We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), which will be held in Dallas, TX. This year’s conference will showcase the continued trend of strong industry interest, as there will be a record setting 115 papers being presented over the course of three days. The set of papers compiled in this book captures the latest and greatest information on a broad array of topics within our fascinating tunneling industry. We hope that the compilation of selected papers in this book will provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of future reference for contractors, engineers, and anyone in general who is a student of our beloved and unique industry. Since its inception in 1972, RETC has been the preeminent tunneling forum to promote ideas, tell stories, share lessons learned, and promote new technologies. RETC prides itself on its focus towards highlighting real-world experiences and practical ideas, with the intent to help the entire industry learn from one another and grow. The need for us all to stay sharp and remain on the cutting edge of technology has never been stronger – the technology and ideas that have been applied in aerospace are now attempting to mix with tunneling, and the advancement of AI continues to permeate all industries. However, no amount of technology or AI can fully replace the human element, and in our tunneling industry, the human element is key and is what sets us apart. In tunneling, every project is different, because the ground is always different. We can only take what the ground will give us, and we must rely on our past experiences to get through present day challenges. Most importantly, we must rely on each other. This is the heart of what RETC is all about. For those of you attending this conference, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible and engage with your colleagues to discuss during the breaks in between sessions. This sharing of ideas is what keeps us connected and helps to expand our industry. Please also try to engage with the scholarship students and the newcomers who will be in attendance, as it is the new ideas and fresh energy from the next generation that will continue to make our industry thrive into the future. The program chairs thank and greatly appreciate the efforts made by our session chairs, co-chairs, authors, the members of the RETC Executive Committee, and most importantly the SME staff towards making this RETC possible.

Mining operations present a very different environment to the suppliers of explosives, initiating systems and services, both on surface and underground. Typical hazards include underground movement, air quality, ground stability, moving equipment, and the use of explosives. As contractors to the mining industry we do not have management control over the environment in which our people operate. The hazards and consequent level of risk that our people are exposed to in some mining operations are significantly higher by orders of magnitude than in a normal factory environment. Orica Explosives (and other Explosives suppliers) are continually and increasingly identifying opportunities to partner with customers by adding value through the provision of services leading to a reduction in total mining costs. These services include the provision of a bulk underground loading services, delivery of product into underground magazines, magazine management, value added blasting, conversions, rock-on-ground contracts, and blast management programs.

The silver-rich cobalt-nickel arsenides ores of the Cobalt area in Ontario, Canada were mined for silver from about 1904 to 1985. The ores contained about 8 oz to 100 oz Aglt and about 1 wt% Ni and 2 wt% Co. They were processed by gravitational techniques, screening and flotation to produce separate silver and Fe-Co-Ni arsenide concentrates. The silver concentrate was smelted, and in some cases the arsenide concentrate was sold to custom smelters which recovered silver and other metals. The ores display a wide variety of textures and contain many minor and trace elements. This paper presents an evaluation of mineral characteristics that have a bearing on extractive metallurgy and smelting of this type of ore.

The purpose of this paper is to explain the basic structure of how minerals are marketed, whilst highlighting the essential factors that mine management needs to be confident are incorporated into a mineÆs marketing strategy. The traditional mine management approach to marketing has been to defer its scrutiny to the marketing manager and take a largely passive role. It is this paperÆs assertion that mine management needs to become more proactive and provide greater strategic input into the marketing process. Irrespective of what mineral your mine produces, the key marketing principles remain constant and need to be understood and managed to extract the full benefit on behalf of the mining asset. From a mine management perspective, success is ultimately linked to understanding these marketing principles and ensuring that they are effectively addressed by your mineÆs marketing strategy. This paper will unashamedly attempt to simplify marketing by explaining how the basic fundamentals of supply and demand set market direction, the importance of a comprehensive marketing strategy, the importance of customer relationships and how contracts and prices are typically negotiated. This paper will use examples from the metallurgical coal (met coal) industry to highlight these points. The paper will also provide a template for developing the critical mine interaction that needs to exist between the marketing department and management to develop a æwhole of mineÆ approach to marketing. It is this core group that will be strategically responsible for delivering the commitments your mine has made to your customers. For mine management not to be actively involved in this process puts at æriskÆ the hard won production and cost efficiencies achieved at your mine and ignores the opportunity to maximise your current and future revenue streams. And whilst this paper recognises that is arguably unreasonable for mine management to become æmarketing expertsÆ, it also argues that it is unreasonable for a mine management to divorce themselves from the process.

