Furthermore, it presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of deep-sea mining technology and equipment, offering valuable insights into this field. By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

"2.1. INTRODUCTIONNo agreement can be perfect in the sense that it contemplates and provides for all eventualities. Mineral acquisition agreements are usually negotiated and drafted at a time when an orebody is no more than a gleam in a geologist’s eye, so it is hardly possible to provide for development and operation in other than the most general terms. However, an agreement that stops short of contemplating the possibility of an orebody and production is ill-advised. Accordingly, it is important to provide procedures to make decisions that will let the project proceed, even in the face of a fallingout between parties. Whether the parties are shareholders in a corporation or venturers in a contractual common undertaking like a joint venture, differences of opinion and disputes will occur. Unfortunately, more and more are ending up before the courts. Besides greed and the growing tendency in society to fight rather than talk, there are other factors that contribute to the increase of litigation. In some jurisdictions, agreements have tended to become complicated, often defying interpretation, even by a lawyer, and explorationists want their budgets to go into the ground as constructive work rather than into a lawyer’s pocket. All this has led to a growing tendency for corporations to take the attitude that the chances of finding a mine are, at best, marginal and there are lots of earlier agreements in the files to draw from, so why not prepare their own agreements? As discussed in the preceding chapter, this can be folly. All these factors can quickly have parties facing each other in court while a project sits idle. Added to this is the problem that, in some jurisdictions, lawyers may take cases on a contingency-fee basis, sometimes promoting the pursuit of a nebulous claim.When an orebody is discovered, someone will always want some, or more, for himself. There is a breed of “prospectors” who prospect for legal actions, on the somewhat sound grounds that a major corporation will buy off nuisance litigation, rather than incurring the cost and effort of attacking even a poorly founded claim in the courts. They may even find a winner. Besides, it is far more comfortable and relaxing to prospect for problems and legal niceties than to prospect for an orebody.1 In short, it is appropriate to consider briefly some of the factors relating to lawsuits and judgments. Although many of the comments are made in the context of the common law and the Canadian legal system, most of the concepts and suggestions are applicable to any legal system."

In support of its objective to conserve mineral resources by minimizing premature failure of materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted a cooperative study with the U.S. Department of Energy on the erosion and abrasion resistance of hard materials for valves in coal conversion systems. This report describes a newly developed erosion-testing apparatus and presents data on the erosion resistance of over 200 materials. Erosion resistance of most metals was comparatively low. In contrast, ceramics and cermets such as B4C, WC, SiC, Si3N4, and TiB2, when fabricated to minimize porosity, displayed greater than five times the erosion resistance of metals. Coatings such as boron diffused into Mo and WC, chemical-vapor-deposited TiCN, and electrodeposited TiB2 were highly erosion resistant if applied in thicknesses ranging from 60 to 75 µm. Erosion resistance of cemented carbides was inversely related to metal binder content.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The object of this investigation was to correlate the crushing strength of green pellets prepared from magnetite, specular and earthy hematite with the particle size of these respective raw materials. In this study no attempt was made to correlate the strength of fired pellets and particle size. The effect of particle size upon a number of fine ores and concentrates was studied. Much of the low-grade ore reserves in the Lake Superior Region must be finely ground before concentration and then agglomerated for iron and steelmaking processes. Fine natural ores also must be agglomerated. Pellets constitute an important type of agglomerate. Considerable handling occurs during screening to remove undersize and oversize pellets, and in transfering green unfired pellets from the balling machines to the heat-hardening equipment. As a result the strength of the green pellets is a factor of great importance.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted in eastern Kentucky drift mines as part of an ongoing research program to characterize the outcrop barrier zone. "Hillseams" were identified as the dominant geologic cause of roof instability unique to the outcrop barrier zone, with many roof fall injuries and fatalities attributed to them. Hillseam is the eastern Kentucky miners term for weather-enlarged tension joints that occur in shallow mine overburden where surface slopes are steep. Hillseams are most conspicuous within 200 ft laterally of a coalbed outcrop and under 300 ft or less of overburden. Hillseams form by stress relief, and therefore tend to parallel topographic contours and ridges. They can intersect at various angles, especially under the nose of a ridge, and create massive blocks or wedges of roof prone to failure. Examples of hillseams are described in both outcrop and in coal mine roof to establish their geologic character and contribution to roof failure.

Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

Internal-combustion engines have been used in Belgian mines for a long time. As early as 1899, the use of these engines underground was considered, but the general policy was to prohibit such an application unless ministorial permission was granted in special instances. At that time only gasoline engines were available, and a few of these were installed as stationary engines, although in general they wore replaced later by electric or compressed air motors. However, the number of gasoline locomotives continued to increase. Regulations governing; the use of these locomotives seen were formulated and as early as 1920, when a new set of regulations was promulgated, these of gasoline locomotives in mines could be authorized by the Provincial Inspection Department and no longer depended on obtaining a ministerial decision. Since 1931 this authorization may be given by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Director of the Mining District. Since 1920, safe practices have been incorporated in the regulations.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

Preparing the Metals.—Ordinary silver wire was hard-drawn to No. 23 Brown and Sharp gauge; it was cut in two, and one piece was carefully annealed in the ordinary way. The wire was prepared by Messrs. Guild and Delano, jewelers, Boston. The Ansonia Brass and Copper Co., Ansonia, Conn., kindly furnished me with some hard-drawn copper wire No. 31, A. W. G., and some of the same wire after annealing in the ordinary way.

