Coals occurring in nature are characterized by various properties. According to Polish norms, the classification of coals taking into consideration their calorific value contains coals from type 31 (flaming coal) until type 43 (meta-anthracite). The samples of coal of type 31 were taken for investigation. To this purpose, the approximations of ash contents and density distribution functions were done for this coal type (determination of marginal distribution functions). They were the basis for application of so-called Morgenstern distribution functions to approximate the function Z=L (?), where Z is ash contents and ? - coal density. Then, the comparison between obtained results was performed and the results were statistically evaluated. They are the basis for the further research of other types of coals.

IRON ore and bituminous coal are the two basic raw materials for the whole iron and steel industry. The ore furnishes the iron and is absolutely necessary-all iron and steel products come directly or in- directly from the iron ores. The bituminous coal furnishes the carbon needed for the smelting of the ores and for the fuel used in all the processes of iron and steel manufacture. The necessary carbon could be furnished in some other form besides bituminous coal. In fact, it is only since the Civil War that bituminous coal has been the chief source of the carbon for metallurgical fuel. For many years only charcoal made from the forests furnished the carbon for smelting iron ores. About 90 years ago, anthracite coal was first used as blast-furnace fuel and for many years continued to be the chief blast furnace and steel making source for carbon. Even in my own blast-furnace experience, I have used charcoal in Canada and anthracite in Pennsylvania for smelting ores in an iron blast furnace. Bituminous coal, now almost exclusively the source for the carbon used in smelting iron ores, also furnishes most of the heat used in the steel-making processes. It is seldom used in blast furnaces in its natural condition, hut is first coked in beehive, or in by-product coke ovens; such bituminous coal is called "coking coal." Bituminous coal that is suitable for making the producer gas used in the open-hearth steel process is called gas coal. Any bituminous coals suitable for making blast-furnace coke or foundry coke, or that can be satisfactorily used for making producer gas, are classed as metallurgical coals and as such are to be considered in my proposed plan for the evaluation of metallurgical coals. According to Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 449 these coals comprised 22 per cent of the bituminous coals mined in this country in 1923.

Before examining a fire-clay in the labori~tory for its resistance to heat or to fluxes, the sample is always ground to an impalpable powder. But when the clay is actually used for the manufacture of bricka, blocks, pots, etc., it is not ground to a uniform size, the particles varying from coarse grains to the finest slimes. The natural inference is that the tests with finely-ground substances mill give lower results than if the materials are tested just as they are going to be used. The, following experiments were made to find out how far this inference is justified. The method employed for fusion was Seger's direct method,* and, for fluxing, the modified Bischof method, described in the paper on that subject presented at the present meeting, The first question to be decided was, how large the test-cones ought to be made, to include representative proportions of the diflerentrsized particles colnposing the mixture. The effects of additives with Na2S, Na2SO4 and CaSO4 on phase transformation of nickel laterite ore in low-temperature reduction roasting process using carbon monoxide were investigated. The results showed that diffraction peaks of forsterite increased with increasing reduction temperature for 30min with the addition of 10wt% Na2SO4 and 50vol% CO, and diffraction peaks of forsterite increased with increasing the content of Na2SO4 at 900°C for 30min. Comparing the above three additives, phase transformation of nickel laterite ore were strongly influenced with the addition of 10 wt% Na2SO4 and 10 wt% Na2S. Calcium sulphide from the thermal decomposition of CaSO4 was carried out in the reaction product. SEM-EDS analysis result deduced that increasing the dosage of Na2SO4 from 10wt% to 15wt% could promote the polymerization of ferronickel and improve the grade of nickel in ferronickel.

"Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines are conducting research on cable-type ground supports to assess their material and support properties and to provide design criteria for implementing cable supports as a workable roof control system under various underground mining conditions. Much of this work involves laboratory assessment of the material and support properties of cable supports using both conventional and birdcage steel cables. Included in this assessment are single and double cables, effects of changes in embedment length on support strengths, water-cement ratios, use of breather tubes, and pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts.IntroductionSince cable supports were introduced in the early 1970s, considerable research has been conducted in laboratories and at mine sites to understand their behaviour. The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a laboratory evaluation project in 1985 at the Spokane Research Center (SRC) to study the behaviour of cables supports under uniaxial loads so that the effects of various cable support components, such as grout and breather tubes, could be identified. Other objectives were to compare the behaviour of various types of cables and grouts and to collect meaningful data for numerical analyses. Pull tests were conducted to determine how cables supports reacted under uniaxial loads and how they failed when ultimate loads were exceeded. Such data are essential for the development of numerical models for analyzing rock mass behaviour when the rock is supported with cables.Test ProgramBecause each cable support can be composed of either single or double cables as well as a breather tube, pull tests were designed to include a variety of samples containing these components. A series of samples containing a single conventional cable, a neat cement grout having a water-cement ratio of 0.45, and no chemical additives was selected as a standard (Table I). Then one component in the system, such as the presence of a breather tube, was changed, and results of tests compared to results obtained for the standard samples to determine what influence that component might have on the behaviour of the support system. If significant changes in test data occurred, they could be attributed to that one component. To control the quality of the samples, the physical condition of the cables and tubes were monitored closely, and compressive and tensile strengths as well as flow properties were determined for the grout used in each test series."

"To obtain large-sized billets with fine grains and homogeneous elements distribution, uniform direct chill (UDC) casting process, based on annular electromagnetic stirring coupling with intercooling, was employed to produce 7055 alloy billets with a size of F584 mm in this study. The results indicated that there were the coupled effects of annular electromagnetic stirring and intercooling on grain refinement and element homogenization, and also the billets produced by the UDC casting process showed excellent hot workability in comparison to the normal direct chill casting process.INTRODUCTION The high solute 7055 aluminium alloy has a wonderful combination of high specific strength and hardness, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high fracture toughness, which is very useful in aerospace application (Yan et al., 2013; Mondal & Mukhopadhyay, 2005). The production of large-sized 7055 alloy billets with high quality is the basic condition for the subsequent application of 7055 alloy to the aircraft. Inhomogeneous microstructures and performances of 7055 billets result from the high alloying element content and the inhomogeneous cooling condition in different regions of billets during the conventional direct chill casting (Paramatmuni et al., 2004; Lalpoor et al., 2011), which will bring bad influence to processing property, functional performance and utilization rate of materials. To alleviate segregation and obtain fine and uniform grains, some effective treatment methods were proposed including electromagnetic stirring (EMS) (Vives, 1989), ultrasonic vibrating (Zhang et al., 2011) and melt conditioning (Fan et al., 2013), on the melt to obtain fine and uniform grains. However, these methods could not effectively decrease the large temperature difference between central and periphery parts of the billet, because the solidification mainly depends on outside cooling including mould cooling and water spraying cooling. To change the heat extraction pattern of the billet functioned solely from the outer surface, based on annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) invented by Xu et al. (2010), Luo et al. (2017) proposed uniform direct chill (UDC) casting coupling A-EMS with intercooling in the direct chill (DC) casting process. An in-mold cooler was inserted to the melt sump, and thus the alloy melt temperature and concentration at solidification front become more uniform."