The last decade of national water reform implementation has improved the availability and efficiency of water source allocation in Western Australia. However, it is critical to recognise that the concurrent mining boom witnessed the approach of full water allocation limits, and increasing trends in mineral processing, water infrastructure costs, and wastewater management costs. Water supplies are commonly viewed as absolutely critical to project feasibility in mining, industrial and energy generation projects, even if considered 'non-core business'.   An increasing density of mining projects and industrial estates in Western Australia (WA) creates an opportunity for water infrastructure cost sharing and synergies. The WA government and its agencies have given preliminary consideration to the establishment of independent water utilities in the goldfields (Kalgoorlie), the Pilbara, and Collie regions, and in the Kwinana Industrial Area. The impending Oakajee industrial area and Mid West regional development, and Anketell port in the East Pilbara, could also be considered for common non-municipal water supplies.   The critical issue of apparent commercial risk due to the large scale of water demands and the low customer numbers in the minerals sector relative to other water markets is expected to mandate government partnership in any non-municipal water utility ownership. The commercial feasibility risk is observed as a risk to water supply security for potential mining and industrial customers. Absence of proper water infrastructure planning and governance has the potential to create infrastructure access issues as observed for Pilbara rail developments under the Trade Practices Act 1974.   Other aspects of water cycle management which could be addressed by a non-municipal utility include resumption of mine dewatering water (required changes to WA legislation that are progressing) and consolidated wastewater management for maximising synergy or reuse opportunities and minimising cumulative environmental impacts.   Address of water infrastructure planning for non-municipal water demands must cover commercial and environmental sustainability outcomes to successfully progress minerals sector growth in the State.

This is the 3rd Paper in a series by this author, the first two being published at the two previous International Conferences. Since the Aachen Conference, Rio Tinto has carried out an extensive benchmarking exercise to see how we are positioned with respect to other leading companies (in our sector and other sectors of major economic importance). We need to be sure that Rio Tinto is at the forefront of best practises in Sustainable Development (SD) and is using the most effective tools and methods. This paper will present key findings from this work. Rio Tinto Minerals, working as representatives of IMA-Europe was a leading contributor to the European Commission DG Enterprise Voluntary Reporting Scheme for SD Indicators in the Non-Energy Extractive Industry. In Rio Tinto Minerals we have been using these SDIs in the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to business value in: deepening customer relationships, eco-efficiency of operations, land use planning and permitting for new and expanding facilities, community relations, policy engagement with government authorities and strengthening the bond between the company and employees. We continue to support the Voluntary SDI Reporting Scheme, considering it to be important in the expanding EU and as a model for other regions globally. For example we have ore suppliers in developing countries and we use these SDIs in assisting them to better their performance, for we have an obligation to use our influence for continuous improvement. The paper will describe this work. Over the last 12 months our company has created a new Industrial Minerals unit called Rio Tinto Minerals which brings together all the borates, talc and salt operations, R&D, marketing, sales and customer care worldwide. The paper will present also the new Sustainability Policy of Rio Tinto Minerals.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. One of the key elements of change in the mining industry has been the ever-increasing integration and coordination of previously highly segregated business disciplines, the extent to which the marketing and finance functions have evolved and merged within the mining industry. If one listens to the language of mine product marketers today, one hears terms like contango, backwardation, forwards, options, min/max, synthetics, swaptions, caps, collars, FRA's, spot deferreds, double bottom, head and shoulders. The list is endless and a glossary may be out-of-date even before the ink is dry. No longer can a marketer of mine products get through the day and, more importantly, keep his or her job merely by reciting statistics on supply, demand, prices and the jargon of quotational periods, delivery and payment terms. Walk into the office of any marketing department today, and computer terminals spewing on-line market prices and instantaneous news retrieval command the attention of all who enter. Traditionally, mining companies, particularly those in North America, took a passive view toward marketing their products and an even more passive view toward management of price risk. The typical, albeit simplified, gold producer of the 1970s and early 1980s spent all of its energy exploring, delineating, developing and producing a product that was placed by the mine gate. Like magic, anonymous buyers took it away and left piles of dollars in its place. No fuss, no muss and nothing to get in the way of more exploring, delineating, producing etc. The typical copper producer, meanwhile, was slightly more creative. Copper producers still spent most of their energy exploring, producing etc., but they at least acknowledged the identity of their customers. Many even went so far as to fabricate finished mine products into shapes and sizes that their ultimate customer needed. Wire, cable, sheet and extrusions were all in forms ready to be purchased by power companies, motor manufacturers and telephone companies. But, while production and costs steadily increased, research and development into new expanding markets was funded by little more than lip service. Competitors and competitive products steadily eroded market share and realized prices. The now-famous Business Week magazine cover that proclaimed "The Death of Mining" was an imminent reality.

