"The macrosegregation patterns and convective behavior of a Pb-5wt%Sb-35wt%Sn alloy are studied using new numerical treatments of solid particle motion and of transport phenomena occurring during the solidification of ternary metal systems. At this composition, the solidification which occurs while the local liquid composition is in the (Pb)-(SbSn) binary eutectic trough has a significant effect on these phenomena. The effects of this solidification path on fluid flow and macrosegregation are compared to the more familiar binary alloy patterns and the effect of solid particle transport is evaluated. The final predictions of macrosegregation are compared to measured composition profiles. IntroductionThe macroscopic maldistribution of alloy constituents during solidification, commonly called macrosegregation, is a defect which occurs in real metal processing systems. This nonuniformity of species distribution, especially when it forms a high composition gradient or a poor distribution of secondary phases, can lead to areas of high stress concentration, which contribute to cracking during extrusion or forging of wrought alloys or when an as-cast piece is severely loaded in service [1, 2]. Macrosegregation studies in binary systems have become quite common since the introduction of single-domain numerical models which feature one set of conservation equations and boundary conditions for an entire, fixed computational domain containing solid, liquid and multiphase regions. A complete review up to 1995 has been presented by Prescott and Incropera [3]. However, most commercial alloys generally have more than two species in amounts significant enough to affect the convective flows which lead to macrosegregation and other defects. The formation of secondary solid phases, including eutectic and peritectic reactions, also may occur in commercial metal alloys and should be treated using appropriate thermodynamic models."

LEAD smelting has been an important industry in Utah for many years. The first lead smelting was done, over 60 years ago, at the Rollins mine in Beaver County, by burning heaps consisting of alternate layers of wood and high-grade carbonate ore. The lead thus obtained was. molded into bullets. With the development of. the mines, the problem of cheaper handling of the ore became important. The only outlet for this ore was Swansea or the Atlantic Coast but to ship to either cost $150 per ton or more for treatment and handling. From 1864 to 1871, experimenting was done with blast, Scotch hearth, and reverberatory furnaces, with the blast furnace surviving as, the standard plant. The first crude furnaces were circular or hexagonal in shape, and were made of adobe and stone, which quickly burned out. They were small, about 2 1/2 ft. in diameter, and smelted from 3 to 10 tons. in 24 hr. The metal had to be tapped from the bottom of the crucible, necessitating a shut down of the furnace during this process. This pro¬cedure caused salamanders to form around the tap hole when the furnace was started again, which frequently resulted in freezing. The campaign lasted until a tap of bullion was made. The first successful plant of the crude stone type was operated in 1870. From 1870 to 1872, there was a smelter building craze in the state. During that period, about 20 furnaces were built, chiefly near the mines, and their operation was limited and sporadic. The work was then placed in the hands of trained metallurgists, who standardized on the rectangular form of furnace. In 1871, Daggett, at the Winnamuck mine in Bingham, installed water-jackets around the smelting zone of the furnaces. These furnaces were circular; the diameter at the tuyere line was 3 ft. 6 in. and at the charge floor 5 ft. 3 in. This article advances an innovative concept explaining the connotation and technical system of "green" mining. The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.

Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

In this paper current net present value (NPV) based mine valuation techniques that take into account market and private risk are discussed and analysed. Potential pitfalls that arise from the application of a portfolio, market or commodity based risk metric to a mining project are identified. An alternative non-simulative framework for quantifying and factoring market and private risk in NPV calculations is proposed and then applied to a hypothetical case study in an attempt to overcome identified pitfalls. Mathematical proof that a static discounted cash flow (DCF) calculation can underestimate or overestimate mine NPV is presented, the conditions for each are outlined and the degree of underestimation defined.CITATION:Dube, T Y, 2012. The Bureau of Mines estimated the cost for ,3 uranium ion-exchange recovery system using five grades of 17.0, leach solution producing 815,570 pounds of U 0? per year from an ammonium bicarbonate in situ leach solution. The system flowsheet consisted of four unit operations: (1) Multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) absorption; (2) MCIX elution; (3) precipitation of the uranium as yellow cake, filtering, calcining, and packaging; and (4) waste disposal. The total fixed capital cost of a system treating 2,000 gallons per minute of 0.1-gram-per-liter-U308 leach solution was estimated as $6,888,000. For n basic case of an MCIX system depreciating in 9 years, unit production cost of U308 was $3.51 per pound. A decrease in feed solution grade from 0.[4] to 0.03 gram per liter increased the production cost exponentially. Shorter depreciating periods significantly increased the production cost particularly for the lower grade feed solutions.

