Y.).--I presume, gentlemen, that Mr. Howard's experience with the Great Falls basic-lined converter has been as regards the tonnage produced from a single lining, perhaps, a world's record. About 6 months ago Mr. Howard shut down and tore out what was left of the first basic-lining which was installed at the Old Dominion, the lining having produced something over 70,000,000 lb. of copper. This was due probably not only to the very excellent grade of the matte which was produced by the smelter there,

We already utilized the high accuracy of the electronic delay detonator to investigate its effect on over break remaining rock damage, and surface smoothness. This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the shock wave energy transmission and reflection through boundary layers (joints, fractures) or between inhomogeneous geomedium with different physical properties. The conclusions drawn significantly clarify the dynamic failure mechanics because of shock wave energy transmission and reflection through different rock materials and their jointed interfaces. Thorough studies were performed to document the transient, two dimensional deformation characteristics, the normal and shear stress fields for inhomogeneous geomedium focusing on the influence of the internal geometrical shapes, relative density variations and packing of the grain boundaries.

Advanced remote sensing can be a powerful new information tool to help private and public entities make better environmental and resource management decisions. However, some regulated entities are reluctant to develop or use this tool because of their concerns that it will lead to increased risks and costs of environmental legal liability. They fear that new ways of monitoring the environment will increase liability, undermine existing enforcement agreements, reopen compliance agreements, and generally provide a competitive disadvantage to early adopters by accelerating environmental cleanup costs. Others counter that the increased risks are marginal, and that several advantages outweigh these risks, including the opportunity to more effectively manage environmental operations, target and set priorities, measure and track management and compliance effectiveness, provide more defensible environmental assessments and baseline conditions, make and defend optimal siting decisions, and avoid or resolve environmental disputes. This paper offers strategic advice on ways regulated entities can enjoy the benefits of these powerful new information tools while mitigating down-side legal and compliance risks as much as possible.

A simulation of batch-flotation experiments was carried out using a simple empirical model to identify the process parameters that would give maximum yield at any given ash level. The relationship between the maximum yield values and the percentage ash-reduction ratio (ARR) has shown two regions where the collector and the frother dosages have individual influences on the flotation performance. Based on this observation, a simple "selection-criterion diagram" is proposed. This diagram can he used to select the process parameters to achieve maximum yield, for a given ash content of the concentrate and at any given flotation period.

Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

Rising costs have affected the cost of operating and install­ing crushing circuits, just as they have affected every other area and there is little possibility that the cost cycle is about to be reversed - power costs, wear materials costs and labour costs continue to increase but a basically stable gold price makes little allowance for these cost increases. Additionally, lower grades of ores being worked, and harder feed materials have a significant effect on the potential for higher processing costs. There are, of course, options for size reduction - some of them newer than others - some are suitable for certain types of ores and less suitable for others and it can sometimes be difficult to ascertain the accuracy of anticipated results before plant design and con­struction are completed - by which time the capital outlayed will preclude a change to another method ofreduction. The minimum sulphur level which can be attained during fluid bed roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates is largely determined by the residual sulfates of calcium, magnesium, and zinc. The fractional conversion of these elements to their respective sulfates is derived from semi- empirical relationships, and multiple regression analysis is used to fit the relationships to experimental data from a commercial fluidized bed roaster. The resulting equation shows that the calcine leaving the roaster contains almost no zinc sulfate, nearly all of the calcium is present as calcium sulfate, and the amount of magnesium sulfate formed is primarily dependent upon the roaster temperatures.

The last twenty years have seen the advent of environmental concerns and sustainable development, and the industry has witnessed the rise of Environmental Management Systems and their registration through several international standardization systems such as EMAS and ISO 14001. Beyond EMS and ISO 14001, which new goal the mining industry should aim at. Life-cycle assessment (LCA), another tool from the Environmental Management System series, is also on the rise and currently the object of an international standard (ISO 14040:1997). Through LCA, it is possible to assess the environmental aspects and potential impacts associated with products and services, taking into account all the activities required for its fabrication, its use, its transportation and its disposal. How could LCA be applied to the mining industry ? Is the international market pressurizing on mining companies to supply an ?environmental ore?? What about the automobile industry and its use of LCA ? Will it influence the ferrous and non-ferrous metal industry, suppliers of raw materials ? This paper presents a review of possible applications of LCA for the mining industry as well as world trends.

Surface areas of two synthetic and three natural consolidated porous samples were obtained by the Orr low-pressure permeametry technique. The results suggest that the Orr technique is a useful substitute for the low-temperature gas adsorption (BET) method for determining the surface area of rock samples. It was more rapid than the BET method, and the surface-area values obtained were larger but agreed better with BET values than values calculated from the Kozeny-Carman equation. Efforts were unsuccessful to demonstrate the influence of channel-size distribution on pressure-flow rate curves by means of experimental data and a parallel channel model.

Magnetic data was collected from the Yeoju historical sites using the fluxgate gradiometer through six sites & several grids. We measured the vertical gradient by the FM256 Fluxgate gradiometer. The readings were logged every half meter. The obtained data were processed and treated to introduce a high quality magnetic image. The gradiometer results defined various positive and negative magnetic anomalies, which revealed the existence of several archaeological features of different shapes and sizes. The study of the process magnetic images give us a concept that the subsurface features are caved shape stone chamber tombs, burial mounds, deep room structure, Yeoju mausoleum, pagoda?s square foundation stones, walls etc. All these are superior work of early Goguryeo inheriting orthodox Silla style. So, the study area may have great archeological interest.
