"With Inco recording record profits over the past year, most people have forgotten the painful years of the last recession/depression when Inco was losing up to a million dollars a day for a short period . While high nickel prices have contributed to the exceptional recent profits, the real achievements stem from the tremendous advances in productivity and cost improvements that make Inco one of the lowest cost nickel producers.Some of the major advances in productivity have occurred in the mines. The establishment of Mining Research Departments in both Thompson and Copper Cliff in 1979/80 provided the stimulus and the opportunity to dedicate personnel to specific research projects, on a full-time basis; and more particularly to concentrate on the efficiency of the total mine system. The Copper Cliff North Mine was brought back into production as a research mine dedicated to the development and testing of new mining methods and equipment. A shop facility known as the ""Murray Shop"" was set up as the centre of innovation for the development and construction of prototype equipment required for new bulk mining methods. While other expenditures were being curtailed , investment in mining research was being increased. An early success was an ""in the hole"" drill that could be broken down into small components to access even the remotest sectors of a mine to convert labour intensive undercut-and-fill mining to "" vertical crater retreat "" , VCR, bulk mining. A new mine manufacturing company-Continuous Mining Systems-was incorporated with the objective of building innovative mining equipment, with strong focus on automated continuous sytems. Continuous Mining Systems has now grown to a $25 million per year business. With these synergistic thrusts, the VCR bulk mining method was implemented in all of the Ontario Division mines, raising the percentage of ore mined by bulk mining techniques from 320/0 in 1981 to over 90% today. Coupled with re-designed job responsibilities, sup- ported by appropriate training, mine productivity more than doubled. It was discovered that VCR mining could be adapted to the narrower Thompson mine ores with identical improvements in productivity. Development of the Thompson Open Pit North had an additional favourable impact on production cost s in Thompson. The timing of the open pit development could not have been better. It permitted Inco to rapidly increase production at high productivity and low cost, in years of record demand and prices."

The need for more efficient utilization of labor in the metal-mining industry has been the subject of several recent editorials in the mining press, and one attractive possibility for such improvement lies in the designing of future milling plants particularly with economy of manpower in mind. We are accustomed to think of mill design as the selection and coordinated arrangement of process equipment, but if labor is to be efficiently utilized it must be given early consideration in planning the new mill. There are three good reasons for economizing in labor: (I) to reduce costs, not only in the form of wages but also in housing, hospital, welfare, and other obligations that a company accepts when a new man is added to the payroll; (2) to prepare for recurrent periods of manpower shortage, during which a well-designed plant can manage to get along with skeleton crews; (3) because a milling plant that must depend upon an inordinately large labor force for its operation and maintenance is certain to be inefficient in other respects, for many of the shortcomings in design that make necessary the excessive use of labor are generally not corrected merely by having too many men. A simple example of this is a poorly designed ore-feeding system : if this is inadequate to the extent that one man must be constantly unclogging feed chutes, it may help the situation to put two men or three at this task instead of one, but the feed rate will still be inconstant. First of the factors that affect labor saving is the location of the mill. This is often determined by transportation costs alone, and as a result the mill may be placed close to the mine regardless of the nature of the terrain. The designer must then adapt his layout to the conditions, favorable or not. This happens often at small properties, where capital investment may seem more important than operating expense. In most instances, however, a mill site carefully selected for the advantages it gives the designer in laying out the plant is the most economical in the long run, even if it involves a slight increase in cost of ore haulage. Given some freedom of choice, the design engineer may be able to find just the piece of ground that provides the proper gradient for the needs of the flowsheet, permits installation of essential yards and trackage, and perhaps supplies an excellent site for a tailing dam. Further justification for having placed the mill not too close to the mine sometimes emerges only years later as an opportunity to treat ores from other properties. When it is known from the beginning that the new mill will serve a number of scattered mines, a free choice of mill site is naturally stimulated. In the current issue of Link-Belt News is this quotation: "Advancing waves of other people's progress sweep over the unchanging man and wash him out." As we look over the industrial world today we are struck by the many waves which are sweeping over backward industries. Mergers are being consummated in all lines of endeavor. General Motors are making radios and the Bendix Brake Company are making airplanes. Railroads which twenty years ago were called to account by the Federal Government for their efforts to form combinations are today being ordered to combine. But what is of immediate concern to the coal industry is the fact that there is now in existence or in project a total of 3,641 miles of pipe lines to carry natural gas to most of the country's industrial centers. This is the wave of progress which is sweeping toward you and me. If we are to grasp the significance of these many changes, we must widen our vision so that we may learn some- thing from 'the other fellow's experience. The first lesson is that cost of production alone is not a measure of profit. It is an interesting fact that the production of an article represents a definite loss until that article has been sold for a price in excess of its total cost, and the money is in the hands of the producer. If this is true, then the selling price is more important than the production cost.

