The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

DOES it pay to do really good work? Quite likely the practical millman will answer that it does not. The preparation of ores for market is primarily a business enterprise, and by and large the individual operator does not bother his head about squandering our national resources or making easier the job of the smelterman. Having accepted such ore as he may get fro111 the mine, his job is to make the best possible showing with his mill fro111 the standpoint of financial return. His success is measured in dollars and cents, and he has no rightful reason to expect more than scant acknowledgment of any other achievements from the stock- holders of his company who in the last analysis are his employers.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in effort put to tracking progress toward sustainability. Many aspects of society are participating in this “movement” including mining. The drivers are diverse and include evolving ideas in business and public administration as well as concerns for human well-being, community robustness, environmental integrity, and overall social and ethical responsibility. The scale in question varies greatly from local to global. For the most part, there has been a pre-occupation with developing discrete measurable signals. This paper argues that the overwhelming focus on the quantitative is ill-advised and that a more effective approach is to bring together the best of both quantitative and qualitative. The mining industry in particular is well-placed to affect this shift and reap the associated benefits.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

In the late 1970's and early 1980's a considerable number of large scale open pit mines were developed in N.S.W. and Queensland. At the time these mines were planned, the industry was characterised by rising coal prices, rising fuel prices, and a host of other labour and government constraints different to the situation today. Yet some mines have clearly been able to cope with this change much better than others. While one mine may now be expanding and profitable, its neighbour may still be labouring under painful adjustment processes. This paper examines the major reasons for this difference. It suggests more robust criteria for assessment of future projects to reduce their sensitivity to changes outside management control.

Since late 2010, CH2M HILL has been working with a confidential client who holds a long-term commitment to sustainable development (SD). The commitment is aligned with all three elements of the triple bottom line: people and society, ecosystems and environment, and financial and economic systems. These commitments are carried forward by the firm?s executives, managers, and operational sites, and are evident in materials posted on the company?s public website. These materials include a formal sustainability report prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines (GRI, 2006), a report that outlines key SD challenges and progress toward the GRI targets, and a delineation of risks and opportunities outlined in the firm?s Form 10-K and Annual Report. In keeping with its commitments to SD targets, our client wished to consider SD issues in its decision processes for facility expansion or new projects. The company engaged CH2M HILL to meet this goal, based on working relationships established through existing contracts and CH2M HILL?s leading capabilities in sustainable solutions.

The U.S. economy continued to expand during 1986, although at the slowest pace since 1982 when the current business expansion began. Real gross national product (GNP) grew about 2.6%, slightly below 1985 growth but significantly below that of 1984. The continuing expansion was fueled predominantly by rising personal consumption expenditures as well as growing government purchases of goods and services. Fixed investment, although positive, failed to grow at the rate of the overall economy. The trade deficit, which increased more than 30% over the record 1985 level, continued to depress economic growth despite significant declines in the price of petroleum and the value of the dollar. On a more positive note, domestic employment continued to grow--increasing over 2 million from the 1985 level--and inflation and interest rates declined. The unemployment rate dropped slightly to 7.0%. Of direct importance to the minerals-producing industries, expenditures for consumer and producer durables as well as investment in residential construction each grew faster than the overall economy, but investment in nonresidential structures fell more than 10% from the 1985 level. The low level of real capital spending declined about 3% in 1986, following strong gains in 1985 and in 1984. Capital expenditures for new plant and equipment bottomed out in the second quarter and expanded in the third and fourth quarters. The decline in the first half of the year was partially attributed to uncertainty arising from the then-proposed tax bill. Also, there was little impetus for corporations to invest in new capacity since factories were operating at less than 80% of capacity during most of the year, in part because of continued competition from imports.

