This paper analysis the medium and long-term perspectives, framework and considered possibilities of sustainable development of RTB "Bor" (Copper mines in East Serbia) after consolidation in the period of transition. The copper mine was opened in 1903. and today is the best quality copper producer on Balcan. This paper are elaborates the problems of privatization, debt, investment, growth of copper production from own mines (and imported raw), opening of new mines, economical efficiency of production, markets, environmental problems and impacts of the recent industry consolidation. The RTB "Bor" is a serious hot spot in Serbia. Unsustainable trends and processes are identified, as follows: open-pit waste dumps, flotation tailings, mining and processing waste waters, air pollution; no efficiency (excessive) using nonrenewal resource in the copper production; inefficiency in the use of energy, water and other inputs in copper complex; transboundary character of emissions of dust; environmental degradation and quality of wide area and ecologically highly risk, etc. Analysing some trends and planning-developmental perspectives and development strategies of company, it might be assumed that in the forth coming period, in parts of the Serbia, the borders areas of Bulgaria and Romania, there is an anticipated increase of ecological risk.

In the present study the effect of using different grinding media, viz, ceramic balls, forged steel balls, 15% Cr steel balls, stainless steel and mixture of stainless steel and 15% Cr steel balls (50:50) on the flotation performance of a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM) UG2 ore was investigated. Test work was conducted using a laboratory scale horizontal tumbling mill and a batch flotation cell. Power draw to achieve a specific P80 was determined for each media type. Changes in flotation behaviour were evaluated in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. pH, Eh and DO levels were also measured. Grinding products of five different media produced similar solids and water recovery, which is indicative of the froth characteristics, but the grades and recoveries of PGE and chromite were different. The product obtained when using ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, producing the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. The products obtained when using stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery. The paper proposes possible reasons to explain these observations which may have significant importance for the operation of a PGM concentrator.

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.

Last September, when I was asked to prepare this paper, I was told the subject was "mining," a broad subject indeed! Rather than choose one of the many important technical and economic details which characterize mining today, I turned to a subject which fas- cinates me: mining's image. If we are to survive and prosper into the twenty-first century, and if industry and society are to continue enjoying the material benefits which flow from mining, we must address the melancholy fact that the general public at best does not understand mining, and at worst does not believe it is needed or deserves to continue. While my point of view is largely that of an American mining executive, I would hasten to point out that Homestake has participated in Australian mining for over three decades, and our subsidiary, Homestake Gold of Australia Limited, is now a major producer in this "lucky country." Does society need a viable minerals and metals industry? The answer is obviously "yes," so the challenge is to change some minds: not just those of the amorphous "public," but on a focussed basis targeting journalists, educators, TV commentators, politicians and opinion makers of all stripes (I thought of using "rifle shot" instead of focussed but thought that might be misconstrued). Along the way we miners must also look deeply into ourselves, our attitudes towards the society in which we function, and our willing- ness to change as well as to seek change in others. How did we become such bad guys? More than a century ago mining was not just accepted, it was even romanticised. In America, we had altered the time-honored concept of "Crown" lands into public lands made easily available to settlers pushing back the frontier. Miners even preceded the farmers and stockmen in what was perceived as nation-building, although by the 1890s there was a growing interest in conservation, especially the protection and management of forests and national parks. Even though emphasis was shifting toward government stewardship and away from trans- fer of public lands to private ownership, homesteading and mining were clearly recognised as valid uses requiring not just access, but security of tenure. Indeed, conservation as it was then understood implied management of the public domain as well as its protection. Initially this was no great problem to the U.S. mining industry, but as the nation grew and competing land uses became more important, conflicts began to appear, first over water rights and later over air quality and destructive mining practices. But these were local disputes rather than national issues, and two World Wars, the Great Depression and post-war reconstruction lulled our industry into thinking that nothing had really changed. After the storm began to break in the 1960s, the mining industry found itself confronted by a growing maze of complex and costly laws and regulations. It took us longer than it should have to realise that, in facing this challenge, we seemed to have lost the understanding and support of many of our legislators and a majority of the general public. "This paper argues that, although specialist mineral engineering expertise is essential for the efficient design and operation of mineral processing plants, the environment in which these skills are supplied to the industry has changed forever, and not for the better. Most of the mineral engineering programmes in western universities have died or are dying. The long-service mine site mentors have gone, operations are run on a staffing shoestring so that there is no longer the time (or inclination) for considered decision-making, and the FIFO model has discouraged continuity of optimisation projects and communication between professionals. At the same time the technical challenges of designing and operating effective process plants are increasing. These trends are not going to be reversed any time soon, if ever. The ability to run efficient mineral processing operations has been materially compromised as a consequence. We propose that well-designed professional development can help to recover this situation, and it can be done easily and cheaply. The workplace is the best environment for such skills development. Professional development training should be integrated with normal duties throughout the early years of a graduate’s service (and probably beyond), and the cost should be regarded as non-discretionary expenditure for the business. If such programmes are properly resourced and managed and extended over longer time periods, there will be a measureable rise in the level of technical understanding and competence within companies and a resulting beneficial impact on resource utilisation and thus shareholder value. The paper outlines some of the approaches that we believe will work, and the benefits that we expect will accrue."

Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. "INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpre-tation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."

This is an audience, I know, that shares my interest in a subject that is currently getting a lot of attention -the tendency of our Nation to draw increasingly on overseas supplies of certain mineral commodities, and proportionately less on domestic sources for these minerals. That we do obtain substantial quantities of some essential minerals from abroad is easy to demonstrate. That we will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt. Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. As with many phenomena, their meaning is open to a variety of interpretations.

"Microbiological metal recovery is an emerging technology likely to play an increasing role in commercial ore leaching, metal removal from process and waste streams, and perhaps ultimately in processing to yield metal products in specified forms or oxidation states. We are studying the potential for using microorganisms for the recovery of elements important to emerging materials technologies and for which domestic supplies are limited and/or low grade. Examples to be discussed include the bioaccumulation of yttrium and gallium. These elements are important in the production of new superconductor and semiconductor materials. However, limited domestic reserves and technologies for their recovery may cause supply problems. MICA is perhaps our No. 1. strategic mineral problem because of its large requirements in a variety of equipment for use in the military services, and because the principal source of this material has heretofore been British India, a source now threatened partly because of distance and lack of ships. [Block mica and bauxite were added to the "most critical" list published by the W.P.B. on Nov. 6.] No satisfactory substitute has yet been found for most of the uses of mica, which largely involve electrical insulation. Brazil is now our nearest and best major source of this material. No splitting plants have yet been established there but in 1941 we imported about a million pounds of block mica from that country and in 1942 that quantity will be considerably exceeded. In Brazil, mica is found almost exclusively in the pegmatite dikes along the mountain range bordering the eastern part of Minas Gerais. A belt, roughly 180 miles long by 100 miles wide, extends from Theophilo Ottoni to Carangolo. The principal mica-mining districts in this belt are the Governador Valladares area to the north and the Espera Feliz district to the south. The dikes are usually 10 to 50 meters wide and a mile or two long and intrude the old metamorphic schist formation. They are weathered and easily mined.

"In conventional investment casting process of aluminium alloys for the application of the aerospace industry, to assure the quality of the final casting, usually the foundry uses large runner system which results in low yield, high energy consumption and high GHGs emission. In one case of this investigation, the yield is between 5 ~ 10% which means that the current casting process wastes large amount of energy and generates lots of scraps. By applying a new casting method, the bulky runner system and the melting/holding time are significantly reduced, the quality of the casting is improved, and in the meantime the related energy consumption and GHGs emission are significantly decreased. In the investigation, the energy efficiencies and GHGs emission between the current and traditional processes are calculated and compared.1. IntroductionAs one of the conventional casting process, Investment Casting Process (ICP) and its applications can be traced to thousand years ago [l]. In current casting industry, ICP still plays an important role in the production of small and precious castings with high quality requirements in automobile and aerospace industries. Both casting quality and manufacturing costs which mainly consist of energy costs have crucial effects on the competitiveness of castings in the market. In the production of aluminium alloy castings using ICP, the energy cost and energy efficiency of a casting facility depend mainly on the efficiency of its melting and heat treating performance. In association with the two performances, more than 60 % of the total process energy costs are symbolised in a typical casting facility [2]. Additionally, in conventional ICP of aluminium alloys for the application of the aerospace, to assure the quality of the final casting, typically the foundry uses huge runner system including big risers/feeders which cause low yield, creates lots of scraps and generates high energy consumption. Consequently, there are huge opportunities for casting industry to choose the best practices for potential energy saving. Furthermore, the reasons such as the stringent limitation of environmental legislation in Europe and the pressure of the rising energy price force the casting industry to reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gases (GHGs) em1ss10n."

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

"INTRODUCTION Aerosols (5 um have not been shown to be consistently generated and characterized in inhalation chambers. Particle deposition in the lungs however may occur with particles as large as 25 um(1). Therefore, in order to closely simulate the atmosphere of an underground coal mine where the distribution is bimodal, with modes at S and 15 um (2), particles much greater than <1 um must be characterized for uniform mixing and size distribution within these chambers. The Hazelton Animal Exposure Chamber has been chosen because it has been best characterized for smaller particles (<1 um) (3), and is the major type used by most inhalation toxicology institutes such as Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Institute and Battelle Northwest Laboratory.BACKGROUNDPreviously published studies on the inhalation of solid aerosols have attempted to characterize the distrition of particles of <2 um in diameter. There are no published reports of extensive work characterizing either the size distribution of particles <1 um or the concentration throughout the exposure chamber (Table 1).Table 1 shows the variability and sizes of several aerosols <1 um in diameter used in five previous chamber studies.Discussion of Previous StudiesThe study done by Bauermash, Bryan, Dickinson, and Burke (4)stated two major concerns in the development of the 6.5 ft. diameter chamber. The first was that a quantity of animals could be exposed to the same concentration regardless of the location of the animal, and second was that the chamber could be easily cleaned and decontaminated. The solution to the first concern required a circular chamber with the contamination air entering the chamber somewhere along the central axis. The animals could then be changed during exposure time so that each animal was exposed throughout the total volume."

