Recent work21"23 has led us to agree with him in reabandoning the ring mechanism in favor of a defect mechanism, most likely vacancies. On the other hand, we think that Hagel's attempt to group together all self-diffusion in bcc transition metals is wrong. We prefer the scheme of Peart, Graham, and omlin," who separate them into two groups. One group contains the anomalously behaved metals P titanium,', y uranium, and perhaps zirconim.' The other group contains a iron," this alloy was held at 1800°C for 2 hr before quenching, its structure was all a. B. C. Giessen, I. Rump, and N. J. Grant (Authors' reply)—We very much appreciate the discussion by Deardorff and Kato regarding the a to /3 transformation temperature of hafnium. In the W-Hf program, as well as in a current study of the system Cr-Hf, standard precautions were exercised against contamination, including vacua of less than 10"5 mm Hg and a weight control check of all specimens to insure an impurity rise of less than 100 ppm. Following receipt of the above discussion, a revision was made in the annealing process. Arc-cast specimens were etched with a 10 pct HF-90 pct HNO solution until 1 mm of surface, including a possible oxide film, was removed. Annealing was done in a hafnium container which provided a long diffusion path for gaseous contaminants. Finally, the heat treating time was shortened. Structural changes were noted to occur quite slowly. A 99.5 at. pct Hf alloy showed 70 pct /3 after 30 min at 1700°C and was 100 pct /3 after 10 min at 1715°C. After 24 hr at 1740C, the alloy was found to be 10 pct/3. This change is due to contamination; it was estimated that it corresponds to an increase of 60°C in the transformation temperature over a 24 hr period. The corresponding change in 30 rnin would be slight. Using the same hafnium as in the above publication, and three new alloys at 98, 99, and 99.5 at. pct Hf, the transformation temperature was indicated to be 1715" 15°C. Since this hafnium contained 4.4 at. pct Zr, a correction of 40 5C, based on an assumed approximately linear transformation temperature curve, must be made for pure hafnium. This yields a value of 1755 20°C in good agreement with Deardorff and Kato's value. Because the slope of the boundary is small, this permits a good extrapolation, and we regard the W-Hf alloys as well suited to check the Hf transformation temperature. niobirn,'' and molybdenum,22 whose activation energies correlate with the melting temperature and whose Do values follow Zener's predictions.28 We have no quarrel with Hagel's placing chromium into the second group; we disagree with his interpreting our data to make uranium fit into that group. Hagel considers that the measurements of self-diffusion in uranium below about 950°C represent combined volume and grain boundary diffusion. This contention is based on the curvature of the penetration plot for our 891°C run,4 which also has a nearly straight line plot of log c vs x. Hagel has extrapolated these characteristics to our 803.5C run and fitted his Arrhenius plot for self-diffusion in y uranium to our four highest temperature points only. We think this is wrong for the following reasons.

The Tri-State zinc-lead catalog, compilation of which was initiated by the Bureau of Mines in August 1949, is designed to provide a continuing record of avail-able drill-hole logs and maps of mine developments in the zinc-lead district in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma. The maps and data thus preserved constitute a reservoir of factual information readily available to individuals and firms interested in planning mineral explorations, to Government agencies for formulating estimates or ore reserves, and to the mining industry in the district for general uses. The areas to be included in the catalog embrace the explored and mined tracts within 760,000 acres of the more active western part of the district. The consensus among local mine operators, geologists, and mining engineers is that over 100,000 boles, costing more than $30,000,000, have been drilled in the district. Records of some of the early drilling and mine developments are destroyed or lost, but the Bureau of Mines has copies of about 47,500 drill-hole logs and is accumulating and recording on microfilm those that are currently available. As of May 1, 1954, the logs of approximately 28,000 drill holes had been microfilmed and are available for inspection at the Bureau of Mines office, Joplin, Mo.

The work described in this Bureau of Mines report was undertaken to fill a need of industry for high-temperature heat-content data for uranium tetrafluoride. Without such data, heat balance evaluations of processes involving this substance are seriously hampered. Measurements of the heat content of uranium tetrafluoride were conducted at temperatures from 298° to 1,350° K. The melting point and heat of fusion were determined. The results are presented in suitable tabular form, and representative heat-content equations are included.

