It has been shown that naturally hydrophobic carbonaceous materials such as coal and graphite can be selectively coagulated and separated from hydrophilic impurities without using oily agglomerants, flocculants or electrolytes. The coagulation occurs at C-potentials significantly higher than those predicted by the classical DLVO theory, suggesting that it is driven by the hydrophobic interaction. In the present work, the energy barriers for the coagulation of a hydrophobic coal sample have been calculated using the extended DLVO theory which incorporates the hydrophobic interaction energy in addition to the dispersion and the electrostatic energies. For the coagulation of minerals present in the coal, the classical DLVO theory has been used for the energy barrier calculation. The results of these calculations provide an excellent correlation with the results of a series of Selective Hydrophobic Coagulation (SHC) tests conducted with run-of-mine coal and graphite samples.

Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,' describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. A CLE Brasil possui uma subestação de 230kV que apresentou sérios problemas de trincas e rachaduras nas estruturas de concreto após alguns anos. Em alguns pontos a ameaça de queda era real. Foi iniciado um estudo de patologia das estruturas de concreto, com uma empresa especializada em recuperação estrutural para conhecer as causas e recomendar a melhor terapia estrutural a ser realizada. Após o estudo, definiu-se a terapia adequada das estruturas. Esta atividade foi classificada como de grande risco e teve foco na segurança da equipe e operação do sistema, de modo que todo o serviço fosse executado sem quaisquer incidentes as pessoas, ao meio ambiente e ou interrupções de energia elétrica. Havia desafios como realizar manutenção nas proximidades da linha viva, serviços em altura com utilização de andaimes, período de chuvas e ventos, trocas de equipes e anomalias. As estruturas tratadas foram Pórticos com 17 metros de altura, postes e suportes para isoladores, TPs, TCs, Seccionadoras e Transformadores. A atividade durou 04 meses e contabilizou 5.752 horas de trabalho. Os resultados foram significativos e dentro do esperado, sem ocorrência de incidentes, prolongamento da vida útil e aumento considerável da segurança da equipe e do sistema de distribuição.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Hisarcik Boron open pit mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 304 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 2 different types vibration monitors (1 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity.

As one of the largest private utilities globally, E.ON currently operates hard coal fired power stations in with a total installed capacity of some 20.000 MW: These thermal power plants consume domestic coals but are increasingly dependent on imported seaborne traded coal (in 2009 approx. 17 million t). Knowing that the company’s reputation and credibility depends in part on how E.ON lives up to the responsibilities along the entire energy value chain, E.ON takes a collaborative approach with the various suppliers. Hence, E.ON’s responsible policy also applies to the procurement of coal; the utility launched in 2009 a comprehensive Corporate Responsibility program with special focus on supply-chain audits. One of the first coal audits focussed on the Cerrejón coal mine in North Eastern Colombia. The authors will share the key learning’s and experience from the Colombian audit jointly conducted with an independent auditor and E.ON experts from the Corporate CR and E.ON Energy Trading.

Adequate treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed " intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence—air, water, food. But " intriusic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. The properties of some recently developed solvent-extraction reagents for the separation of cobalt and nickel sulphate solutions are reported. New commercial extractants based on alkyl phosphonic and alkyl phosphinic acids are described. These reagents show much improved selectivity for cobalt compared with established extractants. Some novel extractants developed at Mintek for the selective recovery of nickel in the presence of cobalt are also described. These reagents, which are based on mixtures of carboxylic acids and non-chelating oximes, are of interest in that no commercial nickel-selective reagents are currently available. Graphs showing metal loading and stripping, and pH-functionality, are presented. together with details of the metal separations achieved in batch countercurrent- extraction experiments with the various reagents.

This study investigates geophysical logging capacity to predict coal quality. It was analyzed for possible correlation, some parameters determined via laboratory analysis of coal against results for the same parameter derived from wireline logs recorded by a geophysical probe. These probes detect variations in some rock physical properties, such as their natural gamma ray emissions and electrical resistivity. Results showed a strong correlation between natural gamma and ash content, establishing a linear model to estimate ash content from geophysical logging data with a low estimation error (less than 5%). Besides, results showed that there is no correlation between sulphur content or volatile matter and resistivity, neither with natural gamma of the rocks. Ash content derived from gamma ray values can be used as secondary information to evaluate coal quality during resources estimation, using methods such as soft indicator kriging. The methodology is illustrated using a case study at a coal deposit in south of Brazil.

Natural chromium-bearing spinels (chromites), which are used as refractory materials in basic steelmaking, are the only commercially important chromium ore and are also encountered as difficult-to-separate contaminants in ore deposits of potential economic value. Techniques for characterization and separation of ore materials frequently are dependent on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals. An experimental program was initiated to explore the effects of temperature and of simple mechanical and thermal treatments on the static magnetic properties of several ore-grade natural chromites. Studies of the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties showed that the natural chromites, which are dilute in the magnetic ions Fe and Cr, order magnetically only at cryogenic temperatures. However, mechanical treatment in the form of crushing produces a magnetic component that is ordered at room temperature and that is of sufficient strength to alter magnetic-separation characteristics. The additional magnetic component apparently is associated with surface structures which develop during crushing and disappear after heating to above about 500°C. Preliminary studies indicate that this surface structure enhances the susceptibility of the chromite grain surfaces to gas reactions at moderate temperatures.

