This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report is based on costs and data developed and furnished by the operators of the mines visited. The author is greatly indebted to the officials and staff members at these mines for their cooperation and assistance.

During the spring and summer of 1993 the largest pipeline in Tennessee was installed as part of the upgrading of Nashville's sewage needs through the year 2035. This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Special projects required special equipment as this project was safely and quickly installed.

?Wyoming bentonite? has become almost a world-wide trade mark for high quality sodium bentonite. Although bentonite is produced in more than a dozen U.S. states the largest producing area covers Wyoming and adjacent parts of Montana and South Dakota. Bentonite was originally known as Taylorite and later renamed Bentonite by Dr. Sam Knight, the State Geologist of Wyoming. The new name came from the Fort Benton shale member of the Mowry Formation. Bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of the montmorillonite group of minerals. Since bentonite has good ion exchange capabilities, various cat-ions are easily replaced. These cations are usually calcium and sodium; however, magnesium, lithium, potassium, and others can be exchanged. One way of classifying the clay is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium as the dominant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling properties than sodium varieties.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the factors that cause agglomeration of lignite by freezing during winter shipment and sought methods to avoid it. Tests showed that lignite may be freezeproofed by removal of the relatively small quantity of moisture involved in forming the frost crystals which cement particles together, or by controlling the crystal characteristics. Adding dried lignite fines proved to be an effective and superior freezeproofing method. Commercial adoption of this method has been successful.

Granite Construction Company operates a rock quarry in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains of central California indicated in Figure 1. Open pit methods are used to mine decomposed granite which is processed to produce sand, gravel, decorative rock and asphalt. The quarry is located near the village of Felton about five miles inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and is near the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz and several California State Parks. The area is heavily forested and is considered by residents to be environmentally sensitive. Because of the scenic beauty of the area and proximity to the San Francisco Bay area, a project such as a quarry receives the attention of regional residents and environmental organizations.

The purpose of this publication is to discuss grounding mediums and the phases of grounding related to corrosion and cathodic protection. The material presented is believed to contribute to a better understanding of this subject. It also indicates more effective methods of reducing corrosion damage to metal structures and equipment in the mining industry by cathodic protection. The authors do not intend to discuss technical aspects but rather to explain the general principles of this method of inhibiting corrosion. The relationship between soil resistivity, protective grounding, and corrosion is presented. Corrosion causes the annual loss of billions of dollars; which can be greatly reduced. Losses in the mineral industry can be excessive owing to the extensive use of direct-current power, the presence of considerable dampness, and the frequent, indiscriminate use of dissimilar metals.

QCM?s pellet plant, located in Port-Cartier, Quebec, produces up to 8.6 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Four different types are produced: three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the installation of new process equipment to improve the reducibility of direct reduction pellets (DR pellet). The findings, the equipment selection and some post start-up modifications are presented. This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces. A good DR pellet has to meet strict chemical, physical and metallurgical specifications. An important metallurgical property is its ability to release oxygen when exposed to reducing gases. Considering that the market for DR pellets is expanding and being aware that reducibility is critical for our clients, a program to improve the latter was undertaken. Test work showed that one factor which has a negative effect on reducibility is the proportion of particles larger than 75 microns. Knowing that the best way to reduce the amount of coarse particles was to close our open grinding circuits, we began evaluating the most suitable classification equipment applicable to our process operations. We settled on hydro-classifiers based on their very sharp cut and their low operating costs. In light of the hydro-classifiers performance it was also decided to replace the hydro-cyclones of an already closed circuit.

The movement for Federal endowment of engineering and industrial research was revived early in the present Congress by the introduction of two bills into the Senate. The first bill, introduced by Senator Smith of Georgia, provides for the establishment of an engineering experiment station in each state under the direction of and in connection with some university, engineering school, or land-grant college. The state legislature of each state is authorized to designate the institution best equipped to conduct the work but wherever the land-grant college has facilities approximately equal to those of the other institutions of the state, it shall be designated. All designations of institutions are made subject to the approval of the Secretary of Commerce. The Secretary of Commerce is authorized to secure practical uniformity of methods, and efficiency and economical expenditure of funds by indicating such lines of work as shall seem to him important from a military; naval, industrial or national standpoint, but the responsibility for the initiation and conduct of research shall rest with the individual engineering experiment stations. Uniform standards of research are further provided for by making each experiment station a depository of the Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Standards, and the work of each station shall conform to the standards established by the U. S. Government through said bureau, which may whenever practicable utilize the facilities of the station for the prosecution of research.