Wyoming County had for many years supplied large quantities of coking coals to coke plants throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Up to the present most of the coal has been produced from relatively few beds, but in the future the coal will be produced from beds not previously mined in quantity. This trend is shown in the entire Winding Gulf field, of which Wyoming County is a part. This publication is one of a series of Bureau of mines reports appraising the Nation's coking coal, which y be used to determine the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. This investigation of the preparation characteristics of Wyoming County coals is the third of the series undertaken in West Virginia.

TWO serious hazards from coal dust confront the bituminous-coal miner- -a physical or safety hazard and a physiological or health hazard. The first threatens the miner with loss of life from coal-dint explosions, and the second with loss of health and earning capacity from inhaling large quantities of the dust. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that coal dust, except some grades of anthracite dust, is capable of initiating an explosion when no explosive gas is present and that its property of extending or propagating an explosion has been responsible for nearly all the widespread explosions that have occurred in bituminous mines in the United States in the present century. For years many mining people believed that low-volatile coal dust was not explosive but not only is it explosive but if the source of ignition is intense, it is as explosive as the dust of many high-volatile coals because the war is creating increased pressure for greater coal production and because of the trend toward greater mechanization in mines, explosion and health hazards from coal dust are likely !n increase considerably.

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. This paper describes the results of volumetric efficiency tests on oil well pumps handling gas oil mixtures. The work was performed in a large scale, above ground unit wherein test conditions could be accurately controlled and measured. The main variables studied were gas/oil ratio (including gas from solution and free gas mixed with oil), pump compression ratio, pump stroke length, pump speed, and clearance volume between the valves at their closest approach. Results are presented for two different pumps and for oils of two viscosities. Relatively small amounts of gas entering the pump resulted in large decreases in volumetric efficiency. Under conditions where the pump was operating at reduced efficiency because of the presence of gas, it was found that variation in the clearance volume between the standing and traveling valves had a considerable effect on pump efficiency level. This effect of the valve clearance volume was found to be significantly altered by the viscosity of the oil used in the tests. The effects on pump efficiency of the other variables studied were found to be relatively small over the range of conditions utilized. INTRODUCTION The production of oil by pumping is often hampered by low volumetric efficiency. A direct increase in lifting costs results from low volumetric efficiency. An indirect increase in lifting costs, probably greater than the direct increase, results from additional wear and tear on pumping equipment and from the down-time necessary for the repairs which can be traced to low-efficiency operation. Both increases in lifting costs tend to reduce economically recoverable oil. A number of different factors can contribute to low pump efficiency. A known basic cause of low efficiency is the presence of free gas in the pumped fluid. Pump volumetric efficiency is calculated only on the basis of liquid pumped and because any free gas pumped is discounted, this volume of free gas would represent a loss of pump efficiency. However, gas also causes a reduction in pump efficiency because it is a highly compressible fluid. It is known that pumps some- times "gas lock" because of excessive gas-to-liquid ratios in the pump barrel. Little is known of the role of gas compressibility in the intermediate case where the pump is operating at low efficiency. The opinion exists, however, that oil-well pumps tend to operate at higher efficiency with long stroke lengths at low speeds, but no quantitative studies of these pumping variables have been reported. It was believed that a much better understanding of the variables which control pump volumetric efficiency could be obtained and that possibly some suggestions as to the methods for increasing efficiency might be found from a study of the operation of pumps handling gas under closely controlled conditions. Previous investigators have studied the effects on pump efficiency of such factors as oil viscosity, oil temperature, slippage of oil. past pump plungers, pump submergence, valve size and spacing, pressure above pump plunger and fluid vapor pressure. However, none of these published investigations were conducted with pumps being subjected to large amounts of gas such as might be the case in a pumping well, nor did any of the investigations study the effect of variation in stroke length or pump speed. A large-scale teat unit was therefore constructed for studying the operation of pumps handling gas and for evaluating effects of such variables as pump stroke length and pump speed. PROCEDURE AND EQUIPMENT A schematic diagram of the pump testing equipment is given in Fig. 1. A 45-ft length of 6-in. casing is mounted vertically in a 65-ft tower. Sight ports are mounted in the casing at intervals near the location of the pump intake and the liquid level in the casing. These sight ports are fitted with Lucite windows sealed by neoprene "0" rings. The Lucite windows are machined to conform to the I.D. of the casing so that no obstruction to flow is present along the casing wall. The casing is fitted with a tubing head and 2-in. tubing is hung inside the casing. Pumps are seated in a shoe attached to the 2-in. tubing. A 1-in. polish rod is attacked directly to the pump without any intervening sucker rods. The top of the polish rod is attached to the weight carrier, which contains a number of weights to be used to force the polish rod in against tubing pressure on the down-stroke. Electric arc furnace dusts, especially those containing zinc ferrite, are notoriously difficult to process to give valuable products and non-toxic residues. The ideal process would remove and recover the toxic non-ferrous metals as pure metals, of commercial value, and non-toxic residue which can be used as a raw material in the steel industry. From an examination of the thermodynamics of the oxides and chlorides of the various elements in the dust, it is apparent that the chlorides of the toxic non-ferrous elements are more stable than the oxides while the reverse applies to the ferrous elements. This offers the opportunity for a complete separation of the zinc, lead and cadmium from the iron oxide. Results are presented for the chlorination of electric arc furnace dusts under oxidising conditions and the subsequent treatment of the chlorides to recover the pure metals and chlorine which can be recycled back to the reactor.

