Uranium Recovery Corporation was incorporated in the State of Florida in 1968 for the sole purpose of developing a method to economically recover uranium from Florida phosphoric acid. The preliminary laboratory work culminated in the demonstration of the process to United Nuclear Corporation in the spring of 1971. This was quickly followed by a pilot plant program to identify any unusual problems such as those arising from the day-to-day variation which occurs in a fertilizer phosphoric acid plant production system. After two years of pilot plant operation, United Nuclear Corporation purchased controlling interest in Uranium Recovery Corporation and committed several million dollars to the design and construction of the first commercial plant for this purpose in the State of Florida, or anywhere else in the United States, for that matter. After many start-up problems were resolved at the production plant located at the W. R. Grace fertilizer complex near Bartow, sustained production began March, 1971, and has continued to date. We still have some problems to solve but are currently producing sufficient uranium to make shipments to the UF6 converters for preparation of Florida uranium for use in nuclear power plant fuel materials.

THE concentration of tin in the tailing from Sullivan ore has been de-scribed by H. R. Banks, superintendent of the Sullivan concentrator, in a paper presented at the annual meeting of the B.C. Division of the Institute in October, 1941(1). The reduction of the concentrate EARLY EXPERIMENTAL WORK Experimental work on the smelting of Sullivan tin concentrate was done in Trail. Preliminary tests in the laboratory indicated that the concentrate could be successfully treated in an electric furnace. A small electro-thermic pilot plant was built and, at the same time, reduction tests were made in an oil-fired reverberatory furnace. Both types of treatment gave satisfactory results. It developed that no fluxes, other than those already in the ore and in the ash of the reducing agent (either coke or coal), were needed. By using an excess of iron, a complete recovery of the tin in the slag was obtained, but with 20 to 30 per cent iron in the tin. A counter-current treatment was thus indicated, viz., the primary slag was first treated with hard-head (iron-tin alloy) from the refining and final slag smelting, producing tin with 2 to 4 per cent Fe. This secondary slag was subsequently treated with scrap iron to produce tin-iron alloy, and a final slag low enough in tin to waste. By following this line of endeavour, a tentative flow-sheet was drawn up and a successful operation was established. Without resorting to electrolytic refining, a metal comparable in purity to standard tin was produced. Metallurgical results and operating costs were found to be very similar with an electric furnace or a fuel-fired furnace. 'However, electric furnace smelting was chosen because the furnace required was smaller, and because some doubt existed as to the cleaning of the final slag in the reverberatory furnace reduction.

"Rock fall related accidents continue to occur in coal mines, although artificial support mechanisms have been used extensively [1]. Roof stability is primarily determined in many underground mines by a limited number of methods that often resort to subjective criteria. It is argued in this paper that stability conditions of mine roof strata, as a key factor in coal mines, must be determined by a survey which proactively investigates fundamental aspects.Failure of rock around the opening happens as a result of both high rock stress conditions and the presence of structural discontinuities. The properties of such discontinuities affect the engineering behavior of rock masses causing wedges or blocks to fall from the roof or slide out of the walls [2]. A practical rule based approach to assess the risk of a roof fall is proposed in the paper. The method is based on the analysis of structural data and the geometry and stability of wedges in underground coal mines. In this regard, an accident causing a huge collapse in a coal mine leading to four fatalities is illustrated by way of a case study. A comprehensive investigation of the hanging wall has been gathered through a systematic collection of evidence. The investigation results are then analyzed, and an interpretation of the evidence gathered is provided.For this purpose, horizontal and vertical profiles are prepared by geophysical methods to define the falling zone and its boundaries. The collapse is then modeled by the use of sophisticated computer programs in order to identify the causes of the accident and hence recommend corrective actions to prevent or minimize reoccurrence probability of similar accidents. The corrective measures are placed into a rule-based framework for the benefit of the mine operators.INTRODUCTIONRoof rock failure has generally been the most dangerous hazard for underground coal mining in the world. Failure of rock around shallow coal mine openings often results from loosening of blocks of rock on the weakened planes under the influence of gravity. This condition is not typically seen in large deep coal mines. There are a number of differences between large mechanized mines and small mines related to ground control [3]."

