THE slag performs two useful functions. in open-hearth steel-making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) SO2, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (SiO2 and P2O5). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined, and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development. The titanium-aluminum system has been investigated in the composition region 0 to 34 pct Al in the temperature range 800" to 1450°C. The phases encountered in this region were: a,ß, TiAl3, The reactions observed are as follows: 13 ; L - 6T. A1, 0 (15 pct Al) + 6 (18 pct Al) - yTi Al (16.5 pct Al) at -1170°C andP (7 pctpct Al) + y (9.2 pet Al) - ah(9 pct Al) at - 1060°C. A eutectoid reaction: y — a +d belm 700°C is postulated. THE Ti-A1 system has been the sub.ect of a number of investigations. Several of these1-3 have indicated extensive solubility of A1 in both a and ß titanium. Ence and Margolin, as a result of work on the Ti-A1-0 system:'5 have shown that the a solubility ofalumi-num is considerably restricted, and found that a compound, Ti2A1 existed in the region formerly designated as Q a This structure was identified as hexagonal with c/a = 0.803. Pietrokowsky confirmed the existence of this phase7 and pointed out that the structure was isomorphous with Ti3Sn.8 Although the existence of Ti,A1 has been confirmed by others,9-12 there has been considerable disagreement regarding the composition and mode of formation. A detailed reinvestigation of the Ti-A1 system has been published by Sagel et al.13 The tentative diagram indicated two phases, a, and e, occurring in the former all a region. The a, phase has the same structure as Ti2A1 and was indicated as having a broad region of solubility. Epsilon, a tetragonal phase, was shown to form within the a, solubility region. AS a result of unpublished work,14 Ence and Mugy3 olin disagreed with the interpretation of Sage1 et al., although some common features existed. The present study was conducted in an attempt to clarify prevailing uncertainties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy Preparation—Alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (99.9 pct Ti with less than 0.01 pct Zr) or Bureau of Mines electrolytic titanium (BHN-73) and high purity aluminum (99.99 pct). Alloys were arc-melted in argon or helium atmosphere as 15-g buttons in the composition range up to 34 pct Al. Depending on need, alloys were made in increments varying from 0.25 to 2 pct Al. Up to five 15-g buttons of some compositions were made. Weight losses during melting did not exceed about 1 pct of the charge and chemical analysis revealed that both titanium and aluminum were evaporated. In general, nominal and analyzed compositions agreed within 0.5 pct and therefore nominal compositions were used in plotting the data. Unavoidably, some overlap of composition occurred, particularly where small increments of A1 were used. The small increments were primarily used to obtain alloys which would fall into the narrow a -, r region and this purpose was achieved. In general, the data obtained from Bureau of Mines base titanium and iodide titanium alloys were in agreement. Forging—Both as-cast and forged samples were employed. Samples were heated for hand forging by an oxygen-hydrogen torch to the region 1200" to 1300°C. A titanium anvil and cover plate were used to prevent any iron pick-up and consequent formation of a low melting point compound. Frequent reheating kept the temperature in the desired range. Under these conditions, alloys containing up to 15.5 pct could be successfully forged. To check on the depth of contamination, forged alloys were heated slightlybelow the ß transformation temperature. Metal was removed to a depth below the contaminated surface so revealed, and the subsequent results obtained from these samples agreed closely with those secured from as-cast material. A redução Burn Loss aumenta o rendimento coque/ carvão, com consequente redução do consumo específico de carvão e aumento na produção de coque e vapor. A implantação desse projeto permitiu a redução de 2,5 dólares por tonelada de aço produzida no Fiscal Year 16/17.