Case studies are presented of three derelict sites in Kent and Essex that provide a good cross-section of opportunities for second-generation commercial uses of former chalk, limestone, clay and gravel workings. A 240 ha abandoned chalk quarry at Grays in Essex, now known as Chafford Hundred, is undergoing mixed development to include leisure facilities, a range of housing and commercial areas and an enhanced environment. The 120 ha of Stone Marshes now comprises the Crossways business park and the Dartford international ferry terminal. Reclamation and servicing required more work than had been anticipated and the fact that the area was within the green belt added to the delays, but Blue Circle was eventually able to provide a comprehensive development of the entire area to a high environmental standard. Stone Pit 1 landfill, at Dartford in Kent, is a former chalk quarry 40 ha in area and with an original average depth of 35 m. Landfilling commenced in 1976 and during the period 1979-1984 the site operator designed, developed and installed a gas collection and flaring system. From 1986 a gas plant supplied up to 5 000 000 therm/yr of landfill gas to a local cement works and in 1989 a 1 MW power generation scheme, later expanded to 3 MW, was commissioned. Gas is currently also supplied to a metal refining company for use in internal combustion engines

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. The Minerals Availability Program of the Bureau of Mines conducts cost evaluations of current and potential mineral operations in the United States and foreign countries. The International Mining Cost Indexation System (IMCI) allows data of different time periods within a country to be updated to a common base year for analytical purposes. The IMCI comprises 12 factor cost indexes and an exchange rate series for 96 market economy countries, denominated in both local and U.S. currency. The IMCI for each country contains 12 time series indexes that measure the average annual rate of change in the cost of factor inputs to the mining industry within that country. Mining industry factor cost indexes include wages, plant and equipment, construction and mining materials, power and transportation, and other measures considered to comprise the majority of capital and operating costs. Cost data or proxies are collected in local currency. Index series within each country are constructed separately and indexed on a 1975 base year. The local currency index is converted to a U.S.-dollar-based currency index using an exchange ratio.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the work and program of the Office of Coal Research. Our programs are oriented to serve the conservation objectives of the Johnson Administration and of the Nation by seeking out the most efficient and best uses for coal. We believe that even if only a portion of our program is successful, the coal industry and the Nation will benefit far out of proportion to our expenditures. Operating with a budget of $7,220,000 in Fiscal Year 1966, OCR sponsors contract research which offers potential for achieving benefits to the coal industry in the form of new production and new markets. This directs us into many areas of research activity: in coal combustion, in advancements in mining methods and coal preparation, in new uses for coal, and in associated economic and marketing research.

THE town of Jerome is located in Yavapai County in north central Arizona. It has a population of over 6000 people and the two important mines of the district, the United Verde and the United Verde Extension, lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde Valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft.. (1463 and 1676 m.), both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which ore is hauled to their respective smelters. The two smelter towns of Clarkdale and Verde, out in. the center of the valley and about 2000 ft. (609 m.) below, form part of the wide panorama that meets the eye at Jerome. This panorama and the topographic and surface features and the geologic formations are shown in a separate pamphlet. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "the rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the, highest parts of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. The two lava-capped mesas, known as Mingus and Woodschute Mountains, form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests -and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome or Verde copper district. However, if the smelters are not included, a strip about 7 mi. long and 3 mi. wide (11 by 5 km.) embraces practically all the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from about First View, 2 mi. northwest of Jerome, to the neighborhood of Allen Spring, near the south end of Mingus. Mountain. The rank of the district in copper production, as well as features of peculiar geologic interest in connection with the ore occurrences, entitle the district to much more consideration than it has received in the literature of copper mining. Arizona stands preeminent as a copper-producing state. In 1918, it produced four-tenths of the total amount produced in the United States, and nearly equaled the, combined production of its three chief competitors, Montana, Michigan, and Utah. A probabilistic system for autonomous tracking of excavated ore in mining would be highly valuable. Currently, mine sites can have a vast array of sensors; examples include excavator load cells, bucket volume estimators and haul truck strut pressures which can be used to gather information about the excavated ore at different locations. These sensors can be utilised efficiently to increase the accuracy of mine estimates by introducing a real-time ore tracking system. This requires the introduction of a probabilistic ore tracking framework to consistently fuse information from any sensor input. Current modelling practices are manually intensive, deterministic (no recognition of the quality of data) and generally not a complete end-to-end system. This paper will provide a novel method for tracking extensive ore properties (mass, volume) and intensive ore properties such as chemical composition (eg Fe per cent, SiO2 per cent, Al2O3 per cent). This method is proved to ensure that correct correlations between states are conserved as material is transferred, combined and/or separated at different locations with any configuration of sensor inputs. This ensures that consistency of estimates is maintained and other benefits such as real-time probabilistic reconciliation can be implemented. A method for combining material of different mass and chemical compositions is also developed to enable accurate and efficient operation of the system. Representative experiments on a small-scale and a larger field trial which mimic the mining processes of excavation, haul and unload to ROM Stockpile will be used to verify the approach.

