WROUGHT-IRON eye-bars for bridges and roofs, designed upon what is known as the pin connection system, have been successfully manufactured in this country for some years. The most approved methods employed have been the hydraulic upsetting process, and by die-forging under a hammer. In upset eyes the fibre of the iron is necessarily much distorted ; and in bars of considerable size, this disturbance seriously impairs the strength of the connection. Mr. Collingwood, in discussing my paper on "Proportions of the Heads of Eye-bars," read before the American Society of Civil Engineers, Jan. 21st, 1874, submitted sketches of certain bars intended for the anchorage of the East River bridge, which had been exposed to the action of sulphuric acid a sufficient length of time to thoroughly cleanse the surfaces, and expose the condition of the fibre. These sketches are here reproduced for the purpose of illustrating the effect of this methpd of manufacture. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be observed that the fibres at A, and E, have been folded back upon themselves and otherwise twisted and disturbed, in a manner not calculated to inspire confidence in the integrity of the connection. To compensate for this defect, a large excess of metal is thrown into the eye; but a method of manufacture which involves such a necessity, even although it be the one giving the best results thus far, all things being considered, is far from being perfect.

EVERAL carbide-cobalt compositions were pre-^-5 pared for the purpose of determining the transverse rupture strength of various carbide-binder systems. The binder content was held at 10 and 37 volume pct Co, so as to be representative of low and high bjnder compositions. The carbides used, WC, Tic, TaC, CbC, VC and ZrC, were selected on the basis of availability, knowledge of their properties, and small solid solubilities in the binder metal at room temperature. The methods of preparation and carbon analysis of the carbides are summarized in Table I. The carbides with cobalt added were ball milled, pressed, and sintered. vacuum sintering was used throughout, except for the WC-Cs alloys, which were sintered in hydrogen. The sintering temperatures ranged from 2500" to 2750°F for the low binder alloys and from 2300" to 2550°F for the high binder alloys. Compositions and properties of the sintered com- pacts are presented in Table 11. For the transverse rupture strength, the average and range of the five best samples of each alloy are listed. Discrepancies between the actual and theoretical densities are attributed to carbon deficiencies in some samples. The theoretical densities were calculated by assuming mixtures of carbides of stoichiometric compositions and cobalt. Representative microstructures are shown in Figs. 1 to 6. PURPOSE OF STUDY The case study was initiated because of the very real need to provide the best mineral inventory block estimates possible for the relatively new Sacaton mine. Sufficient mining had been done and records kept whereby it was possible to test the various estimation methods against detailed blasthole samples taken during mining. Three estimation methods were selected for testing: (1) the polygonal method, (2) the inverse distance squared method (IDS), and (3) the geostatistical kriging method. The results of the comparative analysis was thought to have very practical application to the selection of extension functions for future estimation of grade for mineral inventory blocks. GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The porphyry copper deposit of the Sacaton open pit mine is related to small quartz monzonite intrusives of Laramide age which have been intruded into Precambrian granites. Both rock types act as host for the mineralization, which has been secondarily enriched sufficiently to constitute ore. The chalcocite enriched zone has been subjected to postenrichment oxidation processes with consequent partial destruction of the chalcocite blanket. Several mineralogical populations are represented in the total ore zone, but the blocks on the mine benches involved in the study were restricted to the top of the enriched zone. COMPUTATION OF MINERAL INVENTORY BLOCK ESTIMATES In order to make valid comparisons among the three estimation techniques, all of the inventories were prepared from diamond drill assay data used in the original engineering feasibility study. Exploring for deep shallow dipping orebodies can be very expensive and very difficult. Surface exploration is often not an option and obtaining the best location for underground drilling can cause production delays if drilling is carried out from development headings. The Otter/Juan mine has been in production for approximately 34 years. All of the production is now sourced from more than 1000 metres below the surface from an area known as the Edwards Lode. The orebody is shallow dipping and open at depth. Exploration drilling has been performed from decline stockpiles and from hangingwall drill drives. Drilling from footwall positions (eg decline stockpiles) into shallow dipping orebodies can often produce intersections which are unusually thick thus leading to optimistic resource figures. The decision to develop a dedicated hangingwall drilling position can vastly improve the quality of the data used to generate an orebody model. In 1997 a new extension to the Edwards Lode was discovered and named the æFÆ surface. In 1999 a resource calculation was performed using data obtained from drilling that was carried out from decline stockpiles. In 2002 a dedicated drill drive was developed into the hangingwall of the æFÆ surface to obtain better data to verify the previous resource calculation. For this case study obtaining more representative data reduced the resource estimate by 66 per cent. This information was obtained early enough to allow for alteration to the mine plan and without loss of capital.