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

The resistivity, Hall coefficient, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity were measured as a function of temperature for cation-rich alloy single crystals covering the composition range across the PbTe-SnTe system. Alloying of PbTe with up to 20 pct SnTe was found to have little effect on the energy gap. Above 20 pct SnTe the alloys were "p" type but below this range the sign could be varied by heat treatment. The lattice thermal resistivity of the compounds SnTe and PbTe is raised by alloying one with the other. Z values in the order the interesting values obtained. THE PbTe-SnTe system has several interesting features. For one, PbTe is a useful thermoelectric material and the possibility of improving its figure of merit by alloying with SnTe, an isomorphous compound, has been suggested since these pseudo-binary solid solutions generally have a more favorable ratio of electrical conductivity to thermal conductivity than either of the components.' Other interesting features relate to the conductivity mechanism, band structure, and stoichiometry of the compounds and their alloys. PbTe is a semiconductor with an energy gap of about 0.29 ev2 at room temperature whose conductivity sign and magnitude can be varied from "n" to "p" by controlling the proportion of lead and tellurium with respect to the stoichiometric ratio.3 Excess lead results in "n"-type conduction. SnTe is found to exist only as a "p"-type material of relatively high conductivity. This behavior is attributed to stoichiometric deviation by Brebrick4 but Sagar and Miller proposed that the behavior of SnTe must be due in part to the presence of an overlapped band. An investigation of alloys of this system, therefore, might give additional information which would permit one to evaluate which of the two proposals is the more appropriate one. Abrikosov et al.' studied the room-temperature electrical properties of these alloys and reported data for Seebeck coefficient and resistivity on poly-crystalline alloys. The present work is a more exhaustive survey of the PbTe-SnTe system. Re- sistivity, Hall coefficient, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity were measured over a wide temperature range for single crystals at 10-pct intervals of lead/tin ratio across the pseudobinary system. The relative concentration of tellurium was controlled so as to obtain metal-ion excesses in all cases. SAMPLE PREPARATION The crystals were prepared by melting elemental lead, tin, and tellurium in weighed proportions in evacuated Vycor capsules. The lead and tellurium were high-purity grades obtained from American Smelting & Refining Co. The tin was supplied by Comico. The proper calculated proportions of lead, tin, and tellurium were weighed and charged into prepared Vycor capsules prior to evacuation. The capsules were prepared from 15-mm Vycor tubing. A sharp point was worked on one end of the tube. A pyrolytic graphite coating was deposited on the Vycor walls by heating the tip to 800°C in an atmosphere of acetone-saturated argon. An additional coating of graphite was deposited on the pyrolytic coating from an Aquadag suspension. Above the coated tip the tube was reduced in diameter to form a constrictive neck. To avoid scratching the graphite coatings the charge was placed in the tube above the constriction. After a low-temperature bake, the evacuated capsule was sealed. On subsequent heating the charge melted down into the lower portion of the capsule. The crystals were grown by lowering the capsule through a Bridgman-Stockbarger furnace. The lowering rate was 1 in. per 8 hr. The upper portion of the furnace was set for 950°C and the lower portion for 800°C. In general the yield of single crystals was about 25 pct. The mixed compositions were, as expected, the most difficult to grow. The finished crystals were sectioned into 5/8-in. slices. The tip, end, and middle slices from each crystal were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence to determine the lead-to-tin ratio. The resulting values were used to plot a composition vs distance plot for each crystal. Slices were selected from each crystal, with the aid of the composition plots, to cover the complete range of compositions at 10-pct intervals. In general, the slices selected were taken from the seed end of the crystal where the longitudinal segregation (as determined from the X-ray fluorescence analysis) was a minimum. Laue single-crystal analysis and metallographic analysis was used to verify if a slice was single or polycrystal. Any grain boundaries were clearly visible in the as-cut and polished condition. Conventional ground support in accordance with latest state-of-the-art considers proper preparation of geotechnical investigation, structural design, observation during construction and fair risk sharing documents. Depending on the ground, there are different means and methods, reflecting different experiences. The paper is presenting ground support concepts, as mostly used in Europe during the past three decades. It discusses the use of anchors as well as the use of steel arches respectively combinations. It also discusses different applications of plain shotcrete, respectively fibre reinforced shotcrete. As excavation sequence is a major input to create the ground arch, the paper discusses also criteria to create closed ring conditions. Finally deformation criteria will be presented with case histories in order to control stability of the structure.

The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

Measurement of the deformation of a borehole in rock subjected to a change in applied stress can be used to calculate the magnitude and direction of the applied stress, provided a satisfactory deformation-applied stress relationship exists , In this investigation by the Bureau of Mines the deformation of a bore- hole in a rock model subjected to a known applied stress was compared with the theoretical deformation of a hole in an elastic, isotropic plate and was found to be in good agreement. Hence, this relationship can be used to calculate the applied stress on a borehole from borehole deformation measurements.