Este artigo apresenta a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera de secagem sobre a resistência mecânica de um aglomerado esférico, com diâmetro entre 3 mm e 8 mm, constituído de pellet feed e silicato de sódio, produzido através de pelotamento em discos e endurecido em temperaturas até 550ºC. O aglomerado obtido a partir deste processo apresenta características que permitem que o mesmo possa ser transportado a longas distâncias e manuseado até a sua utilização na sinterização. As principais técnicas experimentais utilizadas neste estudo foram difração de raios-X, espectroscopia Raman, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análise térmica. O aglomerado foi submetido à secagem em temperaturas entre 100°C e 550ºC e atmosferas constituídas de ar atmosférico e/ou CO2. Durante o processo de secagem, observou-se a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera sobre a resistência à compressão do aglomerado após exposição à água, assim como na morfologia do silicato de sódio, evidenciando uma dependência entre elas. O uso de CO2 durante a secagem mostrou-se eficiente para a formação de um aglomerado com maior resistência mecânica após exposição à água.

ONE Of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bay, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Camaguey province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration.. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has opened up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future. The ore reaches this point at a cost per unit of iron considerably lower than Lake Superior ores, and the presence of a low percentage of nickel gives a desirable steel. It is not the purpose of this article to consider these ores from a commercial stand-point, but rather to discuss their-origin. In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