"As ore sorting becomes more common, it is important to quantify its impact on comminution circuits in order to precisely predict its effect on throughput, grind, and mill operating conditions. Since sulphides and other valuable minerals are often softer then the surrounding waste rock, the ore kept by a sorting system is typically softer than the average ore. In order to accurately forecast production, new measurements of hardness need to be performed on the new concentrated mill feed. This paper proposes a methodology to examine this effect quantitatively at an early stage of project development using the SAGDesign test.INTRODUCTION The application of ore sorting in the mining industry is one of the most promising recent technologies with the potential to cause step change in the way concentrators are designed. Most typically, ore sorters are used to sort a given ore flow for grade, either to reject waste from the mill feed, or rescue ore from the waste pile. Ore sorting technologies have been successfully applied at many mining properties in various forms and while the technology has reached or is reaching maturity in other industries, it is still in development in the mining sector. As a result, there is not yet a general consensus on the considerations that need to be made when designing a plant with ore sorting from a feasibility level above and beyond what is commonly performed as best practice. This paper will discuss those considerations and propose a methodology for integrating ore sorting into a comminution circuit at the design phase. Due to the linearly additive nature of the SAGDesign Test results, a “hardness balance” can be developed to estimate the ore hardness which would be measured in any sorting mass split using only two data points. This will allow a design engineer to make more informed decisions as to the most appropriate mass split to select in relation to the incurred operating costs and grinding circuit sizing."

During the past few years, synthetic efforts have been addressed to the synthesis of polymeric materials with optical or semiconducting properties or even with capabilities to act as sensors for volatile organic compounds (1). The most recent studies have been concerned with the synthesis of heterometallic systems with short metal-metal interactions and the determination of their optical properties. These complexes are undoubtly interesting from a theoretical viewpoint and include an emerging class of luminescent materials, in which the observed luminescence results mainly from the interactions among the different metal centers, as well as the environments of these atoms. The understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of these products could permit the design of complexes with appropriate metals and ligands chosen for individual applications. Following a synthetic strategy consisting on reactions between acid heterometal complexes and basic gold precursors we have succeded in synthesizing supramolecular assemblies formed via acid-base stacking, which display tunable luminescence or selective and reversible sensitivity to Vapour Organic Compounds (VOC?s) (2-5). In this sense, in accord with previous Mössbauer studies carried out in the gold precursor complex [AuR2]- (R = C6F5), the basic properties of this and related materials have been employed as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies in their reactions with complexes in wich the metallic centers act as lewis acids as, for instance, Tl(I) or Ag(I) (6). For instance, in the case of silver, by reacting equimolecular quantities of [NBu4][Au(C6F5)2] with AgClO4, in acetone, a solid of stoichiometry [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OCMe2)2]n is obtained. The polymeric nature of this material in solid state is confirmed through X-ray analyses (figure 1). It consists of polymeric chains formed by repetition of Au2Ag2 moieties linked through short gold-gold interactions. Nevertheless, in solution, the nature of this polymeric materials was still a matter of controversy and, in this case, the optical properties have been shown as useful tools in order to obtain information. Thus, while dilute acetone solutions of this complex give a emission coming from pentafluorphenyl localized ??* excited states, in accord with the presence of isolated tetranuclear Au2Ag2 units, when the measurements are done at different and higher concentrations, a band that does not obey the Lambert-Beer law appears. This deviation is consistent with molecular aggregation in solution of these units through gold-gold interactions, and a clear correlation between the emssion wavelength and the structure in the solid state and in solution is shown (figure 2). DFT calculations accord with the observed experimental behaviour and show the nature of the orbitals involved in each transition.

The Golden Bear refractory gold ore roasting operation is located at Huddy Lake, in northwestern British Columbia, about BO km northwest of Telegraph Creek (see Figure 1). The mine access road, used for supplies delivery, was developed by Golden Bear and consists of a radio controlled 155 km gravel road originating at Highway 114. Hine operations are based on a two week in, two week out rotating shift schedule with personnel transport by chartered aircraft from Vancouver, Whitehorse or the 3 Talthan conmunities. The site runway Is located adjacent to the tailings impoundment.

A technique for the measurement of slurry consistency inside a grinding mil is described. The rate of slurry drainage from a sensing probe mounted through the mil shell is measured and correlated with the percentage solids of the slurry discharging from the mil. The response time of the measurement(obtained on a pilot bal mil) is compared with the response time of the viscosity of the mill discharge. It is shown that the new measurement should allow much tighter control of the mil behaviour, with concomitant savings in the consumption of power and steel.

A system of artificial support for shallow mines is described, analysed, and evaluated. The system can be designed rationally to support a predetermined overburden load, and tests have shown that the design theory gives accurate predictions of strength. The support system, consisting as it does of two basic materials, reinforced granular material and reinforced cemented material, is flexible and can be varied to suit changing requirements of height and load. The system of preloading to the design load by jacking off the roof ensures that the walls are both stiff and prooftested.

Color measurements were made for pure minerals, mineral mixtures and flolation froths loaded with different minerals. The research objective eras to correlate color with the composition of mineral streams. An industrially available system consisting of a fiber-optic-based illuminator and detector was used to measure color. The color values of binary mineral mixtures varied according to the type and proportion of minerals in the mixture. The measured color values of mineralized froths in the laboratory and in a commercial flotation circuit were dependent on the amount and type of minerals present.

