THE elastic, earthwaves produced naturally by earthquakes -have been used for a long time as evidence from' which to draw conclusions in regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The elastic earthwaves produced artificially by occasional explosions and recorded by seismological .observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the-geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earthwaves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The seismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earthwaves, has developed almost `clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations, and in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal: Plain region of Texas and Louisiana has 'scored the, most brilliant success.

Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

Within conventional copper and nickel-copper sulfide smelters, ladles of molten matte are fed into converters. These converters blast oxygen-enriched air into the matte, thereby eliminating iron and sulfur. The converting reactions are exothermic and, indeed, the converter heat balance is often a limiting consideration on the smelter throughput. If a portion of the matte were fed in solidified (granulated) form, this would support higher oxygen enrichment, and lower volumes of converter offgas, allowing higher throughput. This approach is not applied in conventional smelters, partly because of the copious amounts of water that must be evaporated in typical granulators, as in the Kennecott-Outotec process. The current paper recalls a waterless matte granulator that had been pioneered in the 1990’s, and is applicable to conventional smelters. A mathematical formulation is presented that can be used in the context of simulation-based optimization, to estimate the size and impact of waterless matte granulation.

The cost of water treatment is now more than ever a major consideration for maintaining an environmentally and economically sustainable mining operation. As an industry, we often have to consider water sources that are highly impure and difficult to treat. We are also discovering the value of our waste waters in this regard and using new and improved methods and technology to reclaim and reuse water. In many instances, the water or waste water to be treated is highly acidic and saturated in sparingly soluble salts. Conventional systems used to liberate this type of water typically involve high doses of lime with large volumes of waste sludge produced, and are comparatively complex to operate, to pretreat the water in order to reduce scaling tendency on the reverse osmosis stage. However, if the water is considered valuable for reuse, then why not avoid difficult and cumbersome pretreatment processes and treat the water at low pH to keep the sparingly soluble salts, metals and other dissolved species in solution. This paper describes a patented technology that uses and successfully proves this concept as a cost effective option for certain situations. Results from a treatability study on an Australian groundwater are discussed, along with an economic comparison to a conventional method and discussion on full-scale potential.

Wastes when produced can be reused or recycled prior to disposal. Industries that cause environmental concerns during manufacturing include primary materials and primary metals. Pollution prevention mechanisms to achieve waste reduction require new separation, reclamation, control and process simulation technologies. Substituting recyclables for virgin resources will reduce energy use, water pollution, air pollution, water use and mining wastes. Shrinking landfill space will spur new technologies for waste treatment and recycling. These situations hence offer opportunities for innovative flowsheets with appropriate separation technologies. Development of innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables offer unique opportunities for process/product development, obtain green products and hence market advantage. The paper will illustrate with selected innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables.

I WILL begin this presentation by citing the annual per capita use of copper in Canada. This is best calculated by taking refinery domestic sales, plus imports of the products of foreign fabricating mills (very little refinery copper is imported), and deducting the exports of Canadian mills. No attempt has been made to estimate the copper content of imports or exports of machinery, motors, etc., but the trade balance here is probably against Canada. In any event, we find that, though varying somewhat since the war, the estimated yearly per capita figure has reached a high of 18 pounds. This is practically on a par with the United States. The rest of the world uses an average of about 2 pounds per capita, yearly, though this includes some countries, such as Sweden, Germany and England, which consume much better than average quantities. It looks, therefore, as if the Canadian copper industry has not (as has been generally charged) been asleep after all.

