Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. Questions of sampling precision and accuracy affect every process plant in differing ways and to differing extents. To address these perceived issues, chemists, metallurgists and engineers are often asked to check their results to confirm their reliability. However, it is not possible to achieve the level of detail required to check every sample, especially if the event has already occurred. No operation has the resources to frequently sample every point in the process for the purpose of verification.One way to address this scenario is by generating a sufficiently detailed comparative data set from a dynamic mass balance simulation of the processing plant. This mass balance uses both sample and plant instrument data to model every flow, while also taking inventory changes and process chemistry into account.The mass balance data can be used to identify any bias present in plant sampling and analysis. It can also be used to verify any unexpected assay results by taking a holistic view of the process. Improving the precision and accuracy of sampling data helps support operational decision-?making and understanding. Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

"Heath Steele Mines Ltd. operates a lead-zinc-copper mining and milling complex in New Brunswick.• During the past seven years, as ore reserves increased, the mill capacity was first expanded to 1,600 tpd and then to 3,000 tpd. In the last expansion, instead of building a completely new 3,000-tpd mill, or adding to existing installations, Heath Steele retained service facilities, buildings, ore bins, Jab, etc., and removed and replaced almost all existing process facilities. Requiring a complete mill shutdown, the expansion had to be carried out in minimum time. Also, new equipment had to fit into existing space. Critical path networks of the project were prepared, a tight schedule for construction was mapped out and progress charted daily to detect problems before they could interrupt the schedule. Heath Steele supervised the purchasing, handling and storage of new equipment, maintained liaison with the engineering contractor and became a sub-contractor, using its own staff to install all flotation equipment and process piping. The 1,600-tpd installation was dismantled and a 3,000- tpd unit was successfully put onstream in 5 months - on time and within budget. One benefit stemming from the expansion: production increased 87 per cent while operating and maintenance labour rose only 8 per cent."

"Air recovery, the fraction of air entering a flotation cell that overflows the cell lip, is linked to flotation performance, and it has been shown through industrial testwork that operating flotation cells at air rates that yield the Peak Air Recovery (PAR) results in high mineral recovery. For operating parameters over which flotation plants have little control, such as particle size, investigating the effect on the position of PAR, and the subsequent effect on flotation performance, proves more challenging. To this end, we have developed a bench scale flotation system that runs continuously and exhibits froth behavior similar to that found industrially, allowing the study of such parameters as particle size in addition to air rate. The bench scale system comprises a 4 l baffled cylindrical flotation cell, stirred by a Rushton impeller. The concentrate is recycled back into the pulp, allowing for continuous operation. Glass beads are used as solid particles, allowing a wide range of particle sizes to be tested, with TTAB as collector and MIBC as frother. The system allows operation at air rates typical of industrial flotation systems (1 -2 cms-1 superficial gas velocity), in addition to yielding a froth that coalesces and bursts and exhibits a peak in air recovery as cell air rate in increased. Solids and water recovery is also measured. The results show that air recovery is sensitive to changes in particle size. The intermediate size distribution showed a peak in air recovery (PAR) that corresponded with the maximum solids flowrate, as found industrially. It is shown that finer particles do result in more stable froths and higher recoveries, particularly at low air rates. The effect of particle size on the position of PAR is not yet unequivocally determined from these results."

In the spring of 1991, Western Aggregates, Inc. began operating the newest expanded shale lightweight aggregate operation in North America. The operation is located in Jefferson County, Colorado, just south of Boulder, at the sight of the former Ideal Basic Industries ("Idealite") lightweight aggregate plant, which was decommissioned in 1975. The "new" facility has been built to principally serve the Denver and Front Range markets, as well as ship products into other locations in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Kansas and Nebraska. Western Aggregates is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inco U.S., a subsidiary of Inco Limited of Toronto, Canada. Inco Limited is the free world's largest producer of nickel and is a leading producer of copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and platinum group metals, high nickel and super alloys, and specialized engineered products. Inco is constantly seeking new mining related investments that leverage off its mining and processing skills and that meet corporate fmancial objectives. Construction materials are an area presently being pursued by Inco. The basic 'building blocks' of society, from a construction perspective, are sand and gravel, stone, and aggregates. To the vast majority of people these are natural products that are mined, quarried or dredged, and other than washing, screening and crushing, are generally used in their primary form. While these materials vary from quartzite river rock, to calcified limestone, to hard basalt, they are generally classified as "heavy" aggregates. There are, however, other types of aggregates that do not fall under the "heavy" classification, but are used in general construction activities just the same.