Mercapto organic compound SDMP was used as a depressant for separation of copper activated marmatite from pyrrhotite in the presence of butyl xanthate. Flotation results show that SDMP has strong depressing effect on pyrrhotite recovery in the absence and presence of copper ion, but has promotional effect on marmatite recovery when added together with copper ion. The flotation test of mineral mixtures shows that copper-activated marmatite could be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite using SDMP as depressant. Infrared adsorption spectra demonstrate that SDMP has a strong adsorption on pyrrhotite surface through its functional groups such as ?SH, -S03.

The tensile properties, creep resistance. and thermal stability of highly alloyed Ti-Al-Zr alloys were examined. On the basis of these studies, the Ti-7Al-1ZZr composition was selected for more complete evaluation. The alloy was found to be weldable and free from excessive directionality. In addition, it developed maximum properties without requiring heat treatment other than an annealing operation in the alpha field. The alloy was recommended for scale up and is presently being investigated on a production-level basis. One of the more attractive properties of titanium alloys is their ability to withstand stress at moderately high temperatures, and a considerable amount of effort has been devoted to increasing the maximum service temperature of titanium alloys. This work has suggested that the optimum alloys for high-temperature service will be single-phase a (close-packed hexagonal) alloys containing significant amounts of aluminum. However, the maximum amount of aluminum which can be alloyed with titanium is between 6 and 8 pct,l since at high-aluminum contents an embrittlement reaction occurs in the anticipated service temperature range, 800" to 1100°F. It has been shown that the embrittlement reaction involves decomposition of the high-aluminum a phase to one or more new phases.' Since this reaction does not occur at intermediate or low-aluminum contents, it was felt that intermediate Ti-A1 alloys might be strengthened by a-soluble ternary additions without inducing the embrittlement reaction. The first alloying addition considered was tin, which shows extensive solubility in a titanium and has moderate strengthening tendencies. Unfortunately, it was soon apparent that tin also promoted the embrittlement reaction, and that to obtain a stable alloy, the aluminum content had to be reduced as the tin content was increased. The second alloying addition considered was zirconium, which is similar to tin in its effects on titanium. This element did not contribute to the embrittlement reaction and, in fact, appeared to increase the maximum amount of aluminum which could be alloyed with titanium without inducing instability. This paper describes an investigation of the Ti-A1-Zr a alloy region. Alloys containing from 4 to 12 pct A1 and from 6 to 15 pct Zr were examined. The properties of these alloys are described and the bases for selecting an optimum composition is outlined. This composition, Ti-7A1-12Zr, is presently being scaled up in tonnage quantities, and is being evaluated extensively throughout the industry. In addition to presenting the basis for its selection, this paper presents a description of the properties developed in laboratory material as determined during the alloy investigation. These properties suggest that this alloy can fill an important position in applications requiring light weight, fabrica-bility, weldability, and strength to 1000oF or higher. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Titanium alloy ingots were prepared by inert electrode arc melting under an argon atmosphere. Alloying elements used were 110 Bhn titanium sponge, high-purity aluminum, and reactor-grade zirconium. Pancake-shaped ingots were prepared weighing approximately 300 g. The composition of the ingots was checked by weight measurements before and after melting. The pancake ingots were forged at 2000°F to approximately half their original thickness to give a flat plate roughly 1/2 in. thick. This plate was then rolled at 1800' to 1600°F to 0.250 in. thick. All of the alloys examined fabricated well. However, alloys containing 15 pct Zr tended to overheat due to exothermic oxidation, and scaling was excessive. As might be anticipated from its effect in decreasing the ß transus, increased zirconium appeared to improve fabricability somewhat, especially during rolling at lower temperatures. Except for a limited study of heat-treatment response, all alloys were examined in the a-annealed condition. Prior to heat treatment the a and ß tran-sus temperatures were determined by metallo-graphic examination of samples quenched after annealing at 50-deg intervals in the transformation region. These data are shown in Fig. 1. Recrystal-lization appeared to occur in about 1 hr in the range 1300º to 1500ºF. Therefore, alloys were annealed for 1 hr at 1550ºF (4 and 5 pct Al), 1600ºF (6 through 7-1/2 pct Al), or 1650°F (8 or more pct Al). This produced an equiaxed a grain structure. Hofman and Hayward in their experiments, proving that a low percentage of copper sulphate with a variable percentage of salt, depending on the ore, gives the best results, confirm practical mill-work which I did in 1895. I have none of my notes, taken at the time, to refer to, so have to rely solely on memory, which precludes the conciseness that is alway desirable. In 1894 I took charge of the plant of the San Rafael Company, near Chinipas, Chihuahua, Mex., which at that time was treating a very refractory ore carrying about $15 in gold and from 20 to 25 oz. of silver