This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

"Although lead, zinc, copper, and iron sulphides have been known for many years in the Bathurst region, the existence of large massive deposits was not known until the discovery of the Brunswick orebody in 1952. This was followed by the discoveries of the Anacon orebody in 1953 and the American Metals orebodies in 1954. There is no question as to the great importance of these large massive sulphide deposits, and no doubt that other sulphide deposits are to be found. The problem, of course, is where and how to find them.The discovery of the Brunswick and Anacon orebodies is attributed to geophysical work. The original discovery of the American Metals deposit is generally attributed to a regional airborne electromagnetic survey.It is generally stated that the Bathurst area is a geophysical camp, and this is essentially true, but in this highly competitive search for orebodies it is obviously impossible for an individual company to cover the entire area by a comprehensive geophysical survey. Some means other than geophysics must be used to narrow the target. The quickest, cheapest, and simplest method is geological investigations.It has been stated that nothing can be accomplished by geology in the Bathurst region, since the camp is largely covered with overburden. This is true only insofar as detailed work on certain properties is concerned. It is not true of the larger regional picture. Outcrops are scarce, but angular float is abundant, and precedent shows that angular float has moved but a short distance from its source.GeologyAeromagnetic maps published by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys are the best guides to the geology and structure of the area. These maps supply factual information concerning the underlying rocks. When coupled with field investigations, they are very useful in the interpretation of regional geology and the selection of favourable areas. The discussion of the geology is accordingly centred upon the aeromagnetic maps. The following is essentially a working theory, based on geological facts as best reconciled with all other available information,"

"Induced hydraulic fracture of strata during roof bolt installation is a potentially prevalent, but masked phenomenon within the underground coal industry. Previously reported resin testing programs (McTyer et al., 2014) examined the relationship between resin mixing effectiveness and varying bore hole diameter. The methodology employed within this earlier test program facilitated a further critical area of research – the measurement of back pressures generated within the bore hole during standard rock bolt installation practices. Experimental data has indicated that fluid resin can be pressurised to levels where it exceeds the compressive strength of the strata, inducing hydraulic fracture within the immediate area of the bolting horizon. The routine cycle of roof bolting serves to propagate this effect, progressively fracturing and delaminating the roof during mine advancement. This masked phenomenon can lead to a perception of difficult ground conditions - mining efficiencies and costs are therefore affected, with increased needs for additional support subsequently required to restabilise the inadvertently damaged roof.Further analysis of the parameters associated with resin bolt installation has now been conducted, assisting in the development of an empirical relationship between bore hole pressure, bore hole diameter and bolt insertion times. This relationship has been analysed for 15:1 ratio resins and 2:1 ratioresins, within 28mm and 30mm boreholes. Further to this, load transfer performance has been comparatively assessed for both 28mm and 30mm boreholes, suggesting that for 2:1 resins, acceptable resin mixing and load transfer can be obtained within a 30mm bore hole. The combination of 2:1 resins, utilised within a 30mm bore hole, may well provide the optimal solution to reduce the risk of hydraulic fracture in weaker strata during resin bolt installation.INTRODUCTIONA growing number of industry papers have previously investigated areas of concern associated with the performance of cartridge style resins in roof bolting, predominantly focussing on the effects of plastic film gloving, inadequate resin mixing and the pressurisation of resin within the bore hole. These three effects have a critical influence on the load transfer of the steel bolt element, through the cured resin and into the surrounding strata.Gloving occurs due to the plastic film of the resin cartridge partially encasing or wrapping around the steel roof bolt element – a known phenomenon over many years (Pettibone, 1987). The plastic film creates regions of discontinuity between the bolt, cured resin and borehole, reducing effective load transfer into the strata. Experimentation conducted into the effects of bolt ends fully encased by plastic film (Pastars and MacGregor, 2005) revealed that load transfer can be reduced by 85 to 90% in worstcase occurrences. It is also known that the aggregate filler size used within the resin can assist in shredding and breaking up the plastic film – this effect was observed in a previous study on resin mixing effectiveness (McTyer et al., 2014)."

"Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Graduate winnersKaustubh Shrimali won first place for researching “The influence of starch in amine adsorption by quartz in the reverse flotation of iron ore.” Venkata Atluri received second for studying “The effect of polysaccharides on bubble attachment at talc surfaces.” Jennifer Galvin placed third for investigating “A novel approach to alkali pug bake for the extraction of rare earth elements from monazite concentrate.” In the fourth through seventh places were Amy Richins, Sumedh Gostu, Brett Carlson and Chris Vass.Undergraduate winnersNestor Santa earned first place for exploring “Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards.” Cassidy O’Connell received second place for conducting “Performance analysis of CMC in high talc copper sulfide flotation systems.” Catalina Vanegas won third place for examining “Cyanidation tests and pretreatments to recover gold from a refractory ore in Colombia.” Kylie Boyce, Michael Archambo and Pritam Sinha were in the fourth through sixth places.Everyone benefits from attending the student poster competition. The students are able to display their work to future employers, and industry professionals can talk to up-and-coming engineers. Sanitary land filling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Knowledge of ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for natural limitations at a particular site. Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites; (2) site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources; (3) research on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills; and (4) formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers. Throughout history, man has disposed of unwanted materials by dumping. As urbanization has increased, haphazard dumping practices have given way to disposal under more controlled conditions because of increasing congestion of population and production of waste and greater concern for public health and environmental amenities. Many states and communities have already outlawed open dumping and open burning of refuse. The only practical methods of disposal of large volumes of refuse, therefore, are contained, high-temperature incineration, or burial in a sanitary landfill. In Illinois, regulation of solid waste disposal has been delegated to the Environmental Protection Agency. Each session of the legislature since 1965 has passed increasingly strict laws regulating waste diposal. As a result, the work of evaluating sanitary landfill sites has increased significantly for both the Department of Public Health, now the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois State Geological Survey, which advises the Agency on matters of ground-water geology and pollution. In fact, our ground-water staff spends as much time on studies relating to waste disposal, primarily sanitary landfills, as on ground-water resource studies. Many other geological agencies are experiencing similar demands for increased assistance in solving waste-disposal problems. This paper summarizes some of the salient features of the sanitary landfill concept, describes activities of the Illinois Geological Survey in ground-water and engineering geology relating to landfills, and suggests policies that need consideration. A sanitary landfill is located and operated in such a way that vermin and pests, nuisances, and degradation of air and water are kept at acceptable levels. Some of the physical requirements of a sanitary landfill are all-weather roads for year-round access, fences to retain blowing paper, a daily cover of at least six inches of suitable earth material, and a final cover of at least 2 ft of earth material. Dumping into or adjacent to standing water generally is not allowed. Two common operating techniques are used. In the first, trenches are dug, the refuse is placed in them, and the earth removed from the trenches is used to cover the waste. In the second method, area fill, refuse is placed in low ground and covered with earth from adjacent high areas. The hydrology of the site is a prime consideration in locating sanitary landfills. Putrescible refuse, if saturated above field capacity, produces a leachate that usually has a high concentration of dissolved solids.2 As the leachate also acts as an agent for transporting bacterial pollutants, it constitutes a potential pollution hazard. To reduce the production of leachates, the topography of the landfill area should be such that surface water will not flow into or through the fill. Operations that will result in refuse disposal below or near the highest known water-table elevation may be required to take corrective or preventive measures to protect the ground water. In practice, under humid conditions such as prevail in Illinois, locations where disposal can take place above the water table are relatively few because surficial materials are commonly fine-grained, which permits slow gravity drainage and results in high degrees of saturation (100% moisture content) near the surface. At some sites, although disposal has taken place above the water table, ground-water mounds have developed, resulting in permanent saturation of the refuse. LIKE nearly everything else, mining geology has been reconverting. Many geologists had been in military and other government service. Many more, with mining companies, had been working primarily toward increasing production from known reserves. All of these are turning now toward their normal peacetime endeavor-the search for new ore; for most mining companies, finding themselves with accumulated deficits in development work, are more than ready to go ahead with their postwar plans made a year or more ago but still stalled at the close of 1945 for lack of man power. These plans include not merely development in the old home camp but also wide exploration for new prospects both domestic and foreign. Most of the large concerns have geologists and engineers in the field in the United States, despite the outlook for higher mining costs here, and at least half a dozen strong American companies are already investigating opportunities abroad, notwithstanding past unhappy experiences in certain Latin-American nations which have welcomed capital but later found means of preventing investors from reaping the reward of their enterprise. A few of these new foreign expeditions are following well-planned programs, but too many, in their haste to get any sort of footing, are proceeding without well-considered policy. with the result that their geologists can do little more than desultory scouting.

Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. In general, all of the selected mines exercised good dust control practices by maintaining water sprays, scrubber airflows, proper curtain setback distances and providing sufficient airflow to the active faces. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 12.2 m (40 ft) of advance, because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation), as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

Large tonnages of the magnesium silicate mineral , olivine, are known to exist in the mountains of western North Carolina and in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The North Carolina deposits alone are reputed to contain at least 230 million tons of ore averaging 45 to 49 percent of magnesium oxide In both areas the mineral is readily accessible and can be mined by the simplest methods ; one of the largest of the Washington deposits is located at tidewater .

The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

Orano Mining maintains a significant level of Innovation and Development Research for its sites in Canada, Niger, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and France. This effort is formalized within the six major thematic programs below, which include more than one hundred affiliated R&D projects:  Geological understanding, tools and methods for exploration  ISR technology (geology, modeling, mining development tools)  Mining technology (SABRE)  Ore treatment and processing (in particular via our Centre for Innovation for extractive metallurgy, CIME)  Environment (radiochemistry, modeling, tools and methods for remediation)  Digital Mine (sensors, transmission, database, and data modeling) This paper describes the main actions of these six programs, their stakes, and their progress. There is no single path leading to innovation but fostering an innovative context and a structured project approach are essential ingredients to successful development and industrial deployment. As a result, Orano Mining has, over the years, developed a disciplined methodology for R&D portfolio and project management. This methodology, presented here, targets a reduction in time to implementation while valuing both the expertise and the work in project mode.

Calls for transformation in the mining sector are legislated. Whilst the composition of boards in terms of gender diversity and equal representation has improved, little is known on how women directors experience boardrooms. This research investigated the experiences of South African women in male-dominated mining boards. It questions why women remain marginalised in boardrooms, even when they are qualified as the men in their respective fields. The experiences of South African women on male-dominated mining boards were investigated by means of a multiple case study using a qualitative research methodology. Interviews were conducted with 16 women and 12 men serving across six JSE-listed South African mining companies. The findings show that irrespective of their qualification and experience, women,s, contributions are often ignored, and they are assigned to more social roles. Regardless of race, all women experienced gender stereotyping. Strategies are required to ensure that board cultures embrace female talent, where women can effectively contribute to decision-making and maximize their talent. It is argued that gender and identity should be studied in relation to post-colonial history in African countries. Women have multiple, varying identities, and their experiences require a unique investigation that would enable strategies to overcome barriers, through the implementation of an appropriate diversity management programme.