"Steel making technology poses strong potentials for environmental protection in three direction. One is pollution control on steel making process itself. Japanese steel industry has cut down various type of emission drastically since 1970's. Secondary, those process technology can be applied to reduce environmental burden in other industrial sectors. One of the successful examples is municipal waste treatment facility. Thirdly, development of high performance steel products, such as high strength steel for automobile body, can contribute to improve environmental performance during their use, based on the concept of life cycle assessment. "The advent of digital revolution has now enabled us with numerous tools that could be leveraged to transform our operational data into actionable insights. Key opportunities with digitization include better visualization, transparency, integrated planning and execution for value-chain optimization, that results in smarter production, intelligent response to changes in ore, process and equipment conditions, reduce energy and waste along with prevention of asset breakdown, safety and environmental issues. "Understanding the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of materials plays a significant role in the safety design of critical components used in aerospace and automotive industries, such as engine blocks and cylinder heads, which undergo the cyclic change of temperature and stress. However, the cyclic changes of temperature, stress and strain make it difficult using the traditional testing methods to accurately simulate the TMF process. In the present work, the Gleeble® 3800 system was successfully applied to develop a reliable procedure to measure the TMF behavior of aluminum alloys. The modified setup together with the new designed program allows the Gleeble system to precisely simulate the cyclic profiles of temperature and mechanical strain. The novel procedure includes the calibration and verification of the TMF setup to ensure the test validity with Young’s modulus measurement, multi-cycle measurement of the thermal strain and zero stress adjustment followed by online monitoring the TMF cycles. The results of the TMF testing of an AA6061 alloy under cyclic temperatures (60–300°C) and various strain amplitudes (0.2–0.6%) were demonstrated. Its TMF behavior was characterized by the typical hysteresis loops and cyclic stress-strain response.INTRODUCTION The thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviour becomes increasing important to evaluate the elevated-temperature properties of materials used as the critical components in automotive and aerospace industries, such as the gas turbines (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Moverare, 2007; Segersäll et al., 2015) and engine blocks (Grieb, Christ & Plege, 2010; Javidani & Larouche, 2014). During the cycles of start-up and shutdown of the engines, these components undergo a complex change of loading. Meanwhile, a dramatic temperature gradient exists on the components due to the cooling system. Therefore, the cyclic changes of load and temperature can give rise to the TMF and may limit the use life of such components (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Moverare, 2007). Hence, performing the TMF tests to precisely simulate the cyclic changes of load and temperature to understand the TMF behaviours of materials is playing a significant role in the safety design of these components. For TMF tests, two principal types of cycles are generally employed, including the in-phase (IP) cycle where the load and temperature are at the same phase (i.e. maximum load at highest temperature) and out-of-phase (OP) cycle where the maximum load is applied at minimum temperature (Kliemt, 2012; Miller, 2014). The most significant damage mechanisms in engine components are reported to be OP TMF cycles (Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Kliemt, 2012)."

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

A series of six papers describing the Falconbridge Dominicana Ferronickel project were presented at the International Laterite Symposium held as a joint project of TMS-AIME in February 1979 at New Orleans. A review of the ore mineralogy, as well as. the processing and environmental practices as they exist today at Falcondo with emphasis on modifications put into practice since 1979 are presented in two papers: Part I.- Mineralogy and Ore Dressing E.W. Lithgow - General Superintendent ? Mines Falconbridge Dominicana, C. por A. Bonao, Dominican Republic Commercial volumes of nickeliferous laterite ores overlie part of a 90 km long belt of peridotites in central Dominican Republic. Protores are serpentinized harzburgites and dunites, with lesser serpentinite. The ore mineralogy consists mostly of goethite, serpentine-group minerals, quartz and poorly crystallized, X- ray amorphous materials. Minor constituents are hematite, gibsite, olivine and enstatite. In the Ore Dressing plant, the mine feed is subjected initially to proper sizing and blending to produce a homogenized mix. Subsequent drying and upgrading, by selective crushing and screening of rock kagments through a Barmac circuit, complete preparation of the ore for pyrometallurgical processing. Part II.- Pyrometallurgy, Fuel and Power Generation J.H. Comgan - Manager ? Production Falconbridge Dominicana, C. por A. Bonao, Dominican Republic Falcondo's energy requirements are based on oil which is refined on site to provide distillate to carry out drying and selective reduction of the nickeliferous ore in the shaft furnaces, plus bunker oil to produce electrical power for process melting, refining and ancillary use. The dryer product at 1.68% Ni is briquetted and passed counter current to hot reducing gas in 12 vertical shaft furnaces. The hot calcine discharge is melted in two high power electric furnaces at very high secondary voltage. The crude ferronickel is ladle refined and cast as 15 kg ingots or 125 gm ferrocones.

Thus as the wire is consumed by the explosive in the blast hole, the change in resistance is monitored and when this data is plotted against the time period of the in hole explosion, the VOD can be calculated.

