Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

"Wastewater from ores processing is often polluted by molybdate and sulfate (SO42-) ions. Sorption is one of suitable methods for removing those pollutants when presenting in low concentrations. This work reports results on adsorption of sulfate and molybdate ions on metal modified (with barium - Ba and lead - Pb) and organic reagent modified (with Hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide - HDTMA) clinoptilolite. Zeolite’s modification with Pb, Ba and HDTMA increases its uptake capacity with respect to Mo(VI) at pH 3, with the uptake capacity decreasing in the order CL-Pb > CL-HDTMA > CL-Ba. Lead-modified clinoptilolite shows high uptake with respect to Mo(VI) in acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. The presence of SO42- in concentrations twice higher than the amount of Mo(VI) do not interfere with the Mo(VI) removal by CL-Pb. Zeolite’s modification with Ba and Pb renders it able to immobilize SO42- from water in the pH range 3-9. Kinetics of the uptake process is best described by the pseudo-first order kinetic equation. Increasing the initial concentrations of Mo(VI) and SO42- increases the removed amount of pollutants. INTRODUCTION Wastewater from copper-molybdenum ores processing is often polluted by molybdate and sulfate ions. Molybdenum (Mo) migrates easily in water and consequently the Mo polluted areas could extend for hundreds and thousands of meters (Ryzhenko, 2010). Molybdate anion is the only Mo(VI) species in natural water, i.e. at pH > 6.0. Its median freshwater hazardous concentration affecting 5% of the species (HC 5.50%) is 38.2 mg Mo/L (De-Schamphelaere et al., 2010). The marine water chronic toxicity (HC 5.50%) is assessed at 5.74 mg Mo/L (Heijerick et al., 2012). The predicted no-effect concentrations (PNEC) are 12.7 mg Mo/L and 1.92 mg Mo/L correspondingly for freshwater and marine water (Heijerick et al., 2012a). When sulfates present in drinking water in excess of 250 mg/L they cause a cathartic action (especially in children) in the presence of sodium and magnesium, and when the concentration exceeds 600 mg/L, diarrhea. When sulfate-rich effluents are discharged into the environment, they may increase the acidity of water bodies and soils (Guimarães and Leão, 2014). Because of the adverse effects to human health and the environment, limits are set for SO42- concentrations in waters and wastewaters in the range of 250 / 500 mg/L."

For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. A few years ago, the term Track & Trace for explosives was only known in Europe and Brazil at most; the introduction of this technology is experiencing an undreamt-of boom worldwide. More and more countries are enacting legislation to introduce Track & Trace of explosives and follow Europe and Brazil on this path. At present, the world's leading manufacturers are already using such solutions, are in the process of implementing them, or are in the planning process. However, based on the experience gained in Europe, there are outstanding challenges for all manufacturers. These are questions of compliance, logistics, distribution, and, of course, especially, the necessary adaptation of the production environment. However, this development involves considerable effort on the part of the manufacturers. New devices for marking the explosives and digitally recording the data are integrated into the production process. This should be done as cost-effectively as possible, without restricting production capacity and speed, and with as few process changes as possible. This paper uses real-life customer experiences examples to explain paths from project design to real implementation. Lessons learned from the experience of European explosives manufacturers are presented, missteps are described, and solutions are identified. Individual steps along this path are explained, and solutions are told to avoid pitfalls and bottlenecks. Finally, it refers to the risk analysis and concrete examples in implementing the planning into production. Methods of marking various explosives are shown, and the use of Track & Trace to solve logistics tasks in picking and shipping explosives, including the data exchange with ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.

