An equation is derived for calculating approximately the solubility of nitrogen in an alloy steel over a temperature range from 1200" to 1900°C using data on the effects of alloys on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in iron at 1600°C. Calculated values are compared with experimental data. STUDIES involving the solubility of nitrogen in complex iron alloys have been aided by a system devised by Lanenberg for calculating the solubility of nitrogen in ternary and higher alloys of iron at 1600C using available data on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in binary alloys. Calculated nitrogen solubilities agree well with experimental determinations on complex alloys,' and the calculation procedure is useful when experimental data on specific alloys are not required. A method for extending calculations of nitrogen solubilities in alloy steels to temperatures other than 1600°C would be useful because of the paucity of experimental data in this area. Assumptions which must be made to permit this calculation introduce an element of approximation; however, the calculation is useful in cases where a large number of alloys and temperatures are under consideration, and the precision of experimental measurements is not required. The activity coefficient can be freed from the isothermal restriction of Langenberg's calculation if it is assumed that the solution is "regular". This is a reasonably good assumption for solutions of nitrogen in iron alloys, because usually they are dilute and the heat of solution is relatively small. The presence of large amounts of certain alloying elements would make this assumption less tenable.3 One of the properties of a regular solution is: when "f" is the activity coefficient of a solute and "T" is the temperature in OK. If the activity coefficients at temperatures T and T2 are denoted by subscripts 1 and 2 respectively: The activity coefficient of nitrogen in a complex alloy then can be calculated at any temperature from the sum of the effects of the other solutes on the activity coefficient of nitrogen at 1600°C. It will be convenient to incorporate this expression into an equation which will give directly the logarithm of the solubility of nitrogen at any temperature in the presence of alloys. Two constants, the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron at 1600 "C and the partial molar heat of solution of nitrogen in iron are required. The heat of solution value of 1400 cal at 1600 °C quoted by Kubaschewski and vans will be used. The accuracy of the calculation will suffer if the heat of solution should change materially with temperature. "Fractures with diverse features dominate the hydraulic behavior of fractured rocks and are one of the major subjects for hydrogeological characterization of a site. This study investigates curve patterns obtained by packed tests, and as well the influence of fracture features based on 59 sets of in situ packer tests with different fracture combinations and fracture features. The result shows that, in the example of Heshe site, neat and tidy fractures usually provide stable channel for water flow during testing, and the hydraulic properties of fractures infilled with breccia and mud may change during testing because of leaching and/or washed out of infilling breccia and mud. Different combinations of fractures with diverse features in packed test sections lead to different curve patterns for in situ hydrogeological tests. For groundwater flowing predominately through neat and tidy fractures, the pressure-discharge curve of modified Lugeon tests are usually linear curve pattern, and the pressure decrease while the discharge increase in pressure-discharge-time curves of single-hole double packer tests, which benefit statistically determining the transmissivity of dominant fracture sets. INTRODUCTIONFractures interlaced in rock masses are major channels for groundwater flow and generally account for the anisotropic and heterogeneous characteristics of permeability for fracture rocks. To describe reasonably the permeability of a fracture rock, the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) approach and others with similar ideals have been developed. Many methodologies and associate equipment, for instance, the televiewer and the in situ hydrogeological test, have been proposed to investigate the spatial distribution and the transmissivity for different fracture sets, which are two main parameters necessary for the DFN or similar model simulation (Pearson & Money, 1977; Barker & Black, 1983; Hsieh et al., 1985; Bernard et al., 2006; Quinn et al., 2012). However, diverse outlooks for the pressure-discharge curves and the temporal pressure and associate temporal discharge curves often confuse the investigation results by significant deviations on derived permeability (Houlsby, 1976; Zlotnik, 1994; Royle, 2009; Camilo, 2010).Aiming on technical development for in situ hydrogeological tests and fracture investigation, an experimental well site with 10 wells has been established in Heshe in central Taiwan since 2011 (Wang et al., 2011; Song, 2012; Zhan et al., 2013). Extensive geological survey and well-hole scanning by a televiewer provide spatial distributions and outlooks of fractures in detail. Additionally, a series of Lugeon tests, double packer injection tests and pumping tests have been performed to investigate the permeability of fracture rocks, and dominate fracture sets as well. Based on the results obtained from the Heshe site, this study classifies the curve patterns of hydraulic packer tests. The features of fractures involved in packed sections for packer tests are then inspected in detail. Relationship between the curve patterns of hydraulic packer tests and associated features of corresponding fractures in rock are discussed and addressed accordingly."

