The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa. Future research should also include the development of methods and indicators for social sustainability relevant for mining – in other words: how do mining companies get ‘a social licence to mine’?CITATION:Abrahamsson, L, Lööw, J, Nygren, M and Segerstedt, E, 2015. The electrification of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) blasting agents by pneumatic loaders is described and discussed. The consequences of the electrification are considered in light of the initiation requirements of electric blasting caps. It is recommended (1) that semiconductive loading tubing be utilized and (2) that the resistivity of the AN-FO be controlled; it is further recommended that the operator (3) test to assure continuity of the electric detonator legwire-bridgewire-legwire circuit prior to insertion of the cap into charge or borehole, (4) keep the legwires shunted but not otherwise connected to ground during loading of the blasting agent into the borehole, (5) assure that the borehole is discharged prior to hooking up the detonator leads, (6) assure that he is himself discharged prior to handling the detonator leads, and (7) assure that the blasting cap leads are never carried to the AN-FO loader. The basis and significance of these recommendations are explained.

Some months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter he had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908, and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel. A brief examination of the tests in Table 1 shows that certain treatments of, for instance, 0.30 per cent, carbon steel are not represented by any test data. Had this been a laboratory research, this information would undoubtedly have been furnished, but as this work was done for commercial purposes the omissions are due to the fact that, at the time the work was done, we saw no advantage in trying every composition of steel with each treatment discussed in the paper.

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) undertook an exploratory feasibility study to one of the most ambitious tunneling projects in the United States. HNTB Corporation was retained to perform the study, deemed the Atlanta North-South Tunnel, which is approximately 7 miles long and consisting of four lanes (or six lanes) starting at the southern terminus of SR 400 extending to the south connecting with the northern terminus of I-675, providing substantial relief to the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85), the most congested portion of Atlanta?s freeway system. This paper summarizes the analysis performed during the first phase of this challenging assignment which, if constructed, would be one of the longest roadway tunnels ever built in the United States.

Titanium bearing blast furnace slag, which contains 20%-30% TiO2, is a valuable secondary titanium resource. Based on the thermodynamics calculation effect of the temperature on the reduction of the slag in vacuum were studied at certain vacuum degrees. The results show that magnesium vapor and silicon monoxide vapor can be obtained at the condition of high temperature and low pressure. The purity of TiC increases with temperature increasing. When the temperature arrives at 1623K TiC can be obtained besides the reductant carbon. XRD result of the powder collected from the furnace cover show that magnesium and silicon in the titanium bearing BF slag leave the slag system during carbothermal reduction in vacuum. From the above it can be concluded that TiC can be obtained from the titanium bearing BF slag and silicon and titanium in the slag can be separated by carbothermal reduction in vacuum and acid leaching.

The basic mining law of French Morocco is the Edict of 1914, "Danir of Jamary 19, 1914, for the Regulation of Mineral Prospecting and Exploitation in the Zone of the French Protectorate of the Cherifien Empire," which, as the preamble states, was promulgated at the instance of the Director General of Public Works, in consideration of the fact that mines constitute one of the sources of wealth of the Empire. According to a consular report, dated May 18, 1923, by Bradford, men- tioned above, the mining industry of that country, aside from the exploitation of the extensive phosphate deposits, can scarcely be said to exist, but the potential field for mining is promising. However, no large-scale exploitation of the mineral wealth of French Morocco can be hoped for until there is complete pacification of large areas that are still in an unsubdued state or until adequate transportation facilities, scientific prospecting, and large investments of cap- ital are assured. An edict in 1920 (Dahir of January 27, 1920) modified the law mentioned above by declaring the prospecting for and the exploitation of phosphates to be exclusively reserved to the Government. The Dahir o. August 7, 1920, announced the creation of the Cherifien Phosphate Office (Office. Cherifien des Phosphates), a State monopoly charged with the exploration, management, and exploitation of the phosphates of Morocco.

