The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Coolie, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman Counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor Counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across southwestern Wichita County into Archer County. Developments during 1938 Important discoveries in the district were considerably more numerous and of more economic importance than for several years. In addition to a number of small, relatively unimportant discoveries and to the usual local extensions to the various producing fields in the several counties, at least eight fields, most of them apparently of considerable areal extent and importance, were found. The Helmerich and Payne, Incorporated and Blackwell Oil and Gas Company No. 1 Wilson. 4 miles southeast of the town of Holliday, in north central Archer County, encountered a pay of Strawn age at a depth of 3841 to 3858 ft., and was completed for an initial production of 1952 bbl. T'his well opened a new deep pool in the K. M. A. producing zone 8 miles southeast of the K. M. A. production. Subsequently an additional deeper horizon, also of lowcr Strawn age, was discovered by wells that failed to yield commerecial oil from the horizon of the discovery well.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted radiation-ventilation studies in six large underground uranium mines to investigate the extent of radon-daughter exposure experienced by the miners and to analyze the ventilation systems to set what changes were required to achieve recommended radiation standards. The studies entailed tracing and measuring the mines' ventilating air, quantitatively and qualitaitively, from its entrance into the mines, through production areas, and lack to the surface. Pressures consumed in creating airflow through mine circuits were determined by altimeter surveys. Air quantities were measured with anemometers or by chemical smoke cloud methods. Air quantities delivered through tubing were determined using U-tube water gages to magnahelic gages to measure velocity pressures. Radon-daughters were filtered from mine air to measure alpha activity; activity levels were converted to "working levels," the established unit for reporting miner exposure. Attention was given to locating unnecessary contamination influx sources and recirculating air. The radiation-ventilation surveys showed that where basic principles of food ventilation were not followed, high alpha radiation levels invariably resulted. Some mines required more primary air for controlling radiation levels throughout active areas, but more efficient use of available air was generally possible. Premature contamination of intake air was prevalent where development Openings intersected ore or passed by worked-out stopes. Several auxiliary systems were inefficient in secondary distribution, recirculating air already too highly contaminated for ventilation. Many got these common problems can be traced try the lack of dine planning with radiation control in mind.

Conclusions regarding the use or omission of stemming in blasting have not peen reached, pending completion of all aspects of this investigation. The results from the dust phase of this study on six classes of stemming prove that the kind of stemming affects the amount of dust produced from blasting. In previous work at the Mount Weather testing adit it was demonstrated that blasting produces the highest dust concentrations of any of the mining processes.5/ Under the conditions prevailing at the Mount Weather testing adit, the average of all rounds having a break of at least 95 percent showed that the least amount of dust was produced when no stemming was used.

Prior laboratory work has demonstrated -that much of the fine ash-forming minerals entering a flotation froth are there as a result of water carry-over from the bulk contents of the flotation cell (Arnold and Aplan, 1986a). Using a bank of four 300 cu ft WEMCO flotation cells cleaning a well-liberated Lower Kittanning seam coal, test results show that the sulfur and ash content of the froth is directly related to the water content of the froth (or inversely related to the percent of solids in the froth). Reagent changes which result in a watery froth produce a higher ash content in the froth. A direct comparison of laboratory and plant results show that the standard laboratory flotation test produces a product higher in sulfur and ash than that produced in the plant. Caution should be exercised when extrapolating laboratory test results to the plant situation. A method of estimating coal flotation product quality in the plant based on laboratory tests is given.

"Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) are intended to be a negotiated agreement between an industrial proponent and a community, local or regional citizens’ organization. Although the elements have grown over the past two decades from a simple agreement to exceedingly complex legal frameworks, the intention remains the same: to outline the roles and responsibilities of the two stakeholders and the natural resource development on their lands beyond environmental assessment. These agreements were born out of comprehensive indigenous land claims and have become the cornerstone of community engagement today in most indigenous nations. In the case of mixed communities, those that have beneficiaries of land claims and those who are not, social acceptance remains uneven and reflective of an unequal distribution of decision-making power (political ecology). This Differential Social License can cause conflict and a breakdown of the societal fabric that binds communities of diverse populations, resulting in inequality, fictitious wealth generation and failure of infrastructure. This paper presents a case study of how the development of Differential Social License developed in the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut as a result of an IBA negotiated between Tahera Diamond Corp. and the Kitikmeot Inuit Organisation in 2004 for the Jericho Diamond Mine.Introduction / Background Social license (social license to operate or SLO) has become an essential part of the social governance ‘toolkit’ demanded by mining stakeholders in today’s world. Stakeholders are now insistent that companies operate more closely under the tenets of sustainable development and provide for an increased level of community participation. Social license is not simply a matter of communicating with a community, to earn its consent for or acceptance of a project. It requires that we engage with the individuals and organisations who ally themselves with communities, or who sometimes side with dissident factions of a community. SLO is a process associated with and informed by political ecology or the recognition that unequal decision-making power exists amongst stakeholders."

The purification process of water-mining carnallite and rough potassium chloride concentrate from Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. are investigated by the preprocessing-reverse flotation technology respectively. The results show that the impurities such as calcium sulfate and sodium chloride can be effectively removed from water-mining carnallite ore and rough potassium chloride concentrate by the new technology, the low-sodium carnallite is obtained and the final potassium chloride product greatly upgraded. The content and the recovery of KCl in the low-sodium carnallite are 25.78% and 97.50%, meanwhile the content of NaCl, CaSO4 in the low-sodium carnallite are 0.56% and 0.24%, and the removal of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate in the low-sodium carnallite are 97.48%, 85.10% respectively. The KCl content and recovery of high quality potassium chloride product are 98.25%, 96.70%, and CaSO4 content is 0.40% with 83.24% calcium sulfate removed in the high quality potassium chloride product.

This investigation was conducted to identify the principle causes of spoil instability problems in the Eastern Coal Province. The study was also conducted to develop a matrix to predict the strength and groundwater parameters necessary to conduct stability analyses on a proposed reclamation scheme. Suggestive methods to reduce spoil instability potential are also included. Numerous physical property, strength, compressibility, chemical and mineralogical tests were conducted on mine spoil samples obtained from 11 different surface mine sites. Site characteristics that influence the position of the post reclamation groundwater table were identified. Distinct regions within the Eastern Coal Province with high incidences of surface mine slides or high landslide susceptibility were identified. The application of the predictive matrices developed in this study is for surface mine sites mined and reclaimed in general accordance with the Surface Mine Reclamation Control Act of 1977. A review of current mining practices and the relative effect on spoil stability is included.

