Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2·H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can then be further converted with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. However, present literature has paid little attention to how to minimize the consumption of reagents in this recovery process. In the current study, a process model was built using HSC Sim software, and metamodeling of the simulated flowsheet was conducted with the design of experiments (DOE), after which the basic functionality of the flowsheet was verified by experimental work, starting from sulfuric acid leaching of spent batteries. As the process is based on chemical circulation internally in the process, the objective was to investigate the accumulation of the elements in solution, specifically Na+ , K+ , SO4 2− ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH conversion step. It was found out that metamodeling could be utilized in obtaining first estimate of the process behavior, prior to any experiments. Flowsheet functionality with circulated solution was confirmed, obtaining at best 96.9% La recovery.

"When l hear - I normally remember 10 percent When I hear and see - I can remember 15 to 25 percent When I hear, see, and do - I usually remember up to 50 percent" While this is not a truism in relation to each and every individual; on the average, this is the case. If we use this as a premise in training operator and maintenance personnel, then it must be obvious that we can't rely on a mere presentation, even one which includes the needed classroom participation and/or hands on work, to do a thorough job and to make this personnel totally proficient - 100 percent proficient. We have to have some other device some other means to make this a continuing process, a process wherein the people can grow in knowledge while performing their normal duties. We have to feel that the words "normal duties" are the key to the whole program. If you would ask a crusher operator what his duty is, he might say "To run this crusher so that we produce 250 tons per hour of a minus 13mm (minus 1/2 ") product." A maintenance man could say "To fix the unit when there is a problem." Both of these answers are legitimate but, they are only a part of the total picture. In order for each of these individuals to do the best job, he must know not just the specifics about the machine he works with or on - he must know the interrelation of all the machinery in the crushing circuit - how the efficiency of each machine affects the others - why a minor problem on one piece of equipment can generate a major problem for another unit which follows it or precedes it. In short, you cannot separate machine operation and maintenance from the application of the equipment in the crushing circuit - and obtaining this knowledge must be a part of the normal duty of crushing plant personnel. As an example a crusher - any crusher - is designed to crush oversize material. It is not designed to accept feed which is already at or less than the required product size. If sized material goes to the crusher, increase wear results by using the crusher as a chute or the crushing chamber can be clogged up with the fines. This latter point is particularly true with cone crushers, especially in the third (Short Head) stage of crushing. When a Gyradisc is used (fourth stage crushing) it is even more critical that the product be removed before the material goes to the crusher. The crusher cannot control this - the screen ahead of the crusher does. The screen must be of adequate size and be functioning properly to allow the crusher to work at optimum. Screening is both an art and a science. Since there are so many variables which affect the output of the screen, it is always best to have a screen which is larger than the sizing calculations dictate. The screens are the most important elements in the circuit. Without screens, specification materials cannot be made and the size of the screen will ultimately aid or hinder your ability to get the most production possible out of the plant. The investigations reported herein comprise preliminary studies to evaluate large scale mining systems adaptable to the thicker oil shale deposits in the deeper central portion of the Piceance Creek Basin. The studies include an evaluation of the geology, hydrology and resources of the Basin., evaluation of a potential prototype mine site, synthesis of rock mechanics data on Green River Formation oil shale, selection and preliminary design and cost evaluation of six potential mining systems and a ranking analysis to aid in selecting the most promising system. Results of the ranking analysis indicate the following four systems to be most promising for large scale underground oil shale mining: - Chamber and pillar (using spent shale backfill) - Sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill - Sublevel stoping with full subsidence - Block caving with LHD's Recommendations for phase II are to investigate the above systems in greater detail, refine present cost data, and perform economic evaluations of oil shale mining using these systems.

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled sur¬face hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diam¬eter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a verti¬cal depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 m (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government's state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

Cyprus Shoshone is an underground coal mine in southern Wyoming owned by Cyprus Coal Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. To date, seven longwall panels have been extracted from the pitching seam under increasing depth of cover from 150 ft to 1200 ft. The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology, rock mechanics needs identification, design, testing and successful application of the current headgate/tailgate cribbing system. The immediate roof of the Shoshone is unique in that the first 50 ft of lithology is interbedded mudstones. The mudstone is slickensided, highly friable and has characteristics of unconsolidated fill relative to self-spanning and beaming abilities. Finite element modelling analysis of the overall geomechanical environment showed the mudstone to yield under applied longwall abutment stress. Roof bolt system design methodology also pinpointed the relative weakness of the mudstone roof. In-mine entry vertical convergence and weight response from the mudstone identified the need to design a crib which had superior weight capacity over a wide range of convergence. Design of a structure ensued to achieve the superior strength properties of wood parallel to the grain and the displacement properties of wood perpendicular to the grain. Testing of the prototype structure along with other alternative wooden cribs was done at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation facility in the Denver Federal Center, Colorado. The test results verified the design. Crib placement pattern was chosen to maximize support with a confined core crib under the high convergence area. The design has been successfully installed in over 5,000 ft of headgate entry in the 11 left panel.