THE Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation, Limited, a Canadian company, operates alluvial gold dredges in the Klondike goldfields of Yukon Territory. Its operations are of unique interest to Canadian mining as it is the only large-scale placer mining operation of this type in Canada. Its properties lie in the valley of the Klondike river and its tributaries, Bonanza, Hunker, Bear, Last Chance, and All Gold creeks, and in the valley of Indian river and its tributaries, Dominion, Gold Run, Sulphur, Eureka, Montana, and Quartz creeks. At the end of 1938, they consisted of 1,650 placer mining claims and 9 leases or concessions. They cover a belt with an area of approximately 1,000 square miles. This vast area covers in part claims which have been previously worked by other methods such as 'drift' and 'open-cut' mining, and areas which were too low grade for such methods. The ground held by the Company is not held in freehold but in the form of mining claims and mining leases granted by the Dominion Government under the provisions of the Yukon Placer Mining Act. Full-size creek claims are 500 feet in length by 1,000 feet on either side of the base-line. Hill and bench claims are 500 feet up and clown the valley and 1,000 feet at right angles to the valley. All claims are held on the basis of an annual renewal fee of $10 for each claim plus 'representation work' of an assessed value of $200 per claim per annum. For the purpose of such representation work, claims may be 'grouped'. This means that work done by one dredge is sufficient to 'represent' a comparatively large block of claims. It is only in this way that it becomes possible to consider operations on a large scale over a term of years, for such operations would obviously be impossible on law-grade ground if representation work had to be done separately on each individual claim in each year.

Yielding rock bolt support systems have been developed to accommodate ground movement in shifting ground such as in coal operations; in creeping ground such as salt, trona, and potash; and in swelling ground associated with some clays. These systems, designed to remain intact despite ground movement, should enhance mine safety and help contain costs in areas where rebolting of rigid non-yielding systems is typically required. Four such systems were tested in straight tensile pulls in the laboratory. They include the Slip Nut System from Dywidag Systems International USA, Inc., Ischebeck's bolt mounted Titan Load Indicator, Rocky Mountain Bolt Company's Yielding Cable Bolt, and a rock bolt installed variation of the yielding steel post developed by RE/SPEC Inc. The first two systems are currently marketed products and the latter two are prototype systems. Each system responds to load and displacement by yielding in a unique manner. All are designed to yield at predetermined loads. A description of each system and its yield function is provided. Each system was tested over its prescribed yield range in a test machine. At least five tests were performed on each system. Each system yielded and continued to provide support according to its design. Each shows promise for ground control use in shifting or creeping rock. This work helps to illustrate the comparative differences in performance between these specialized systems and the applications where they may be most useful.

"Airborne electromagnetic surveys were flown during 1965 in the Moose River area of Ontario. The systems used were INPUT Mark II and the Canadian Aero Otter. Anomalies indicated by both systems were located on the ground with vertical-loop EM. Two such anomalies were drilled, with no explanation being found in the bedrock geology. Subsequent seismic, resistivity and gravity surveys indicated that the sources of these anomalies lay in the overburden. Current work in the similar geological environment of the Winisk River area has shown that comparable AEM anomalies can still be misleading. The lesson to be, learned from these experiences is that additional geophysical work can help to resolve doubtful cases before drilling decisions are made."

Laboratory metallurgical treatments of three high-iron bauxite ores from Arkansas were conducted to determine the relative effectiveness of experimental methods for recovering alumina and a commercially acceptable iron concentrate. The standard for evaluating recoveries from experimental processes was the Al2O3 recovery from Bayer digests of the crude ores; recoveries from digestion of the three ores were 74.1, 87.4, and 88.7 percent. Flotation, magnetic separation, or various combinations of digestion, calcination, and reduction-sintering, leaching, and magnetic separation of leach residues failed to produce Al2O3 recoveries as high as the standard. A high-iron-bearing fraction, containing between 68 and 78 percent of the total iron, was produced in a three-phase treatment involving a caustic, lime reduction-sinter of the crude ore, water extraction of Al2O3 from the sinter, and magnetic separation of the leach residue.