The following paper embodies a report which I made on the filter-press treatment of slimes at the Liberty Bell mine, Telluride, Colo. At the time this report was submitted, the management deemed it wiser to defer the installation of so costly a plant as the one required, in the hope that some of the many investigators in the field might soon evolve a cheaper and more perfect method of slimes-treatment, and one better suited to the conditions at Telluride. The Liberty Bell ore consists essentially of quartz and clay, with iron pyrites disseminated through the quartz in very fine particles. There is considerable iron and manganese stain in some of the ore, the latter especially in the clays, which are sometimes quite black. Occasionally particles of galena, zincblende, gray copper and a few other minerals are seen, but they are comparatively rare, and not in sufficient quantity to affect considerations of treatment. Free gold is occasionally seen in the quartz, and one or two instances of mire silver have been observed. The milling-plant consists of an 80-stamp amalgamating mill which crushes through 20-mesh screens; 20 Wilfley concentrating tables, taking out, in iron sulphides, about 2 per cent. of the total ore crushed; and a cyanide plant consisting of two tiers of 33 ft. vats, five in each tier, fed by revolving pipe-die tributers. The slimes overflow from the upper settling tanks through gates with adjustable outlets, and thence to a large canvas-plant, which efects only a small saving. This slimes product, of which about 100 tons escape per day (or 38 per cent. of the total ore crushed), contains about 3 per cent. of dry solids. Of this approximately 93 per cent. will pass a 200-mesh screen. The slimes range in value between $3.90 and $4.87 per ton, the values being about equally distributed between gold and silver. "Specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite are difficult to granulate, and with the increase of their proportions, the permeability of sintering bed is deteriorated together with the combustion velocity of fuel for the shortage of air through the sintering bed, which can lower sintering speed and specific production capacity significantly. The biomass fuel has a higher combustion velocity than coke breeze, therefore the productivity of specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite ore can be improved remarkably by replacing coke breeze partly with biomass fuel .The results showed that, when the proportion of biomass fuel replacing coke is 40%,the sintering speed and specific production capacity of 35% specularite were improved from 19.06mm/min, 1.33 t/(m2·h)to 21.45mm/min, 1.47 t/(m2·h),and that of 55% vanadium-titanomagnetite were improved from 17.23mm/min, 1.11 t/(m2·h)to 22.80mm/min, 1.44 t/(m2·h). As a conclusion, biomass fuel is effective to strengthen sintering of refractory iron ore.IntroductionThe iron and steel industry of our country has achieved significant development in the recent years. In 2010, the output of steel has reached to 0.627 billion tons. The increasing scale of iron and steel has led to rigorous domestic iron ore environment, and the reserves of hematite and magnetite that have superior sintering characteristics are on the decline with continually exploiting and utilizing [1]. Therefore, the RIO (refractory iron ores) SP (specularite) and VT (vanadium-titanomagnetite) have to be applied vastly. However, the quality of sinters can be deteriorated when utilizing RIO in high proportion due to their poor granulation and metallogenic performances [2, 3]. Generally, the ratio of SP is 3~5%,which should not exceed 10% in our country currently [4]. Though high rate of VT is adopted in PZH steel for a long time, the productivity is obviously low compared with normal sintering [5]."

"The aim of this study is to solve the problem of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate using sodium hydroxide in the presence of phosphate by an autoclaving process, which is one of main development techniques for tungsten recovery. To understand the applicability and leaching performance of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate, the main work is to investigate the effects of leaching parameters such as initial concentrations of NaOH and Na3PO4, reaction temperature, stirring speed, liquid-to-solid ratio and reaction time on WO3 dissolution rate to obtain the optimal leaching conditions. The chemical composition and phase composition of the samples were evaluated by means of XRF and XRD. The content of WO3 in the leaching residue obtained via washing, filtering and drying was analyzed by thiocyanate spectrometric method. The optimal leaching conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 6.76 mol·L-1, Na3PO4 concentration of 1.35 mol·L-1, reaction temperature of 180°C, stirring speed of 400 rpm, liquid-to-solid ratio of 2.0 and reaction time of 90 min. The results showed that tungsten leaching rate of 99.20% was reached under the optimal conditions. The technology exhibited superior leaching performance, which not only reduced the consumption of sodium hydroxide but also greatly decreased reaction time in comparison to a conventional autoclaving process. INTRODUCTION Tungsten is an important strategic metal, which is widely utilized in a variety of industries due to its high melting point, superior mechanical properties and heat-resistant performance [1-3]. The chief raw materials for the production of tungsten in nature are wolframite and scheelite [4, 5]. Among them, approximately two-thirds of the tungsten reserves contain scheelite deposits in the world [6, 7]. With the progressive exhaustion of high-quality wolframite resources, scheelite has become a predominant primary resource for the production of tungsten [8, 9]."

The study of oxidation behavior of High Chromium Steel material used for surface layer of work rolls was carried out. Specimens taken directly from the roll were subjected to thermal fatigue in the temperature range between room temperature and 500 °C up to 700 °C by using thermo-mechanical simulator Gleeble 1500D. Our observation was focused on the impact of oxidation as a principal mechanism of degradation of the roll’s surface layer - mainly on the characteristics of oxidation propagation in relation to the test temperature and microstructure constituents characteristics of the material. Oxidation is considerably accelerated by certain characteristics of eutectic and primary carbides, i.e. their size (area), composition, morphology, orientation regarding to the water-cooled surface, etc. In the presented paper selected cases where emphasized oxidation takes place are investigated, analyzed and explained. Obtained results thus represent a contribution to explanation of conditions which lead to acceleration of oxidation behavior that in turn can lead to chipping or even early spalling of material from the roll surface layer.