"The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. [The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

The dielectric properties and thermal stability of glow-discharge polytnerized films of styrene, chloro-benzene, and other organics and photoresist filrns are presented. Variations in the glow-discharge polymerization procedure are related to thermal stability. Thermal treatwzents to improve the dielectric properties of both positive (A2 340) and negative (KMER) photoresists are given. THIS study of the dielectric properties of thin organic polymer films is part of a program to investigate the electronic applications of organic materials. Thin organic polymer films have been produced in an ac glow discharge,13 with a low-energy electron-beam process,4 and in an rf dicharge. A process has been developed during the course of this program for forming thin organic polymer films in a dc glow discharge. These glow-discharge polymerized (GDP) films exhibit some useful dielectric and insulative properties. Variations in the properties of the GDP films can be induced by changes in the source material (monomer) andor in the conditions of the glow discharge. Thin organic polymer films can also be produced from typical positive and negative photoresists. Some variations in the properties of the photoresist films can be induced by suitable post-application treatments such as thermal crosslinking. The properties of interest in this study are dielectric constant, dielectric strength, resistivity, and thermal stability. POLYMER FILM PREPARATION I) GDP Films. The GDP films were prepared in a dc glow discharge in an atmosphere of organic monomer vapor. The details of the glow-discharge procedure have been presented previously.6 Briefly, under the influence of a dc glow discharge organic vapors can be polymerized in the vapor phase and the resultant polymer (GDP film) deposits on and in the vicinity of the cathode. Substrates placed behind a screen cathode can be uniformly coated over all exposed areas. Pattern definition can be achieved using normal mask stencil techniques. Table I presents the pertinent parameters in the preparation of GDP styrene. Conditions of Forrrzation of GDP Styrene. The rate of deposition for GDP films was monitored using a current-time integrator. The thickness of the deposited film for a given set of experimental conditions was a function of the current-time integral. The fifth row in Table I is a compilation of the deposition rate of GDP styrene films. Other organic monomers behave in a similar fashion. With the exception of the highly halogenated saturated hydrocarbons, all organics subjected to the conditions of the glow discharge form GDP films. 11) Photoresist Films. Photoresists are normally recognized to exist in two forms, a low molecular weight, soluble polymer form (A) and a high molecular weight, crosslinked insoluble form (B). Typical negative photoresists are applied in the low molecular weight form A and converted to the high molecular weight form B by the action of light. (Positive photoresists are applied in form B and converted to form A by the action of light.) Eastman Kodak Metal Etch Resist (KMER) has been chosen as a typical negative photoresist. Polymer film samples were prepared in the same configuration used for GDP films. The KMER was applied in the usual fashion using a 120°C drying step (infrared-lamp heating) and a 180°C post-bake. Care must be taken to completely remove the solvent in the drying step and to properly develop and postbake to exposed photoresist. If the photoresist film is not properly dried and postbaked, severe blistering and peeling will occur during subsequent elevated-temperature exposure. Thickness can be controlled by varying the viscosity of the form A photoresist and the spin rate at application. AZ 340 was chosen as a typical positive photore-

Compressed air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte, Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting. The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems. It is hoped that the basic technique described in the paper will be found to have general application.