"The results of a two—year research study into the relationship between quartz dust levels in host material and in respirable dust in continuous mining sections are presented in this paper. The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. The sample analysis procedures for quartz determination, the ¬analysis results and conclusions of the study are discussed.The results of the study indicate that the quartz contents of the airborne dusts are generally higher than those in the host material and bulk samples; and the quartz content increases with decreasing size of the airborne dust. The source for quartz appears to be the roof and the floor materials rather than the coal seam itself. It also appears that the material containing quartz may be breaking into a different size distribution than coal.INTRODUCTION Without doubt, the potential for permanent and severe health damage exists due to respirable dust in the work environment. The attention directed at the reduction of respirable airborne dust to levels below those specified in the law and the achievements to date in meeting these standards are but a reflection of the recognition by many parties government, industry, and labor - of this potential and the need to reduce it.The ambient dust standard in underground U.S. coal mines (2 mg/s3) has a qualifier (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 71.101) to determine an applicable dust standard when a respirable dust sample contains more than 5% quartz. This standard is frequently referred to as the ""reduced standard."" The reasoning behind the reduced standard is the relative toxicity of the quartz dust compared to that of pure coal dust. As the quartz levels in samples increase, the applicable standards become more stringent and maintaining the workings in compliance becomes increasingly difficult.The number of underground work locations operating under the reduced standards has shown a dramatic increase since 1980 (Figure 1). For comparison purposes, there were no mining entities operating on reduced standards prior to 1977. The emergence of this problem, which affects the health and safety standards on one hand and creates severe compliance problems on the other, has been rapid."

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. Underhand cut and fill mining methods are used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater, and Galena mines in the western US in an effort to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary mining method where access below the ore is limited. The method has evolved at each mine to meet the unique situations associated with their milling procedure and mine layout. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine are presented in this paper, accompanied by a summary of the mechanical properties of the backfill and its in-situ geomechanical behavior.

"INTRODUCTIONRecent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of knowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content.Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indi¬cate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of the metals occur as plumbojarosite and argentojaeosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are un-doubtedly considerable tonnages of oxidized lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable that in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The treatment of such ores therefore presents an important problem, since a product is discarded from ores from which the recoveries of lead and silver have been below 70 per cent which is probably too low-grade to warrant aftertreatment by any process now in use."

The water-flooding of oil sands has been widely practiced for many years in the Bradford and Allegany fields. Its effect upon the production of these fields has been almost phenomenal. In 1907 their estimated production was 3500 bbl. per day; in December, 1929, the combined production is estimated at 33,000 bbl. per day, an increase of almost 1000 per cent. in 22 years. This increase in production is directly attributable to the successful application of water-flooding, which has transformed the fields that were rapidly approaching abandonment into one of the most actively operated regions associated with the petroleum industry, and has made them important factors in the production of Pennsylvania Grade crude oil. The writer is indebted to many companies for information included in this paper. He is particularly grateful to the Sloan and Zook Co., the Petroleum Reclamation Co., George Bovaird, Jr., and the Associated Producers Co., of Bradford, Pa., who have generously made available much valuable data. Owing to the frequently competitive and confidential nature of property purchases, it has not always been possible to make specific reference to individual wells or properties; but wherever feasible, specific references have been made. Economic Factors The successful application of water-flooding for increasing the recovery of oil has been almost confined to the Bradford and Allegany fields. This has been due not only to legal restrictions in other fields and to very favorable sand conditions in the Bradford-Allegany region, but also to certain economic factors which are worthy of consideration. There has been some alarm regarding the effects of the rapidly increasing production upon the oil market but the writer is inclined to believe that future development can be made sufficiently flexible to meet the demand for this grade of oil. There has been a decided tendency toward consolidation of properties by mergers and purchases and, in addition, many of the individual producers are content to take advantage of floods advancing on their holdings from adjoining properties without developing their own on an intensive scale. This paper reviews advances in the technology of abrasion resistant iron and steels, which could help combat abrasion and wear in mining operations. With the recent progress in high chromium alloy iron development, high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, aloy cost reduced, and cracking problems avoided. Data on erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons; trends in the development of improved cast steels; and factors influencing toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are all considered. The 7% Mn. 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to combine toughness and abrasion resistance, and composite castings are a means of combating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