per ton, the bullion being about 300 fine in gold. The silver in the ore was in the form of a sulphide. Although carrying an average of 0.75 oz. of gold per ton, free gold could rarely be seen by panning, but upon roasting a sample of the ore the gold became visible at once—a result which was discovered by chance and used to advantage later. In order to utilize the old mill to the best advantage, it was decided to use pan-amalgamation after roasting. The roasting, done in a lime-kiln, was similar to the ordinary " burning " operation. The roasted ore was trammed to the mill-bins and crushed by 10 stamps to pass a 30-mesh screen. The pulp was de-watered and fed to four 1-ton pans. My recollection is that upon starting the mill-work, the charge contained 1.5 lb. of copper sulphate and 5 per cent. of salt per ton. From the start the extraction was unsatisfactory and the loss of quicksilver was very large. Experiments were then carried out on a working scale. Structures produced upon solidification of the eu-tectic composition (33 wt pct Cu) aluminum copper alloy have been examined as a function of freezing rate dfs /d? , the rate of change of fraction solid (fs) with time (8). Slow (dfs/d? = 0.0016 sec-1), intermediate (dfs/d? = 0.02 sec-1) and rapid (dfs/d? = 0.4 to 7.30 sec-1) freezing rates were used. The lamellar Al-Cual2 eutectic is arranged in the form of rod-shaped colonies at rapid freezing rates. The colonies are aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow, whereas the lamellae within the colonies are aligned at various angles, as high as 90 deg, to the direction of heat flow. The colony spacing (C) is proportional to the square root of inverse freezihg rate. The relationship is C = 15.5(dfs/d?)-1/2 where C is in µ and 8 is in sec. The ratio of colony spacing to lamellar spacing is greater than 20.0 and increases with a decrease in the freezing rate. A duplex dendritic structure is produced at intermediate freezing rates. A fine lamellar eutectic is arranged within the dendrites (exhibiting side branches at an angle close to 60 deg from the main stem) and a coarse irregular eutectic appears in the interdendritic regions. The duplex eutectic structure is also produced at slow freezing rates. However, at slow freezing rates there is a Platelat of CuAl2, along the center of the main stem of each dendrite and the other lamellae are arranged perpendicular to the central platelet. THE eutectic between CuA12 and a! aluminum has been reported to freeze in a lamellar form by several workers.'-3 chadwick4 has measured the interlamel-lar spacing as a function of growth rate. Kraft and Albright2 have reported on irregularities in the lamellar structures, and have proposed growth models which account for the formation of faults during solidification. In certain instances the lamellar eutectic has been found to exist in colonies. The colony formation315 has been attributed to the breakdown of a planar liquid-solid interface due to rejection of impurities. The aim of the present work is to study the structures produced from the eutectic aluminum-copper alloy under relatively fast solidification rates, such as encountered in casting and welding operations. The solid-liquid interface presumably remains planar under conditions of slow unidirectional freezing which produce lamellae aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow. The local growth velocities are the same over the entire interface and are equal to the rate of growth of the all-solid region. The spacing between the eutectic lamellae is inversely proportional to the square root of the growth rate of the all-solid region. Under the freezing conditions used in the present study, the solid-liquid interface is cellular or dendritic and the local growth velocities are different in the different regions of the interface. The relationship between the growth rate of the all solid region and the local growth velocities varies with the location and the shape of the interface. The growth rate of the all-solid region is, therefore, an inadequate parameter to describe the eutectic micro-structures which depend upon the local growth velocities. For this reason the structures have been examined as a function of freezing rate, dfs/d?, where fs is the fraction solidified at time 0. The freezing rate was varied by a factor of 4000. The relationship between the freezing rate, dfs/d?, and the growth velocit of the all solid region depends upon the specimen geometry and the shape of the interface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The A1-33 pct Cu alloy used throughout this study was made in an induction furnace, using electrolytic copper and aluminum of commercial purity (99.7 pct), the primary impurities being silicon (0.12 pct), iron (0.14 pct), and zinc (0.02 pct). Three ranges of freezing rates were investigated: 1) A spectrum of rapid freezing rates (ranging from 0.40 to 7.30 sec-1) was obtained in arc deposits made on 2-in. thick cast plates of the eutectic alloy. The arc was operated at constant power and was made to travel at constant velocity on the surface of the plate that was in contact with the chill surface during solidification. The pool of liquid metal formed under the moving tungsten arc solidified rapidly by heat extraction through the unmelted plate. Conditions of unidirectional heat flow were achieved near the fusion zone interface, especially in the center of the arc deposits. The great advantage of the arc technique is that rapid cooling and freezing rates can be varied in a qualitative way. The correlation between the arc parameters and the solidification rate is given by the following relationship:6-8