Reliable fire detection is essential for both safe evacuation and containment or extinguishment. In order to increase reliability by reducing the number of nuisance fire alarms in underground mines that use diesel-powered equipment, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a diesel-discriminating fire detector (DDD). It was designed to discriminate between smoke produced by a fire and the smoke-laden exhaust of a diesel engine. Experiments were conducted by the Bureau to compare the smoke detection capabilities of the DDD with those of conventional fire detectors in response to smoldering coal and conveyor belting. A comparison was made among the alarm times of a carbon monoxide (CO) detector with an alarm threshold of 5 ppm, a smoke detector with an optical density alarm threshold of 0.044 of', and the DDD with an alarm threshold of 0.025 V. The results show that the DDD will reliably detect developing coal and conveyor belt fires. The average time delay separating the DDD alarm from the first detector to alarm was 76 s for smoldering conveyor belt and 65 s for smoldering coal. The longest time delay between the response of the DDD and the first detector to alarm was approximately 120 s.

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. The effects of several fluxes on purification, microstructures and properties of A00 aluminium have been studied. The experimental results and analyses indicate that many cracks and large porosities exist in the surface film above the melt purified by C2Cl6 and that the film is floe and mostly composed of AhO3 and pure aluminum, which carries many carbon particles and AlCh not fully volatilized. And then over 50% of the all-melting residue is pure aluminum, which is one of the major reasons for high melting loss. Moreover, because of a mass of gas bubbles and a state of seethe, there exist many inclusions which size is under l0µm in the microstructure of A00 aluminum purified with C2Cl6 or fluxes containing C2Cl6- With this purifying method, the aluminum crystal grains are extended along the radius that was observed firstly and the average crystal size of A00 aluminum are about 100µm~150µm. In addition, small size inclusions have little affected on tensile strength and micro inclusions under l0µm have little affected on elongation.

"Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations in Falconbridge, Ontario, has been in operation since 1930. Many new technologies and practices, now common in the industry, have been implemented at the site and contribute significantly to the industry’s understanding. Since the last update on the Smelter operation published at the NiCo 2005 conference, the Converter Aisle has undergone significant changes in the operation of vessels. The Aisle continues to consist of 4 Peirce-Smith converters, but the Slag-Make Converter, and the Slag Cleaning Vessel have been re-tooled or re-built as Hybrid Vessels (HV), each generating matte for the two Finishing Converters and clean slag for disposal. The complicated scheduling and the overall benefits to the Smelter are reviewed here as part of the on-going tradition of industry support.INTRODUCTION The Glencore Nickel Sudbury Smelter operates a Roast Reduction Smelting (RRS) flow sheet with a specialized Converter Aisle operation that maximizes metal recovery to Bessemer matte. The main process equipment consists of a pair of Fluid Bed Roasters, a submerged-arc Electric Furnace and four Peirce-Smith converting type vessels (Figure 1). In the RRS flow sheet, concentrate is roasted with air to remove sulphur as SO2. Calcine from the Roasters is mixed with petroleum coke upon addition to the six-in-line rectangular Electric Furnace. The coke back reduces the metallic oxides, producing a matte and a discard slag.Gases from the Roasters are sent to a single pass absorption Acid Plant where the SO2 is converted to acid. Under the previous operating targets, approximately 70–75% of the sulphur in the incoming concentrate was fixed as acid with the balance going to the Electric Furnace in calcine for Bessemer matte production. Off-gases from the Electric Furnace and Converters are combined in a balloon flue, treated for particulates in electrostatic precipitators and discharged to the Smelter stack without any SO2 fixation."

Our present and future needs for base and previous metals are not satisfied by the present rate of new viable discoveries. This deficiency can be met by increasing the number of competent exploration organizations and by doing a more effective job of prospecting. My principal purpose is to show that new discoveries can be increased by improving the use of exploration techniques in a concept-oriented exploration program. Exploration techniques are defined and classified. The effectiveness of many exploration groups can be improved by better definition of objectives and thorough planning of the exploration program. The role of objectives, planning, and the use of techniques are discussed within the scope of the exploration framework. Common pitfalls in the use of exploration data are identified such as: inconsistency of geologic measurements, negative use of data, indiscriminate use of geo-surveys, collection of irrelevant information, and the unrealistic desire for exploration panaceas. Suggestions for improving the use of techniques include the use of multiple-working hypotheses, improvements in the quality of exploration data, use of geology in the selection, planning and interpretation of geochemical and geophysical surveys, and the recognition of variables and limitations affecting the interpretation of exploration data. The critical role of geologic mapping by Federal and State agencies is mentioned for satisfying the continual exploration demand for better geologic maps and filling many gaps that currently exist. The importance of imaginative and qualified exploration personnel is discussed as well as the maximum utilization of their exploration creativity. The problem of integrating field studies, research and training at universities and research institutions is identified. The need for high-quality research in economic geology is emphasized especially the importance of reducing the steadily increasing gap between basic and applied research.