Eimco Great Britain, a division of Baker Mining Equipment Company, was contracted to develop a hardrock tunnelling machine in conjunction with British Coal. The objective: a machine to cut rock up to 170 MPa compressive strength yet retaining the flexibility of roadheader type machines. This flexibility to encompass mobility, wide range of excavation shapes and sizes, simplicity of design and use, compact size, and efficient cutting operation. Current roadheaders operating in hard material are characterized by: 1. Severe machine vibration 2. Bouncing of the boom away from the rock 3. Very high pick wear 4. Inability to sump head in bad floor conditions The reasons for this poor performance can be attributed in part to: 1. High speed of cutting head rotation 2. Inability to hold boom against rock while cutting variable hardness strata. To overcome the problems described, a new articulation method was developed utilizing four hydraulic rams to "lock" the boom in position on one axis and four hydraulic motors to rotate the boom for cutting via a turret arrangement. The slide mounted turret is hydraulically advanced for sumping into the face, independent of the machine base. To transfer cutting forces back to the rock, the machine base is held rigidly in the excavation by floor to roof or side to side rams. A cutting head mounted on the boom rotates at very low speed, but with very high torque.

This report describes the development of a system which modifies an existing fly ash-foam remote mine sealing technique to make it capable of impounding water in a fire zone. The modification involves blending equal quantities of fly ash and bentonite to form the bulk of the seal, and blending a thin layer of fly ash and Huron Regulated Set Portland Cement (RSPC) as a coating. The modification replaces the pure fly ash approach, but continues to use a froth foam topping to complete the seal. The modified material system is implemented with minimal complexity by adapting a "Y" connector to the existing delivery system. Each bulk hauler (fly ash and bentonite, or RSPC) will pump into one leg of the 'Y'; and the blending will be controlled by two pinch valves. The development effort has involved an evaluation of potential material systems by using small sample, quarter scale, and full head tests. The small sample tests measured the basic properties of a large number of selected material combinations. Property measurements included capillarity, permeability, shrinkage, and shear strength. As a result of these tests, particular combinations of fly ash-bentonite and fly ash-cement were selected for scale model testing in a 1 /4 scale test facility. These tests simulated, in a scaled manner, the water rise and total head which would be experienced by a seal. The tests indicated that shrinkage in the fly ash-cement combination would always result in leakage; whereas, fly ash-bentonite mixes were impervious to water.

INTRODUCTION Rock slope stability research has been in progress for the past four years at the Royal School of Mines in London under the sponsorship of a consortium of 23 companies* with interests in open pit mining. This paper reviews the principal aims and achievements of this research project. In order to assist the reader in following these details, the basic philosophy underlying the formulation and direction of this research project is discussed. DISTRIBUTION OF RESPONSIBILITY In open pit mining, the economic necessity of keeping waste rock removal to a minimum generally means that the mine slopes have to be excavated to the steepest possible slope angle. On the other hand, excessive steepening of these slopes can induce failures, which may negate the economic benefits that have been aimed at and which may also result in loss of life and damage to equipment. Consequently, where slope failures are likely to prove to be a problem, an evaluation of the stability of the slopes to be created should be included as part of the overall pit design. How is the stability of a rock slope evaluated? When this question was examined, during discussions on the research policy to be followed at the Royal School of Mines, it was clear that relatively few satisfactory techniques were available in a form that would be comprehensible and therefore useful to the practical mining engineer. It was recognised that the research project must be directed towards two distinct aims: a) The evaluation of existing techniques for rock slope stability analysis and the provision of new techniques where these existing methods were found to be inadequate and b) The presentation of the results of this evaluation and research in a form that would be useful to engineers without specialist training in rock mechanics. It was soon realized that a university based research team, however large and efficient, could not achieve these aims without the co-operation and assistance of mining engineers,

In recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. The Purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing 18 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic I5-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wet-tability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. In January 1989, Western Mining Corporation (WMC) acquired the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward orebodies and associated infrastructure from the Agnew Mining Company (AMC). AMC had closed the operation in August 1986 and it had been on care and maintenance since that time. To return the operation to full production as quickly as possible it was planned to mine the Rocky's Reward orebody by opencut mining and treat this ore whilst the underground Perseverance workings were rehabilitated. Removal of overburden from Rocky's Reward thus commenced immediately with a target of April 1989 for delivery of the first