"The mathematical model of the globular eutectic solidification in 2D was designed. The proposed model is based on the Cellular Automaton Finite Differences (CA-FD) calculation method. The model has been used for studies of the primary austenite and of globular eutectic grains growth during the ductile iron solidification in the thin wall casting. The model mentioned above takes into account, among other things, non-uniform temperature distribution in the casting wall cross-section, kinetics of the austenite and graphite grains nucleation, solute diffusion and non-equilibrium nature of the interphase boundary migration.Some aspects of stochastic nature of the solidification processes are taken into account. The results of the CA solidification modeling have been shown, that differences between cooling curves obtained in the same conditions of the casting solidification may be a result of the stochastic nature of the grain nucleation.The results of modeling were compared with the experimental microstructure. The model is well worked for thin walled ductile iron casting, for fast solidification process.IntroductionNodular graphite cast iron, also known as ductile iron (DI), has major applications in critical engineering parts due to its mechanical properties and castability. The mechanical and physical properties of this material depend on the shape and number of the graphite grains andmicrostructure of the metallic matrix.Solidification of DI was a subject of many computer modeling programs described in literature [ 1-5], in which the stationary conditions of carbon diffusion in austenite is pre-assumed. Recently, a tendency for production of thin-walled castings has been observed [ 6-8]. In this technology, the process of the fast solidification may be very far from equilibrium and steadystate conditions [9].The purpose of the present work is a two-dimension model development for simulation of the DI structure formation during the solidification in the condition of non steady-state temperature and diffusion fields in the thin-wall casting.Model of process The CA-FD is one of the known methods of the simulation ofmicrostructure formation during the solidification [ 10, 11]. In the CA microstructure modeling the outer grain shape is the result of the simulation and does not superimposed beforehand. The model development for a onephase microstructure evolution is a subject of the numerous researches [12 -23]. Model of the eutectic solidification of DI in the uniform temperature field and superimposed cooling rate is known [24]."

The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

In New Brunswick, significant potash deposits are intimately associated with rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group. To date, two deposits high in sylvinite, up to 20 m thick, have been confirmed at depths between 490 and 1,035 m below surface near Plumweseep and Salt Springs. These areas are currently under development by the Potash Company of America and the Denison-Potacan Potash Company respectively. A third area, near Lower Millstream, is also known to contain potash-bearing evaporites and is now being explored by BP Exploration Canada Ltd. All three areas are situated in the western half of the Moncion Subbasin and are within 25 km of Sussex. Numerous similarities in stratigraphy, thickness, mineralogy and structure suggest that deposition of evaporites throughout much of southern New Brunswick was contemporaneous and extended over a considerable area. This paper introduces common detrimental consequences to the environment from mining in the Beijing West Mining Area. For example, ongoing mining operations can cause the following environmental deterioration: rock burst, roof rises, roof falls and inrush (Pit dash for ward water). Post-closure, after minerals resources are exhausted, the following environmental issues may remain: landslides (collapse, and mud-rock flow), dropping or exhausted water tables, water pollution, desertification and soil erosion, water accumulation, Slay endanger, ground subsidence, and causal factors in seismic activity. This paper analyzes this wide range of environmental consequences of mining, and offers a theoretical foundation to underpin a corresponding management scheme.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can be considered as the method of choice for tunneling in many projects due to the high level of efficiency and high potential productivity, safety, and applicability in a variety of subsurface conditions. The muck transportation system in a TBM tunneling operation plays a significant role in the process and impacts the overall performance of the machine. This paper introduces a recently developed method of simulating TBM operation through discrete event simulation (DES), which allows for tracking of the various activities, incurred downtimes in the operations, and overall machine utilization. The study presented here compares two different muck transportation systems, conveyor and rail, under similar geological conditions to quantify the impacts of the choice of muck transportation systems on machine utilization. The results show the applicability and extent of redundancy in the use of the two systems relative to machine capabilities and their sensitivity to geological conditions.