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

The correlation of the high temperature chemical properties of slag-metal systems with some easily measured property of either slag or metal at room temperature has been the goal of both process metallurgists and melting operators for many years. There are several rapid methods for estimating various constituents in steel in addition to the conventional chemical methods which are quite fast, but these do not reveal the nature of the slag as a refining agent, which is of primary interest to the steelmaker. Furthermore, there are several methods for examining slag, the three principal ones being slag pancake, petrographic examination, and the previously mentioned chemical analysis. The main objection to the last two is the lime required to make a satisfactory estimate of the mineralogical or chemical components. The objection to the first is the inadequacy of the information obtained. A new technique has been developed by Philbrook, Jolly and Henry1 whereby the properties of slags are evaluated from an aqueous solution leached from a finely divided sample of slag. It is known that the pH or hydrogen ion concentration (of saturated solutions that have dissolved certain basic oxides, notably calcium oxide) will indicate a pronounced basicity. Philbrook, Jolly and Henry devised the pH measurement technique in order to supply open hearth operators with a fast, reasonably accurate method of estimating slag basicity. They offered the method as an empirical observation and made no claims as to its theoretical justification. The results were presented as an experi-metally observed relationship which applied over an important range of basic open hearth slags. They found that, in plotting the measured pH against the basicity, the best relationship existed between the pH and the log of the simple V ratio, CaO/SiO2. Extensive investigation also showed that there were several variables in the experimental technique that influenced the results and necessitated following a standard procedure to obtain reproducible pH readings. These variables were: 1. Particle size of the slag powder used. 2. Weight of sample used per given volume of water. 3. Time of shaking and standing allowed before the pH was measured. 4. Exclusion of free access of atmospheric carbon dioxide to the suspension. 5. Temperature of the extract at the time the pH was measured. In subsequent investigations of the pH method by Tenenbaum and Brown2 and by Smith, Monaghan and Hay3 the general conclusions of Philbrook's work were reaffirmed. It was the object of the present investigation to extend the technique to a point where it could be used to evaluate slags of all types. Experimental Results PARTICLE SIZK OF SLAG POWDER A large sample of commercial blast furnace slag of intermediate basicity (V-ratio 1.15) was selected for the study. The slag had been put through a jaw crusher until all of it passed through a 20 mesh screen. Five fractions of this crushed material were separated, -20 to +40, -40 to +60, -60 to +100, -100 to +200, and -200 mesh. A representative sample of 0.5 g was removed from each fraction and the pH determined using the method of Philbrook. Check pH analyses on the sample fractions varied due to the different amounts of shaking. To eliminate this variable, a mechanical shaker was employed. In order to know the exact time of contact between the slag and water, it was found necessary to filter the extract at the end of the shaking period. Using the mechanical shaker and a filtering apparatus, similar runs were made on the five fractions for contact times of 5, 10, 20, and 40 min. Random checks gave reproducible results within 0.02 pH. The data are plotted in Fig 1. It can be seen from the plot that each slag fraction is hydrolyzed to an extent that is roughly proportional to the surface area exposed to the water. The (—100 to +200) mesh material changed very little in pH after 10 min. shaking time. The curves are symmetrical and lie in proper relation to one another. The —200 mesh curve appears to be somewhat flatter than the others, but this can be attributed to the portion of very fine material that is not present in the other fractions. The closeness of the (-100 to +200) mesh curve to the —200 mesh curve and the fact that a —100 mesh sample would contain amounts of slag down to 1 or 2 microns in diam were considered sufficient reasons for selecting a —100 mesh sample as representative of the whole sample of slag for the purposes of this investigation.