ore to the concentrator. Extensive rehabilitation and upgrading of the concentrator commenced in late January, and continued in stages for an 18 month period. The first stage consisted of overhauling all existing equipment and completing a crusher upgrade commenced by AMC prior to the mine closure. During this period, it was necessary to recruit a workforce and re-establish all the required support structure. In late April the plant commenced commissioning trials on mullock. The first ore was crushed on the 11th May 1989 and concentrate produced the following day. From May 1989 to June 1990 the plant was producing nickel concentrate whilst further upgrading continued. During this period, the flotation capacity was tripled by installation of a bank of eight Wemco 144L flotation cells in rougher-scavenger duties and two 12 metre by 2 metre diameter columns in cleaning duties. The existing vacuum drum filters were replaced by two Larox PF32 pressure filters, eliminating the need for solar drying and allowing the flash drier to be fed direct from the filters. These, along with a major borefield expansion and further work to the crusher increased the nominal plant capacity from 600,000 to 1,000,000 t/yr. The plant achieved the 1,000,000 t/yr rate in April 1990.

Since 1980, more than 40 miners have lost their lives by being trapped and suffocating in stock-piles, bins, silos, and similar facilities. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is concerned about these accidents, most of which could be prevented if management and miners appreciated the hazard. In February 1986, the coal industry had a suffocation accident that drew national attention. A group of engineers were standing on a coal stockpile. It gave way under their feet. Five of the engineers were buried in the coal and suffocated. As with all fatal accidents, MSHA investigated the cause of this tragedy. I also asked my staff to look into the history of similar accidents. I found out it is rare to have multiple fatalities due to suffocation in material. But, over the years, there has been a long series of individual fatalities from this type of accident. Here are some examples. In Oct. 1985, a coal mine employee in Virginia entered a hopper to collect a coal sample. The feeders were started while he was standing in the hopper. He sank into the coal and suffocated. In Sept. 1985, an employee at a Texas sand company climbed onto a surge pile, to check a problem with sand flow. When other employees found him, the sand had swallowed him. Only his face and one hand were showing. Though the victim's face was clear of the sand, he suffocated before rescuers could free him. Many people do not realize you can suffocate in this kind of situation, though your head is free. Every time you exhale, the material has room to shift and press harder against your chest. Then you have less room to inhale. If this goes on long enough, it gets to the point where you cannot inhale at all. That is what happened to the victim in this accident. In May 1985, a plant operator at a Wisconsin sand and gravel operation purposely slid into the drawhole of a surge pile. He tried to break up large rocks that were clogging the drawpoint. Material piled on the side of the surge pile slid down and buried him. The operator was wearing a safety belt and line. But he was covered by 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) of material and could not be pulled free. This incident illustrates another point. A safety line can help. But it is not enough. Workers should never put themselves in a position where loose material can fall on them from above. In Jan. 1985, a young Utah coal miner was waiting for a ride home from a co-worker whose job was at the tipple. A jam developed in the coal bin. The men could not clear the jam from the outside. So the young miner jumped into the bin. He started digging with a shovel at the toe of the coal pile. It caved in on him and he suffocated. The young miner had only three months of mining experience. He had not been trained for work around the coal bin. Since 1980, 16 coal miners and 26 nonmetal miners have lost their lives in loose-material suffocation accidents. Suffocation accidents occur in many areas around mines - bins, hoppers, stockpiles, surge piles, and silos, among others. One recent accident occurred at a surface coal mine in Illinois. The victim was walking over an area that had been drilled and blasted the week before. He fell into a void that had been crusted over with earth. He too suffocated. And many materials have been involved in suffocation accidentscoal, crushed stone, sand, salt, different kinds of ore, ammonium nitrate pellets used in blasting, and a powdery byproduct of iron ore milling called calcine. In addition to fatal accidents, there are near misses. We do not know how many. Most of them are not reported. A person who gets trapped in material, but is rescued, is usually unhurt. MSHA sometimes hears about these accidents by chance, or because they are reported in the local media. We do know that near misses are happening far more often