Environmental problem is the major concern for any industry and there is a great need to that along green lines. Sangam Dairy being one of the most famous and wide spread Dairies in India, produces wide spectrum of milk products. The BOD levels of effluent water of this industry with MIF treatment were found to be around 100 ppm. Lot of research has been expended in the past to bring down the BOD levels to bare minimum. The main objective of the present study is to minimize the BOD level to the required level stipulated by environmental standards by employing various seeding materials. For this purpose microbes like Bacillus Subtiles, Pseudomonas, Aspergillas, Staphylococcus, and Pencilium have been employed and BOD levels were analyzed. Various Reagents, solutions with different dilution levels have been successfully prepared. Initial and final Dissolved Oxygen levels were determined before and after incubation. From the DO data, BOD was evaluated for all samples and comparison analysis of various seeding material was carried to suggest the efficient seeding material for the ETP plant. In the process, solutions of different dilutions have been prepared using difficult reagents. These samples are treated with above mentioned microbes and BOD levels are estimated. It has been observed that staphylococcus and Pseudomonas proved to be the best seeding materials. When there microbes have employed BOD levels fall to less than 10 and 20 ppm respectively

A review of publicly available coronial inquiries into fatalities that have occurred within the resources sector since the year 2000 reveals that a loss of corporate memory has been a contributing factor in 40 per cent of these accidents (National Coroners Information Service, 2010, Appendix B). With the highest levels of employee turnover within the Australian economy, increasingly complex operations and an ageing workforce, the management of corporate memory within the Australian resources industry poses a significant and often unrecognised safety risk.    The North Parks airblast of 1999 is used as a case study to highlight how corporate memory loss poses a significant hazard to resources projects and how such incidents will continue to occur if corporate memory is not effectively managed. Best practice from other industries is discussed to demonstrate how knowledge management systems can effectively work. This paper discusses how systems can be put in place within the geographically diverse resources sector, and how at the heart of any knowledge management system a culture of knowledge management needs to exist within an organisation.   The paper then discusses the importance of retaining key personnel and utilises findings from primary survey data collated in 2009 to show the size of the retention problem within the industry. From the data possible solutions to retaining key staff are proposed.   Finally the large and increasing role of contractors and consultants within the industry is discussed and methods of managing their knowledge are proposed.

,Measurements are reported for the thermal conductivity of four heat-resistant alloys which were measured at the National Bureau of Standards. Data are given for two samples of AISI Type 316 stainless steel covering a combined temperature range from -150° to + 800°C. The thermal conductivities of three samples of AISI Type 347 were measured over the temperature range from -150° to +150C. Thermal conductivity values are given for Carpenter 20 stainless steel from 100" to 800" C. Data are given for Inconel 702, in both the solution-annealed and the age-hardened condition, over the temperature range from -150" to +800C. SINCE 1958 the National Bureau of Standards, at the request of other government agencies or private laboratories, has carried out measurements of the thermal conductivity of a number of metals and alloys. This paper presents available thermal conductivity data obtained in this way on samples of four heat-resistant alloys. The data presented for Carpenter 20* stainless steel are, to the best of our knowledge, the only thermal conductivity values which have been reported for this alloy to date. Although thermal conductivity values for AISI stainless steels 316 and 347 have been reported by previous investigators, the present data are believed to be of particular interest because, for each alloy, the effect on thermal conductivity of small changes in chemical composition can be observed. SINCE the discovery, of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost' absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystal-line metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. The laboratory investigations which are necessary to evaluate the mineral processing effectiveness usually include density separation of narrow size fraction of the feed and one of the products. In each size - density fractions the content of valuable mineral has to be determined. These data and yield in each size - density fraction can be specified by a matrix of partition coefficients. They are counterparts of recoveries. These coefficients can be compared with the mean recoveries at each density or size fraction or the total recovery, to determine which density - size fractions are processed in the best or worst way. The basic categories are: vector of metal content l _i 1711, 7t2, òòò, ltM I ò vector of particle size distribution x = I d1, d2, ..., dN I ò matrix of partition coefficients P11, P12, Pi N P _ P21, P22, ..., P2 N PM1 PM2..., PMN These three conceptions allow one to determine all the basic metallurgical parameters of a mineral processing unit. Losses of valuable mineral are connected with: ò mineralogical composition of the ore (types of minerals, their properties, dissemination, crystallochemical affinity, type and properties of gangue minerals), ò applied technology and technical equipment (beneficiation as a stochastic process, processing methods, process control, intergrowth liberation, water quality). Examples of application of the analytical method proposed are given for zinc - lead and coal processing plants.

Abstract - Coarse gold-bearing veins are characterized by high grades that are localized and erratic. Effective sampling of coarse gold-bearing veins is difficult because of the low concentration and erratic nature of the gold particles. Diamond drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however, grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development (including close-spaced sampling, bulk sampling, and trial mining). Comparison between surface and underground drilling, underground linear/panel and bulk sampling indicate that drilling and linear/ panel samples generally understate bulk sample grades. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade. It is unlikely that anything above an Inferred Resource category can be estimated from surface drilling alone, and at best the grade will only be a global estimate. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Resources. Closely spaced development and bulk sampling is likely to be the only way to determine Reserves. The resource estimation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand both geological and grade continuity. Traditionally, grade interpolation has been undertaken using classical methods, though more recently, computer-based block modelling techniques have been used with some success. Three case histories are presented, documenting the problems of estimating resources in coarse gold-bearing veins and the practical ways in which they were approached.

