"The demand for high purity precious metals began with certain industrial applications having uncompromising requirements for quality and performance. As industrial uses proliferated and as the jewelry industry became increasingly sophisticated, the demand for high purity gold has reached the point where 99.99% is now the standard in the marketplace. A similar evolution is expected for other precious metals.In this paper, we examine both the production and use of high purity precious metals, specifically gold, silver, platinum and palladium. After defining what is meant by ""high purity"", we discuss the various analytical techniques used for measuring impurity concentrations. Next, we review process strategies employed by extractive metallurgists to produce high purity precious metals. Lastly, we describe some of the principal applications for high purity materials including thick films, thin films, bonding wire, thermocouples and jewelry manufacture.Precious metals have unique physical properties that, despite their expense (and the ever-continuing search for more economical alternatives), make substitution difficult if not impossible. These physical properties are dramatically affected by small concentrations of certain impurities. As long as manufacturers continue to demand quality and performance, there will be a need for high purity precious metals.IntroductionIn the precious metals industry, the qualifier ""high purity"" describes any specification over and above commodity grade. High purity specifications delineate lower limits on overall metal purity or upper limits on individual impurities or both. Sometimes, if these special requirements become commonplace, either because of improved refining technology or because of market pressures, yesterday's ""high purity"" material becomes tomorrow's commodity. This transition is now occurring with gold bullion and probably will soon occur with platinum and palladium as industrial use of these materials grows."

For SOFCs, composite cathodes comprising an electronically conducting electro¬catalyst (e.g. LSM) and an conically conducting electrolyte material (e.g. YSZ) are considered to improve the electrochemical performance by extending the active reaction zone to regions beyond the electrolyte-electrode interface, as in the case of conventional cathodes. Interpretation of experimental data for composite cathodes, however, is complicated by the mixed conducting behaviour which results in local overpotential distributions throughout the composite cathode. These local overpotentials depend on many factors, such as the composition, particle size, porosity and thickness of the cathode. Reliable experimental data obtained from composite cathodes requires carefully crafted microstructural parameters in order to minimize the overpotential variations. A mathematical model of a composite cathode was developed using coupled differential equations describing transport and consumption of chemical species, oxygen ion and electrons. Simulations under various oxygen concentrations were used to obtain the reaction order of the oxygen reduction reaction. An apparent po2 dependency was then extracted from the predicted Rp vs P02 data. It was found that this p02 dependency can be significantly influenced by the micro-structural parameters of a composite cathode, primarily due to local overpotential distributions.

"Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. This research was undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing steel from hydrogen - reduced , pyrophoric iron powder . Before steelmaking tests were begun , investigations were made to develop procedures for handling the pyrophoric powder safely , and melting tests were made in a single - phase , electric - arc furnace to determine inert gas requirements for preventing powder oxidation . Steelmaking tests were conducted in a conventional electric - arc furnace , usually by a two - slag basic procedure . Results of the research indicated that ( 1 ) pyrophoric powder can be handled safely and can be prevented from oxidizing excessively during charging and melting in electric - arc steelmaking furnaces ; ( 2 ) little , if any , more electrical energy is required for melting Cerro Bolivar iron powder per unit of contained iron than is required for melting heavy melting scrap ; ( 3 ) high - quality steel can be produced readily from high- grade iron powder , having recoveries up to 95 percent of the total iron ; ( 4 ) steel can be produced from simulated titaniferous , chromiferous , and manganiferous iron powders ; and ( 5 ) the electrical energy required for melting increases with increase in the proportion of slag - forming constituents in the furnace charge .

"In order to mitigate the effect of global warming by preventing the accumulation of atmospheric CO2, a permanent fixation method of surplus CO2 as an insoluble mineral onto the sea bottom is proposed. As the proposed reduction method of atmospheric CO2, the concrete concept of this method is to form an insoluble carbonate mineral (CaCO3) by direct electrolysis of the seawater; Ca2++2HCO3 -+OH- ? ?CaCO3(insoluble)+CO3 2- (soluble)+H++H2O <not as coral reef reaction>, are directly disposed of itself onto the sea bottom. By this treatment, a concentration of carbonate is reduced in the section of superficial seawater, and therefore the absorption capacity of atmospheric CO2 increases depending upon the shift of chemical carbon equilibrium between the mass of superficial seawater and the atmosphere. As no additives are required, or no secondary waste are produced, the proposed method assuming as green-orientated, has possibility to resolve fundamentally the problem of global warming in a green orientate manner.IntroductionRecently, the amount of atmospheric CO2 has been exponentially increasing and it is a main greenhouse effect gas causing the global warming [1, 2]. The concentration of atmospheric CO2 has increased more than 30% (370ppm in 2001) during only last two centuries, therefore approximately 750 Gton-C of CO2 currently exist in the atmosphere, in which 180 Gton-C of CO2 are accounted for the increment during two centuries [1, 3, 4]. In order to avoid the progressive increase of CO2 global abundance, 3 Gton-C of the incrementing amount per year [4], have to be removed annually from the atmosphere."