THE ORDINARY well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult, to secure .definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller; has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. GENERAL TERMS Hard and Soft.-Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This' is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

"The static shear stiffness of an immersion joint subjected to combined compression and shear forces is investigated by experiments in a test set-up. To explore the performance of the immersion joint, the compression-shear loads, which are applied on a specimen according to test protocol, are determined based on real design situation. In this test, the main focus is on the steel shear keys and the rubber sealing. For the applied loading schemes, different levels of axial force, corresponding to the water depth of the joint, are considered as well as the changing amplitudes of the shear force. The force-displacement curve is obtained and the hysteresis is observed during the whole test. The joint‘s static shear stiffness is calculated, showing to increase linearly with respect to the magnitude of the axial force. Moreover, it is found that the rubber sealing has a significant influence on the shear behavior of the joint. INTRODUCTION An immersion joint is the connecting part between two adjacent elements of an immersed tunnel. Compared to that of the bulk elements, the stiffness of the immersion joint is relatively small. When it is subjected to shear actions, whether resulting from vertical foundation settlement or horizontal earthquake movements, shear-resistance of the joint is the main concern for a safe and reliable water-proof design. A flexible immersion joint, which normally consists of a rubber seal and shear keys installed at an element end is a common solution in practice. The way in which the shear keys and the rubber seal behave in the joint together is of vital importance to a comprehensive understanding of the shear behavior of the joint. However, in literature very few experiments on the shear behavior of immersed joints are available although the flexible joints are applied in practice for more than 50 years already. O. Kiyomiya (2004) carried out both a 3-dimensional experiment and a finite element analysis for a new type of flexible joint referred to as the Crown Seal. The results indicated that this new type of joint can be applied in practice because of the effective reduction of lateral deformation. A linear model was found in the paper of Anastasopoulos et al. (2007) to describe the behavior of the shear keys, which consider that the stiffness of the shear keys tends to infinity. R.S. van Oorsouw (2008) discussed the shear capacity of concrete shear keys in segmental joints, by analyzing the influences of reinforcement and friction force between shear keys."

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. Flash reduction of zinc oxides is an alternative, environmentally safe method to leaching and electrowinning for zinc recovery. Zinc and lead are volatilized in a flash reactor, a non-hazardous residue is generated, and the fuel source is inexpensive coal in the flash reduction process. Results from experimental laboratory tests yielded low zinc recovery for this process. Mineralogical and textural characterization of the residues from the flash reduction tests for different feed materials and temperatures were conducted to determine the cause for the low zinc recovery. Reflected light microscopy, cathodoluminescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were utilized in this applied mineralogical research. The original zinc calcine is composed primarily of fine-grained, iron-bearing zincite particles, 25-40 um in diameter, in a porous texture. Pellets processed at 1150°C were found to produce reaction rims of franklinite-magnetite-jacobsite solid solution that are 125-200 um thick and surround cores of unreacted iron-bearing zincite in a Zn-Fe-Si-Ca glass matrix. The reaction rims have subsequently oxidized to form an outer 10 ~m thick rim of hematite. Slags from calcines processed at 1275°C are primarily triangular particles with porous centers, cenospheres, and spheres of iron-bearing zincite, in addition to rectangular particles composed of non-porous franklinite-magnetite solid solution cores with iron-bearing zincite rims. Slag particles from calcine processed at 1200°C are predominantly 100-250 ~m triangular-shaped, spheres, and cenospheres containing fine-grained franklinite and franklinite-magnetite solid solution in an iron-bearing zincite matrix. Slag from calcine processed at 1300°C are also predominantly 1 00-250 um triangular-shaped, spheres, and cenospheres but contain coarser-grained iron-bearing zincite. The zincite in the penets and the slags typically contain 10-20% iron. Based upon these mineralogical observations, it is concluded that the significant amounts of iron in the zincite prevent volatilization of the zinc in the flash reduction process.