"Construction works at the Helsinki city sea shoreline requires dredging and handling of contaminated sediments. Most of these soft dredged sediments are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical and environmental properties of the dredged sediment in order to utilize the material in construction. The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor where the dredged sediments are disposed in basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and transported to utilization sites. The volume of these basins is about 90 000 m3. So far these basins have been used three times during the years 2011-2014. The most applied binder has been cement. Its high price and carbon footprint have encouraged use alternative binders. Other used binder materials include fly ash and end product of desulphurization from coal combustion, and fly ash from combustion of Estonian oil shale. The technical and environmental properties of stabilized sediments have been studies in the laboratory and in situ thoroughly. Some properties of the stabilized sediments which have been studied are: compression strength, modulus, hydraulic conductivity, leaching of contaminants, etc. The leaching test results show that heavy metal leaching is very low with all binder materials tested.1. INTRODUCTIONContaminated marine sedimentsMarine sediments in the coastal areas are often contaminated as a consequence of industrial and port activities, as well as the influence of cities located there. Construction activities and reclamation of shore line require dredging and handling of contaminated sediments since the level of contamination inhibit dumping of dredged sediments into the sea. Based on their technical properties, most of these dredged soft and watery sediments (clay, gyttja, etc.) are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Economic, sustainable and environmentally safe management of contaminated, dredged sediments is a key issue in many construction sites.In the City of Helsinki, mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical properties of the dredged sediments in order to utilize the material in construction. Owing to stabilization / deep mixing / solidification, also the contamination is encapsulated in a monolithic solid of a high structural integrity. Thus, contaminants migration is restricted by the decreased surface area exposed to leaching.The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor (a place of Helsinki called Jätkäsaari) where dredged sediments are disposed into stabilization basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and then transported to final utilization sites. The location and principle of these basins is presented in Figures 1-4. The overall volume of these four stabilization basins is about 90 000 m3."

"Various full-scale test programs and installations of the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) have provided evidence that pre-concentration of the difficult to leach sulphide mineral through gravity can provide significant increases in economic recoveries. The continuous gravity concentrates are intensively treated either by re-grinding or Intensive Cyanidation. Data from various mine sites worldwide is presented. Treatment of complex ore bodies with this low cost methodology may render previously uneconomic ore bodies financially viable and assist in the recovery profile of transitional ore.INTRODUCTIONThe use of gravity is made extremely attractive in complex ore situations due to the low cost of operation, typically a few cents per ton operating cost and lack of chemicals.Gold mines which suffer from poor recovery due to complex mineralogy such as Stibnite, Arsenic, Carbon, Telluride, Silver and other pacifying agents such as Iron, which can form coatings, can all benefit from the process proposed in this paper. The key issue is not overall recovery as much as one of economic recovery. The key to this is maximised recovery at the lowest possible capital and operating cost. Other options such as flotation are reviewed but are not seen in many instances to be the panacea due to issues discussed in the paper. The use of the InLine Pressure Jig in the re-circulating load of the milling circuit is a cost effective means of recovering a sulphide/gold concentrate containing the complex mineral assemblages which require re-grinding and intensive leaching for optimised gold recovery.The benefits of Jig Assisted Grinding (JAG) are many and the challenge over the past years has been developing, understanding, implementing and evaluating the benefits of various flowsheet models. This has involved the reconciliation of results in plant scale trials back to the original laboratory test program. The following paper outlines the insights gained in this area through extensive work carried out by many people across both laboratories and plant sites in Australia and overseas. The examples in this paper are some of the work carried out on a few selected sites but similar work has been carried out on other sites such as Penjom, Granny Smith and Agnew. This work has eventuated in several installations which we believe have great importance in the future of the gold processing industry. They will lead the way forward to the modern all-gravity plants of the future.Compared to flotation, for the recovery of sulphides, gravity is a simple option. The simplicity generally translates to low capital and operating cost."

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application. INTRODUCTION Since its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