"Recent process advances at Lac Minerals Est Malartic Division are discussed. The Est Malartic mill treats massive sulphide, copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine, to produce a gravity gold product, a copper flotation concentrate and a gold precipitate. The mill operation has been improved by the application of Knelson concentrators to replace jigs, the application of Outukumpu high grade tank cells and optimizing the cyanide leach to minimize cyanide consumption.IntroductionThe Est Malartic mill is located near the town of Malartic in the Abitibi Region of north western Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid- J 930's processing mainly clean, free milling gold ore. Active mining from the Est Malartic mine ceased in 1980 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that modification of the Est Malartic mill to handle this new ore source was economically more attractive than building a new facility on site. Modifications to the mill to process the high copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and the new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leach circuit continued operating on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. An SO,/air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at this time."

When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic applications, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while Loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including, particle size, density and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. Since its inception, in 1987, the Copper-Cobre series of conferences has established itself as the prime world forum for discussing advances in copper process metallurgy, in particular copper sulfide smelting, copper recovery by leaching and electrowinning and copper electrorefining. All copper producing countries have actively participated in the pyrometallurgy symposia held in the framework of these conferences. In 1999 and 2003, the close to 100 pyrometallurgy papers that were presented had to be accommodated in two volumes. In the present paper, the authors firstly provide a brief historical sketch of the Copper-Cobre conferences and then focus on providing a retrospective look at the dramatic changes that have taken place in copper smelting in the last few decades, primarily as discussed in the Copper-Cobre and precursor conferences pyrometallurgy proceedings. Topics include: the development of autogenous, increasingly more intensive, environmentally sound and energy efficient smelting processes; significant improvements in Peirce-Smith converting practice and at the same time the commercialization of alternative continuous converting routes; the consequent expansion and modernization of smelters; the increasing compliance with strict government environmental regulations in most copper producing regions of the world; the realignment of the copper smelting industry throughout the world; and trends in copper smelting R&D. A look at the future closes these reflections on the contribution of the Copper-Cobre conferences to the advancement of copper smelting technology.

The bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contribu- tions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular of information more accurate, or may aid in developing more fully the files pertaining to pyrites.

Introduction Mining has always been sensitive to the fluctuating income of downstream customer industries. The industry is now becoming more vulnerable to booms and busts as economic pulsations increase and demand for mining products shows little or no long-term growth. As the general economy has become more cyclical in the last decade, the capital-intensive primary industries have become more aware that timing as well as preparation of survival plans are vital in investment decisions. Strangely, however, some of us have not yet included the business cycle in our feasibility studies. Cyclic prices and volumes and fluctuations in profits and cash flows do not fit our linear models. The increased cyclical nature of our economy is recent and poorly understood. Forecasting peaks and troughs is still more an art than a science. Nevertheless, avoiding business cycle parameters can lead to error in value estimation and contingency planning of new projects. Metal and Mineral Industries More than half the iron and steel, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and chrome that we mine, smelt, upgrade, and recycle goes to construction, transportation, capital goods, and consumer durable industries. All are cyclical. Their products are consumed slowly, so replacement can be postponed in recessions. Purchases of such goods are usually financed by debt, and their customers are sensitive to highly cyclical changes in interest rates. During prosperous periods, people tend to buy capital goods despite high interest rates. Upstream industries also tend to be whipsawed by inventory cycles. With high interest rates and good transportation, downstream fabricators can lighten their inventories during recessions. They know that upstream suppliers can deliver supplies and raw materials immediately, And, with the advent of electronic accounting, the fabricator with timely inventory information can afford to hold fewer contingency stocks. Likewise, when recovery returns, inventories surge back through industry pipelines, accelerating demands on primary supplies. The price elasticity of most primary products is low. Their share of the value of finished products of the industries they supply is generally small. The 60 kg (130 lb) of aluminum in a car is vital. But whether it costs $80 or $130 will not visibly influence the demand for an automobile. With low elasticities of demand, the primary producer is hit with decreases (or increases) in prices and in sales volume, during recessions as well as recoveries.