The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.

EXPERIMENTAL work conducted at the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory of the University of California by L. C. Uren, J. Domercq, Jr., and J. Mejia has shown that small diameter wells offer tremendous resistance to the flow of fluids in their immediate vicinity. This resistance is due in part to the constriction of the area through which the fluids must pass as they approach the wall of the well, but is also accentuated by the increased volume which results from gas expansion. The latter in turn is a function of the deduction in pressure, the fundamental cause of fluid movement. If the diameter of the bore is enlarged several diameters, the capacity of the well, or the volume of fluid passing per unit drop in pressure per unit of time, is greatly increased without necessitating such high fluid velocities. The fundamental features which should be taken into consideration in the design of casing joints were stressed by J. B. Graham and E. E. Smith. These involved such points as correct thread design, high efficiency, and small diameter, together with the insurance that leakage will absolutely be prevented. The practical features of such design were ably discussed by engineers from leading steel manufacturers.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of variations in content (near the residual level) of the impurities aluminum, nitrogen, manganese, and copper on the corrosion rate in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam of zircaloy-3, a zirconium-base alloy of 0.25 percent tin and 0.25 percent iron. Thirty-five 10-pound ingots were cast with the appropriate additions of impurity elements, and these were converted to wrought sheets. These specimens were then tested both in water and in steam. The analysis of the resulting data showed that in environments of either pressurized hot water or superheated steam, corrosion rates increased with increasing content of aluminum, nitrogen, or manganese, but were not affected by variations of copper. The effects of aluminum and nitrogen were found to be greater than the effect of manganese. INTRODUCTION At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in August 1956, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Bettis Plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp., began investigating the effects of certain impurity elements on the corrosion rates of zircaloy-3 in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam. It was necessary to know these effects in order to set control limits on residual impurity levels in zirnaloy-3, intended for heat transfer service in the nuclear reactor of the pressurized water type. A factorial expert it was designed by Westinghouse statisticians. The Atomic Energy Commission provided raw zirconium sponge purchased from Wah Chang Corp. The Bureau's laboratory at Albany, Oreg., made material of different combinations of impurity levels and subjected the material to corrosion tests. This report will describe the work done at the Bureau laboratory and will show, quantitatively the effects of different residual levels of aluminum or nitrogen, or manganese or copper on corrosion rates.