The present-day Northumberland gold mine is one of the deposits generally characterized as a Carlin-type occurrence. It lies at the crest of the Toquima Range in Nye County near the center of Nevada. Gold mineralization occurs in two modes, in argillaceous and in silicified limestones, and is generally very fine-grained or micron gold. The Northumberland district has had a history that is typical of many western gold districts: minor production prior to World War II and intermittent exploration thereafter until a combination of geological insight, improved economics, and the advent of heap leach technology created the Northumberland gold mine. Nye County, Nevada, was sparsely populated and little explored in the early years of the settlement of the west; the Northumberland district was not established until 1866. Initial interest was in silver and the district operated as a very small producer for the next seventy years. The disseminated gold occurrences in silicified limestones were recognized and Northumberland Mining Co. was organized to develop the property in the late 1930s. Northumberland Mining Co. actually conducted drilling operations (over 200 drill holes) and mined from small open pits in the silicified limestones. They ultimately produced almost 936 kg (33,000 oz) gold before being shut down by War Production Board Order L-208 in 1942. After World War II gold mining activities were essentially nil for over a decade due to the poor economics of gold production. The property was, however, a known gold producer and attracted recurrent exploration attention. About 45 holes were drilled under the direction of Peter Joralemon for private interests between 1959 and 1963. Next Kerr McGee drilled about 25 holes during 1963 and 1964. Some- what later, in 1968, Homestake drilled 20 holes. The property was then acquired by Idaho Mining Co. which drilled about 30 more holes between 1972 and 1974. By this time the Northumberland mine was becoming somewhat shopworn with over 300 holes drilled. Interest in gold prospects was increasing substantially in Nevada, how- ever, due to rising gold prices in late 1974, and several companies were interested in continuing exploration at Northumberland. In 1975 Cyprus Mines Corp. was successful in obtaining a joint venture arrangement with Idaho Mining Co. for further exploration and development of the property. The overall Cyprus exploration program was under the direction of James G. Hansen, Vice President Exploration. The geologist recommending acquisition of Northumberland was Peter E. Chapman who reported to Joseph E. Worthington, Manager of U.S. Exploration for Cyprus. The basis for selection of the Northumberland mine as an exploration target for Cyprus by Chapman was essentially prior knowledge of regional and 16cal geology and of the mine. Exploration for the next few years was directed by Chapman under the supervision of Worthington. During 1975 and 1976 rotary and check core drilling were conducted that indicated that a substantial Carlin-type or disseminated, low-grade gold deposit occurred in two separate bodies. Drilling was based on geologic mapping and rock chip geochemical sampling. Both ore zones were reflected at the surface as gold and arsenic anomalies in rock chips. Heap leach tests attempted in 1977 were aborted by a flash flood, but were completed in 1978. Engineering studies occupied the next couple of years until the property achieved production in the fall of 1981. It is now producing by open-pit mining with gold recovery by heap leaching and cyanide extraction at a rated capacity of approximately 2722 t/d (3000 stpd) ore. Metal recovery has been projected (probably conservatively) at 5 10 kg/a (18,000 oz per year) gold and 1.6 Mg/a (59,000 oz per year) silver. For several years the Fansteel Products Co. has been engaged in e production and development of various of the rarer metals. It is at present engaged in the commercial production of tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum in a very high state of purity. The information contained in this paper is partly a general compilation from various sources and partly information obtained as a result of recent years of work in the laboratory of this company. Tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum form a group peculiar to themselves among the commercially available metals. Their very high melting points (tantalum 2770' C., tungsten 3350' C., and molybdenum 2550" C.) set them apart so far as the metallurgical processes for their production are concerned. Further, when properly prepared and treated they will stand a somewhat unusual degree of cold work, that is work below the temperature at which marked crystal growth takes place. Such cold-worked metal may show a high tensile strength; tantalum to 130,000 lb. per sq. in., tungsten to 490,000 lb., and molybdenum to 260,000 lb., in the form of fine wire. In physical appearance, these metals are not unlike some steels; they may be better described by saying that polished tantalum somewhat resembles lead; polished tungsten, iron; and polished molybdenum, nickel. The polished surfaces of all three remain untarnished in ordinary air. Air containing corrosion-producing impurities will, in general, show molybdenum the least resistant to corrosion and tantalum the most resistant. Molybdenum has, however, a high degree of resistance to corrosion by hydrochloric acid, a property that should render it of commercial interest. On the other hand, it is markedly attacked by some of the weaker organic acids. The three metals oxidize rapidly when heated at or above a dull red in air. This feature limits their use in many applications where their high melting point and strength make them appear usable. Tungsten and molybdenum, at red heat, are quite inert to hydrogen and nitrogen; while tantalum has a rather remarkable affinity for all the ordinary gases, which results in its becoming embrittled in their presence. The requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet and the dry. In each process, a stone storage is the first requisite of a successful plant. This storage place may handle the stone before or after crushing; its capacity may vary from two to three days' up to several months' supply, but it should be so designed that it can be filled as desired by the chemist and drawn at such points as will give a mixture of the various kinds of stone coming from the quarry and a reasonably uniform material going to the mill. The size of the storage place and the method of handling should be varied according to the nature of the material.

