to exclude detailed discussion and examination of the formative experiences of the engineering student. In particular, the extra-curricular aspects of the undergraduate program in engineering—focused, in this case, on the summer job—will be shown to contain a wealth of heretofore underappreciated knowledge in the field. In Surveying the Damage: Post Traumatic Stress and Pre-Blast Surveys, I intend to outline and examine some of the more unusual experiences afforded me by my work as a preblast surveyor in the summer of 2007. In this capacity, I was required to make a visual note of existing conditions of surrounding residential and commercial structures within 100 m (328 ft) of two separate blasting sites in central-east Ontario. In the interest of both convenience and specificity, I have attempted to organize the paper as a crossdiscipline survey of the field according to the conference’s list of suggested topics. In the paper’s first section, I will discuss the topic of Environmental Improvement and Remediation by using a case study in which not one, but two dead cats were found during the course of a routine pre-blast survey. The second section will undertake a discussion of on-site blaster gossip as an entry point into a wider discussion of Workplace Communications Management. In the paper’s final section, I will detail an early morning encounter with a 300 lb, stark-naked trailer park inhabitant as a cross-sectional analysis of the topics of Drilling in Hostile Environments, Vibration and Seismology (Sizemology?), Ethics in Blasting, Crisis Management, Risk Assessment and Public Relations. It is my hope that this paper will begin to open up a critical space for discussion of the formative experiences of engineering students during the undergraduate university program in terms of their far-reaching effects on later performance within the industry.

"Shaft bottom structural systems are used in underground mining to support transfer of personnel, equipment and ore to and from underground to the surface. This paper first summarizes the evolution of design philosophy from a concrete tower supported on a concrete plug to the current structural steel design arrangement with unlined shaft walls, clear shaft bottom area with only a concrete housekeeping pad. Then the paper reviews the design parameters, analysis and design, and construction methodology for this rather unique shaft bottom structural system consisting of three sets of hitch beams, with each having specific functional requirements. INTRODUCTION Shaft bottom structural systems are used throughout the world in underground mining operations to provide a means to support the transfer of personnel, equipment, materials, ore and waste entering and exiting a vertical shaft ready for transport to and from the surface via the hoisting system. The shaft bottom structural system, for the Service Shaft (SS) at the Jansen Mine, is designed to accommodate two skips, a personnel/equipment cage, counterweight, services, loading pocket, rope changing, arrestor system, crash (or catch) beams, access platforms, stairs and rope divider system. Stantec and BHP have engineered a unique structural steel shaft bottom system for hoisting system at a Potash Mine. The shaft bottom structural system connects to a fixed guide and cantilever bunton system, used in the vertical shaft (shaft barrel), above the shaft bottom. The geometry for the shaft bottom structural system, shown in Figure 1 a), features three sets of hitch beams, beams which span across the shaft excavation or barrel. At the top of the structural system are two upper hitch beams. These hitch beams support a 64 metre suspended rectangular braced tower (upper tower), complete with steel guides for the conveyances. The upper tower passes through the main station (potash or mining) level and then connects to the top of the arrestor (lower) tower structure via a sliding vertical connection. The potash level is supported by two hitch beams spanning the shaft and loading pocket excavations. The arrestor tower, a braced compression tower structure, is carried by a third set of hitch beams. Below the third set of hitch beams is a short suspended tower complete with access platforms, stairs and the rope divider system."

Methods of Coal Preparation Fundamentally, the object of coal preparation is to increase, economically, the value of a fuel by making it more suitable to the uses of the consumer. This can be accomplished in three major ways: 1.Screening or sizing 2.-Mixrng or blending 3.-Cleaning By combinations of any or all of these methods we can prepare coal to meet standard specifications-a process of standardization which is the more desirable the more nearly it approaches the unvarying quality of packaged goods, where the package you buy today and tomorrow is the same as that you bought yesterday. It should be noted that it is readily possible to get good cleaning and still have poor preparation because of faulty screening and mixing, and, on the other hand, it is possible to get a passable grade of cleaning, combined with good screening and mixing facilities.

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

This work relates to wafer bumping technologies for flip chip packaging applications in the electronics industry. Nickel and its alloys are alternative under bump metallization (UBM) materials because of their slower reaction rates with Sn-based solder as compared to Cu-based UBMs. In this study, we compared the morphologies of the intermetallic compounds (IMC) formed between Sn-bearing solders (Sn3.5Ag and eutectie Sn-Pb) and two types of nickel- based UBMs, electro less Ni-P (EN) and sputtered nickel. Both chunky-type and needle-type of intermetallics were observed between the EN UBM and the solders. In the case 'of sputtered Ni UBM, there is only a layer of scallop-type intermetallics formed, The morphology change and growth kinetics of the IMC in thermal aging process were analysed. Kirkendall voids were noticed from samples ofSn3.5Ag solder vs Ni-P UBM that have undergone prolonged thermal aging at high temperature.

Pittini Group has contracted Danieli in 2011 for the supply and replacement of the existing EAF at Ferriere Nord Plant in Osoppo. This was a very challenging project: giving the fact that the Meltshop was operating already under very high performance level, there were many elements involved for the project to improve (reduce the amount of charges, promote highest possible chemical energy utilization, allow best optimization on existing transformer power, modification on Drop Out box and Water Cooled Duct, Hydraulic System for EAF, Scrap Bucket design to fit to new EAF with existing loading and transport system, Automation System Review and Upgrade) as well as limitations of the existing installation (limited space, lifting capacity building and cranes and the required solutions for fast shell and roof exchange). All furnace parts, as well as installation engineering, were developed and discussed carefully with the Customer to either provide proven and reliable concepts, but also to define solutions for fast installation/maintenance access and quick exchange for offline turnaround. In the end, from disassembly of existing equipment up to the first heat of the new furnace, only 38 days were necessary. First heat was made on January 24th 2013, on the 6th production day 32 heats where produced at nominal design capacity and 28 days after start up 100,000 t liquid steel have already been produced.

The Munsch National First-Aid Instructors Association had its inception during the teaching of a Federal Bureau of Mines first-aid instructors' class at McPherson, Kans., under a cooperative plan of first-aid training. Upon completion of- the course on July 1, 1938 members of the class organized the charter chapter of the association under the name of McPherson (Kans.) District Charter Chapter No. 1. On July 1, 1941, 3 years after the founding of the association, there were 15 chapters in the national council -7 in Kansas, 3 in Oklahoma, 2 in Texas, 2 in New Mexico, and 1 in Arkansas. Although the pioneer work of the association was done in the petroleum industry, the plan will be of even greater benefit to a district in which there are various types of plants, mince, and operations of the mineral and allied industries. Excessive floor and side deformation are major problems in deep coal mine entries in Europe, and in particular in the UK where rockbolt support is used at depths of working of around 3000 ft. This has major economic and safety implications for the industry resulting in the potential for sidewall instability, disruption to mine infrastructure, (belt conveyors, floor mounted transport systems and powered supports), and the requirement to safely manage excavation of large quantities of floor material. European research aimed at improving deformation control is described. The outcomes include innovations in support systems, materials and installation practices, as well as better methods for predicting and monitoring deformation levels. As coal mines get deeper, some entry deformation is inevitable, and methods for mechanised removal of floor lift and repair of sidewalls have been developed to allow production to continue as mining clearances are re-established.