During December 2007, Lake Cowal Gold Mine located in New South Wales, Australia experienced a significant pit wall failure. The wall failure resulted in the deposition of a large quantity of saprolite consisting largely of clays and lake bed sediments to the bottom of the Phase 1 open pit mine. This wall failure ultimately buried two loaded blast patterns.

BURKE BAKER, Philadelphia, Pa. (written discussion*).-The small briquetting plant of the American Briquet Co., at 25th Street and Washington Ave., Philadelphia, was built primarily as a demonstration plant. Its output per hour is 4 tons of 2-oz. briquets, which have been retailed in the, vicinity during the year the plant has been in operation. They have proved very acceptable for use in ranges, heaters and grates in-home, and in steam heating plants in apartment houses and hotels. They have not been sold for power purposes, although satisfactory tests have been made in. this field. Anthracite silt is used and is shipped direct from breaker or washery, the only preparation it receives being the removal f excess moisture by means of a Ruggles-Coles rotary dryer. Care is taken, however, to purchase silt containing less than 18 per cent. ash. The method is covered by U. S. Patent No. 941454, issued to Chas. E. Hite, and is known as the "emulsion process." The binder, which is the, basis of the patent, is composed. of 0.5 per cent. cornstarch or wheat flour; 1 per cent. asphaltum or hydrolene, and 6.5 per cent. water, on the weight of coal dust. It is prepared in a tank equipped with paddle agitators and heated by steam jets. The starch and water are first made into a paste by being brought to the boiling point with live steam; the melted asphaltum is then introduced and thoroughly beaten into the paste by the agitators. This rapid stirring breaks. the hot asphaltum into minute particles which are distributed through the paste, producing a smooth chemical emulsion. This emulsion, when dried, is not soluble in water. The binder is mixed with the dry coal dust in a horizontal paddle mixer, 8 per cent. binder to the weight of coal being used. The constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at temperatures from 0 to approximately 1030' C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825" C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some additional data which will subsequently be described. Materials and Methods The alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table 1. They were prepared in 30 or 50-gram ingots by melting specially purified silicon and electrolytic or carbonyl iron in alundum crucibles under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The purity of the silicon, electrolytic and carbonyl irons has been given by the authors in previous publications2, 5. The ingots were homogenized in vacuo at approximately 1000" C. for at least 96 hr. and then slowly cooled. The homogenized specimens were ground to powder in a hardened steel mortar. This powder was passed through a 150 or 200-mesh screen and sealed in evacuated quartz, Jena or Pyrex glass tubes and heat-treated as noted in the various tables. Specimens 23A, 24B, 33 and 35 and the specimens heated for one month at 700" C. were quenched by quickly removing the tubes from a horizontal tubular furnace and dropping them into water. The other specimens were quenched by means of a drop-quenching device, which has been described previously3.

In Toyoha mine near Sapporo, the ground temperature is very high, perhaps due to inflow of hot mineral water, the origin of which may be rock masses intruded by the igneous activity in the Tertiary period. The rock masses are found about 2 km east of the mine, their temperature being estimated at from 770 to 870 K at a depth of 3 km. In this mine several veins bearing zinc and lead ores have been mined down to the depth of 300 m from the level of the main entry, of which altitude is 551 m above the sea level. Formerly no attempt was made at development of the deeper part of the mine than the 350 m level from the main entry. Let us indicate hereafter the levels in this mine in such a way that the level 300 m deep from the main entry is denoted as 300 mL. Since 1974, however, the 450 mL of Tajima vein has been developed by deepening No. 5 Shaft to, and by driving drifts in the level. Much hot mineral water has been flowing into the drifts from rock. After twenty-eight months from the beginning of development, the total length of excavation amounted to about 1300 m. The success in development so far may be attributed to cooling rock and air with chilled water and to adopting heat-resisting explosives and detonators. This cooling costed very much and for further development in this level a more effective and economical cooling is desired if possible. To obtain fundamental data for designing an economical cooling, the authors investigated, as a preliminary study, the heat balance in the main drift of 450 mL, by measuring the temperatures of air, rock, hot mineral water, the rates of flow of air and water and so on, in August 1976. They are now carrying out continual measurements of the variations in rock temperature, air temperature and humidity with time. The present paper describes the details of the preliminary study.

