The Waelz Plant at Taiwan Steel Union Co. Ltd. (TSU) was erected within nine months from September 1, 1998 to May 15, 1999. The nominal capacity of the plant is 50,000 tonnes per year of electric are furnace dust (EAFD). The plant, consisting of material handling, a waelz kiln, a waste gas cleaning system, waelz oxide leaching and waste water treatment, was commissioned within three months from July 1, 1999 until October 12, 1999. The specific problem of the plant is the high chlorine content in the EAFD pellets which is up to 6 %. Lurgi Metallurgie GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany was responsible for the engineering erection and commissioning of the plant.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is presently the biggest single environmental problem facing the mining industry. New and expanding metal mines in most parts of the world have to demonstrate their ability to contain this problem to obtain operating permits. Conventional methods of controlling acid mine drainage have primarily been limited to collecting the drainage and neutralizing with alkaline materials which do not provide a permanent solution to the AMD problem. Since acid mine drainage results from the oxidation of sulfides in the presence of oxygen, water and iron-oxidizing bacteria, controlling any of these three factors contributing to pyrite oxidation provides a potential at-source remedy for reducing or preventing acid mine drainage formation. Physical properties such as hydrophobicity also play an important role in the attachment of bacteria, adsorption of oxygen, water, and other ions that subsequently lead to the oxidation of pyrite. In this communication, the suppression of pyrite oxidation by treatment with fatty acid amines (FAA) was investigated. The FAA treated pyrite samples were tested at various conditions of temperature and pressure. At an elevated oxygen pressure of 500 psi and a temperature of 600 C, less than 0.2% oxidation was obtained for the FAA treated pyrite samples, while over 1.2% oxidation was obtained for the untreated samples in 10 hours of oxidation time. Accelerated column oxidation tests at ambient condition showed that FAA mated samples reduced pyrite oxidation by at least 75% in 81 days.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Reiche Zeche is a lead-zinc-silver deposit in Freiberg, Germany, that was mined for over 800 years. Since 1969, Reiche Zeche has been a teaching and research mine with numerous adits for dewatering large amounts of inflowing water. Infrequent metal water quality monitoring in the 1980-1990s and flooding of the mine in 2002 led to a lack of relevant data. New measurements were taken at different level adits and ore veins for comparison to historical values, revealing pH levels as low as 1.95, conductivity as high as 22000 µS/cm, and an overall trend towards less acidic waters. INTRODUCTION Reiche Zeche is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, a former iron ore mine in Freiberg, Germany, in the Erzgebirge mining region of Saxony. The polymetallic sulfide ore found in Freiberg was mined from 1168 to 1969, and though it is no longer producing ore, Reiche Zeche remains as a teaching and research mine for the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. The most important ore minerals mined were sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and silver, and important gangue minerals include calcite, fluorite, barite, siderite, and quartz (Zänker et al 2002). Over one thousand ore loads were mined from this region during operation, which was ceased in 1969 after the lower part of the 700 meter depth was flooded, leaving only the top 200 meters under the surface open for research and teaching. Mined materials from this region can be separated into high grade ore and waste rock. High grade ore, composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite, was brought to surface for smelting during mine operation, and spaces were backfilled with waste rock, which is the primary site of sulfide oxidation and acid mine drainage (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). The waste rock includes remnants of ore from ore loss, veins which were too small to mine, or ore minerals within host rock. Waste rock is primarily composed of biotite gneiss, with sulfides including jarosite, gypsum, minor anglesite, scorodite, and sulfur (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). When weathered, the gneiss forms clay minerals such as illite and kaolinite (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002)."

At Getchell, Nevada a thousand tons per day mill for extracting gold from an ore containing orpiment and realgar was operated several years until early 1967. A cyanide process with a roaster was used in the processing of the ore. Mill wastes were contained in tailings ponds, in which the concentration of arsenic, currently, is one per cent or higher, Studies were conducted determining the effect of the tailing wastes on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the area. Grid and line-intercept techniques were employed to obtain botanical informatics of the area surrounding the tailings ponds. Data of the per cent ground cover, species frequency, and plant vitality as a function of distance from the tailings ponds was collected. The data was compared to other botanical data collected from a control site outside the influence of the tailings ponds. In an attempt to isolate naturally occurring factors for varying plant communities from hose induced by factors derived from the close proximity of the tailings, soil cores were taken along the line-intercepts at intervals of 30 meters. The cores were analyzed for several compounds and elements needed for growth, or known to inhibit growth. Specific physical parameters of the soil samples were also taken. The paper describes the impact made by mill wastes containing large amounts of arsenic on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the Getchell region. Described in detail are the techniques used to make the correlations between the plant communities and the influences of mill wastes.

"Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has the potential to enable a very significant reduction in buy-to-fly ratio compared to conventional manufacturing through the ability to build near-net shape components. Components manufactured from AA 2319 by WAAM can exhibit significant levels of porosity. There is also a variation in the physical appearance of the surface deposit sometimes found on such components. This deposit is similar to those observed on aluminium joined by MIG and TIG welding processes. It has been suggested that both the bulk porosity and the surface deposit are caused by hydrocarbon-based lubricant on the feedstock wire. An established correlation between surface deposit and porosity would offer valuable insight into WAAM products and enable early interventions in quality control or process monitoring based on visual examination. The relationship between the nature of the surface deposit and porosity has been studied for AA 2319 WAAM components manufactured using different wire batches. Evidence is presented to support the assertion that (i) there does not appear to be a relationship between surface deposit coverage and porosity, (ii) batch-to-batch variability in feedstock wire affects porosity. This study has led to a better understanding of the cause of porosity in WAAM components.INTRODUCTION There is a high cost associated with conventional, subtractive manufacturing because of the high ‘buy-to-fly’ ratio, a measure of the initial material bought compared to the material found in the finished part (Allen, 2006; Yilmaz & Ulga, 2016). A typical aerospace product may have up to 90% of the purchased billet of forging machined away which is cost inefficient and high in material waste. Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has the potential to reduce costs and lead time. Robotically controlled weld torches rapidly deposit feedstock wire in layers to build large near-net shapes with mechanical properties similar to those of conventional manufactured parts (Sequeira Almedia & Williams, 2010; Martina et al., 2012; Ding et al., 2015; Williams et al., 2015). A high level of porosity variation has been observed in aluminium WAAM parts (Cong, Ding & Williams, 2014; Gu et al, 2016) which can result in a range of material properties (Rudy & Rupert, 1970). This leads to difficulties in regards to standardisation and qualification of process and parts. In order for WAAM to be used commercially, porosity will need to be understood, monitored and reduced to a reproducible acceptable level or eliminated."

Zia Metallurgical Processes, Inc. has developed and patented a steelmaking process capable of converting iron bearing metallurgical wastes into high quality steel products. The process utilizes a proprietary design rotary hearth furnace to convert iron bearing wastes, pelletized with coal, or other forms of carbon, into direct reduced iron (DRI). This DRI is fed, hot, from the rotary hearth furnace into a Zia All Purpose Vessel (ZAV) where it is smelted and refined into high quality steel. A specially designed turret with three independent arms, each supporting a separate ZAV, comprises the heart of the meltshop. No overhead cranes are required to transport molten metal from the smelting/refining operation to the ladle metallurgy station to the caster to an inspection station and back to the smelting/refining point. The molten steel is contained in the ZAV throughout the operations eliminating the possibility of steel con¬tamination by non-metallic inclusions occasioned by the exposure to ambient air during metal transfer into ladles. The result is the creation of very clean steel that can be alloyed to produce virtually any desired grade from stainless steel to common structural steel.

This paper highlights the mineralogy of the Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. area. The mine is located at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur and is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend. The Betze, Post, and Meikle Mine are major deposits located in the area. The deportment of gold, its leachability, and various process options are also evaluated. Particular emphasis is given to the practical and economic considerations of ore control, and routing of ore to a process option.

Research and testing in a small scale equivalent of a commercial flota-tion plant was completed on four low-grade, iron-bearing materials from the western Mesabi range. Closed circuit-flotation of calcium-activated silica with fatty acid collector developed data for comparison with the batch process and highlighted problems not evident from previous bench testing. The four ore samples contained from 27 to 39 percent Fe and were equally represented by nonmagnetic taconite and semitaconite type materials. Iron concentrates containing 6.0 percent, or less, SiO2 were made 5, all four samples. Of the two material types, the semitaconite was the ore amenable to treatment, yielding iron recoveries of about 90 percent as cc pared with 70 to 80 percent for the other. Pilot plant tests showed that concentrate grade made in batch tests could be duplicated in the closed circuit and demonstrated that the amount of recoverable middling iron varied considerably between ore samples. The continuous tests also showed that water temperature strongly influenced results in the treatment of one ore but apparently was of indifferent consequence in another. Progress in thickening and filtration of flotation concentrates was made through introduction of tapioca flour to serve the dual role of iron mineral depressant and flocculant.