"Mining in multi-seam workings has been undertaken for many years in the VK Remnant pillars above and/or below current working areas have an important influence on retreat gateroad conditions at five of the remaining six deep coal mines. These interaction effects need lo be predicted ahead of mining so that longwall panels can be positioned to minimize roadway damage and to identify areas where additional support should be installed early into competent strata when and where it is most effective.Currently, three-dimensional elastic stress analysis using MAP3D is undertaken to predict local vertical and horizontal stress magnitudes during gateroad development and in front of the face on retreat. The predicted stress fields are often used as input to FLAC for roadway modelling.Using Maltby Colliery in South Yorkshire as a case study, this paper illustrates the MAP3D approach, together with its current limitations and uncertainties. Possible future improvements in the analysis method are proposed and the authors would welcome comments on these, or suggestions for alternative approaches.MODELLING OF MULTl-SEAM LAYOUT & MULTI-SEAM INTERACTIONThe remaining large coal mines in the UK arc operating at depths of 800-1, 150 m (2,625-3,773 ft). Production panels are now mined on retreat after the accompanying single entry access roadways have been completed. These gateroads are typically supported with a system of steel rock bolts and cable in the roof and steel bolts and glass re in forced polymer (G RP) dowels in the sidewalls.In addition to new panels being mined in the vicinity of old goafed districts, a significant amount of extraction has usually already taken place in coal seams above and/or below the current working areas. This means that there is also interaction between the current workings and the remnants of the old workings in other seams. As a consequence of the mining methods employed, old workings can have a complex geometry compri ing collapsed and partially collapsed excavations intersper ed with small and large pillars of unmined coal. The unmined coal pillar act as stress concentrators that carry the overburden load while the mined out excavations create stress shadows of varying degrees depending on how much collap e and reconsolidat ion has occurred. This is illustrated by a simple elastic model as shown in Figure I."

THIS review of the progress made in iron and steel metallurgy during the past year is confined to developments in this country. It attempts to give examples to illustrate progress made rather than to appraise results. As a result of the gradually diminishing supply of rich iron ores and of predictions made as to the probable life of the iron-ore reserves of the Lake Superior District, attention of iron and steel executives was directed to the question of beneficiation of iron ores. Laboratory and plant-scale experimental work was conducted on the wash ores .of Minnesota and an investigation, was, begun on the Old Range low-grade ores.

"Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. The effect of reducing temperature, H2/CO mole ratio, and reduction gas flow rate on the metallization rate of oxide pellets were investigated at laboratory scale, with ludwigite iron concentrate used as raw materials. The reducing temperature varied from 850 to 950 °C, the H2/CO mole ratio changed from 1.5 to 4.5, the range of reduction gas flow rate was from 2 to 5 L/min. The results indicate that the metallization degree of pellets increase with increase of the temperature, H2/CO mole ratio, and gas flow rate. However, after temperature rises to 850 °C, metallization degree increases slowly. The effect of H2/CO on the metallization degree is not very obviously with the ratio of H2/CO increasing from 1.5 to 4.5. When the gas flow rate was increased from 2 to 3 L/min, the metallization degree increased greatly from 72.2 to 92.1%. In the flow range from 3 to 5 L/min, the metallization degree was increased slowly. The results obtained could be useful for comprehensive utilization of ludwigite iron concentrate by gas-based direct reduction method.

In the past various systems have been used to plan the extraction of ore from block cave operations. These systems have varied from rather sophisticated models with empirical ægravity flowÆ rules applied to the very rudimentary models where only the recorded mined tonnageÆs have been accounted for against the available resource. The normal requirement of these models has been to only plan the movement of ground through the drawpoints. Little cognisance has been taken of the other parameters that affect the total mining operations. The intended purpose of the linear program planning system is to not only include the management, resource availability and geotechnical constraints, but to also include the mining rules. The paper will discuss the various constraints that have been considered, and attempt to illustrate where the system better serves the production system than previous ones. A brief technical discussion on the linear programming system is included.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was made to determine the possibilities of using Florida beach-sand concentrator wastes in ceramic products. Sands used in the investigation originated in the Trail Ridge area of Florida, where continued operation of processing plants for recovering titanium minerals promises a dependable source of raw materials. Three general classes of ceramic products were studied, namely: (1) Structural, (2) refractory, and (3) electric-furnace slags.