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Future work will focus on the application of mineralogy in interpreting the behaviour of mine waste under different static test conditions with a view to assessing their applicability and reliability in estimating potential acid generating characteristics of gold tailings.CITATION:Dyantyi, N, Becker, M, Broadhurst, J L, Harrison, S T L and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. ABSTRACT Temperature, solute, texture, and thixotropic effects on time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements of water content in oil sands tailings are investigated. Results indicate that TDR water content measurements are influenced by temperature, residual bitumen, and percent clay in the tailings. A correction of 0.03–0.10/ °C must be applied to the apparent dielectric constant (Ka) to account for the effect of temperature. The Ka-volumetric water content relationships of slurries differ significantly from the commonly used Topp calibration equation. The age of the tailings and the addition of phosphogypsum did not influence TDR water content measurements.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon &apos;Yankee Ingenuity,&apos; innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 266 natural gas samples from 20 States and 2 foreign countries. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to compare the cutting forces required by radial and point-attack bits when making similar cuts. Three radial and four point-attack bits were tested in two coal mines using the Bureau&apos;s in-seam tester to measure coal-cutting forces in situ. Tests were also conducted to investigate the effects of weathering and cleating. The test results show that in each case, at a specific clearance angle, the radial bits required less tangential and much less normal force than the point-attack bits. The resultant of the cutting forces for some types of cut was 50 pct less at mine 1 for radial cuts compared to cuts with the best point-attack bit, and 40 pct less at mine 2. There was some difference between three types of radial bits, but it was not as significant as the difference between each type of point-attack bit. Cutting coal perpendicular to the cleat planes required less cutting and normal force than the same type of cuts parallel to the cleat planes. Test results showed no effect due to weathering on cutting force data. Cutting parallel increased forces only because cuts were made in the rock band.

By customizing the grain size distribution, the glassy area formed on the top of the tap hole varies and supports differently the metallurgical pressure of the molten steel providing increased free opening speeds. In the field of pyrometallurgy, the presence of multiple molten phases with distinct chemical compositions, such as slags, mattes, speiss liquids, metals and molten salts, is a well-known phenomenon. These phases exhibit strongly non-ideal solution behaviour and are mutually miscible to varying degrees. To describe these complex molten liquids, the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM) has proven effective and has been applied to numerous binary, ternary and several higher-order multicomponent systems related to pyrometallurgy. In recent decades, the complexity of high-temperature processes has escalated due to increased impurity concentrations in primary ores, the incorporation of recycled consumer products and the integration of metallurgical plants through by-product and waste exchanges. To address these issues, PYROSEARCH laboratory has been developing large 20-component thermodynamic database using a generalised CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) methodology integrated with experimental investigations. Over the past decade, strategic decisions were made balancing the ability to generate experimental data, prediction power, accuracy, stability of calculations, as well as computational time, which are discussed in the paper. Examples provided for issues of >3 liquid immiscibility, non-ionic behaviour and exaggerated ‘sharp’ enthalpies of mixing in silicate slags, dealing with multiple oxidation states, as well as comparative analysis of pair and quadruplet approximation in MQM.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

This Committee is comprised of representatives from: the Mines Branch, Fuels and Mining Practice Division, Ottawa; the Geological Survey of Canada; the Dominion Coal Board; and the Provincial Research Councils and Foundations. It embraces all coal research in Canada that is sponsored, for the most part, by Government funds.To bring the country's coal research activities to the notice of the Canadian coal industry, the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division, C.I.M., passed a resolution at the 1964 business meeting in favour of recommending the publication of an annual research report prepared by the CACCR. The first such report was published in the September, 1964, issue of the C.I.M. Bulletin; the second appeared in the November, 1965, issue of the same publication."

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss and dilution. The mischaracterization of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of, blasting can lead to significant financial losses due to ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorized as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run-of-mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorized as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have led to the development of innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at the Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures.

Groundwater flow in bedrock units is an important factor to be considered for most mining situations, both underground and open pit excavations. Characterization of the hydrogeologic system into which a mine will advance is an important factor for slope and entry stability, mine dewatering design, and potential environmental considerations including stream loss and water well damage. In addition, hydrogeologic characterization of bedrock is important for locating water wells and for groundwater contamination mitigation. Hydrogeologic characterization for a site begins with a desktop study and often evolves to include drilling, geologic logging, monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, pump testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. In addition to these methods of hydrogeologic data collection, downhole geophysical logging of exploration and monitoring well boreholes provides detailed information associated specifically with in-situ conditions of each hole. The basic suite of geophysical logging tools used for hydrogeologic characterization often includes Optical or Acoustic Televiewer (O/ATV), full wave sonic, gamma-density, fluid temperature, resistivity, specific conductance, and flowmeter. For many hydrogeologic settings, groundwater flow in the bedrock is dominated by discontinuities, or fractures, in the rock. O/ATV logging allows for determination of the frequency (clustering), orientation, and aperture width of in-situ fractures, while sonic logging allows for estimation of intact rock strength. Fluid temperature logging and flowmeter measurements provide insight with regard to potential groundwater inflow zones, and other tools provide information for geologic unit contacts. This paper outlines the process and benefits of using downhole geophysical logging for hydrogeologic characterization and provides generalized examples from industry experience.