"Pressure leaching and pressure oxidation in autoclaves are important alternatives in the extractive processing of gold, copper and nickel ores. The application of advanced control to pressure leach and pressure oxidation autoclaves could achieve significant benefits as has been shown in alumina pressure leaching. This paper compares and contrasts alumina digestion autoclaves to other mining autoclaves with respect to advanced controls. The application of advanced control in alumina with over 30 units controlled worldwide, and its benefits will be reviewed. The design and potential benefits from advanced control for pressure oxidation and leaching will be presented.INTRODUCTIONIt is this author's position and the purpose of this paper to propose that advanced control could be effectively applied to autoclaves in the nickel, gold, and copper mining processes. This is based on the proven effectiveness of advanced control on autoclaves used in the alumina industry for pressure leaching of bauxite ores. Incremental, but significant increases in production could be realized by applying advanced control to autoclaves, as evidenced by the alumina industry, and this not being implemented in other autoclaves in the mining industry.In addition, today the mining industry is being challenged to improve their production methods. In some markets like nickel, there is pressure to improve productivity and reduce the cash cost per ton. While in other markets like copper and gold, demand is vigorous with favourable pricing, and there are advantages to increase production and productivity given limited plant capacity. Advanced control has proven its capability to improve mineral processing operations through increases in throughput, recovery, as well as reducing variability. In today's mines, autoclaves are being used to a much larger scale and with much larger importance, thus it would be beneficial to improve operational performance through the use of advanced control.Accordingly, it is the author supposition that an opportunity exists in the mining industry to use a proven advanced control technology to improve the operations and financial performance of mines using autoclaves."

Intensive investigations of domestic manganese deposits were conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey during the earlier part of the war minerals investigations when there was doubt that the quantity of manganese needed to produce the greatly increased tonnage of steel demanded for war supplies could' to obtained from its customary sources. Domestic deposits of ores that contain sufficient manganese for direct production of ferromanganese essential in steel Manufacture are generally small, and the bulk of the supply is imported. One of the few large deposits of low-grade manganese ore known in the United States is in the Artillery Peale district in southern Mohave County, Ariz. Manganiforous sediments underlie a very large area. Several large groups of claims, covering the most of the manganese-bearing ground, wore assembled in 1929 and 1930. The greater part of this area was leased by the M. A. Hanna Co. in 1937. Investigations by engineers and geologists for this company revealed that the average content of manganese is very low; but that the Maggio Canyon area, about 180 acres, contains higher-grade material. The company put down 28 vertical diamond-drill holds to explore this ground, under the direction of B. N. Wobbor, geologist.

The suggestion of the use of measurements of trace amounts of mercury as a guide to the location of sulphide ore deposits was first made by the Russian, A. A. Saukov (1), in 1.946. Since Saukov's original work, many others have studied the abundance of mercury in nature, the association of mercury with sulphide ores and methods by which very minute quantities of mercury can be measured in air, soil, rocks, water and plants. The most abundant of the mercury bearing minerals is cinnabar (HgS). Native mercury is also found and sulpha-salts like tetrahedrite are known to have important mercury contents. Other sulphides of base metal deposits contain mercury in amounts ranging from parts per million to as much as one or two percent. (2) The mercury content of sulphide-free rocks is usually less than a few hundred parts per billion (1 ppb - 10-9), Soils usually contain less than 100 ppb and water less than 1 ppb of mercury. Normal atmospheric air contains about 1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of Hg per cubic metre although higher concentrations can be observed near mercury occurrences, sulphide deposits and volcanic exhalations.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

The presence of metallic cations in solution will affect the aggregation or dispersion of the fine hematite particles, depending on the type of cation adsorption: either specific or non specific adsorption. In this work, the zeta potential measurements were carried out on a sample of pure hematite as a function of pH and metallic cations concentration (Ca2, Mg2+, Mn2+, K+, Na+ and Al3+). The objective of these studies was to clarify the effect of these metallic cations on the surface chemical properties of pure hematite. The cations K+ and Na+ adsorbed as non-specific species and caused only the reduction on the values of zeta potential (in terms of absolute value) over the entire range of pH values tested. For the Al3+ cation, in the acidic pH range it adsorbed as a specific species and increased the zeta potential values. The cations Ca2+, Mg2+ and Mn2+, adsorbed as a non specific species at pH levels less than 6.0 and caused the reduction of zeta potential due to the compression of the electrical double layer. However, for pH values greater than 6.0, these cations adsorbed as a specific species causing the zeta potential to increase and became more positive as the pH value increased (alkaline). This effect could be due to the adsorption of some hidroxy complex species of these cations, which contributed to the positive charge. The effect of metallic cations (Ca2+, Mg2+ and Al3+ concentration, at pH 4.0, 7.0 and 10, showed the following results: a) at pH 4.0, increasing the concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ resulted in on a small reduction in the value of the zeta potential. At this pH, increasing the concentration of A131 cations caused the zeta potential to increase due to specific adsorption of a negatively charged Al3+ hydroxy complex b) at pH 7 and 10, increasing the concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ caused the zeta potential to change its charge from negative to positive.