"A composite composed of carbon fiber and a Cu-Si alloy is a promising candidate for next generation brake disc materials used in high-speed trains. The composite can be prepared by vacuum infiltration of the Cu-Si alloy into the fibrous carbon matrix. The activity of Si in the alloy plays an important role in controlling the formation of SiC; this formation is attributed to the reaction between the Si in the alloy and the carbon fiber during the infiltration process. Because Fe has strong affinity with Si, the addition of Fe is expected to decrease the activity of Si in the alloy. In the present work, the variation in the activity of Si in the alloy with the addition of Fe has been investigated by equilibrating a Cu-Fe-Si alloy with solid SiO2 and graphite under controlled CO partial pressure. The first-order and second-order interaction parameter of Fe on Si in molten Cu was determined to be -16 and 160, respectively. The negative value of the first-order interaction parameter clarified the addition of Fe to the Cu-Si alloy is effective in decreasing the activity of Si in the alloy.IntroductionIron-based materials have been commonly used for brake discs in high-speed trains. It becomes critical for brake disc materials to withstand high thermal loads with an increase in the maximum speed of high-speed trains. The fabrication of high heat-resistant, light-weight brake disc materials is then crucial for their use in next-generation high-speed trains. Carbon fiber is known to be a light-weight, high-strength material, and is considered to be a promising matrix material for use in brake discs. The Cu-Si alloy exhibits high thermal conductivity. The composite in which the Cu-Si alloy is added to the carbon fiber matrix is expected to be a high performance material for brake discs. The composite can be prepared by the infiltration of the Cu-Si alloy into the carbon fiber matrix at a temperature higher than 1700 K."

Tunnel boring machines continue to develop to take on not only larger and larger diameters but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar has required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunnelling machines that can not only safely excavate the tunnel but do so in an efficient, cost effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This paper will review the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied.

"Modal data from Red Dog Main Pit ores were collected and analysed on a size-by-size basis. The Main Pit data were compared to data from composite samples of Red Dog Aqqaluk ores. The data revealed that a large fraction of the sphalerite in the Aqqaluk baritic ore was tied up in sphalerite/galena binaries. This provided an explanation for its poor leadlzinc selectivity compared to Main Pit ores. The Aqqaluk vein ore exhibited levels of sphalerite/galena binaries comparable to that of Main Pit ores resulting in comparable lead/zinc selectivity.An attempt was made to correlate the modal and metallurgical data for Main Pit stockpiles. It was found that there was moderate correlation between the percentage of sphalerite locked in binaries with galena in the <C5>C6 size fi-action and sphalerite deportment to the leadconcentrate.INTRODUCTIONTeck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in northern Alaska is one of the richest zinc districts in the world. Red Dog Mine has been in operation for over ten years and produces nearly 1 million tonnes of zinc concentrate per mum. Red Dog Mine is an open pit operation and current mining is conducted in the area known as the Main Pit. The Main Pit contains proven reserves of about 41 900 000 tonnes of ore grading 19.2% Zn and 5.2% Pb (Cominco 2000). To the north of the Main Pit is the Aqqaluk deposit. It contains probable reserves of 56 100 000 tonnes of ore grading 16.6% Zn and 4.1 % Pb. After the Main Pit has been exhausted, the Aqqaluk deposit will be exploited.The Aqqaluk deposit consists of three main geologic ore types: baritic, siliceous and vein. The siliceous ore type is dominant, representing 64% of the mineralisation. Composite samples of these ore types were created from drill core and batch flotation tests were performed on them. The flotation tests indicated that there were significant metallurgical differences between Main Pit ore and the Aqqaluk siliceous and baritic ore. The siliceous and baritic ores were found to suffer from poor lead/zinc selectivity (Lin 1999, G&T 1999). It was suspected that there were problems with the original Aqqaluk composite samples, thus a new set of composite samples were created and batch flotation tests were conducted again. In this set of tests, the new baritic ore still suffered from leadlzinc selectivity problems, but the new siliceous ore provided excellent metallurgical results. A summary of the flotation results is given in Table 1. Stockpile 132, which is typical of Main Pit ore, is given for comparison purposes. The mineral suite at Red Dog is relatively simple. The ore consists of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a silicate matrix. The low zinc recoveries of the baritic ore were largely due to sphalerite losses to the lead concentrate."

