Lithium is the lightest and electrochemically most reactive of all metals. Renewed interest in lithium coincides with research in lithium batteries and power generation by atomic fusion. Ontario lithium resources are contained in spodumene pegmatites that can form where medium- to high-grade metamorphic volcanic-sedimentary formations are intruded by pegmatite and porphyritic granitic rocks. Spodumene pegmatites occur in at least twelve locales throughout northern Ontario, all of which are in the Superior Province of the Precambrian Shield. Tantalum, cesium, rubidium, beryllium, niobium and tin also were noted with lithium in spodumene pegmatites. Considerable potential remains for discovery of additional lithium and rare-element pegmatites in northern Ontario.

Large-opening underground stone mines pose significant ground control challenges, including the risk of massive pillar collapses. These collapses can result in dangerous air blasts characterized by tremendous force and high velocity. Estimating the velocity of these air blasts proves challenging due to the absence of accurate air velocity instruments near the mine portals. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages closed-circuit television camera footage from the mine. Specifically, it employs the optical flow algorithm implemented in Python to estimate the velocity of the air blasts, providing a valuable tool for assessing and mitigating risks in such mining environments.

"AbstractIn order to raise the enormous amounts of capital which will be essential for the development of Canada's mineral and petroleum resources, this country's resource industry must be permitted to earn an acceptable rate of return. The existing tax regime, with its high rates, complexities and misdirected incentives, presents a serious obstacle to our resource industries in their development of Canada's immense , but increasingly lean, resources. Government tax and other policies are not the only cause of the crisis now facing the resource sector in Canada, but a reformed tax system, with stable and reasonable tax burdens, is required if Canada's resources of minerals, oil and natural gas are to continue to contribute in the future, as in the past, to our national well-being.An independent task force, organized under the auspices of the Canada West Foundation, has recently completed a wide -ranging report: on the future development of Canada's mineral, oil and gas resources. This five-volume report, completed after almost two years of research and study, concludes that Canada •is facing a major crisis •in the development of our resources, It states that unless corrective action is taken now, mineral production and exports could decline drastically after 1985, at the same time that Canada would face massive bills for imported oil because of inadequate and declining production.The task force, chaired by the author of this article, has put forward recommendations for a fundamental shift in both federal and provincial policies in order that Canada's mineral reserves can be developed in the national interest. The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

Transplanting the steps used in exploring and developing mineral deposits on land into the marine environment will help developers. While familiar to oil and gas explorers and many other sea-based industries, the marine environment is so alien to the 90s terrestrial miner that the phrase ?terrestrial mines in the sea? is useful for reinforcing the fundamental parallels in mining sulphides at sea and on land. As on land, the processes of ?pre-feasibility study? and ?feasibility study? will determine the economics of mining a deposit. For many, the step into the sea can detract from the need to follow these familiar and recognised steps used when any new deposit is found on land. The technology to mine sulphides in the 1500 to 2000 m depth range exists. Currently, it is not found in a single, integrated and commercially available system but every element available to build such as system is. Transplanting the thinking of the leaders of the terrestrial mining industry into the sea will perhaps be the greatest challenge and reinforcing the basic steps of discovery - pre-feasibility through to feasibility is the best way to achieve this. After all on land one doesn?t ask ?Can we profitably mine it?? before one can authoritatively answer ?What have we found??. Research by Nautilus Minerals Corporation suggests that the mining of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) will not only be profitable but potentially lower in both capital and operating costs than prevail in most terrestrial deposits. Nautilus is also acutely aware that with the first SMS deposits under title, it will be setting the standards for seafloor mining into the new millenium. Indeed, we have trained on us not only the eyes of the mining industry waiting to see if SMS deposits really do offer radically better returns, but other stakeholders of the sea and the capital markets. Mistakes by any SMS developer could land all developers in ?hot water?. The rush to exploit our deposits for economic gain will be tempered by ensuring there is adequate public debate and consultation for our environmental code. Failure in any facet of a marine mining development could set back the move to the ocean floor.