In the 1890s, The Goldfields Water Supply Department in Western Australia commissioned the diamond drilling of two deep artesian exploratory water bores near Coolgardie (Blatchford, 1899). At the time, in spite of strongly-worded advice to the contrary from the Government geologists, there was a wide popular belief that you could obtain artesian groundwater virtually anywhere providing you drilled deep enough. The first Coolgardie hole was drilled to over 900 m, despite the fact that the bore penetrated granite from a depth of 5 m below the surface. Drilling proceeded for more than 16 months, between July 1896 and November 1897. A small quantity of salt water was struck at a depth of 36 m. The second bore was mercifully terminated at a depth of 50 m, also in granite, with again only a small inflow of salt water. Such were the desperate lengths that were pursued to obtain a reliable water supply for the influx of people in the Eastern Goldfields gold rush. The WA Goldfields continued to rely on huge condensers for water supply until that great engineering feat, the construction of a water pipeline from Mundaring Weir to Coolgardie, was completed in 1903. An enormous network of rail tracks penetrated outwards from Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie for the collection of timber, principally to feed the condensers. Remnants of the rail network are still visible today. The acute shortage of fresh water led to great deprivation, disease and death among the early miners. Today, the water problems faced by the mining industry are thankfully not as severe, but they are nevertheless no less challenging. The southern part of the WA Goldfields is a notoriously difficult area for finding potable quality groundwater. Even as recently as the 1990s, there were occasional serious efforts to find potable groundwater in that area, some very imaginative and innovative. One mining company, working south of Southern Cross, spent many months experimenting with recovery of potable quality water from a shallow freshwater lens overlying hypersaline water in a low permeability weathered granite aquifer. They used very low capacity pumps manufactured from car windscreen washer pumps powered by solar panels.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company (Ohio Valley) has operated the Powhatan No. 6 Mine in Belmont County, Ohio since 1972. Ohio University owns a 455-acre research farm over a portion of the Ohio Valley reserve containing 51 acres of old-growth forest known as Dysart Woods. In 1988, when Ohio Valley applied for a new mining area for its first longwall located several miles away from Dysart Woods, Ohio University claimed that mining at that distance would lower the regional water table and kill the old trees. In response, Ohio Valley began to study potential impacts from longwall mining on hydrology, soil moisture, and tree growth. Early studies examined the impacts of longwall mining on hydrology, soil moisture, and tree growth directly over mined areas compared to woodlots that were not undermined. A subsequent study examined tree-ring growth for a five-year period before and after longwall mining for several woodlots, some directly over panels and others at distances of up to 2000 ft away. No significant differences in growth rate associated with longwall mining were observed. New research was begun that compared longwall-mining impacts on groundwater hydrology, available soil moisture, and tree growth in two stands of mature trees located near Dysart Woods in order to confirm the earlier results. Using a test technique known as "Before-and-After-Controlled-Impact-Pairs," data was collected from one woodlot (test) that was undermined and from another (control) that was not undermined. Data collection began several years prior to longwall mining and has continued for several years after mining. The data for the test site shows that although the shallow and deep groundwater levels were affected by longwall mining, the soil moisture, vigor rating, or the growth rate of trees did not decline significantly compared to the control site where there were hydrologic impacts. The study shows that there are no known significant impacts to trees from longwall mining. The results of these studies were used by Ohio Valley to obtain State approval to longwall to within 300 ft of Dysart Woods

Completion of a project requires two separate money-focused activities, namely economic evaluation of the cash flows underlying the project (before financing) and if the economics look promising, how it can be financed. Economic evaluation might be best led by a person with a technical-operating background, whereas financing might be best led by an accountant. Both should be presented in simple language with easy to understand models. Economic evaluation has a sad and bad history because it evolved from the fringes of accounting. Anyone can become a self-appointed practitioner. Some still take pride in mathematical complexity without realising that they distance themselves from the decision-makers and alienate other team members. Today there is no evaluation modelling consistency across the mining industry and this reflects poorly on our discipline. It is not tolerated amongst our peers in engineering and accounting. In 2009 æbest practiceÆ economic evaluation modelling is well defined. It is:easy to follow;tailored to its purpose;transparent;discipline, rigour and consistency;recording of all source data; and hencequick to audit. Mantra: If you cannot readily understand my model you do not have a problem, I do! The task of the economic model is to make the range of business cases underlying the decision easy to understand. Intellectual power is used to simplify the decision to its key issues and risks and to present the full range of possible business outcomes in readily understood terms. Project team members, management and the board must be able to make their decisions with æeyes wide openÆ. A steering committee should be established to develop a set of standards and practices that could be adopted for economic modelling within the industry. The industry needs to purge itself of the undisciplined economic evaluation modelling that now characterises the discipline.