However, Pb is one of the toxic elements, which is undesirable due to environmental and safety reasons, thus Pb-free alternative alloy is preferred for new soldering materiaL Sn-Ag and Sn-Zn based alloys have been viewed as very promising candidates, among many potential substitutes. Addition of third element to these alloys will decrease melting point of the alloys. Hence, Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys are expected to be suitable for replacing Sn-Pb solder alloy. In order to dcsign new Pb-free soldering materials, it is crucial to understand precise thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of alloy systems. In the present work, ion current ratios of Ag to In and Mg to Zn were measured for Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys by mass spectrometry, respectively. Also, the authors reviewed the thermodynamic properties of terminal binary alloys determined by other researchers and evaluated a thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of each binary alloy. Thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of liquid Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg ternary alloys were determined, utilizing the assessed Gibbs free energy of terminal binary alloys with the measured ion current ratios using mass speetrometer.

The medical evaluation of the health effects of dust exposure in the mining industry should be based on the premise that the results of the medical examinations will be considered in relation to the previous history of exposure to dust.(l) To this end the Mines Regulation Act and the Regulations under that Act in West- ern Australia provide for: the prime responsibility for dust sampling to rest with the mining companies; the appointment of a Ventilation officer by each mine and the sampling and record- ing by him of dust and toxic gases in work places at three monthly intervals, or more frequently as required; the appointment of a Mines Medical Officer who shall make provision for the medical examination of persons and the prevention of occupational diseases; the appointment of a Ventilation Board, consisting of the State Mining Engineer, the Senior Inspector of Mines for the State, an Inspector of Mines having specialised training in ventilation tech- nology, a medical practitioner having specialised experience in occupational health problems relevant to the mining industry, and a Scientific Officer having duties under the provisions of the Clean Air Act, 1964;

Microscopic Studies were performed on ore samples from the Muro banded iron ore deposit in Nigeria and the Marampa iron ore deposit in Sierra Leone. Ore characteristics that affect processing of both ores were compared with a view toward assisting mineral processing engineers in choosing the most suitable methods for upgrading the ore. The Nigerian ore contains 30% to 37% (by weight) Fe and the Sierra Leonean ore contains 34% to 51% (by weight) Fe. Hematite is the main iron mineral in both ores. The Sierra Leonean ore is relatively coarse grained (typically around 250 µm) and can be upgraded by conventional gravitational methods. In contrast, the Nigerian iron ore is fine grained and must be ground to -74 µm to liberate the hematite for recovery by flotation. Both ores contain high percentages of phosphorus and sulfur, which are above the required specifications for direct reduction and blast-furnace practice. These deleterious elements can be rejected by grinding and flotation.