Removal of toxic anions from aqueous solution was studied using a Magnetic Ion Exchange (MIEX) resin which is a polyacrylic, strong base resin. Gravity based settling is made more efficient due to the magnetic nature of the resin which is advantageous over conventional ion exchange resins. In addition, the magnetic microspheres of MIEX have larger surface area in comparison to conventional ion exchange resins. Over the years MIEX has been successfully used and has gained significant popularity for efficiently removing dissolved organic matter from wastewater and groundwater. In the present study the efficiency of the MIEX resin was tested for the removal of chromium(VI), molybdenium(VI), vanadium(V) and arsenic(V) anions. Effects of pH (2-10) and temperature (25oC-55oC) were examined. In general, low solution pH values were favorable for anion uptake by MIEX. Except for chromium(VI), the metal ion uptake was significantly increased by the increase in solution temperature. The adsorption data were analysed on the basis of chemical speciation and heterogeneous kinetic models.

 The Bureau of Mines, in conducting investigations of atmospheres in mines and tunnels for the purposes of determining and combating hazards to the health and safety of workers, has from time to time closely cooperated with municipal, State and Federal agencies in safety work in engineering and ventilating probleme. Recently the writers have conducted experiments with animals and men breathing helium-oxygen mixtures under pressure. The object of this work was to determine whether helium-oxygen atmospheres can be utilized to advantage in place of normal air for caisson and diving work. In such work the permissible pressures and times of compression and decompression are limited by the physiological effects on man. The major effect is that the nitrogen, (which is the inert con- stituent of normal air and is absorbed by the body tissues and fluids in abnormal amounts when under pressure,) tends to form bubbles in the tissues on too rapid discompression from high pressures. The Bureau of Mines is interested in this problem on account of the pos- sibilities of mitigating caisson illness in tunnel construction and other engine eering operations requiring men to work in compressed air. In addition, the Navy Department is interested on account of the possibilities for extending the range of salvaging and marine engineering operations. The results of the experiments conducted by the writers lead to the following conclusions: Helium is without odor or taste and has physical properties which promise to be of interest physiologically and which have been found to have possibilities of creat practical use, especially in making a synthetic atmosphere that will re- duce the hazard of caisson disease. The substitution of helium for the nitrogen ordinarily present in the air we breathe has been found to result in an atmosphere which it as respirable as that provided by nature. (written discussion ?).-Mr. Sherman's paper, entitled "Measures for Controlling Fires at the Copper Queen Mine," embodies two new and very important features: First, automatic closing of doors communicating with the dangerous area; second, the use of a portable storage-battery fan. His other procedures, such as giving a general fire alarm, getting workmen to the surface, etc., are equally important, but have long been in use in other places. Fire and ventilating doors in connections leading to shafts, air raises, and other large timbered areas, have been in use at other mines; but the method described by Mr. Sherman for operating these doors by compressed air, through a valve on the surface, is, so far as I know, original, and should be installed in every mine where there is danger of fire. Nearly all large mines are now using artificial ventilation, with the result that there are strong air currents in the shafts and other important workings. The most important feature in mine fires is a quick and positive control of the ventilation, for it takes but a few moments for smoke to travel over a large area, with the usual results of suffocation, and destruction of property. A strong air current in an upcast shaft acts as a draft in case of fire, and unless quickly cut off the fire would soon get beyond control. An upcast shaft usually changes to a downcast when large amounts of water are used. Human lives are in more danger from downcast currents, as the smoke travels into the workings.