"INTRODUCTION For a long time now automation has been state of the art in production engineering and chemical engineering. The advantages of automation are, for instance, higher reliabilities of production processes, higher product qualities as well as capacities and improved safety conditions for the personnel. In contrast, many operations in mining are still conducted manually by machine operators instead of autonomous control units. One example for this is the excavation of underground hard coal which is still executed with aid of human perception. The Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) has been working on possibilities for sensor-based automation of mining machinery for many years now. Thereto the focus is set on the implementation of common material analysis techniques into ruggedized conditions as a basis for automation. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for instance is an atom emission technique which enables the determination of the elemental composition of a sample. After introducing LIBS this paper will give an overview on dust formation during the cutting process. With the illustration of a few examples the challenges in determining dust concentrations specifically such of cutting processes are explained in further detail. The final chapter will outlay the possibilities and challenges in utilizing cutting-induced dust for the automation of shearer loaders. LASER-INDUCED BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY LIBS Fundamentals LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) is a contact-free method for analyzing materials in any state of aggregate. It pertains the atom emission techniques and is based on the generation of plasma, inducing avalanche ionization on the surface of a solid material or any spot in a gas or aqueous solution. With sufficient background information on the expected elements and an additional calibration, this method can determine all present elements not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. However, this method cannot be utilized for determining the molecular composition of materials – if this feature is required a complementary method such as Raman analysis needs to be added. (1, 2)"

Discussion of Mr. Baker's paper, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. MR. T. F. WITHERBEE, Durango, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) : Mr. Baker's paper is very instructive in that it shows how furnace-derangements sometimes originate from apparently slight causes. In 1896 a similar burning through of the lining occurred at the Mayville furnace of the Northwestern Iron Co., Mayville, Wis., in exactly 38 days from the time the furnace was blown in. At that time I attributed it to the fact that the bell was carried several inches to the front side of the furnace, the length of the versed side of the arc described by the lever, thus dumping a little more of the charge on the back side, which made the front side of the furnace-charge more open and consequently increased the circulation of the furnace gases through it. After reading Mr. Baker's description, I believe that possibly a little more ore was charged on the back side of the hopper, due to the fact that it was nearest to the elevator. This unequal charging, however, was unconsciously done, as the fillers were both honest and faithful. The illustration of the burned lining of Furnace No. 1, given in Fig. - of Mr. Baker's paper answers very well for the Mayville furnace. It shows that in both cases the destruction of the lining was largely due to faulty construction, in that there were no cooling-plates in the angle of the bosh and in one or two courses of brick above it, where I believe they are-more in demand than anywhere else in the furnace. The presence of these cooling-plates at the angle of the bosh would have obliged the current of the hot gases to turn the corner and would have prevented them from following the angle of the bosh com¬pletely through the lining and shell.

Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

"Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing may arise from natural carbonaceous materials in the ore. Several mechanisms have been proposed in the past decades including a physical sorption process by the carbonaceous matter, or via the reduction of aurocyanide at the mineral surface (Abotsi & Osseoasare, 1986; Afenya, Osseoasare, & Abotsi, 1983; Tan, Feng, Lukey, & Van Deventer, 2005). Nevertheless, the mechanisms of preg-robbing remain poorly understood. Understanding the nature of the preg-robber is of practical importance for the selection of a suitable treatment process. Fine carbon particles in the ore have been recognized as preg-robbers due to their similarity to the activated carbon used in the carbon in leach (CIL) or carbon in pulp (CIP) processes. Previous research has illustrated that the activated carbon (also referred to as amorphous carbon in some literature) has a much higher absorption ability than pure graphite with high crystallinity (Adams & Burger, 1998). Adams et al (Adams, Swaney, Friedl & Wagner 1996) concluded that carbonaceous matter is largely responsible for the overall preg-robbing capacity of a given ore. However, the mechanism of carbon preg-robbing was still not clear mostly due to the complexity of amorphous carbon and its behavior in different solution matrices, and at different pH and temperature (Adams, 1990, 1993)."
