In his 1978 monograph ‘Lognormal-de Wijsian Geostatistics for Ore Evaluation’, Professor Danie Krige emphasized the scale-independence of gold and uranium determinations in the Witwatersrand goldfields. It was later established in nonlinear process theory that the original model of de Wijs used by Krige was the earliest example of a multifractal generated by a multiplicative cascade process. Its end product is an assemblage of chemical element concentration values for blocks that are both lognormally distributed and spatially correlated. Variants of de Wijsian geostatistics had already been used by Professor Georges Matheron to explain Krige’s original formula for the relationship between the block variances as well as permanence of frequency distributions for element concentration in blocks of different sizes. Further extensions of this basic approach are concerned with modelling the three-parameter lognormal distribution, the ‘sampling error’, as well as the ‘nugget effect’ and ‘range’ in variogram modelling. This paper is mainly a review of recent multifractal theory, which throws new light on the original findings by Professor Krige on self-similarity of gold and uranium patterns at different scales for blocks of ore by (a) generalizing the original model of de Wijs to account for random cuts; (b) using an accelerated dispersion model to explain the appearance of a third parameter in the lognormal distribution of Witwatersrand gold determinations; and (c) considering that Krige’s sampling error is caused by shape differences between single ore sections and reef areas.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

"An information system has been developed for the use of companies considering developing a new mine which may be liable to secondary sulphide ignitions or by existing operations. The system uses the Comdale X expert system to analyze information about a particular mine. The system will indicate whether the mine is likely to experience ignitions and what precautions can be taken to reduce or prevent their occurrence. The advantage of an information system using expert system and artificial intelligence principles is that it can recommend action when there is an incomplete knowledge of all the system parameters. By interrogation of the user it can determine the state of knowledge and react accordingly. It is considered that such systems could be of significant use in mine planning for new and existing properties, especially where operators have limited expertise regarding secondary sulphide ignitions. IntroductionSulphide ignitions occur in the underground mines of several countries, including Australia, Canada, Finland, South Africa and the United States of America (1·3) and there has been a significant increase in their number and severity over the last decade(2.4). The basic causes of such ignitions are not well understood and man incidents are not reported or documented.Sulphide ignitions can pose a serious threat to the health and safety of mine workers and to the cost and efficiency of the mining operation (1-5). Byberg(6) described the three major problems associated with sulphide ignitions as:1. the force of the initial explosion can endanger workers and equipment;2. the intense heat of the ignition's flame front can endanger workers and equipment and may also ignite combustible material resulting in mine fires; and3. the sulphur dioxide produced by the ignition may be of such quantity and concentration to endanger workers, as was tragically demonstrated at Geco. In this incident in October 1985, a worker was killed at a position 2400 metres from the ignition point of a sulphide ignition at Manitouwadge, Ontario."

THOUGH the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more com-mon types. No new investigational data are included, but the deduc-tions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines1. DEFINITION OF TYPES There are three primary types of fuel beds: (1) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in .which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed hori-zontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.

"Trusses are primarily used as passive roof supports in coal mines. They are constructed of three main parts: two grouted bolts installed at opposing forty-five degree angles into the roof so that they are anchored over the ribs and a cross member that ties the angled bolts together. There is also hardware used to assemble these components. The capacities of the angled bolts are typically 30 to 40 tons and the tensile capacity of the cross member is also 30 to 40 tons. Importantly, the direction of the immediate roof loading on the cross member is unlike the direction of the loading on the angled bolts. The load on the cross member is transverse to the longitudinal axis instead of along it, and therefore the cross member is loaded in the weakest direction.Previous tests conducted on truss systems applied loads such that the increasing tension in the two diagonal bolts increased the tension in the horizontal cross member, resulting in a stiff response. By contrast, if the load is applied directly to the cross member, which then transmits those forces to the diagonal bolts, it results in a much softer response.Based on this difference, laboratory tests to apply transverse loads and measure the vertical load capacity of three different types of cross members were conducted using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Pittsburgh. The length of the samples was about 16 feet. Single-point load tests, with the load applied in the center of the specimen were conducted to verify the performance of the test arrangement and the finite element models. Double-point load tests, with a span of eight feet, were also conducted. This arrangement replicates the performance of the cross members with a distributed load. Both of these test arrangements were conducted on one-inch-diameter threaded steel bars and 0.7-inch-diameter cable and 0.6-inch-diameter cable cross members.For the single-point load configuration, the yield of the one-inch bar was nominally 22 kips of vertical load, achieved at 17 inches of deflection. For both sizes of the cable cross members, yield was not achieved even after 18 inches of deflection. Peak vertical loads were about 20 kips for the 0.7-inch cables and 15 kips for the 0.6- inch cables. For the double-point load configurations, the one-inch bar cross members yielded at 33 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of deflection. The 0.7-inch-diameter cable cross members broke strands at 30 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of closure, and the 0.6-inch-diameter cable cross members broke strands at 25 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of closure. Finite element models of each of the six different configurations were developed and show the variation of the vertical capacity of the cross members and the difference of the behavior of the bar versus the cables."