In predicting the integrity of under-mined structures, surface horizontal displacements and curvatures are frequently of greater importance than the more homogeneous vertical displacements. Accurate evaluation of mining induced subsidence and horizontal displacement further requires that the predictive model adequately represents the subsurface geology, mining geometry and extraction sequencing. The following documents an extension of the Subsidence Prediction and System Identification method (SPASID) to the evaluation of horizontal strains. Comparisons are made between predictions from SPASID and two other empirical methods against measured data from a case study. The system identification method is illustrated to predict horizontal displacements and strains most consistently with the in situ data.

The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

As the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable by manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Steelville property is about 37 miles southwest of Frisco, Utah. The deposit is an example of manganese occurring as a replacement of limestone in a bedded vein or as layers in limestone associated with shale and rock decomposition products. The Susie Q deposit, about 33 miles southwest of Milford, Utah, is also a tabular replacement deposit in limestone, apparently of limited extent. Test work was done on representative samples of 2-ton lots obtained by the examining &apos;engineer from each of the properties mentioned.

Based on Thermogravimetric and Differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), porous copper powder is prepared by thermal decomposition of complicated copper oxalate. The effects of various conditions on the morphology, crystalline grain size and specific surface area of copper powder were investigated, including temperature, duration, mixing ratio of nitrogen and hydrogen. Furthermore, composition and morphologies of the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and BET adsorption isotherm. It is found that porous copper powder was produced under optimum conditions. The specific surface area is over 6.74 m2?g-1, and average pore size in particles is about 30.3 nm. After comparison of SEM images, the final product Cu well inherits the morphology of the precursor, thus a mechanism of in-situ decomposition is proposed.

As originally built, the plant of the American Zinc and Chemical Co. at Langeloth, Pennsylvania, was based upon the Joplin and Wisconsin fields as primary sources of zinc ores, the ores being the then normal jig and table concentrates. Construction incorporated standard Matthies-sen and Hegeler kilns without regenerators. With the development of differential flotation, zinc concentrates produced by that process became the basis of operation. These concentrates were very fine, upwards of 90 per cent passing a 300-mesh screen, and had a comparatively low fusing point with marked caking and crusting characteristics. Difficulties and losses quickly developed. In roasting, the ore went through a decidedly fluid state, and spills became serious. Caking and crusting on hearths was severe and dust losses throughout became intolerable. Acid recoveries dropped from the normal ton-for-ton level to 0.85 tons per ton of ore, and choking of Glover towers and acid lines became a problem. In 1926 and 1927 a two-unit sintering plant was built and placed in operation in accordance with the Baelen process for finishing desulphuri-zation with admixture of carbon. This had its beneficial effect in smelting, but the other problems remained. The problem presented was the roasting of Pecos flotation concentrates at the rate of 200 tons daily to a sulphur content suitable for finishing in the sintering plant. Specifications had to be governed by the existing acid plant of four chamber sets built in units of two, rather widely separated, and the sintering plant built in the space between the existing pairs of kilns, of which there was one on the center line of each of the four chamber sets. The problem contained elements of pioneering and experimentation. A thermal analysis and heat balance clearly demonstrated a possibility of accomplishing autogenous roasting, well worth the attempt, because of high fuel costs and resultant economies in operation of the acid plant due to decreased gas volumes and a consequent release of capacity for increasing acid production, a problem also faced.

A análise da estampabilidade de chapas metálicas consiste em ensaios e testes tecnológicos para obtenção de características específicas para os processos aos quais o material será submetido. Dentre as principais análises, pode-se destacar o ensaio de tração, a curva de escoamento e o índice de anisotropia, que fornecem dados a respeito do comportamento mecânico dos materiais, como a resistência, a ductilidade, o encruamento, entre outros. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de avaliar a estampabilidade dos aços carbono AISI 1008 e AISI 1010 através dos ensaios de tração, ensaios para determinação da curva de escoamento e ensaios para determinação do índice de anisotropia. Para tanto, foram extraídos corpos de prova de chapas dos dois aços de baixo carbono, seguindo as normas ASTM E8/E8M e ASTM E517, para realização e análise dos resultados dos ensaios. Com base nos resultados obtidos, pode-se aferir que o aço 1008 possui maior ductilidade e melhores características anisotrópicas do que o aço 1010, que por sua vez apresenta maior resistência mecânica. Portanto, é possível concluir que o aço AISI 1008 apresenta melhor estampabilidade a partir de todas as propriedades adquiridas nos ensaios mecânicos.