While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

"This paper discusses the formulation of a linear program with the objective of maximizing the cash flow of the long-term plan of an underground operation. A mine is split into eleven independent ore zones, each characterized by its reserves, required development, and mining method. Based on practical considerations, maximum rates are set for each zone’s development and production capacity. For the total mine plan, a minimum daily production rate is set along with a minimum feed grade to the mill. A maximum daily development capacity is set based on the equipment and labour available. Proven and probable ore is mined preferentially over possible ore in the early years of the plan. Also, the fixed cost of operating the mine is taken into consideration whenever mining activities take place.Once the linear program is solved, it can be critically reviewed, and unrealistic results can be identified. Some resource allocations constraints can then be changed in certain sectors, and new results can be analyzed. “Whatif” scenarios can also be examined, such as determining the impact of hiring a contractor to develop a given sector, or dropping an ore zone completely from the plan."

Iodine is a bluish-black, crystalline solid with sub-metallic luster, and has a specific gravity of 4.93. It volatilizes (sublimates) at ordinary temperatures into a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. Iodine is the least active of the halogens, all of which readily displace it. Only slightly soluble in water, iodine also dissolves in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, giving a deep violet solution. The primary sources for iodine production are sub-surface brines associated with petroleum and natural gas deposits, and as a byproduct from nitrate deposits in Chilean desert caliche. The largest source of iodine is seawater which contains 0.05 ppm, or about 31 Mt (34 million st). Seaweed of the family Laminaria can extract and accumulate up to 0.45 percent iodine on a dry basis. Seaweed was an important source of iodine prior to 1959. However, it remains a significant source of iodine in the diets of many populations throughout the world.

A new type of the cast in situ piles is introduced. The installation of the new pile is based on a pushing in/gaining back procedure. A temporarily closed tip element with square shaped cross-section being attached to an upper circular shaft tube is vibrated into the soil. The steel armature is embedded. Concrete is poured into the tube and, the whole structure is gained back while the tip is in opened position. The width of the tip is less than or equal to 40 cm. The maximum length of the pile is about of 14 m. Great bearing capacity is resulted from the double soil compaction effect. No spoil is generated and, the pile construction can be controlled. The paper presents the results of four loading test at three sites with some soil data.

This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Piokee mining unit and the Piokee expertmental mining project of The Eagle-Picher Co. in northeast Oklahoma, is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Piokee unit, comprising the Piokee, Rowe, Lucky Syndicate, and parts of the Netta White and Otis White leases, is in the SW1/4, W1/2NW1/4SE1/4, and W1/2SW1/4SE1/4 sec. 17, T. 29 N., R. 23 E., Ottawa County, Okla. (figs. 1 and 2), The 200-acre tract is adjacent to the town of Picher and near the heart of the Picher field of the Tri-State zinc-lead mining district.