"The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

Withdrawing timber in coal mines is done for the purpose of inducing the roof to cave in the mined-out areas and thereby relieve stresses in the immediate roof material over the working places adjacent to the breakline of the roof, thus preventing the crushing of the ends of pillars and adding to the safety of those engaged in pillar extraction. A secondary purpose is the recovery of timber for further use either as prop-, crossbars, lagging, sprags or cap pieces. At some mines timber is withdrawn as a precaution against fire which may he of spontaneous origin, because wood always aids a fire of any origin. With some of the power-driven types of machines now in use a greater proportion of mine timber may be recovered, and in mines where pillars are left too narrow for their removal some of the timber in rooms might be salvaged for further use.

Clay shales are currently being assessed as possible host rock formations for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this thesis was to develop and validate a mechanically-based model of the deformation and failure process of a clay shale, namely Opalinus Clay (OPA), with particular focus on the influence of anisotropy on the short-term response of circular tunnels. To achieve this goal, a hybrid continuum-discontinuum numerical approach was developed in combination with new field measurements from the Mont Terri underground research laboratory. The response of OPA during the excavation of a full-scale emplacement (FE) test tunnel was characterized by geodetic monitoring of wall displacements, radial extensometers and longitudinal inclinometers. The deformation measurements indicated strong directionality induced by the combined effect of in-situ stress field and bedding planes striking parallel to the tunnel axis, with the most severe deformation occurring in the direction approximately perpendicular to the material layering. Computer simulations were conducted using a newly-extended combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM), a numerical technique which allows the explicit simulation of brittle fracturing and associated seismicity. The numerical experimentation firstly focused on the laboratory-scale analysis of failure processes (e.g., acoustic activity) in brittle rocks, and on the role of strength and modulus anisotropy in the failure behaviour of OPA in tension and compression. The fracturing behaviour of unsupported circular excavations in laminated rock masses was then analyzed under different in-situ stress conditions. Lastly, the proposed modelling methodology was applied to the aforementioned FE tunnel to obtain unique insights into the EDZ formation process around emplacement tunnels for nuclear waste. The calibrated numerical model suggested delamination along bedding planes and subsequent extensional fracturing as key mechanisms of the damage process potentially leading to buckling and spalling phenomena. Overall, the research findings are already having a direct impact on the preliminary design process of an underground repository for nuclear waste in Switzerland.

Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co.Claims leased by the Lincoln Mines, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57 E.: and sec. 1, T. 4 S., R 56 E., M. The property owners are continuing operations and are now engaged in building a 20-ton mill.The claims of the North Tern Flute Mining & Development Cc. are in sec. 1, T. 4 S., R. 56 E., M. D. B. & M. Merle F. Schofield is president of the company and maintains an office at Hike, Nev. These claims were leased by H. P. "Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting blade profile, floor profile, and blade thickness), speed, motor power output, and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scaled model of a load-haul-dump in full factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated to penetration and draft; muckpile particle size is positively correlated to penetration and negatively correlated to draft (p < 0.0014). The results show that buckets with a semi-spade cutting nose profile yield the highest penetration (mean 118.30 mm) followed by those with the spade (mean 108.88 mm), which also yield higher penetration than those straight blades (mean 95.19 mm). Bucket floor profile and blade thickness had no significant effect on penetration or draft. Also, we determined that increasing the speed and motor power output, simultaneously, can reduce bucket penetration. Thus, operators should not waste energy for no additional gain or even loss in bucket penetration. Also, the work finds speed and motor power output each combine with muckpile particle sizes to affect bucket penetration. This research furthers our understanding of the effectiveness of different bucket geometries in improving penetration and reducing draft for rubber tire loaders.

Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED&apos;S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. The trick lies not in the unit operations which are quite standard but rather In the modifications made to the plant and operating procedures to cope with the much higher levels of tramp elements.

The San Andres mine, located in the western mountain region of Honduras, Central America, contains epithermal gold mineralization as disseminations, in quartz-chalcedonic veins and stockworks. Host rocks include a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary conglomerates, sandstones, rhyodacite tuffs and andesites. Mineralization is controlled by northwest and northeast striking, normal faults and fractures which dip steeply east and west. Currently, 500 STPD of 1. 93 Grams/MT gold ore is being open-pit mined from the conglomerate and andesite. The mine is at the west end of a mineralized zone that can be traced over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers.