The oil and gas industry of New Mexico recorded notable progress ill 1935. More wells were brought in than in any previous year, and important new discoveries were made. The total number of completions was 340, of which 260 were oil wells, 8 were gas wells and 72 were dry holes. The total oil production was 20,228,947 bbl., an appreciable increase over the 1934 production of 16,636,804 barrels. Many of the wells completed in southeastern New Mexico were acidized. This treatment proved highly effective in increasing the capacity of the wells, the resulting potentials usually being two to ten times as large as before acid treatment. In the Lea County fields in which proration was entirely on an acreage basis, the tendency of many of the operators was to complete their wells according to best conservation practice rather than to obtain the largest possible potential. Much remedial work was done in the Hobbs, Cooper, Jal and Eunice fields, and with excellent results. At many of the wells high gas-oil ratios were greatly reduced and encroaching waters shut off by setting packers. Several companies carried on pretentious geophysical campaigns in the southeastern part of the state. The location of the Amerada discovery well in the Monument field was based on geophysical surveys. The New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, established by the 1935 Legislature and consisting of the Governor, the Commissioner of Public Lands and the State Geologist, began to function in May. Production in the state thereafter was based on orders issued by the Commission. Proration in the Hobbs field, which had been provided for since July, 1930, by successive proration agreements signed by all operators in the field and approved by the State Geologist, was continued by the Commission by giving approval to the current proration agreement,. A plan of proration for the other Lea County fields that had been in offect since early ill 1934 was adopted. 111 September, 1935, the Commission approved a. proration agreement for the Artesia-Jackson-Maljarnar area in Eddy and Lea counties that had been agreed upon by

TWO days of solid discussion, with barely time out for meals, characterized the Tulsa meeting of the Petroleum Division. It was preeminently an earnest gathering devoted to technical matters. Sessions were held in the Crystal room of the Mayo Hotel with luncheon served each day in the back of the same room so that talk of methods, while slightly less formal, extended right through the lunch hour. Thursday evening the Committee did provide a little relaxation in an informal dinner at the Tulsa Club where, after a brief musical program and an amusing skit by the local Herman the Great, brief addresses in non-technical vein were made by President Farish and Vice-president Rice of the Humble Company, Henry L. Doherty of Cities Service, Secretary. Bain of the Institute, and others. The presence of leading executives of a number of the oil companies at the dinner and the sessions, and the cordial approval they expressed of the work of the Division were especially gratifying. The total registration was 215 with 100 at the dinner and 70-to 80 lunching together each day.

INAP was formed in 1998 by a number of major mining companies, with a view to sharing acid rock drainage knowledge and experience, and to coordinate global research on the management of sulfidic mine wastes. INAP is now moving to further strengthen its global role by networking with regional organisations that are active in the area of ARD, including MEND 3/NEDEM 3 in Canada, the ADTI in the USA and ACMER in Australia. The INAP-Regional Organisation partnership will be formally launched at the 6th ICARD.

President Robert M. von Storch called the meeting to order at 9:00 A.M., and introduced the first speaker of the MANUFACTURERS' HOUR. D. M. Stromquist, Technical Representative, Coal Chemical Sales Division, United States Steel Corporation, Salt Lake City, Utah, presented a paper, "Ammonium Nitrate and Its Use as a Blasting Agent," which was illustrated with a number of slides. (See Index.) President von Storch introduced Kenneth J. MacLeod, Socony Mobil Oil Company, Denver, Colorado, who gave a short paper on "New Greases." Following are excerpts from Mr. MacLeod's talk: The recent advances in machinery, and their continuing development present a never ending challenge to the oil companies to develop new and better oils. Over the years, industry's machinery has been pressed to meet higher production rates, which has subjected the machinery to increased speeds, temperatures and pressures. Lubrications have had to be designed for a wider range of use. The entire industry has attempted to produce a good product for this extra-duty need. Most greases have contained lead in the past, and especially the food industry has had to be most careful in the use of this around food products.
