O movimento do fluido no interior do molde durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo possui grande impacto na qualidade do produto fabricado, pois influencia os mecanismos de formação da casca solidificada, flotação de inclusões e lubrificação da pele. A geometria complexa dos moldes de Beam Blank dificulta a garantia de fluxos térmicos simétricos, o que resulta em variação na espessura da pele; daí a importância de se estudar os parâmetros que interferem no fluxo do fluido no interior do molde. Neste trabalho verificou-se a influência da velocidade de lingotamento e do diâmetro de válvulas submersas do tipo tubulares sobre o fluxo no interior do molde. A análise do campo vetorial de velocidades revelou a existência de seis vórtices, dois na região da alma e dois em cada flange do molde. Além disso, foi encontrado que o aumento de 100L/min a 150L/min a profundidade do jato sobe de 0,74m para 0,84m, enquanto que um aumento de 67% na área de seção transversal das válvulas tubulares não promove diminuição significativa desta profundidade.

The Crinum mine has recently completed workings in the southern area of the mine. Over the 10 years of longwall production 40 million tonnes have been extracted and the mine has experienced over 40 longwall face, 3 main gateend, and 2 tail gateend roof falls as well as 5 roadway roof falls away from the longwall. Weak roof (less than 10MPa (1450psi) in the bolted horizon) has been the principal roof control issue at the mine. However, weak, highly cleated coal, water inflow from overlying aquifers, some minor structure and a diatreme in the main headings have also contributed to the challenges at the mine. This paper describes the geotechnical experience over the 10 years, the mine?s approach to addressing the issues and the relative success of these approaches.

The domestic mining industry gained more strength in 1988 as the healthy comeback that became evident in 1987 continued and grew for many commodities. The increasing and more stable commodity prices, still predominantly in the metals sector, reinforced both the new ways of conducting business and the use of technological advancements in successfully lowering operating costs during the last 4 to 6 years. Some commodities and companies still struggled to survive, but increases in productivity and profits were becoming more common.

In this work Thermo-Calc software was used to calculate the phase diagram of the Fe–Si system. The deduced phase diagram includes twenty fields, where three fields represent pure phases; two solid solutions and a liquid phase. There are several fields of two co-existing phases; mixed solid phases, and mixed solid with liquid phases. A set of eutectic and eutectoid points were found, where transformation reactions and temperatures were identified. The results were compared with results in the literature and good agreements with some differences were found. This study is a step to understand the phase diagram of Ca–Fe-Si system for refining metallugical grade silicon (MG-Si).

THE native copper of Lake Superior occurs in the form of fine grains and scales, disseminated in small percentage through the copper-bearing rock ; and in large and small masses, from a few pounds to several hundred tons in weight. Formerly the bulk of the copper came from the mines of Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, producing mass copper. At present these mines furnish less than one-tenth of the total product, and fully one-half of this is from a single mine. The masses are usually found irregularly distributed in nearly vertical fissure veins, and require much dead work in sinking, drifting, and stoping for their development. The risk and expense attending the working of these mines have made them, with few exceptions, anything but profitable. * Read at the Montreal meeting, September, 1880.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

During recent years, copper and acid production from Nkana Smelter has formed a significant proportion of ZCCM's total output, but a number of problems affecting the smelter over the last decade have only been recently overcome. This paper discusses recent developments in the smelting practice, highlighting some of the operational problems experienced and associated solutions. The smelter performance over the decade is discussed and the innovations in the smelting technology employed to sustain production in the wake of limited re-capitalization are dealt with in detail.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. Properties of an explosive which itiuence its performance on rock breakage are analyzed in relation to the rock: hardness and a discussion on the interaction of an explosive with the rock during the blasting process is given. Theoretical concepts regarding ideal and non-ideal detonation are reviewed to explain how the physical and chemical factors of an explosive influence the rate of energy release and its consequence on blasting performance. While a lower velocity of detonation indicates a slowed chemical reaction it does not necessarily mean a loss in energy from the explosive. High density ammonium nitrate (HDAN) can be used effectively in the formulation of modern industrial explosives to slow the energy release rate with its attendant decrease in detonation velocity. Examples of blasting performance using custom formulated explosives with HDAN are presented.

An assessment of potential groundwater movement beneath the tailing impoundment at the Red Dog Mine was performed, and has indicated a unique aquifer situation within sub-permafrost groundwater at the site. The aquifer was shown to be isolated from both vertical recharge and a real discharge, and is characterized as a virtually no-flow system. The permafrost resulted in a deep aquifer with high tidal efficiency, meaning that variable surface loads are easily transmitted to the fluid. The tidal efficiency has been characterized through analysis of water level fluctuations that respond to earth tides, barometric pressure loads, and loading from the pond.