Sulfide impurities in iron ore concentrates play an important role in designing pelletising and steel making plants. Therefore attempts are made to keep the sulfur content of the final concentrate produced by the plants as low as possible. Generally, in the beneficiation process of iron ore concentrate, the removal of sulfur is performed through magnetic separation systems, followed by reverse flotation. The sulfide content of the iron ore concentrates originated from two main sources, including pyrite and pyrrhotite. In this research, in order to compare the floating capability of these two types of sulfide minerals, two iron ore concentrates with different sulfide constituents, pyrite or pyrrhotite, were selected. Reverse flotation tests were done separately on these samples under similar conditions. Process parameters considered for the tests included pH (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10), collector consumption (150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 g/t) and frother consumption (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 g/t). Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) were the collector and frother used in the tests, respectively. For modelling and optimising process parameters, the Central Composite Design (CCD) method was applied to the test results. Empirical coded equations were obtained for responses involving weight recovery, Fe recovery, Fe grade and S grade. Finally, comparison of test results revealed that the elimination recovery of pyrite sulfides was far greater than pyrrhotite sulfides, and it was possible to remove 84% sulfur content of the pyrite sample compared to minus 30% for the pyrrhotite sample. "Block caving is one of the most economical and efficient underground mining methods and has gained popularity around the world especially for extracting low grade and massive ore bodies. However, during the extraction of ore from the draw bells, gases trapped inside the cave could emit into the working areas; hence, ventilation plays a key role in operating block cave mines successfully where gas emission is a concern. To design an effective ventilation system for a block caving mine, given the dynamic nature of the caving process, it is necessary to develop airflow characteristic curves (P-Q) for a given cave. This study uses a 1:100 scale physical model with an exhaust fan system, and a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of a block cave to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave filled with broken rock material. From this study, it was observed that the cave airflow resistance increases with the decrease in cave porosity and the particle size.INTRODUCTIONThe block cave mining method is gaining popularity owing to its low cost and high productivity. This study considered a case where this bulk mining method is used for the extraction of an orebody that contains uranium mineralization. During the extraction of broken ore from the draw bells, radioactive gases trapped in the cave zone could be released into the production drifts and could create unsafe working conditions in the mine. Mine ventilation systems play an important role in regulating the migration of radon in working areas. One of the strategies to control radon migration in a block cave mine is to exert negative pressure on the cave zone by using an exhaust fan above the cave zone. In order to select an appropriate exhaust fan system, it is necessary to study the airflow resistance of the cave zone (Loring & Nelson, 2006).Extraction of broken ore via drawpoints creates a void volume inside the cave called the air gap. Air gaps with larger heights can lead to air blasts in a block cave mine should the cave collapse. Besides that, the air gap can also lead to decrease in ventilation system efficiency due to recirculation of air flow and associated shock losses. Air gap height can also have a profound effect on the variation of cave airflow resistance (Erogul et al., 2015, 2017). The knowledge of cave airflow resistance is also important for predicting the intensity of an air blast. Cave airflow resistance is a function of cave properties such as broken rock size, air gap, and porosity inside the cave zone (Baysal et al., 2017). Initially, a scaled experimental model with a forcing system was developed to investigate the airflow behavior through the cave, however, this model couldn’t provide an observable change in the airflow resistance when the cave properties were changed (cave porosity, and airgap) This was attributed to the difficulties associated with forcing system in terms of achieving lower porosity values with the available material (lightweight shipping boxes) for simulating broken rock inside the cave zones, and controlling air leakage from the model (Ajitha et al., 2018)."

The Upper Diamond Fork Project, as part of the Central Utah Project Completion Act, conveys water six miles from the existing Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Diamond Fork Pipeline. During design, a Value Engineering team proposed a single-tunnel alignment that would be less destructive on the environment and might have a lower life cycle cost than the proposed design of two tunnels connected by two pipelines on steep hillsides. A decision was made to include this option in the bid process as a design-build alternative. The bid for this option was the lowest and a contract was awarded. During the TBM excavation a segment of tunnel wall caved in containing large quantities of water saturated with extremely high levels of hydrogen sul?de (H2S)gas (measured at 380 to 520 ppm in the air). The Central Utah Water Conservancy District (District) in consultation with Obayashi/Clyde (Contractor) quickly developed anew plan to finish the system by incorporating parts of the original tunnel/pipeline concept and re-bid the remainder of the project as a Phase 2 Design-Build contract.

Bench-scale test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use by the Department of Transportation in the classification of solid and liquid oxidizers. A burning rate test is recommended for evaluating the fire hazard of solid inorganic oxidizers when mixed with a red oak sawdust as the reference combustible. A spontaneous ignition test is proposed for evaluating liquid and solid inorganic oxidizers which may decompose violently or ignite spontaneously when unmixed or mixed with the wood sawdust under unconfined conditions. Test results are compared for various representative oxidizers and a classification system is proposed for use in the government transportation regulations.

Linear grade distribution measurements determined from polished sections of randomly oriented particles can be used to estimate the extent of liberation for multiphase particles of specified size. Two techniques, optical image analysis and microprobe analysis, have been used to establish linear grade distributions. Both techniques were evaluated and compared using variable grade samples of products from a copper porphyry flotation circuit. The statistical significance of the linear grade distribution data obtained by optical image analysis was assessed. The average chalcopyrite content of these samples, as determined by chemical assay was used to estimate the variance of the experimental procedure. For a given accuracy, the number of particles required to obtain an unbiased representation of the sample was determined.