Uncertainty about the future and orebody should significantly impact evaluation of mining projects. Scenario planning, widely used in other industries, for example in the petroleum industry, can provide organisations with an opportunity to explore the consequences of uncertainty on their future plans. By developing plausible scenarios, scenario planning assists decision makers by allowing them to make systematic and possibly effective decisions for the future. This paper reviews existing mine project evaluation in the context of a new framework called scenario-based project evaluation (SBPE) (Vann et al , 2012) that addresses many shortcomings of existing approaches. SBPE uses conditional simulations (CS) models as inputs which are evaluated against future alternative project pathways (æalternativesÆ). These alternatives are evaluated using multiple plausible images of the deposit (CS realisations) which capture realistic variability and as an ensemble, map uncertainty of various orebody attributes at fine scale. The alternatives can involve different mining, stockpiling, blending and processing strategies. The ultimate output is a (stochastic) set of cash flows for each alternative from which financial measures, such as NPV, can be derived. Alternatives can then be explored in the presence of against external scenarios such as changes in prices, costs, and taxation. The obvious problem with such data rich results is knowing which scenarios or group of scenarios are optimal.An innovative approach to robust stochastic optimisation (RSO) suited to the SBPE framework is presented here for the first time. This approach to RSO aims to deal with the large number of alternatives generated from SPBE. The goal of applying the RSO approach to SBPE is to identify robust strategic alternatives (project configurations) which have the flexibility to deal with variability and uncertainty of geological and processing inputs such as density, grade and process performance. By applying the proposed RSO method, it is possible to deal with uncertainty and identify the best project configuration in the face of a large number of envisaged scenarios. A case study is provided, in which we have tested the application of the proposed method and compared the result with conventional methods. An important conclusion from this research is that selecting the value of the penalty coefficients in the RSO approach proposed is (as is all optimisation) an exercise of trade-offs; a higher net present value (NPV) is generally associated with a higher risk and a lower risk is associated with a lower NPV. A new logging method has been developed, based on measurement of the nuclear magnetism of formation fluids. The nuclear magnetism log (NML) is the only log that responds solely to formation fluids. It operates equally well in both oil-base and water-base muds and in empty holes, and can be used in all kinds of formations except strongly magnetic ones. Two separate NML measurements can be made, one of which provides a continuous formation fluid curve. This fluid curve is called the free fluid log (FFL) and is believed to indicate a minimum effective porosity in most formations. The FFL not only delineates fluid-containing zones, but provides an excellent correlation curve that can be obtained under conditions where conventional correlation logs are ineffective. Preliminary tests indicate that the second kind of NML measurement may help distinguish oil and water zones and provide information concerning permeability and wettability. (The FFL itself appears to provide some information on permeability.) The second kind of NML measurement requires stopping the logging tool for a short time opposite a zone of interest and taking more extensive NML data that can be displayed as nuclear magnetic relaxation curves. In some instances, oil and water saturations for the region immediately adjacent to the borehole can be read from these relaxation curves. INTRODUCTION In 1946, Bloch, Hansen and Packard and Purcell, Torrey and Pound3 independently announced the successful demonstration of the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. During the past 13 years, there have been many applications of nuclear magnetic resonance, including applications to the study of chemical structure and to the measurement of magnetic field strengths. Preliminary experiments on the feasibility of using nuclear magnetism measurements in well logging were made independently by California Research Corp. and Varian Assoc., the Varian work being sponsored by the Byron Jackson Tools, Inc. Since then a cooperative research program on nuclear magnetism logging has been carried out by the Byron Jackson Div. and Research Center of Borg-Warner Corp., and California Research Corp., subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California. The use of nuclear magnetism in well logging is of special interest because it offers a way of making direct measurements on the hydrogen in the formation fluids and not on the rock matrix. Within the past 1 1/2 years, successful measurements have been made with a research model logging tool in wells in California, Tex as, Utah, Louisiana and Wyoming. NUCLEAR MAGNETISM SIGNALS Polarization, Relaxation and Precession Many atomic nuclei possess magnetic moments and spins; that is, they are similar in some respects to bar-magnet and gyroscope combinations. Molecules and their nuclei are subject to thermal motion, which has a scrambling effect, tending to leave as many nuclear spins oriented in any one direction as in any other. However, if a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nuclei tend to align in the direction of the field. The scrambling and aligning forces compete with each other, with the result that a few more spins are oriented parallel to the field than in other directions. This gives a net magnetization, or polarization, which is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field (aligning influence) and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature (scrambling influence). When the magnetic field in, or temperature of, a liquid sample containing protons is changed, the new equilibrium value of proton polarization is not established immediately but requires an amount of time which depends on the nature of the hydrogen-containing materials. The process of approaching the equilibrium value of polarization is called relaxation.'.' Polarization is a vector quantity, and the components parallel to and perpendicular to the magnetic field must be considered separately. Relaxation of the component parallel to the field is called "thermal relaxation", or "longitudinal relaxation", and the corresponding time for this component of non-equilibrium polarization to decay by a factor of e (natural log base) is denoted T. The relaxation of the perpendicular component is called "transverse relaxation", and the corresponding relaxation time is denoted T,. The potential energy of a magnet in a uniform field depends on the angle the magnet makes with the field; therefore, a change of the component of net polarization parallel to the magnetic field involves an exchange of energy between the spin system and the thermal motion of the molecules, leading to the term thermal relaxation for the relaxation of this component. The migration of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel induced by an applied electrical potential has been measured over a range of temperature. In all cases the intevstitial solute migrates to the cathode. The deduced charges of transport are positive, independent of or slightly dependent on temperature, and markedly larger for the beavier mass. These results are interpreted as showing predominating momenlum transfer between electron holes and the acticated complex of the elementary diffusion act. THE migration of components of a metallic system under the action of an applied electrical potential is called electromigration or electratransport. This phenomenon has been known since 1861 and is becoming of increasing interest to metal scientists because of the opportunity it offers to explore the connections between mass transport and electron transport. Until recently, reliable data have been very scarce because of the difficulties inherent in the measurements. In addition, theoretical understanding has been either nonexistent or rudimentary and at present this situation is only moderately improved. Whereas the prevalent notion had been (and is still widely held) that electromigration directly reflects the state of ionization of a component in its equilibrium state in the metal, it is now becoming clear that the major, if not the sole, factor is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers, themselves in motion because of the applied field, and the metallic components in their activated state. It becomes important therefore to obtain reliable data over a range of temperature on electrornigration in systems where only one component moves, that is, either in pure metals (vacancy motion) or in interstitial solid solutions. Our choice of systems was dictated by our measurements' of the Soret effect in solid solutions of hydrogen and deuterium in iron and nickel. Indeed, the main reason for making measurements on electromigration at all is that we suspected a mechanistic connection between thermal diffusion and electromigration. In our former paper' we proposed that what is common to both phenomena is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers in the metal and the atom as it jumps from one equilibrium position to another. In Soret diffusion, however, there is in addition the dissipation of the energy of the jumping atom via pho-nons. We have since found that similar ideas for this interconnection have been developed by Fiks.2 In the present paper we will discuss in more detail our understanding of the mechanism of electromigration itself, but we turn first to a presentation of the experiments and results. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Let us consider a metallic system in which only one component, m , can diffuse at the temperature in question, and to which are applied simultaneously an electrical potential gradient, grad cp, and a chemical potential gradient, grad p,. One may write3 for the material flux Jm and the electronic charge flux Je by applying the condition, grad = 0, to Eq. [I] and evaluating grad(um/T) for the isothermal case and for activity coefficient independent of composition over the relevant composition range. ere, c is the concentration and D the diffusivity of the mobile component. The experimental technique that we have used to measure Z* for the isotopes of hydrogen individually dissolved in each of two transition metals has been developed from a method used by Wagner and Heller.4 (A somewhat similar method was also used by Herold.5) A wire or thin rod of the metal under study connects two volumes of gaseous hydrogen at identical pressures; hence grad um = 0. A direct current is made to pass through the specimen, serving to maintain the specimen at the desired temperature and also to produce the electromigration of the hydrogen dissolved in the metal in equilibrium with the gaseous hydrogen. The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

Recent and on-going studies on the leaching of gold, the properties and activity of carbon, developments in the elution of gold from carbon, and methods of recovering gold from solution are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

IN the work reported here, the heats of formation of a copper-rich Cu-Sn (a) solid solution and of the Cu.Sn (0 phase were measured by tin solution calorimetry. An approximate determination of the heat effect attending the precipitation of 6 from a supersaturated a solid solution was also made.