THE mines operated by the Compañia de Real del Monte y Pachuca, Pachuca, Mexico, are in two districts, the Pachuca, and Real del Monte. The principal area of mineralization is within a rectangle roughly 10 miles from east to west and 6 miles from north to south. It contains a number of veins from 2 to 20 ft. wide, which are exploited by this mining company. The scattered position of the producing mines led to the construction of two mills between 1906 and 1908; the Loreto mill, in Pachuca, averaged 2600 tons daily, and the Guerrero mill, in Real del Monte, milled 1270 tons daily. On Feb. 1, 1929, the management decided to enlarge the Loreto mill to take the combined tonnage of both mills at that time. This economic measure required the centralization of ore delivery, which would also afford a material saving in the cost of ore transport. The centralization would give the company the following advantages over the former system of operation: 1. Beneficiation at a single mill, closer to source of materials and supplies than the abandoned- Guerrero mill. The refinery is, also in the Loreto patio. 2. Ore delivery to surface at one point (San Juan Pachuca shaft) instead of at four. 3. Elimination of aerial tramways. To show what would be required to effect this centralization, it is necessary to describe the means by which the ore was delivered to the two mills, prior to centralization. This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é evidenciar os resultados do incremento de superfície específica obtidos pelo roller press da Usina 3 da Samarco Mineração S.A.. A metodologia utilizada baseou-se em informações de projeto do equipamento e análises estatísticas aplicadas ao processo de prensagem bem como o desenvolvimento de um indicador de eficiência imune às variações de qualidade do minério. Basicamente esse trabalho buscou otimizar as variáveis de processo capazes de gerar melhores resultados de incremento na superfície específica do minério. (Como resultado do trabalho foi verificado um aumento considerável nos resultados de eficiência no incremento de superfície específica).

The JORC Code does not specify a definition for ælevel of confidenceÆ. The common approach in the mining industry is to use a certain drill spacing or number of data samples to classify resources by the confidence categories. Another approach includes application of the quantitative geostatistical criteria for non-subjective and consistent definition of the resource categories. This approach, which has become increasingly popular in the mining industry, provides a quantitative measure of the resource estimation uncertainty. In this study, uncertainties associated with the different drilling grids at the Weipa bauxite deposit (Queensland, Australia) have been modelled using conditional simulation methodology. Criteria used at Weipa for defining resource categories are as follows: mineralisation can be classified as a Measured Resource if tonnage and grade of its volume representing three months of production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability, ie two standard deviations); and mineralisation can be classified as an Indicated Resource if grade and tonnage of its volume representing annual production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability). Several different grids have been created by subsampling the drill hole database. The studied variables include Al2O3, SiO2, thickness of the bauxite seam and location of the footwall contact. The variables have been modelled by sequential Gaussian simulation. Based on this study the following drill spacings have been recommended: Measured Resources û 150 m by 150 m, Indicated Resources û 300 m by 300 m.

Eddy current separators are increasingly used by the auto shredder operators to produce higher grade of nonferrous metal concentrate for recycling. While this increases the unit price of the concentrate, metal losses through inefficient metal recovery quickly offset the price differential. We show how to optimize the eddy current separation system at the shredder to maximize mate- rial throughput, nonferrous metal recovery and grade of the nonferrous metal concentrate.

Roughness of a discontinuity may be an important factor influencing shear strength of the discontinuity. Traditionally, determining the roughness of a discontinuity surface and providing a numerical measure of the roughness has required considerable effort or specialised equipment. The development of new 3D imaging tools that are easy to use has provided effective fast and accurate means of creating 3D surface models from which roughness measurements can be readily obtained. These new techniques are versatile enabling a user to measure roughness along any desired profile and at any resolution up to the limit of the spatial subtense of a measurement on the discontinuity surface. This paper primarily reviews extensions to the use of 3D imaging that enable the measurement of roughness. Additionally we provide some examples of the measurements and examine some of the issues associated with extracting measures from the spatial data that will support estimation of shear strength.

"The mechanical properties of RSR anode alloys (lead-calcium-tin, 009+ and lead-strontium-tin) were investigated as a function of time with an objective of developing lead anodes for use in high temperature electrolytic processes such as in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning. At a temperature of 70 oC, the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-calcium-tin (PbCaSn) alloy currently used in copper electrowinning decreased gradually while the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-strontium-tin (PbSrSn) decreased relatively quickly and stabilized at low strength levels. Cast PbSrSn started off as the weakest alloy but its properties remained stable with time. Rolled RSR 009+ anode alloy showed improvement in ageing properties over the other alloys tested. However, its mechanical properties did not stabilize in the study timeframe of 284 days. Further investigations are planned to study the effect of alloying elements on mechanical properties of RSR 009+ anode alloy over several years as a function of time at 70 oC. The mechanical properties will be evaluated to determine the time at which they stabilize. Comparative plant trials with rolled RSR PbCaSn and RSR 009+ will also be performed in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning tankhouses to determine their mechanical and electrochemical performance at temperatures of 65-75 oC.INTRODUCTIONLead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in the electrowinning of copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and manganese from sulfate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day PbCaSn alloys for copper and PbAg and PbCaAg alloys for zinc electrowinning (Prengaman, Ellis and Mirza, 2010). It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new lead anode alloys and production processes for lead anodes to be used in copper electrowinning, the industry still has some unresolved issues. These relate to the necessity of having higher mechanical properties especially for the lead anodes in liberator cells in copper electrorefining and for cobalt and nickel electrowinning as these tankhouses operate at temperatures of 65-75 oC compared to 40-45 oC in case of copper electrowinning."

Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.