Vast amounts of waste drilling mud containing heavy metals is produced during oil drilling process, which causes great pollution to the environment. Therefore, it needs to be treated until it is harmless. This study uses industrial waste and Portland Cement stabilized waste drilling mud; the unconfined compression strength, leaching amount of Pb2+ and Cr6+ ions, and pore size of the stabilized soil were tested at different times during freezing-thawing cycles. The antifreeze performance of the stabilized drilling mud with industrial waste is discussed. The results show that the strength of the stabilized soil decreases with an increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles. The strength loss of the stabilized soil after freeze–thaw cycles can be effectively reduced by increasing the industrial waste content, especially the content of phosphogypsum in the stabilizer component. Pb2+ ions and Cr6+ ions can be effectively stabilized by industrial waste. The results of the pores test prove that the compactness of stabilized soil solidified by industrial waste residue is greater than that of cement alone.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

This case study details the process that was used for project planning and permitting for the Greens Creek Mine, located near Juneau Alaska, as seen through the eyes of one of the primary environmental consultants. This case shows how a Company could involve the public and the agencies in the early 1980's and develop a project sensitive to concerns expressed with a high level of environmental protection. Comparisons are made to the current environmental permitting situation. Initial baseline studies performed during the exploration phase provided helpful information for more detailed environmental work in 1980-1981 as planning and permitting formally got underway. Since the mine was in a National Monument and abuts up to a designated wilderness, the Monument Manager administered the project for the lead agency, the USDA Forest Service. Planning and permitting progressed smoothly to a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) in 1983. Metal prices were depressed when the FEIS was completed and the project permitting proceeded slowly. Ownership changed several times in the mid-1980's. New owners re-evaluated the project and suggested five changes that required a supplemental EA prior to development. The project was fully permitted and started construction in 1988. Operation began in 1989. Today the environmental process in southeast Alaska is now much more complex, detailed, expensive, and time consuming than in the early 1980's. Significant issues discussed that may impede development and operation include overlapping agency jurisdictions, personal agendas of agency staff, conflicts between agencies that impede project progress, changing regulations, and a well organized environmental opposition.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. Most of us are aware of the ever increasing use of underground space. At the Advisory Conference on tunneling in Washington, D. C. in June of 1970, the demand for construction oriented tunneling during the 1970s was estimated at some 21,000 Km of length with an excavation volume of 675 million cubic meters. Of this total, 11 million cubic meters were forecast for underground parking. Though this is a small portion of the total, it is significant to note it represents a 280% increase over the previous decade. Other areas of unusual increase were railroad tunnels, 150%, and rapid transit tunnels, 160% (1). Faced with this increasing demand, the need for improved excavating efficiency is obvious. Great strides have been made. In Japan, for example, several new long tunnels have been driven parallel to old existing ones at costs as much as 50; under those of the original tunnels (1). This is an impressive achievement. I am certain, however, that we would all agree that even greater improvement is required. Great emphasis is being placed upon sophisticated systems which include among others, mechanical borers, thermal fracturing, and various methods of rock weakening and softening. However, in hard rock excavation the fact remains that the drill-blast method continues to be the most widely used system. Undoubtedly it will continue to be one of the most important techniques in the forseeable future.

Os aços revestidos com zinco e suas ligas são muito utilizados em automóveis, em razão de sua excelente resistência à corrosão. Dependendo da severidade da conformação durante o processo de estampagem, pode ocorrer dano à camada de revestimento. Para contornar esse problema, vários métodos de tratamento da superfície do revestimento para lubrificação têm sido desenvolvidos, como, por exemplo, o Tratamento L, que é um filme a base de P-Mn patenteado pela Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation e disponibilizado no Brasil pela Unigal Usiminas. Como, após a estampagem, o aço é submetido a vários processos até a obtenção do produto final, além de apresentar uma boa lubricidade é essencial que o Tratamento L não interfira nessas etapas seqüentes. Nesse trabalho, foi avaliada a sua influência nos pré-tratamentos, na pintura e resistência à corrosão de um aço galvanizado a quente, com as ligas Zn-Fe (GA), cujas amostras foram pintadas em uma montadora após os pré-tratamentos de fosfatização e a base de óxido de zircônio e, em seguida, avaliadas por meio de testes acelerados cíclicos e não acelerados de corrosão. Foi verificado que o Tratamento L não interfere nas etapas de pré-tratamentos, pintura e nem na resistência à corrosão do aço, o que o habilita como um possível tratamento a ser utilizado com o intuito de melhorar a estampabilidade do aço.