The Altair Hydrochloride Pigment Process is a new ?third route?, besides the established high-temperature chloride process and the older sulfate process, to manufacture TiO2 pigment from ilmenite ore. It has been tested at a scale of 5 t/day feed. The ore concentrate is digested in high-acid, high total chloride solution (+/- 39% Cl). Titanium and iron both go into solution. Iron is separated as FeCl2 crystals after reduction and cooling. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, high-Ti stream. It is spray-hydrolyzed to produce a TiO2 hydrate and further calcined with additives into high-quality pigment. HCl solutions generated by pyrohydrolysis and spray hydrolysis are treated by pressure-swing distillation to regenerate HCl gas for re-injection into the digestion reactor. All chloride streams are recycled. Recent work has concentrated on optimization, particularly in 3 areas: - Solvent extraction: a new organic mixture, including a new diluent, makes it possible to work at room temperature, to avoid TiO2 hydrolysis problems and to improve phase disengagement and impurity separation. - Pigment finishing: a systematic study of the parameters involved, followed by long runs in the best conditions confirm pigment quality. - Flow sheet optimization: innovative modifications of the conditions of spray hydrolysis and pyrohydrolysis, combined with re-routing of streams achieve significant energy savings. A 100 t/year pilot plant including these features as well as other process improvements is under construction.

THE Cromwell 'Pool has been the outstanding development in Oklahoma during the year 1924. . Tonkawa contributed the deep "Slick Sand" bit apparently its 'peak has been reached and like other pools producing from below the Mississippi lime its decline' mill be rapid. After reaching a daily production of 67,000 bbl., the Cromwell Pool is declining because of a lull in -new completions, but a mile extension has revived activity and an area equal to that of the present producing' area is under development and will cause an increase in the present production of 38,000 bbl. This pool is seven months old, has three dry holes in one hundred twenty completions and is actually defined only on the southern extremity. This area has been one of the chief contributors to the .over-production of high gravity oil in the Mid- continent fields and will be such' for the remainder of ' the year. 1924 and first part of 1925.

FROM the first days on the Norman beaches to the last days on the Elbe the Army Engineers of World War II lived off the countryside for the great bulk of the construction supplies needed for the fulfillment of their ultimate mission-to keep the army moving. To accomplish this end, vast tonnages of rock, timber, and steel were required in the construction of roads, railroads, and bridges. Combat Engineer battalions operated quarries under shell fire as a routine matter. An Engineer forestry company was decimated while cutting bridge timber on the Siegfried line. Oneof the more spectacular feats of the Army Engineers in obtaining construction materials was the operation of the Hadir Steel Works during the fall and winter o f 1944.

The effect of high solids concentration and coarse particle sizes (d50 ranges 90?300 µm) on the viscosity of a suspension of water and silica sand was investigated. The experiments were designed to include conditions that have been tested by other authors and those encountered in the operation of tumbling mills. The rheological data was measured using a tube rheometer with operating pseudo shear rates of up to 1500 s-1. The rheograms obtained depicted dilatant behaviour. The Otswald-de Waele, Bingham, Herschel-Buckley and Casson models were fitted to the experimental data. The Herschel-Buckely model, which approximates the yield point and gives an indication of the shear thinning or shear thickening behaviour of the suspension, was found to provide the best description of the flow curves for all slurries. The Herschel-Buckely model was then used to determine the apparent viscosity of all the tests. The apparent viscosity and yield stress increased with solids concentration and particle size at the different pseudo shear rates. The increase in slurry viscosity with solids concentration was attributed to increased frequency of particle-particle interactions. The increase in slurry viscosity with particle size was attributed to increased inertial effects. At low shear rates the sand slurry exhibited shear thinning behaviour for all solids concentrations. At higher shear rates above 1000 s-1the high solids concentration suspensions exhibited a transition from shear thinning to a shear thickening behaviour.

The Bureau of Mines developed cost estimates fur the disposal of phosphate rock washer slimes by pond settling, from a study of the method used at the International Minerals a Chemical Corp., Moralyn Phosphate Operations, Polk County, Fla. Data were obtained by basing phosphate production and slime generation statistics on plant capacity rather than on actual company records. Cost estimates, which were prepared as a guide in evaluating alternative disposal methods and in identifying needed areas of research, could be applicable to any Florida plant using the same disposal method. To conserve mineral resources and to improve environmental conditions, the Bureau recommends further research directed toward developing alternative methods of disposal, including the recovery of water and P205 values from the slimes.