IN Bessemer-steel practice, air is blow, through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and carbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected. from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Bessemer and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast irons is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. A solution of lead-fluosilicate, containing an excess of fluosilicic acid, has been found to work very satisfactorily as an electrolyte for refining lead. It conducts the current well, iseasily handled and stored, non-volatile and stable under electrolysis, may be made to contain a considerable amount of dissolved lead, and is easily prepared from inexpensive materials. It possesses, however, in common with other lead electrolytes, the defect of yielding a deposit of lead lacking in solidity, which grows in crystalline branches toward the anodes, causing short circuits. But if a reducing-action (practically accomplished by the addition of gelatine or glue) be given to the solution, a perfectly solid and dense deposit is obtained, having very nearly the same structure as electrolytically-deposited copper, and a specific gravity of about 11.36—that of cast-lead. Lead-fluosilicate may be crystallized in very soluble, brilliant crystals, resembling those of lead-nitrate and containing four molecules of water of crystallization, with the formula PbSiF,,4H20. This salt dissolves at 150 C. in 28 per cent. of its weight of water, making a sirupy solution of 2.38 sp. gr. Heated to 60° C., it melts in its water of crystallization. A neutral solution of lead-fluosilicate is partially decomposed on heating, with the formation of a basic insoluble salt and free fluosilicic acid, which keeps the rest of the salt in solution. This decomposition ends when the solution contains, perhaps, 2 per cent. of free acid; and the solution may then be evaporated without further decomposition. The solutioi~s desired for refining are not liable to this decomposition, since they contain much more than 2 per cent. of free acid. The electrical conductivity depends mainly on the acidity of the solution. My first experiments were carried out without the addition of gelatine to the fluosilicate solution. The lead-deposit con-

VERY little is known of the economical value of the cod-bells of the State of Texas. The first authentic statement in regard to their occurrence is that contained in the reports of the United States Exploratians for the Pacific Railroad, near the 32d parallel of latitude, published in 1863-55. Professor William P. Biake reports, "that a number of seams of bituininorls coal, varying in thickness from two to four feet, have been opened along the Brazos River, in Young County, about one hundred and fifty miles west of Fort Worth." Dr: Shurunrd also states, " that the claracteristic fossil fornis of the Carbeiferaas Era have been found with this coal, and considers the age of the formation established. Foesils obtained from the carboniteroas limestone remove all doubt of the age of these deposits."† In the spring of 1879, I was called upon by some Eastern capitalisets to make an examination of the Brazos coal-field, in order to obtain the thickness, extent., and value of the coal which could be mined and be'made merchantable fir stearn, heating, and metallurgical purposes. The demand for coal in this section of the country is great, and a fuel which in our Eastern markets might be considered of inferior quality, would here find a ready sale. It must be remernbered that the market value of a coal does not depen'd upon its absoltite purity, but upon its actual value in heat units which it is capable of prodwing. A poor coal which can be cheaply milled near the consuper, is infinitely more remunerative to a mining company than a superior coal whose cost to the consumer is greatly increased by high mining charges and railroad freights. The value of the Texan coals does not depend upon their purity but upon their low first cost and nearness to a market. A glance at a geological map of the United States, will show that the Brazos coal-field is the extreme southwestern extension of what may be called the Missourian, Fourth or Western, bituminous coal

Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. The occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note.' This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. Method of Preparation The material in which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400" C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of traveling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection. Measurements The wire in the etched state was next mounted in a goniometer of special form which allowed the measurement of the spherical coordinates of the normals to any plane surfaces left by the etching. These coordinates were most conveniently a polar distance, 8, from one direction of the wire axis, and an azimuth or longitude, ?, from an arbitrary prime meridian. The region to be described more particularly is shown at a low magnification in Fig. 1, which gives two different views, differently illuminated to show the spatial relationship of a crystal occupying most of the part shown and of an inclusion, or rather a series of three inclusions suspected of being twins based on the principal crystal.