Itabirito é um minério de fero encontrado no Brasil. As reservas futuras de Itabirito requerem moagem para atingir o grau de liberação necessário para concentração. Os circuitos convencionais de cominuição adotados em projetos de Itabirito consistem de três estágios de britagem seguido de moinhos de bolas. Estes circuitos demandam uma alta frequência de manutenção e uma grande área de construção. Por esta razão um estudo de bancada e piloto foi conduzido para entender a rota de cominuição de Itabirito utilizando moinhos autógenos (AG ou FAG) e semi-autógeno (SAG). Os testes piloto demonstraram que moinhos SAG e AG são apropriados para a cominuição de Itabirito.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el manejo adecuado de dichas herramientas a través del uso de una base de datos, donde existe una estructura basada en el software (VISUAL FOXPRO, PARADOX, etc) y asi ejecutarla mediante una aplicación gráfica que permita tener una representación de lo estudiado como ocurre en un muestreo geoquímico.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

Centre Jardin Lac Pelletier (CJLP) has been a leading actor in the revitalisation of closed mining sites in northern Québec for over 20 years. Over that period, CJLP developed a cost-efficient technique that transforms sterile mining residue into a substrate able to support a resilient ecosystem. Using a unique mix of organic matter, fertilisers and selected plant species, this technique rapidly builds a microorganic fauna and a layer of humus that will sustain the creation of vegetation coverage. The coverage is composed of over 13 different plant species, each having a unique role in the development of a resilient ecosystem, from soil stabilisation to nitrogen fixing. Considerably less expensive than traditional methods using civil engineering techniques, it does not require the use of heavy machinery or the spread of topsoil. This technique has been successfully used to restore over 20 sites in Québec such as Joutel, Yvan Vézina and Louvicourt. It is a proven technique that has passed the test of actual implementation. The presentation will review the biological, production and economic aspects of the technique through the revitalisation of the Joutel site.

In underground mining applications, successful blasting results in less damage, which may lower support costs, lower dilution and produce a uniform fragmentation. The explosive detonation process creates a pressure front that propagates a stress wave into the surrounding rock mass at a high velocity. The stress wave can induce varying degrees of damage, depending on rock strength and physical properties, to the excavated area. This paper presents a summary of a research project that was conducted to investigate the propagation of explosive-induced stress waves in hard rock media and the mechanism of rock damage and fracturing due to shock wave propagation. The primary objective of this work was to numerically simulate the experimental study of blast-induced rock fracturing conducted within Inco Limited, Mines Research department. ITASCA?s discontinuum code UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code), was used to simulate the results of the controlled blasting experiments. In brief, the focal point of the paper can be summarized as follows: ? Investigate the size of the stress-wave-induced fractured zone around the blasthole, ? Examine the extent and direction of the radial fractures that form outside the blasthole, and ? Explore the mechanisms that cause rock breakage.

"Wholly owned by the Coniagas Mining Company, the oldest continuously listed mining company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, St. Andrew Goldfields is located on Hwy. 101 approximately 30 miles east of downtown Timmins, Ontario. Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. Since then, changes to the circuit have increased throughput to 900 T.P.D. from two significantly different ore sources.Meeting the Ministry of the Environment's guidelines is an ongoing commitment utilizing the Inca S02 process in line between the tailings pond and secondary polishing pond.INTRODUCTIONExploration on what is now known as St Andrew Goldfields' Stock Township Mine was carried out ln the early l960 1 s by Hollinger Mines Ltd. The property was acquired by Quebec Sturgeon River Mines 1n 1973 and the main shaft was started ill 1979.When St Andrew Goldfields was incorporated 1n 1983, exploration and development commenced to identify the ore body. The company decided 1n 1987 to bring the Stock township property into production after an extensive feasibility study and testwork at Lakefield Research in Toronto. A maioria dos materiais poliméricos sintéticos apresentam superfícies quimicamente inertes, isentas de porosidade e baixa energia de superfície. Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar a modificação superficial do substrato têxtil de forma a aumentar a sua molhabilidade. Os tecidos de poliéster são hidrofóbicos e, por isso são desconfortáveis aos usuários, pois a fibra não absorve o suor do corpo, outro fator que é prejudicado pela hidrofobicidade da fibra de poliéster é o tingimento das mesmas. Portanto, tratamentos superficiais vêm sendo utilizados para minimizar esse problema e o plasma é uma técnica que se mostra bastante eficaz. O plasma ao interagir com a superfície do substrato provoca alterações químicas e físicas melhorando suas propriedades. Portanto, através do plasma é possível alterar as propriedades físico-químicas das superfícies de tecidos de poliéster, tendo como resultado o aumento da hidrofilidade dos mesmos com o incremento de grupos funcionais polares e o aumento da rugosidade em sua superfície. As amostras foram tratadas em um reator de plasma de barreira dielétrica a pressão atmosférica, em diferentes tempos de tratamento e voltagem. Após as funcionalizações as amostras foram submetidas ao teste de capilaridade, a fim de observar a melhora na hidrofilidade. Todas as amostras tratadas tiveram aumento na molhabilidade, com exceção, as amostras tratadas com 10 kV, onde não houve alteração.