The surface properties exhibited by bituminous coal and bituminous coal lithotypes were ascertained by using streaming potential techniques. The electro kinetic prop-erties wereascertainederties of bituminous coal were found to be similar to those of anthracite. The principle electrokinetic properties of the coal and lithotypes, zero-points-of-charge (ZPC), and potential determining ions, were established. The effects of indifferent electrolytes, hydronium and hydroxyl ion sources, and polyvalent ions (cationic and anionic) were also evaluated. Location of the ZPC's with respect to pH is discussed in terms of chemical and mineralogical composition of the respective surfaces. To account for the observed electrokinetic phenomena, a generalized surface model and adsorption mechanism are proposed. Surface-dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or improve a surface-dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and floccula-tion tion. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established.' These data will be presented at a later date. Experimental Procedures The coal samples used in this research and their designations are listed in Table 1. The classical description of humic coal lithotypes as developed by Stopes" was used for the delineation of the lithotype samples. The samples were taken from the working face of a producing deep mine of the Pittsburgh seam in the area of Ellsworth, Pa. To avoid oxidation, only freshly exposed areas were sampled. The normal precautions against contamination were also exercised. Two types of samples were taken, specimens rich in a particular lithotype and a representative channel sample. The latter sample was prepared for analyses by grinding it to —35 mesh. It was screened repeatedly during the grinding to provide the largest amount of 35 x 48-mesh (standard Tyler sieves) material possible. The screened fraction was passed over a magnet and then washed several times with distilled water and finally with conductivity water. The resulting sample now termed "whole coal" was stored under conductivity water in a glass bottle. Pure lithotypes were obtained from the lithotype concentrates by hand picking, and were processed in the same manner as the representative sample. Maceral analyses, employing standard petrographic procedures," were performed on the lithotype samples to determine the purity of the samples. The results are presented in Table 2. Reflectance measurements of the vitrinites and fusinites are also reported in this table. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the samples are given in Tables 3 and 4. The electrokinetic properties of the coal samples were determined by streaming potential methods.'-' All of the chemicals used in the investigation were reagent grade (Baker analyzed). The conductivity water was prepared by doubly distilling the water in a pyrex Yoe-type still and passing the distillate through a mixed bed ion exchange column. Results In general, the electrokinetic properties of the investigated bituminous coal were found to be similar to the results of a previous study of anthracite by Camp-bell bell5 and are in accord with the suppositions of Brown." The zeta potentials of the coal and all the lithotypes were found to be negative in conductivity water. Jowett? in a study of slime coatings on coal also found bituminous coal to exhibit a negative surface. Fig. 1 shows that the negative charges, at neutral pH's, for both fusain and the gangue are very small, almost zero, while at the same pH, vitrain has the largest negative charge, almost 30 mv. Durain has a negative charge of 17.5 mv. The determination of the affect of pH on the charge of the coal surfaces revealed that hydronium and hydroxyl ions apparently behave as potential determining ions; however, they do not appear to be potential determining for the gangue. If you build a big truck, build a big tire to match it. Let that haulage synergy aid the economics, productivity and lessened maintenance for the unit. Now, Cater-pillar and Michelin have done just that. Discussions began in 1996. Caterpillar was making plans for its 797 ultra-class haul truck. The development team realized the need for a tire that could withstand extreme loads. The 797 would weigh 558 t (615 st) and be capable of 64 km/h (40 mph) speeds. So Caterpillar approached Michelin. The two companies realized the benefits of jointly developing a tire for the 797.

A common casualty of modern openpit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, these three fundamental openpit mine optimization problems are addressed by encoding them as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are nonlinear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

Drifts are an integral component of underground mining. They provide access for men and material, means for transporting ore and rock and serve as air passageways. In view of their importance on the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, empirical guidelines for controlled blasting design in drifts have been developed in this study. The application of the proposed concept was described by generating blast hole patterns for a mine with the help of a computer program. The mechanism of blast damage and the need for controlled blasting to alleviate ground control problems in underground mines have been outlined in this paper. The economic analysis between normal-and controlled blasting was performed based on the information from an operating mine. In addition, the review of drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines was also carried out in this study.

There was little change during 1988 in the production of minerals in Burundi. The Government of Burundi, which banned all commercial mining operations in the country in 1979, lifted the ban on mining of alluvial gold deposits and started a program of small-scale artisan gold mining in October. Along with the legal mining of gold, licensed gold trading counters were established. Other mineral commodities produced were kaolin clay, lime, and peat. In compliance with the Government ban, the only mineral wealth exploited for commercial sale and export was alluvial gold. Through financial assistance from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a study to inventory the country's mineral resources continued throughout the year. As part of this study, during the year, a West German company undertook a drilling program to further outline the nickel reserves of the Musongati area in central Burundi. Investigations also continued during the year regarding the centrally located deposits of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite. A Norwegian company contracted to prepare a prefeasibility study for developing the deposit. The British Sulphur Corp. Ltd. was nearing completion of its $1.2 million2 study of the phosphatic limestone deposit at Matongo-Bandaga at yearend. Ore reserves of about 17 million tons grading 11% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O3) had been identified. The phosphate zone overlies a carbonatite rock, which could provide the basis for a cement industry. Additional drilling was planned for 1984. Exploration for gold was underway in 19S3 in northern Burundi through UNDP funding. Several primary deposits of shallow semimassive sulfides with gold values ranging from traces to 11 grams per ton had been discovered.