The usual tasks performed by a mine store include .removal, replenishment, ordering and deletion of items and updating of stocks. A personal computer Mine Store Inventory Database System MIDSYS for monitoring stocks in such a store is presented. The system consists of series of relational databases developed in dBASE III+ environment. The system has three main modules comprising of a store management module, a display module and an employee-store operation module. The third module is useful in tracing movement of store goods. The MIDSYS is menu .driven with help functions at all levels.

This paper provides a summary of a two-day conference held in New Orleans in March 1980, entitled "Tunnel Instrumentation: Benefits and Implementation." The conference addressed two major questions: First, what are the benefits of using instrumentation during tunnel construction? Second, what contractual relations should be established for conducting instrumentation programs during tunnel construction? Each session consisted of brief formal presentations and extensive panel discussions with participation from attendees. Attendees included owners, designers, contractors, and instrumentation specialists. This paper presents a consensus of views expressed during the conference.

This is a story of progress through research, invention and innovation-progress that made a small mine in Missouri into a large and prosperous corporation. The St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded in Borne Terre, Missouri, in 1864. At that time, the mine consisted of a narrow trench eight feet deep; the mill was a hand-operated jig; and the smelter, a charcoal oven with a sloping hearth. During the first year, production was suspended for two months because of an invasion by the Confederate army. There have been few interruptions since that time.

The mineral industry consisted primarily of natural gas production and of urea fertilizer, which was manufactured for domestic agriculture. Copper and iron deposits were being developed. Information regarding the mineral industry of Afghanistan was sparse. The Government continued to emphasize the development of mineral resources that could benefit the economy of the U.S.S.R. and repay Soviet grants. The northern half of the country, north of the Hindu Kush mountain range and adjacent to the U.S.S.R., received considerable Soviet aid to develop mineral resources.

This paper presents information on low-coal ATRS systems that are now in use. A study was conducted consisting of an in-mine evaluation of ATRS- equipped roof bolters capable of bolting in seams below 42 inches. Machine manufacturers, MSHA personnel, and bolter operators were asked to assist in reviewing the operation of various low- coal ATRS systems. Features of each system are outlined and operational problems and limitations of each are analyzed. Specific applications, such as ATRS-equipped bolters designed for use with auger-type miners, are also examined.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterization of gold ores. However, this is not a simple task due to low gold grades, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. A critical test was done by two methods, using the same sections of a gold-rich ore: with an optical (OM) and with an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences e.g. the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

The oxidation kinetics of spherical pellets of zinc sulfide made from Santander concentrates were studied using a thermogravimetric technique. The experiments covered a temperature range-. of 740" to 102O°C, 0-N mixtures varying from 20 to LOO pct O2, and pellet diameters between 0.4 and 1.6 cm. Mathematical models were formulated to Predict the reaction rate on the assumption that a single transport or interface reaction step was rate -controlling. Analysis of the data indicated that the process of oxidation was predominantly controlled by transport through the zinc oxide reaction-Product layer. ROASTING processes, which are reactions between solids and gases, are very important because they are employed in the production of a number of basic metals. These processes are highly complicated, and one needs to consider the transport phenomena of heat and mass between the solids and gases in addition to the kinetics of various chemical reactions involved. Because of such complications there is a lack of knowledge concerning the rate-limiting factors, which may strongly depend on temperature, particle size, gas composition, and solid structure. The oxidation of zinc sulfide, which is of commercial importance in zinc production, falls into this class of reactions. The major goal of this work was to elucidate the roles played by different process variables, such as reaction temperature, gas composition, pellet size, and pellet porosity, on the kinetics of oxidation of single pellets of zinc sulfide. Roasting of zinc sulfide single particles has been a subject of both experimental and theoretical investigations.&apos;-&apos; The reaction is exothermic and may be considered to be irreversible. Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topochemical manner. In other words, as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. It has been found experimentally, both in the present work and in the previous investigations,1-9 that the particle retains its original dimensions and the process requires transport of gaseous oxygen across the porous product layer for continued reaction. The reaction may be represented by ZnS(s) + 3/2 O2(g) = ZnO(s) + SO2(g) [1] The solid product considered here is only zinc oxide, since the diffraction patterns of zinc sulfide pellets oxidized partially at &apos;798" and 960°C showed K. This depicts a partially oxidized sphere of zinc sulfide in a gas stream surrounded by a laminar film of gas. The spherical sample of zinc sulfide of unchanging external radius r0 is suspended in a flowing gas stream of total pressure PT and composition specified by the partial pressures of the individual components. Partial pressures of the gaseous species in the bulk gas phase, at the exterior surface of the pellet, at the ZnS/ZnO interface, and at equilibrium for Reaction [I] are identified by the superscripts b, o, i, and eq, respectively. Transfer of reactant gas (oxygen) from the bulk gas stream across the gas boundary layer to the exterior surface of the pellet and the reverse transfer of the product gas (sulfur dioxide). Step 2. Diffusion and bulk flow of oxygen from the pellet surface through the product shell (ZnO) onto the ZnS/ZnO interface and the reverse transfer of sulfur dioxide. Step 3.