LATOUCHE, or the Beatson plant of the Kennecott Copper Corpn., is located in the Prince William Sound district of Alaska about 80 miles west of Cordova and 60 miles from Seward. Ore was discovered and claims located on Latouche Island in July, 1897. The mines were worked in a desultory manner until 1910, when the property was acquired by the Kennecott Copper interests. The first shipment of ore was made in 1904; only the higher grade ore was mined and no attempt was made to treat the ore until it was taken over by the Kennecott, company. Since that time the mine has been developed to produce 1500 tons a day and a mill has been erected for treating this tonnage, using flotation entirely. The orebody is more or less lenticular in shape with a maximum width of about 280 ft. and a length of about 800 ft. The southern end of the lens is split by a horse of waste for about 400 ft. The hanging-wall limit is a well-defined fault associated with a band of pyrrhotite, having an average dip of 60°. There is no defined foot wall, the value of the ore governing the limits of the mining; in one part of the mine, however, it is defined by a minor fault. The orebody is located in a shear zone of the country rock of graywacke and slate. The principal mineral is chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and quartz. The mine is located a few hundred feet from tidewater; the mill is located on the beach and the ore is hoisted direct from the mine through a vertical shaft into the mill bins. Until the past year practically all the mining had been conducted in open pits. During the past two years, the ore above the 200-ft. level has been developed and a system of stoping devised to recover this ore; however, this system has not been in use long enough to give any definite results as to costs or efficiency. It consists, principally, of dividing the orebody into stopes, across the full width of the orebody, 70 ft. wide with a pillar 30 ft. wide between the stopes. Raises are driven through the stopes at intervals of about 60 ft. and all the ore is broken by drilling from these raises; in other words, similar to a shrinkage stope, doing the drilling from the raises instead of setting up on the broken ore as is customary. Coal mining as an occupation, is hazardous under the most, ideal conditions. Confronted with this inescapable fact, every possible emphasis is placed by the Phelps Dodge Corporation, at the Dawson mines upon the employment of every means available for safeguarding its employes from the dangers attending their vocation. Accidents have a human aspect and a direct bearing upon the well-being of the workmen themselves. They cause a loss of wages, suffering and often privation of the employe and those dependent upon him. In case of death, his children are often forced into the wage earning class without preparation to fight the battles of life, with the result that the efficiency of the next generation is lowered. Dr. Jones, formerly of the war industries board, is responsible for the following statement. "Accident prevention as it is now conducted is principally a matter of education and not merely one of protection against physical hazards as frequently believed. In fact, the last ten years experience in accident prevention has demonstrated conclusively two things: 1. That three-fourths of all deaths and serious injuries in industry can be prevented. 2. In the industries doing the most efficient work, two-thirds have been accomplished thru organization and education as against one-third accomplished by means of mechanical safeguards or equipment. Experience in the past decade has conclusively proven that the work of accident prevention is not a "one man job" that satisfactory results can be secured only thru the highest measure of co-operation between the employer and employe, and this by means of organization. The employer must be vitally interested in the work if he expects to educate his men to share the responsibility with him. The men must be given a part to perform in it, if their interest is to be aroused and maintained. It is only thru organization that this is possible. In this connection it is interesting to note the results obtained by the Old Dominion Co. of Globe, Ariz., in reducing accidents after the organization of their safety department. The O. D. Co. are pioneers in the adoption of the workmens safety committees and and the results obtained by this, company after their safety work was well organized are truly wonderful. For the years 1913 to 1916, inclusive, at which time the safety work was not well organized, there were a total of 18 fatal accidents, the years 1917 to 1920, inclusive, was a period of intensive safety work, during which time there were only three fatal accidents, none having occured during 1919.