An EAF dust generated in a Swedish steel mill has been leached in hydrochloric acid at The solution obtained has been subjected to purification by cementation followed by precipitation of zinc with sodium carbonate. The thermal decomposition of the precipitate was studied using thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The results show that during the calcination of the precipitate three different reactions occur. The decomposition of the solid phases Zn5(CO3) (OH)6, CaZn(CO3)2 and CaCO3 occur completely at 370°C, 560°C and 940°C respectively, yielding a final product containing 61.9% ZnO and 38.1% CaO. Methods to minimize calcium and manganese in the final product are discussed.

PREVIOUS studies of activation in flotation have directed attention to the action of the activator on the mineral to be floated rather than to the relationship of the activator to the collector The latter phase of the problem, however, seems to have definite scientific, if not also practical, interest In the investigation reported in this paper, experiments were carried out, largely with quartz as subject, barium as activator, and oleate as collector The results obtained indicate that a I I ratio of collector ion to activator ion gives optimum results, and that a 2 I ratio almost fails to achieve activation and flotation Yet, a 2 I ratio would have been expected on stoichiometric grounds, had the coating been a normal salt of the activator ion with the collector ion, since barium is a divalent cation and oleate a monovalent anion To interpret and rationalize the observations, considerations of the crystal chemistry of quartz are helpful The point of view to which these considerations lead may be of general applicability to systems involving suspensions of solids in liquids, they confirm that an adsorbed coating is inescapable APPARATUS AND SUPPLIES The experimental work consisted in barium-ion abstraction tests, hydrogen-ion and hydroxyl-ion abstraction tests, flotation tests, and determinations of the surface of the crushed quartz The flotation machine was built according to the design of D W McGlashan It consists of a drill press in which the bit has been replaced by a stainless-steel impellor surrounding a stainless-steel stator, as in the Fagergren laboratory machine The air intake is controlled by a valve, and the cell consists of a beaker The quartz was obtained from vein quartz stored in large chunks It was first crushed to 20 mesh, then sized on a 28-mesh screen The 20 to 28-mesh size alone was retained for use This size was freed of coarse iron by passage through a Ball-Norton magnetic separator, bleached with boiling hydrochloric acid to remove residual abraded iron, washed with distilled water until the washings were thoroughly free of ferrous, ferric, and excess hydrogen ion, and stored in covered Pyrex beakers under water until used The barium was used as barium chloride, Baker's analyzed C P The oleate was used as sodium oleate It was prepared from sodium hydroxide, Baker's analyzed C P , and oleic acid purified by R R de Arellano3 in the laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology The purification procedure was elaborated from the recent researches of Brown and Shinowara 2 It consisted in (I) saponification of olive oil with potassium

This paper reviews a pilot project that developed a system to electronically collect that data. The benefits and improvements in data accuracy, timeliness and reduction in collection effort, will be discussed.