A recent survey of existing analytical results, and an attempt to correlate them with each other and with the known history and behavior of the samples, indicated that none of the commonly applied methods could be considered established as intrinsically reliable. It was. therefore, desired to attempt to establish the reliahility of some one method by external evidence. If this were to be accomplished, other methods could then be evaluated in terms of the method establibhed. The correct method was accordingly to be chosen without regard for cost, speed, or convenience; with the requirements for routine application to be reserved for 1ater consideration. The method of total combustion was chosen and submitted to a limited number of tests against primary standard samples. Considerable experimental difficulty was encountered, indicating that additional work on the experimental arrangements is desirable. While the work to (late by no means represents a completed investigation, it is helieved that the combustion method is basically sound and that its development should be continued. Choice of Method Of the several available methods, mechanical disintegration. electrochemical methods'2'3 modifications of the Sieverts experiment,% and vacuum fusion, were all judged to contain one or more factors of un- certainty not at present completely cvaluated or suhject to complete control. These methods, therefore, were considered currently unsuitable for referee purposes. Solid evolution was considered to be of doubtful significance when conducted in the alpha range. A reasonable chance for a true analysis was found for evolution in the gamma range. Preliminary tests have indicated a very slow rate for evolutioll from gamma iron. indicating a running time of possibly 100 hr. for a one-centimeter sample. Difliculty in distinguishing such slow. evolution from blank gas was anticipated, hence the method was not consitlerctl the most suitable for the present purpose. The combustion method was evaluated as being most sound on fundamental principles. The only important unknown would be to determine that the iron oxide formed did not occlude water at the tcmperaturv of the combustion.with the odvious precautions of using a sound and clean specimen, providing a system sufficiently tight to give acceptable blanks in longtime runs, and providing a suficicntly sensitive measuring system, reasonable, precise, and truthful analytical results could be logically expected. The tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a clecimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. The consistent occurrence of organic carbon early in the paragenesis of Mississippi Valley-type sulfide deposits suggests a genetic link between organic carbon and the sulfide ores. Reduction of sulfate in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is commonly proposed as the precipitation mechanism for these deposits, but inorganic sulfate reduction is too slow to be important to the chemistry of the ore zone, and bacteria, which catalyze sulfate reduction at low temperatures, are not known to survive at the temperatures of mineralization. Sulfate reduction with or without bacteria is not consistent with the sulfur Isotope evidence. Sulfur isotope studies also indicate that the derivation of sulfur from hydrocarbon at the sites of mineralization is unlikely. Organometallic complexing may be involved in the transport of metals, but no plausible mechanism for breaking these complexes at the sites of mineralization has been proposed. Reduction of partly oxidized sulfur species in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is a possibility which deserves further scrutiny.

As duct-fan systems push the envelope of power, length and cost, their design calls for a more comprehensive technoeconomic analysis to ensure they deliver the expected results without failure and cost overrun. This work explores the numerous factors to include in the design of an extensive (semi-)rigid duct-fan system. Besides delivering a given airflow, the system must satisfy component limitations and power constraints during its lifetime. We evaluate the assumptions underlying the positioning of in-line booster fans in a long gapless duct-fan system and propose a strategy for specifying the location and blade pitch of successive booster fans to prevent system failure due to a partial vacuum.

Nodules of carbonaceous matter have been observed in several Archaean peraluminous granites adjoining the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand Basin. These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Ph-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter Ol3C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoidand sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

Within the framework of the adaptation of the South-East European Technicentre (Technicentre Sud-Est Européen TSEE), SNCF Voyageurs appointed Pini with the project management mission (MOE) for the design and construction monitoring of a road tunnel. This investment has a dual function: during the site transformation phase, it facilitates the work logistics (and shorten traffic flows); and in the operating phase, it is intended to ease all movements on the site over the long term. This is a limited-length gallery (50 meters) to be performed in conventional excavation below Poniatowski Avenue (Paris 12e). The excavation, crossing the entire width of the boulevard, constitutes a major challenge, given the very low coverage (less than 5.5 m), and the surrounding main infrastructures. The same project mis- sion includes the design of the tunnel accesses, via reinforced-concrete frame structures. The targeted design questions several aspects of its execution framework, and particularly, continuous operation must be guaranteed to the neighboring networks during the works. The installation of an umbrella- pipe all along the excavation profile, the progression in divided sub-sections, and the implementation of a complex monitoring system are hence key elements for limiting and controlling any deformation. An exhaustive 3D finite element modelling was performed, taking into account the detailed phasing of construction (pre-support, excavation in divided section, preliminary support and definitive lining), to dimen- sion the structures, and, overall, to analyze the impacts on the neighboring structures and facilities. During the execution phase (planned for mid-2024), monitoring activities with back-analyses as close as possible to the works are planned.