Radon in the Environment Radon, as a natural nobel gas, can be detected nearly everywhere in the environment as a decay product of ubiquitous uranium. As it is emanated from soil and rocks measurable concentrations have been found at the surface of soils and in even higher concentrations in enclosed spaces like, for example, mines and buildings. While above soil surface activities caused by radon have been found in an order of magnitude of up to 1 pCi/l (Weigel, F. 1978), concentrations in enclosed spaces and mines are higher because of the lack of atmospheric circulation. Beside air circulation the relevant figure depends on the Ra226-concentration in the surrounding rocks or building material, as well as on emanation coefficient and the diffusion coefficient. While representative Rn222concentrations in well ventilated buildings are reported to be in an order of magnitude of 1 pCi/l maximum values up to one order of magnitude higher have been found in badly ventilated brick buildings (Ettenhuber, E., Lehmann, R., Clajus, P., 1978) (Aitken, J.H., et al., 1977). Just now it was stated that the reduced air circulation due to German legal regulations on energy conservation will increase radon exposure of the public considerably (Jacobi, W., 1979). Radon in Mines Radon exposure of workers is, of course, a matter of concern in uranium ore mines where relatively high concentrations of the uranium to be mined are present. Measures to protect workers' health have been implemented, based on experience on dose-effect relationship. They serve to meet exposure standards by limiting inhalation of radioactive particles, in reducing radon concentrations or in limiting working hours. Both improved measuring devices and capacity as well as the lower discrimination threshold enable to measure radon concentrations in other mines, e.g. in coal mines. It is known that radioactivity in coal is small compared with that in other minerals and even soil, rocks. Nevertheless, radioactive elements were identified in coal and so the question was whether the concentrations of radon in coal mines might be a subject of concern. The problems encountered when measuring radon in coal mines are described below, as the measuring device has to be flame proofed which is an important additional requirement. Measured radon concentrations in British coal mines have already been published (Duggan, M.J., Howell, D.M., Soilleux, P.J., 1968 (Dungey, C.J., Hore, J., Walter, M.D., 1978). The authors found concentrations of up to 14 pCi/l in Cornish mines. In most cases the values were in the order of 2 pCi/l. These results were consistent with measurements reported from U.S.-coal mines (Lucas, H.F., Gabrush, A.F., 1966). Such concentrations of radon were not considered to represent a hazard for British miners (Ogden, T.L., 1974). In Germany, too, first measurements have been carried out in five coal mines in the Saarland in the 60's. Air samples were taken at different places in the coal mines, dried, fed to an ionisation cell and measured by a device including reference cells. Samples taken at ventilated places showed radon concentrations consistent with the lower British results. They all kept within the standards of the first German regulation on protection against radiation. Measuring the radon daughters was renounced because of the relatively low radon concentrations and the requirements for flame proofness in coal mines. Moreover, it can be ascertained that because of the effective ventilation the disequilibrium factor between the decay products and the radon concentration remains far below the value of one (Muth, H., 1978) (Keller, G.). In 1979 the committee on mine safety and health protection in coal and other mines of the EEC proposed to have measured and evaluated radon concentrations in European coal mines to find out whether they complied with international standards. Great Britain and Germany agreed to this proposal and by commissioning such measurements to scientific institutes complied with the request to harmonize the methods used. In the Federal Republic of Germany, e.g. Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) and Staatliches Materialprüfungsamt; Dortmund (MPA) were requested to carry out the measurements in coal mines of the Ruhr coalfield whereas Saarberg Interplan was responsible for the Saar coalfield. The WBK measurements are reported in later paragraphs.

As part of the development of a shopping center in West Virginia, a significant bench had to be cut into a mountainside that was over 700 ft. high. As a result, a steeply stepped, over 400-ft.- high wall was created. The high wall exposed old abandoned room-and-pillar coal workings at the toe of the cut. Because of exposure to the elements, the mine openings began to severely deteriorate with significant potential of undermining of the rock cut face and causing a large rock fall(s). Exacerbating this wall problem was a set of fairly planar sub-parallel and sub-vertical joints creating, in essence, thin rock slabs. Also present were stress relief fractures that were observed in the exposed pillars. Given the proximity of the project building to this high rock face, mitigation of the rock fall potential was deemed necessary. In order to prevent continued damage and deterioration of these exposed mine entries, the rubblized openings were filled with bulkhead grout and pressure injected with grout. The total amount of grout installed in these openings was about 3,945 CY. Also, a rock drape was attached to the entire face to mitigate small rock falls from natural causes. There also existed another level of mining below the ground surface and under an existing building at a depth of about 160 ft. Under a portion of the building, the pillars in these old works were second mined, and the building seemed to have been already affected by limited subsidence above this area. Also, calculated pillar safety factors in this high extraction section of the mine were too low. Consequently, these old works were stabilized by saturation grouting. An indication of overall roof distress was the significant fracturing encountered in the bedrock overburden during the drilling of the injection holes and the volume of grout placed in these holes. The total grout installed in the high extraction section of the lower mine was about 6,660 CY. This paper describes the investigation and the grouting techniques employed at the rock cut face and under the existing building to mitigate continued damage to avoid future subsidence problems at the face and the building premises.