Engineering design practices, tools, systems and methodologies should be prepared around true eco-efficiency parameters, adopt wholesystems-thinking and consider life-cycle impacts for the design task. Experience dictates that the application of sustainable plant design practices is most likely to succeed if: The principles are well documented and explained. All stakeholders agree on what sustainability means. Sustainable plant design is treated as a core process. The principals of sustainable plant design are equally applicable in brownfield and Greenfield environments. Although brownfield situations provide the designer with less latitude for change, these types of projects do allow easier measurement and demonstration of relative impacts. This paper further develops the above points by drawing on case studies from HatchÆs repertoire.

"A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

Most high, purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz-generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found which is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies - Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco, Inc. - mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, Illinois. Both companies mine from various locations within a ten mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Company mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Since the late 60's, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70's. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Risk management has become an essential tool for mining companies to ensure their projects are well-managed and profit expectations are achieved. Risk management has also become a mandatory corporate governance requirement in Australia for publicly listed companies and equally important to attract investors. This paper provides a brief overview of the essential tools needed to implement a practical risk management framework to comply with the internationally recognised ISO 31000:2009 risk management-principles and guidelines from the perspective of small or soon to be producing mining companies. To?successfully?deal with the unknown and to manage the opportunities and risks involved with a mining project requires a clear understanding of the basic risk management principles. These include how to develop a project risk register, how to develop a project risk treatment plan and how to manage and monitor project risks to take full advantage of the opportunities presented.The first step is to identify and fully appreciate the risks that face a mining project. There are many risk identification methods that can be used including checklists, brainstorming and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies. These often lead to a telephone book full of risks which are near to impossible to manage. A risk library specifically designed?for mining?projects containing no more than 100 risks will cover the major showstoppers, is practical and can be readily implemented and successfully managed.A risk framework also needs to be established which is compatible with the companyÆs structure and objectives. Once each risk has been assessed in regard to consequence and likelihood and the risk control systems are in place they need to be assigned to the responsible manager. The extreme or high risks will require a risk treatment plan to be developed. Risks will change during the life cycle of a mining project. Underwater drilling and blasting is conducted for deepening of sea channels for port berths, lake or reservoirs for water supply etc. so that rock dredging becomes easier. During this process there are several associated unwanted effects having potential to cause damage to surrounding structures and the environment, flora and fauna. Though all these ill effects can’t be completely eliminated but adopting controlled blasting techniques can minimize these to tolerable levels. It is recognized that ground vibrations resulting from rock blasting below water near dam may endanger the safety of earthen dams. Therefore, controlled blasting technique was used to ensure the safety of dam and its efficacy was established by monitoring of blast vibrations. The usage of small quantity of explosives confined in blast holes, non-electrical delay detonators and initiating each hole with a separate delay helped to minimize the ground vibration effects on surrounding structures.