A real-time transient pipeline simulation was used to model the operational pressure response in the concentrate and tailings pipelines of the Minera Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. A high-fidelity simulator was needed to train the operators on safe operation of the pipeline for different scenarios. A simulator that solves the transient equations was used to dynamically predict the pressure and flow throughout the pipeline to provide real-time responses to operational changes such as opening or closing a choke valve, or sending a water batch. Slurry rheological properties were incorporated into the model. This paper presents the technical background of the pipeline simulation model and the study of slurry properties. The paper shows the results of the transient simulation for different operating scenarios such as start-up, shutdown and leakage, by presenting the hydraulic gradient curves for each case. Finally, the paper briefly presents how the simulator was connected to an emulated control system and used to train the operator, it demonstrates the most effective tool available to learn to resolve undesirable conditions.

"SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Because of the collisional environment directly measuring such dynamical loads is extremely difficult if not impossible. In this study we tried to evaluate the liner failure risk by simulating the collisions of solid particles with mill liner using Discrete Element Method (DEM). DEM simulation has been proved to be a very useful tool in evaluation of granular flow and its impacts on the solid structure. But there are certain limits in DEM coherently, such as the number of solid elements, the computer runtime, etc. Here we first present the general feature of the particle-liner collision in terms of impact force and collision energy. Then the effects of parameter selection is discussed. Our simulations show the fatal collisional event of huge impact force is very rare and the collisional events of low impact is much more frequent. The fatal event may contribute most to the liner failure. The rarity of the fatal events may be missed in a short runtime simulation. This technical challenge combined with lacking of criterion to evaluate varying impact loads in fatigue problems may further complicate the evaluation. Should we use the largest impact force alone or we should use the more frequent events is an open question and requires more effort. In order to evaluate the quality of liner design, we proposed a relative comparison method. In the end we show the implication and application of this method in liner optimization by a work example. In particular, the effects of the charge level of grinding balls and their size on the operation performance is presented.INTRODUCTION Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps of mineral processing. A variety of grinding mills such as rod mills, ball mills, semi-autogenous (SAG) mills and autogenous (AG) mills are being utilized for comminution of mineral ores (Gupta & Yan, 2016). Up to today, SAG mills and AG mills have been widely used to reduce operation costs and increase throughput. In an AG mill, a rotating drum throws larger rocks of ore in a cascading motion which causes impact breakage of larger rocks and compressive grinding of finer particles. Unlike AG mills, SAG mills use steel grinding balls to break ores of size quite small such that they cannot be easily broken in AG mill. SAG mill liners are designed for protecting the mill shell and providing lifting power for ore charge and grinding media. Due to the impacts from the charge and the grinding media, the liner experiences dimple, plastic deformation, strain hardening, fatigue, peening and final failure. Quality and performance of SAG mill liners play a fundamental role to enhance efficiency of grinding mills, because failure of liners is the major cause for unexpected breakdown (Banisi, Hadizadeh, Mahmoudabadi, & Eilkhany, 2006)."

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

Controlling a wide range of minerals processes with single control system is an ordinary way to operate in mines all over the world these days. However the potential of these systems is not yet fully recognized nor utilized. The key issue is to manage the information in a way that enables automating the day-to-day tasks, quality control and safety functions. At the same time it provides means for optimization and constant improvement of processes creating a working environment where the system helps employees to do their key tasks instead of searching, modifying, and transmitting the huge number of information arising every day. The distribution of control system nodes enables the other processes to run heedless of a problem occurring in one of the sub-processes. Also the control room can be in remote location such as in large city removing the need to travel substantially long distances to plant sites every day. When all essential information is brought to the same place there is less risk for a mishap to happen due to information breaks that are often the cause of them. One of the biggest single reasons that result in production losses are break downs of machinery usually caused by normal wear, misuse, incorrect utilization rate etc. For this reason it is important to measure the condition of machines using vibration measurement and diagnostics. By moving from failure or time-based maintenance towards predictive or performance maintenance generates eventually a steady and predictable process but also results in significant long term savings. The mineral process at Talvivaara mine is based on bioheapleaching, whereby metals are leached from ore as a result of bacterial action. Bioleaching is a fairly new technology used in metals recovery. Therefore it is important for the mine to collect and analyze data from different stages of the minerals process. Talvivaara mine?s Metso DNA system has integrated machine condition monitoring and information management. These are not only necessary but also crucial in environmental conditions where the outside temperature can drop below -35°C, where ice and snow dominate the landscape and impact the equipment for four months a year and where distances between equipment can be up to 7.5 kilometers.