THE United Verde Extension mine is located in the Jerome mining district, on the eastern slope of the Black Hills, approximately northeast of the town 'of Jerome, Yavapai County, Arizona. The ore deposit may be termed a replacement in Yavapai schist. This schist is one of the oldest formations in the district, being probably of volcanic origin, and has been folded and faulted and contains intrusions of diorite and quartz porphyry. It is believed that the mineralization followed the porphyry intrusions and replaced the country rock; this was followed by erosion and a period of secondary enrichment, all completed in pre-Cambrian time. Later sediments of sandstones and limestones, to the depth of approximately 600 ft. (182 m.), were laid down, followed by volcanic flows. Faulting and erosion again took place, resulting in the present complicated arrangement of the strata. Prospecting, therefore, is very difficult, because the sediments practically cover the mineralized areas. This necessitates the sinking of deep shafts, cross-cutting, and, in some instances, diamond drilling to learn something of the various relations of the different formations and the occurrences of intrusions associated with ore deposition. The locating of new orebodies, therefore, is beset with innumerable difficulties. EARLY MINING METHODS The two orebodies constituting the principal resources of the company are known as the- small orebody and the Bonanza, or large orebody. These are about 150 ft. (45 m.) apart, and while they appear to be distinct orebodies may later prove to be connected. The character of the ore, the general associations of the porphyries adjoining the orebodies, and other characteristics, both in the ore-and general environment, are very similar. The small orebody was the first to be discovered and was mined for some time before the Bonanza was found.

PORPHYRY mining in the Bisbee district in Arizona did not begin until 1923, though Bisbee had been the scene of profitable copper-mining operations since 1880, and during the interval had contributed roughly 2,000,000,000 lb. of copper to the world's supply. At that time it ranked third among the copper districts of the United States, first place for total production going to Butte, Montana, and second to the district centering around Calumet, Michigan. Bisbee's production had come from the so-called "limestone" mines operated principally by the Phelps Dodge Corporation and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. Each of these companies had a large smelting plant at Douglas, 25 miles southeast of Bisbee on the Mexican border. The town of Douglas owed its existence primarily to the copper mines of Bisbee, the particular location having been determined, first, by the fact that water in adequate supply could be obtained by sinking wells; and, second, by its position about equally distant from Bisbee and the mines in Sonora, Mexico, of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a Phelps Dodge subsidiary. Three partners, Martin, Reilly, and Ballard, conducted the first operations of consequence at Bisbee about 1880; and in 1881 a smelting plant consisting of two 36 in. water-jacketed blast furnaces was erected near by. The ore came from open-cut workings on the later-to-be-famous Queen orebody. The furnace charge is said to have averaged 23 per cent copper-twice as rich as the concentrates from the mills and four times as rich as the smelting ore shipped from Bisbee in recent years. As early as 1881, disputes arose among owners of various claims, and groups of claims, over the ownership of orebodies under the law of apex and extra-lateral rights. Heap leach mining has long been an economical method for mining oxide copper ore, and with the U.S. Bureau of Mines' discovery of a way to economically strip gold and silver from carbon, it has become the standard in the gold and silver indus­try as well. Sulfide leach in copper recovery has always been a byproduct of oxide leach mining, although the methods and recovery rates have increased with technology. SX-EW has kindled a new interest in large deposits and dormant dumps of low grade sul­fide ore. Gold ore bio-oxidation was developed in the 1980's, but not tried on a large scale until US Gold built the Tonkin Springs Mine. This mine was dedicated to the large scale production of low grade sulfide ore that could be recovered through the newly discovered bio-oxidation method. On a small scale the method worked, but as time went on, problems with the process were costly and recovery was poor. US Gold did not have the finan­cial backing to perfect the process, and the mine was closed in 1990. Since that time, Newmont Gold Company has taken the lead and has dedicated a lot of resources to the perfection and implementation of this method. Some small mines have discov­ered that if they can use this technology they may be able to dou­ble and triple current ore reserves, because they will be able to mine deposits previously considered not to be economical.