"Stream-based microfluidic solvent extraction offers a novel alternative to bulk-scale mixer-settler operations. However present maximum throughputs are restrictive and there are engineering challenges that need to be overcome before the technology is robust. This is especially the case for mineral processing, where circuits must be able to handle variable feed streams with long retention times and where maintenance should be minimized. This paper highlights research directed at investigating and evaluating these challenges for actual mineral leach solutions of metal ions. Molecular and particulate channel fouling is discussed. Most extraction systems studied to date show no effects that would preclude use of the technology. For rare earth elements (REE) with fast extraction rates, scale-up of volumetric throughput to 100 L/h using suitable arrays of channels, microfluidic chips and modules is shown to be achievable using a small contactor (approx. 2 m3) platform. This requires only 2–3 % of the typical aqueous phase inventory and residence time used in an equivalent mixer-settler. For a circuit with 100 contactors, the overall residence time would be less than 1 h, using an aqueous inventory of 40 L.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is of pivotal importance in many mineral processing circuits around the world, with liquid-liquid solvent extraction (SX) a key step in the separation of many base metals (e.g. Cu and Ni), radioisotopes, precious metals, and the ‘technology’ metals, such as rare earth elements (REEs) (Ritcey & Ashbrook, 1979). The standard equipment for SX in mineral processing is the mixer-settler, in which liquid dispersions are created, by agitation, to increase the surface-to-bulk ratio and, thus increase the mass transfer rate between the liquid phases. In stream-based microfluidic SX (microSX), these high surface-to-volume ratios are achieved by contacting microscopic streams (Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014), rather than forming small droplets, so that phase disengagement can be accelerated (essentially instantaneous via branching of the two streams of liquid at a channel junction). MicroSX is profoundly different from bulk mixer-settler SX operations and offers exciting opportunities for processing hydrometallurgy solutions (Kriel, Holzner, Grant, Ash, Woollam, Ralston, & Priest, 2015; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012). Nonetheless, the advantages of using microfluidic environments are presently balanced by very significant challenges relating to throughput, process control, coupling of stages, flow stability, and fouling. If these challenges can be met using smart chip designs, process control and clever engineering, high-value/low-volume SX processes stand to benefit greatly."

"The Nickel/Cobalt operation in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta has successfully used an oxidative ammonia leach process to refine a variety of feeds into high quality nickel and cobalt products for over 60 years. Fundamental changes to the refining process were made when the major feed was converted from nickel concentrate to cobalt rich mixed sulphides in the early 1990s. Since the early 1990s, the production capacity of the refinery has expanded to match increases in both mixed sulphides and other feeds. In addition to increasing the production capacity of the refinery, other changes have been required in order to improve the operability and reliability of the refinery as well as to deal with increasingly stringent safety and environmental requirements. This paper describes recent changes at the refinery including changes to the flow sheet, improvements in unit operations, incorporation of new feeds, management of byproducts, and control of impurities.INTRODUCTION The Cobalt Refinery Company (Corefco) plant in Fort Saskatchewan processes nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide intermediate produced at the lateritic nickel mine and high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facility in Moa Bay, Cuba. Both operations are jointly owned and operated by Sherritt International and General Niquel of Cuba. The mixed sulphide, along with other feed materials, is processed at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery using a pressure ammonia leach-hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel and cobalt metal. This refinery was originally constructed in 1954 to treat nickel concentrate from Sherritt’s Lynn Lake mine in Manitoba. (Benson and Colvin, 1964; Boldt and Queneau, 1967; Forward, 1953; Forward and Mackiw, 1955; Kerfoot, 1989) From the mid-1970s until the early-1990s, the facility operated as an independent refinery, treating nickel-bearing feeds from around the world. The flowsheet was changed in 1992 to address the increased cobalt content of the feed. (Cordingley and Krentz, 2005; Kerfoot and Cordingley, 1997) The flowsheet was adapted further in 2009 to improve cobalt speciation in the leach process, which allows better cobalt-nickel separation. The 2009 iteration is shown in Figure 1. Three ammonia leach stages were used to ensure high recoveries of nickel and cobalt. Underflow solids from the final leach stage contained mainly iron oxides. One of the features of the leach process is the innovative recycling of ammonia. Ammonia vented from the leach process in tail gas and from atmospheric tanks is recovered and recycled into the refinery using water based scrubbers and a high pressure distillation process. Indeed, roughly 250 t NH3/d is recovered as distillate and recycled back into the process. Also, air enriched with ammonia which is vented from the later first stage autoclaves is recycled to the lead first stage autoclaves to maximize oxygen and ammonia utilization."

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

It is a gift so large we must all wonder at its purpose and our responsibilities in serving our fellow man with it.We who are here to plan and implement the development of this essential mineral resource enjoy a great -privilege; and we share a great responsibility -to see that the billions of tons of potash which have waited beneath these prairies for millions of years are widely and wisely used to nourish the earth through future millenniums.To know the true value of potash, to be able to bring forth this re-source from over 3,000 feet deep in the earth, to establish markets and develop its potential worldwide is all part of our great heritage from generations past. The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.