"We proposed thermit reduction-electroslag remelting method of preparing the large scale CuCr alloy. But there are pores and oxide inclusions in CuCr alloy prepared by thermit reduction process. This paper studied mainly the effects of ratio of reactant and additive on the inclusion type and their occurrences in CuCr alloy. The alloy prepared in different process conditions was characterized via XRD, SEM, OM and TEM and metallographic microscope, in which the existing state and micro-structural defects of inclusions are analyzed. The results show that there are three distinct regions: copper-rich regions, chromium-rich regions and the inclusion regions. Inclusions are mainly in the form of stomata and Alz03 phase, mainly locating in the copper-rich phase and the interface area of chromium-rich phase and the copper-rich phase. Adding Na3AlF6 and heating agent can effectively reduce the inclusion content in the alloy.1 IntroductionIn recent years, with the development ofhigh power vacuum and high-pressure technology ,the CuCr alloy contact material which has many advantages gradually replaced the traditional W-Cu and Cu-Bi series alloy contact material, and become the first choice of material in high-voltage and high-power vacuum switch contacts['-3l. The traditional powder metallurgy method, infiltration method and vacuum arc melting method[4-SJ are using metal Cu powder and Cr powder as raw material by casting molding, and have disadvantages such as high production costs, complicated process, poor product density and low yield, especially in the large size alloy ingots[9-12l. At present, the world regards CuCr alloy new preparation technologies as the first place, and how to achieve a large size the CuCr alloy ingot preparation has become a hot research of CuCr alloy[3l. Zhang Ting-an and Dou Zhihe[l-3l who are supported by national natural science fundation of china successfully successful developed new technologies and core equipment to prepare large-size copper-chromium alloy through aluminum thermal reduction-secondary refining method, and obtained two national invention patents. The method includes two key steps: one is get CuCr alloy consumable ingot by Thermit-SHS with electromagnetic stirring, the other is to refme the CuCr alloy ingot to remove the pores, inclusions and other defects by electroslag remelting technology to get dense and uniform CuCr contact material. The preliminary study results show that means of electromagnetic stirring evidently inhibit effect of alloy ingot macrosegregation during the electromagnetic casting stage, but there are still microstructure defects such as alumina inclusions and pores in the alloy ingots. Therefore, Zhang Ting-an et al refer new ideas of using the electroslag remelting to refine Cu Cr alloy ingots and effectively remove the defects of the ingots such as pores and inclusions [3l _ At present, there is no report of study on the electroslag remelting refining processes of CuCr alloy (the refining slag, remelting current). This article will research mode of occurrence and distribution law of inclusions in the large-size CuCr alloy ingots by Al Thermit-SHS under magnetic field stirring action and provide a theoretical basis for chosing refining slag to remove inclusions by electroslag refining. Meanwhile the article analyses the effect of reduction conditions of Thermit-SHS on the types of inclusions, mode of occurrence and distribution of regular inclusions in alloy ingot, and refer theory for inclusions regulation in the large-size alloy ingots."

This report summarizes an investigation to determine the occurrence and recoverability of heavy minerals in sand and gravel operations in the Southeastern United States. A total of 61 samples from 34 sand and gravel operations in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were studied. Heavy minerals, in amounts ranging from 3 to 400 pounds per ton, were found in all of the samples. Eighty percent of the samples contained 20 to 40 pounds per ton of heavy min¬eral. Valuable heavy minerals, in order of decreasing amounts, were ilmenite, kyanite, zircon, rutile, and monazite. Large-scale concentration tests were made on five samples from four major producers. Gravity concentration by Humphreys spirals and tables resulted in bulk heavy mineral concentrates that graded from 82 to 98 percent total heavy minerals. Mineral recoveries ranged, in percent, as follows: Ilmenite 60 to 95; zircon 96 to 100; kyanite 37 to 77; rutile 89 to 100; and monazite 96 to 100. Separation studies on the gravity concentrates showed they would respond to high-tension and high-intensity magnetic separation techniques to produce individual mineral concentrates. The recovery of each individual mineral from fractionation of the heavy mineral gravity concentrates, in percent, was: Ilmenite 77 to 94; rutile 41 to 68; kyanite 62 to 79; zircon 49 to 83; and rare-earth products, monazite and xenotime, 42 to 96. The grade of each mineral concentrate was: Ilmenite 51.1 to 68.7 percent Ti02; rutile 93.7 to 94.3 percent Ti02; kyanite 55 percent A1203; zircon 58 to 61 percent Zr02; and rare-earth products containing 73.8 to 90.8 percent monazite and 4.8 to 12.7 percent xenotime.

THE ORDINARY well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult, to secure .definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller; has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. GENERAL TERMS Hard and Soft.-Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).