IN order to make his work easier, every master of any art whatever keeps always to the road that he has learned or that his skill or good judgment has shown him to be the best. Although there are various methods used in making moulds for guns, depending on whether they are large or small, nevertheless almost the same road is traveled in all. You must first know that it is necessary to make a pattern of wood or clay exactly as the gun is to be, with those ornaments of cornices and rings that you wish to be in the bronze. Let us suppose that you wish this pattern to be of wood. You must try to have for this a piece of fir as long and thick as you wish, dry, solid, and well seasoned, with few or no knots if possible. This should be longer than the gun by the length of the head and foot rests where it is pivoted [83v] so that it can be turned as on a lathe. On the end where the mouth is to be it should project out enough so that you can attach a feeding head at the top of the casting. You can make or have this pattern made round, fluted, spiral, or half fluted, as you like best, making the measurements exactly correct with all care and attention. Then two bearing trestles must be fixed firmly in the ground, one at the head and one at the foot, as is usually done with roasting spits and as you see drawn here. I would like to commend the author on his description of Pinto Valley's plant, and its interesting innovations. The author's discussion of 18 ft in diameter by 21 ft long primary ball mills (the largest wet ball mills made to date) is of considerable importance to those who have been engaged in the field of studying ball mill liner wear as it relates to various grinding installations. While it is stated that the mills have operated on a fixed tonnage and therefore it has been difficult to determine the best liner pattern, calculations from the data in the paper indicates that for mills 1, 2, 5, and 6, the tonnage per hour varies from a low of 223 for mill No. 1, up to a high of 314, for mill No. 2, while mills 5 and 6 calculate 285 and 246, respectively. Analysis of the wear patterns for the single wave liners used in mill No. 1 as compared to the double wave liners in mill No. 2, suggests that the author's data may tell more than he suspects about liner wear to be expected and thus what should be a best pattern selection from what may appear to be only limited hours of operation. [Fig. A] is a reproduction of author's [Fig. 10], to which wear forecast patterns [F-1 and F-2] have been added. Forecasts are based on many previous studies of large diameter ball mill operations over many years of field service. "Key project participants, including owners, engineers, and contractors continually seek for sound and structured decision analysis on how to select the best contracting method for successful project delivery. In addition to being burdened with technical challenges, lack of resources, budget shortcomings, regulatory requirements, and bureaucratic and politically mandated obstacles, the project participants need a reliable decision analysis model on the best project delivery method. The pendulum of choice for contracting continually swings back and forth between traditional design-bid-build and alternative delivery options such as design-build, progressive design-build, construction manager at risk, and public-private-partnership. For large tunnel projects, the decision process is further complicated due to contract packaging options as well as risks in underground construction. Contracting strategies for large tunnels require thorough consideration of performance, risk, quality, operability, cost and schedule. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and tools for an unbiased and balanced evaluation and ranking system in the procurement of large tunneling projects. INTRODUCTION Successful project delivery hinges upon meeting the owners’ expectations and key performance indicators. Large tunneling programs benefit from a thorough understanding and successful implementation of project delivery options by key project participants including the owners, engineers and contractors. The key to success is a collaborative advancement of project as the key project participants knowledgably address the applicable management, performance, risk, quality, cost, operability and schedule considerations throughout a project realization cycle. PROJECT REALIZATION CYCLE All projects have customary planning, design, construction, commissioning and operation phases that may seem to be sequential but in reality that are well integrated and dependent on one another. A glitch in any phase of a project realization cycle could hinder a successful outcome and none of the project partners are immune to consequences whenever and wherever they may surface."

The machine for the hybrid method called JACSMAN is ordinarily a dual shaft machine. Each shaft has augers at three different levels and nozzles for jetting at two different levels. The distance between two shafts may be changed according to the particular requirements. Figure 4 shows single shaft and a treated soil column created by the method. The diameter of the auger is 1.0 m. As the jetting nozzles locate at the periphery of the auger, jetting can achieve the additional treated soil column beyond the diameter of the auger. The diameter of the jetting improvement is fixed at 2.3 m.

Geologic investigation of a mineralized zone in eastern Alabama indicates that large quantities of talc and soapstone are scattered over a wide area close to the surface. Laboratory experiments show that this material may be upgraded to a high-quality talc. A market survey indicates that the talc deposits may be of current and long-range interest. The anthophyllite asbestos which is associated with the talc does not appear to occur in sufficient quantities to be considered as a primary commercial source.

Roasting of zinc concentrate at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, (E.Z.), is carried out in two fluid bed roasters capable of treating 450000 tonne/yr, or sufficient for the output of 220000 tonne of salable zinc. The furnaces were constructed by Lurgi, Australia, to the basic design developed by Vieille Montagne Company of Balen, Belgium. The advantages of fluid bed roasting include a higher metallurgical efficiency in sulphur oxidation from a feed which does not require any pre-grinding, mechanical reliabil- ity through the absence of any moving parts within the furnace and the capability of being scaled up to a large unit.