In late October 1996, an acid plant at a major U.S. copper smelter was faced with unexpected and rapidly increasing pressure drop across the gas cooling tower in the acid plant, indicating a build-up on the packing. This threatened to halt operations if not resolved. Earlier that month, a smaller vessel in the acid plant was found to be completely plugged with lead sulfate. It was feared that a similar fate awaited the gas cooling tower unless the scale build-up was stopped. Although lead sulfate is present in most copper smelter acid plants, this accumulation was unusually severe. An investigation was launched to find the source of the lead, determine how lead is transported to the gas cooling tower, recommend operating practices to prevent such severe scaling, and seek ways to recycle the lead value in the scale covered polypropylene packing. Late in the investigation it was learned that the lead originated from an improperly executed recycling program.

THE idea of economical production is usually associated with large operations, tonnages, and mines, with even larger capital behind them. Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentage expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2: Development, including all necessary yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, drawslate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1 ½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the Beadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, however no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27º51S / 63º56 E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at water depth of about 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. There massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed. These chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground and pathways for fluid circulation, respectively.

In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to study the reduction behavior of composite pellets consisting two different types of iron oxide fines (high and low grade) and coke or lignite fines as reducing agents. The reduction experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions and constant flow of nitrogen gas in the temperature range of 900 ? 1100 oC. The variables investigated are the reduction temperature, Cfix/Fe3O4 ratio, reduction time and reductant type. In the experiments carried out with Sivas Divrigi A head magnetite ores (high grade) at a temperature of 1100 oC, for 40 minutes and on the condition that Cfix/Fe3O4 ratio is 0.2, in which lignite and coke fines were used as reductant, degree of reduction was obtained as 91 % and 86 %, respectively. Whereas, in the experiments realized with Malatya-Hekimhan-Hasançelebi magnetite ores (low grade) on the same conditions by using lignite as the reductant, around 60 % degree of reduction was found.

This paper deals with a complementary soil investigation which being part of the contract helped understand the behavior of a softened clay and adjusted the design of a retaining structure accordingly. The investigated softened clay proved to have lost its original strength but had maintained some characteristics of its stress history and in particular high horizontal stress. Pressuremeter tests and flat dilatometer tests were of interest to estimate the at rest earth pressure. A design consisting of a T-shaped slurry wall in conjunction with transverse walls was the most effective solution to cope with high active pressures and low passive pressures.

The purpose of this book is to present the practical side of economic geology concisely and in convenient form; established facts and the applications of accepted views are emphasized; theoretical discussions and questions of genesis are avoided. Coal, iron, and placer deposits are omitted; they are subjects of specialized study that are fully and concisely treated in other works. The reader is assumed to possess a knowledge of mineralogy, petrography, and elementary geology. The arrangement adopted is based on Kemp's theory of magmatic waters, on Lindgren's conclusions on hydrothermal and secondary alterations, and on the theories of secondary enrichment enunciated by Emmons and Weed. No general classification of ore deposits is attempted, nor is any attempt made to fill by hypothesis the wide gaps, nor to explain the apparent contradictions that rank economic geology among the most inexact of sciences. The present knowledge of the subject is too incomplete to warrant such broad generalizations. The demand for good properties generally exceeds the supply. While mines of the first rank will undoubtedly be discovered from time to time, it is probably true that a great proportion of deposits having outcrops of commercial grade or of evident promise have been recognized and explored. A review of mining conditions over long periods shows that the rich discoveries belong to pioneer days, and that as time goes on the more important developments are the result of lower working costs, improved metallurgical processes, and an increasing knowledge of economic geology.