Some years ago, at the plant of the Baltimore Copper Smelting & Rolling Co., the receipt of large quantities of copper blister running high in lead, nickel, and arsenic resulted in the formation of a great amount of very foul slag, in the anode furnaces. A typical analysis of this slag was: Gold, oz. per ton......... 0.09 Arsenic, per cent.......... 0.60 Silver, oz. per ton......'.. 13.20 Antimony, per cent........ 0.50 Copper, per cent......... 19.50 Silica, per cent............ 28.30 Lead, per cent........... 11.90 FeO, per cent............. 19.20 Nickel, per cent.......... 4.60 CaO, per cent............. 1.60 The problem was to get out the copper in marketable form, to save the gold, silver, and particularly the nickel, and to get rid of as much as possible of the lead, arsenic, and other elements that were valueless to the Baltimore plant. In a copper refinery that does not take custom material for matte smelting, the usual method is to smelt the anode slag with coke in a reducing furnace, the black copper thus formed being sent back to the anode furnaces; this was the custom at Baltimore. An average anode slag will contain, perhaps, 40 per cent. copper and such small quantities of lead, nickel, etc., that smelting will get rid of most of these impurities in the black-copper furnace slag. To treat such an impure slag in this way, however, would result in a large nickel loss, and would send back to the anode furnaces all the lead and nickel not so lost, where it would be slagged off again and returned to the black-copper furnace as a slag still more concentrated in impurities. The result would probably be a constantly increasing amount of anode slag containing a likewise constantly increasing percentage of impurities. To avoid such a disastrous closed circuit some other process had to be devised. A small multiple-tank room, built for impure copper as an adjunct to the main series electrolytic refinery, was available, so the following standard process was suggested:

With this expanded focus comes the need to improve processes more openly, more iteratively and more collaboratively. This presentation will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new strategies such as self-serve business intelligence, data mining, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration. "One of the thrust areas for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program is the development of actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor. Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel has an extensive fast reactor irradiation history and thus is being considered for use as a baseline composition from which minor actinides (MA) can be incorporated for use as a transmutation fuel. This study involves characterization of precursor powders and pellets to be inserted into the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho. These pellets will have three compositions: one standard MOX composition, (U80Pu20)O1.98, and two compositions of MA-MOX with oxygen to metal ratios (O/M) of (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.98 and (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.95. The precursor powders, which consisted of, highly enriched uranium oxide, HEUO2, depleted uranium oxide, DUO2, neptunium oxide, NpO2, americium oxide, AmO2, and plutonium oxide, PuO2, were characterized using a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) for particle morphology, size, and size distribution prior to pellet production.IntroductionThe Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) was created in order for “fuel-cycle supplier” nations to provide assured supplies of nuclear fuel to “fuel-cycle customer” nations. The customer nations would utilize the fuel for electricity generation and subsequently return it to the supplier nation after it is spent. This spent fuel would then be reprocessed by the supplier nation in order to recycle the actinide constituents, mainly uranium and plutonium, in advanced nuclear power reactors, and thus reducing waste volumes [1, 2]. Nuclear materials would also be strictly controlled through the International Atomic Energy Agency. One of the thrust areas for the GNEP program is the development of these actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor under the U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) in order to transmute long-lived transuranic actinide isotopes into shorter-lived fission products [3]."

Copper metal is produced in large or small tonnages in almost all countries of the world—handling raw materials in the form of either as-mined or milled ores, custom concentrates, or other custom materials including scrap and recycled copper. The scale of operations and type of technologies used around the world varies widely. There is a certain concentration of both mining and smelter-refinery production as a total of ten countries produce some 80% of world mined copper, while ten countries—mostly different ones— produce about 80% of smelted and refined copper. As a result, international copper trade is significant. The present paper takes the reader on a virtual tour of the copper plants throughout the world with a focus on smelter facilities. Operations and technology employed at each plant visited are discussed including a brief historical sketch. Future trends identified during the world tour are also discussed. The present authors considered sufficient time was required for a thorough study tour and settled on eighty days—the same as that for the celebrated fictional story of world circumnavigation in the 1870s. INTRODUCTION The celebrated French writer Jules Verne published his book “Around the world in 80 days” in English in1873 and it is the story of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout circumnavigating the world in 80 days in the fall of 1872 on a £20,000 wager (equivalent to over 2 million pounds today) from the exclusive Reform club in London. This is an interesting period for copper as it started trading on the London metals Exchange in 1876 and the start of global copper production chains started to take off at this time with the rapidly increasing electrification of the world. The production chain includes mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining and fabrication. Since 1880 annual world copper production has increased by over 150 times from 154,000 tonnes in 1880 (nominally considered as smelted copper—essentially the only route at the time to marketable copper) to over 23 million tonnes today (including total refined copper of 19 million tonnes of smelted copper including scrap and 4 million tonnes by solvent extraction-electrowinning), in tandem with increased electricity usage, along with significant transportation usage and for manufactured products (Figure 1).