Current methods for scratching a piece of rock to obtain or check the characteristics of its component material can sometimes be expensive and time consuming. Scratching a rock core requires an object with a point that it is capable of sliding along the surface of the rock while recording the response from the rock due to the sliding. With the idea of providing a cost efficient solution for a scratch device, a new generation turntable arm, composed of a cartridge with a diamond stylus and a USB output connection to the computer, was used to record the vibrations from the sliding of the stylus along a rock core surface. The output sound from the stylus was captured with the computer as an audio input signal. The raw sound data was recorded in a standard waveform audio format (wav) file, and post-processed using sound spectrum analyzer software (Spectra-Lab) to capture numerical data such as frequency, amplitude, and noise from the file. The results for frequency, amplitude, and noise were compared and plotted against the scanned surface of the rock core in the search for correlations that might represent specific characteristics of the surface being scratched.

The New Orient mine, owned and operated by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., has caused a great deal of comment and interest because of its unusual features and huge daily production. It is in Franklin County, Illinois, adjacent to the town of West Frankfort. The seam being mined is the Illinois No. 6 which in this locality is 9 to 12 ft. thick and lies approximately 500 ft. below the surface. Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that this is one of the largest coal mines in the world from a daily production standpoint. During 1928, New Orient produced 2,400,000 tons, which amounts to over 10,000 tons each day the mine operated that year. The mine is built for a capacity of 12,000 tons but has actually hoisted over 15,000 tons in one 8-hr, shift. This enormous production can perhaps be better visualized if it is realized that each day's operation depletes over two acres of coal. The general features of this mine have already been fully covered in a paper by George B. Harrington,' President of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In a paper of the nature of Mr. Harrington's, it was unnecessary to stress any particular phase of mining conditions, consequently the ventilation problems were touched upon but lightly. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe some of the problems which have been encountered in providing adequate ventilation for the mine. Ventilating Conditions The acreage allotted to New Orient mine has a length, north and south, of approximately 6 miles, and a width, east and west, of 2 to 4 miles. A number of important considerations caused the hoist shaft, air shaft and surface plant to be located near the southeast corner of the property, instead of near the center, as is usual. During the initial phase of the mine development, the mine was ventilated through these shafts, although there was a full realization that at some future date other shafts would be required.

"3.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter discusses briefly the common law concepts of fiduciary relationship, constructive trust, and breach of confidence. Following a discussion of confidentiality agreements, the last section of the chapter compares and comments on two common law cases, the LAC Case and the Metalore Case. Civil law readers should not ignore this chapter or § 3.5. the comparison as, to a large extent, the concepts and comments are universal, even though the procedures for applying them may vary.1It should be appreciated that, regardless of the legal system, if the Court sees that a wrong has been done, it will attempt to right that wrong, either by awarding monetary damages against the wrong-doer to compensate the injured party or by attempting to make the injured party whole again by such means as negating an agreement (as in the Metalore Case) or returning property to a wronged party (as in the LAC Case). The methodology for accomplishing either of these results will vary with the jurisdiction, and the two are not mutually exclusive.These two Ontario cases have been chosen, not because they are the only ones available – they certainly are not – but because both are relatively well known within the minerals industry and they deal with problems that may face any explorationist (although it is to be hoped that the facts of the Metalore Case do not represent “normal” behaviour). Each judgment offers useful guidelines, as well as insight into a judge’s approach to problems, the type of information he expects to receive, how his mind works, and, particularly in the Court of Appeal judgment in the Metalore Case, how he might reason through and “justify” his decisions.3.2.