"The smelter slags represented silicate crystalline rock with medium to coarse-grained structure with spinifex skeletal network of olivine in hedenbergite matrix. Accessory magnetite, pyrrhotite and copper sulfides chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, chalcocite and digenite occurred in dissemination in silicate matrix. The sample was studied by optical and electron microscopy with support of quantitative XRD. Modal mineralogical composition included olivine, pyroxene, magnetite, chalcopyrite, quartz, pyrrhotite. Copper deportment showed copper distributed in chalcopyrite (40 %), cuprite (22 %), covellite (21 %), bornite, chalcocite, digenite (5 %), Cu-bearing pyrrhotite (4 %) and spinel (2%). Liberation of copper minerals in the material ground to P80=71 µm was good with over 90 % sulfides in free grains and floatable binaries. The results showed theoretical possibility of 65 % copper recovery by flotation. Conclusion based on mineralogical data was precisely confirmed with flotation tests studies that proved to recover around 60 % of copper to commercial grade concentrate. INTRODUCTION Annual world copper matte smelter slags production is estimated to be millions of tones and contain thousands tones of unrecovered Cu, Zn and significant amounts of Ag and Au. Mineralogical study of one large processing sample of material of historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag was carried out to find possibility to recover copper and define theoretical recovery by flotation. The study of the slag material was aimed to determine possibility of upgrading the material on existing copper flotation plant to develop additional mineral resources. The objectives for mineralogical investigation were to target for best liberation fineness, determine theoretical recovery and possible concentrate quality for sulfide flotation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS Large representative processing sample was collected by mixing of 120 t of slag material representatively excavated from historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag. The sample was used to define the processing technology to recover copper and gold from the material."

"This study gives an insight into non-destructive testing methods suitable for porosity analysis at a small scale, firstly summarizing relevant state-of-the-art technology and pending patents, secondly realizing and documenting the start-up of the VHX-2000 digital microscope by the manufacturer Keyence and thirdly demonstrating practical application with the extended analysis of three fundamentally different agglomerates for which important application-related parameters are determined. Various analysis procedures on the different agglomerates the efficient and timesaving operational features of the digital microscope are outlined. Firstly an analysis of flax fibre agglomerates determines the process conditions best suited to produce agglomerates with specific properties by determining sphericity, cubicity, density and porosity as well as fibre damage and alteration. Secondly the production of iron-hydroxide - hemp-fibre agglomerates serves to obtain information on porosity values as a result of a cauterization of the fibres. The third analysis provides estimations of porosity values for acid-treated lignin agglomerates. Measurements were carried out with compact dry agglomerates and with soaked, expanded agglomerates, determining factors for total water carrying capacity. Practicability of non-destructive testing by digital microscopy is demonstrated and explained concerning the applications in this study by obtaining definite structural findings about the analysed agglomerates. Information on its operation is made available by a practice-oriented manual for the VHX-2000 digital microscope. Further suggestions for more in-detail analysis results with different instruments are given."

Since its discovery in February 2014, the Arrow Uranium Deposit has undergone rapid development through aggressive and systematic drilling programs and is now being progressed through advanced engineering and permitting. Based on the 2018 NI 43-101 Technical Report, the Probable Mineral Reserve estimate totals 234.1 million (“M”) pounds (“lbs”) triuranium octoxide (“U3O8”), contained in 3.43 M tonnes at an average grade of 3.09% U3O8. The proposed processing plant at the Rook I Project (the “Project”) will be capable of producing up to 31 M lbs of U3O8 per year, with a projected mine life of nine years based on the Probable Mineral Reserve estimate, although NexGen is permitting a 24-year operating life at the Project assuming the majority of Inferred Mineral Resources are upgraded to Indicated Mineral Resources with continued mineral resource development drilling. The Project will be developed through transverse and longitudinal longhole mining methods, pairing primary and secondary stoping techniques with a high degree of equipment mechanization which will provide a combination of good productivity, high extraction, and stable back support. This next generation of uranium operations combines the use of advanced tele-remote equipment and instrumentation with a low-cost bulk mining method and a best-in-class tailings management practice, effectively reducing operating costs and setting a new standard for elite environmental and social practices.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews the first 2 years of the agency&apos;s progress in implementing total quality management (TQM), which the agency refers to as Quality Improvement (QI). All employees have been trained in basic TQM concepts, a cadre of facilitators has been selected and trained, and 13 Bureauwide teams are addressing specific issues that were identified by Bureau employees nationwide as problem areas. Also in place are a Quality Council composed of the Bureau&apos;s top executives, a Quality Management Board, and eight QI Working Groups to provide a national 01 infrastructure. There are also Quality Steering Groups at each Bureau location nationwide to address local concerns. In addition to the narrative text, the texts of salient memoranda and other documents are included as appendixes.