The Fresnillo Company's mill at Fresnillo, State of Zacatecas, Mexico, treats oxide ores from the Fresnillo mine, dump ores and underground ores from the Plateros district, company leases and custom ores from the Zacatecas district, custom ores from other districts and tailings from old dumps at Fresnillo. The normal capacity of the mill is approximately 2600 dry short tons per 24 hours (a ton of 2000 lb.). The final product of the mill is a precipitate containing gold and silver, which is smelted and shipped as doré bullion to the refinery of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S.A., at Monterrey, State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The geology of the district was described in 1923, by T. C. Baker,' from whose paper the following data have been taken: The mineralization of the district was effected in the Tertiary period, following the intrusions and preceding the appearance of the flows. The area within which productive veins have been found is 1 mile long by 1/2 mile wide. The important units of each of the four general fracture systems meet in the central portion of Proano hill, which is an outcrop of graywacke, and where the rock was also intensely fractured by subsidiary movements, resulting in a shattered zone 1200 ft. long by 400 ft. wide. The mineralization was more intense in the immediate vicinity of the principal channels through which the solutions rose. The valuable metals are silver and gold, the ratio by weight of the former to the latter being 1000 to 1.5. Argentite is the predominant silver mineral, and is associated with pyrite and manganese mineral. The sulfides are primary throughout. A slight secondary action is represented by small quantities of native silver and silver halides, principally cerargyrite, which are found in the upper part of the mine. Oxidation has penetrated with great thoroughness to the lowest horizon so far exposed, this being 420 ft. below the present ground-water level. The shattered mass within the central portion of the hill and near the surface was sufficiently mineralized to produce a large stockwork

"Increasing material conversion and energy efficiency, and decreasing carbon dioxide emission levels are crucial for sustainable production processes in the aluminum, cooper, and steel industries. RHI supports these targets by providing a diverse range of solutions including high quality refractory linings, optimum lining maintenance, and process improvements. In this paper examples are provided of process improvements and increased energy efficiency in copper refining, potential energy savings during electric arc furnace and ladle operations in the steel industry, and increased energy efficiency by improved heat transfer in anode baking furnaces in the aluminum industry. In all cases, RHI’s expertise in close collaboration with the customer resulted in an improved performance of the reactor lining and the actual high temperature process with a positive impact on the material conversion and energy efficiency and as a result a decrease in specific carbon dioxide emission levels.IntroductionRefractory linings play an important role in heat transfer during high temperature processes in for example the aluminum, copper, and steel production industries. Due to constantly increasing energy prices worldwide and the increasing demands for environmental and climate protection, improving the energy efficiency and decreasing emission levels of these energy intensive production processes is of significant importance. In this paper, the contribution of modern RHI lining technologies to energy saving measures and the corresponding reduction of specific carbon dioxide emission are described. The type of current refractory solutions for energy intense processes are illustrated with four examples: Optimization and increase of material conversion and energy efficiency in copper refining, energy saving potentials in both electric arc furnace and transport ladle operations in the steel industry, and heat transfer improvements during the carbon anode annealing process in the aluminum industry. These examples focus on particular production processes operating with a high proportion of recycled copper, steel, and carbon anodes. Increased energy efficiency directly decreases the specific energy related carbon emission levels whereas improvements to the metallurgical processes aim to increase material conversion efficiency and, therefore, decrease specific process related carbon emission levels. Significant energy savings can be achieved by maximizing the refractory campaign length through a combination of appropriate refractory material selection, grade zoning, correct installation, careful preheating, and effective maintenance strategies. Besides the efforts to improve the performance and energy efficiency of customer high temperature processes, RHI continuously promotes the development of new low emission carbon-containing refractory bricks and unshaped products."
