"In September 2011, Menard Oceania (MO) was engaged by Mac Mahon John Holland Joint Venture (MJHJV) to provide ground improvement solution for the $34bn Ichthys LNG development. With close to 400,000m2 of mangrove swampland set to be reclaimed and improved, this project was a great opportunity to showcase the technical, commercial and environmental benefits that Dynamic Replacement (DR) ground Improvement technique can provide. The ground improvement works involved complete design and construction for the Ichthys LNG site located at Blaydin Point on a low lying peninsula in Darwin Harbour. Dynamic replacement and stone columns technique were selected to treat intertidal mangrove mud to achieve required bearing strength, stability and limit settlement to an acceptable levels. The site is underlain by a 3m to 5m thick layer of highly organic mangrove muds with very soft shear strength ranging from 0kPa to 12kPa at depth. The site is exposed to daily sea water level tidal variations of up to 8m, which created significant constructability constraints and slope instability risks. This paper presents the design philosophy, the process involved in the selection of the construction methods, the site constraints encountered during the works and a review of the results achieved, quality control and post constructions performance.INTRODUCTIONInpex Browse, Ltd (Inpex) and its partner Total are developing the Ichthys gas field to pipe gas to onshore facilities at Blaydin Point on the south side of East Arm in Darwin Harbour. The proposed LNG plant consists of gas receiving facilities, 2 x 4.2Mtpa nominal capacity LNG trains, LPG and condensate production facilities, product storage and export facilities, a module offload facility (MOF), a flare pad (FP) and associated off plot facilities.The proposed on-shore facilities are located on extremely soft intertidal mangrove muds, therefore an appropriate ground improvement was required to achieve required strength and stability of site works and limit long term settlement to an acceptable level.Various ground improvement techniques were studied to select the most suitable for the ground conditions and site constraints encountered at the Blaydin point site. Dynamic replacement technique was selected for onshore section to improve soft mangrove mud to depths of 5.5m and Stone Columns (SC) technique was selected for MOF off-shore section to improve intertidal deposits to a depth of 2.5m.This paper presents DR design and construction works performed between December 2012 and August 2013 at Flare Pad Area."

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to. 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.

In many electronic/optoelectronic devices, interaction between the metal stack and solder is undesirable. If a reaction happens, a nonuniform joint containing spikes and voids is likely to form and as a result the heat dissipation deteriorates significantly, which in turn, leads to the degradation of the bond. In the present work the interaction between Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system, which was sputter deposited on AlN substrates, and Pb-Sn solder was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, an EDX system was used to trace the changes in chemical composition of the layers after solder tests. The microstructural examinations show that the Ti and Mo layer from the Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system are not impermeable enough and thus Ca from the surface of the substrate moves all the way up to the interface of Au/Mo and forms an intermetallic at the interface, which grows over time.

IN the copper industry, the year 1942 was one of striving for larger tonnage and increased production. The demands of the war program placed copper high in the list of strategic metals and the Government encouraged production by offering a premium of 5c. per pound for copper output in excess of the 1941 quotas. This had the effect of increasing the tempo of existing operations and also of initiating a number of projects which will eventually result in production from sources not hitherto exploited. No radically new methods of copper reduction were reported.

The compressive strength of coal in Yanlong mine area of China is less than 3 MPa. Basically, it is powdery. The roof and floor rocks are mudstone. Therefore this coal seam is a typical ?three soft? coal seam. Roof bolting cannot be used due to the very soft strata. When the conventional U-steel support was used, roadways deformation exceeded 30% of its original dimensions in some sections one half month after development. The required repair work was huge, seriously affecting the daily mine production. This paper describes how to support the soft coal roadways. The deformation characteristics of soft coal roadway were investigated. The conventional U-steel support is not subjected to uniform load, so the whole supporting structure must be strengthened. In addition, drilling holes in the coal seam can transfer high stress from near the ribs to the deeper parts of the surrounding strata, which is beneficial to the stability of the roadway. This new support method is to combine the strengthened U-steel support with pressure-relieving drill holes, providing an economic and efficient way to support the very soft coal roadways.

The partnership between Orica and MMG at the Dugald River Zinc mine in Australia has led to the first global field trials and deployment of Orica’s Subtek™ 4D™ (hereafter referred to as 4D) Bulk Systems underground bulk emulsion blasting technology. This technology offers advantages over conventional bulk explosives by extending the range of energy and length of explosive column that can be charged in underground production. 4D gives blast designers energy options between Relative Bulk Strength (RBS) 50 - 150, delivered uniformly along the entire column in most blasthole conditions along with the ability to instantaneously modify the energy within an individual blasthole. During Phases 1 – 3 of the project from October 2022 to January 2023, over 57 tonnes of the 4D Underground emulsion were loaded in 17 stopes. The primary objectives of this phase were to reduce hanging wall dilution and improve stope recovery. While drilling and other parameters remained unchanged, the energy selection was tailored for specific situations, guided by a revision to the site's drill and blast standard. The design used low energy (RBS 50 - 70) in holes adjacent to the hanging wall and high energy (RBS 130 - 150) where stope recovery had historically been challenging, such as at the toes of long downholes. Initial results of the project focused on five stopes selected for their similarity to those used for the baseline data set. Although the 4D data set was small, the post-blast scans indicated favourable results for recovery and dilution. This suggests that selecting and delivering bulk explosive with tailored energy levels can improve stope performance.

The refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Nat only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts down the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. The open-hearth furnace is a much later invention, especially as a commercial factor; for though it dates from the Fred Siemens patent of 1856, much more progress was made in the Bessemer process until the latter eighties and most of the development

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of the Sheep Creek West Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-36A), Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Wilderness Study Area consists of 11,680 acres centered approximately 20 miles south of Grasmere, 10. It contains no mines, claims, or prospects. No mineral resources were identified; however, a geode occurrence within and adjacent to the Wilderness Study Area, and minor amounts of placer gold along Sheep Creek, may be of interest to rorkhounds and recreational gold panners.

"IT WOULD TAKE a braver man than I to try to forecast the future of mining exploration far into Canada's second century. Even to look ahead ten or twenty-five years we must review the figures of the fairly recent past -and I have found this quite a time-consuming but interesting job -in order to find trends and project them into future years. The trends to which I will refer are: firstly, the annual expenditure on exploration and its relation to value of output; secondly, the discovery rate and its relation to production initiations; and thirdly, the methods by which discoveries have been, and will be, made. Exploration Expenditures Figures on the annual expenditure on mining exploration in Canada have been collected and published for some years by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics. These have some unavoidable limitations; e.g., in the varying definition between one company and another of what comprises ""Exploration"" and in the difficulty of getting complete returns. However, although the actual figure for a given year may be subject to question, I believe that the relative figures from one year to another are reasonably reliable. There is also a lapse of time between the collection of data and publication -the last published figures are for the year 1963. In bringing the figures up to date to 1966 I have canvassed eight of the larger mining and exploration companies and obtained their figures for 1963 to 1966 inclusive, and then averaged these for each year and applied the progression to the 1963 figures."

"INTRODUCTION The work of using a system of air locks in unsealing a mine in Ohio following a fire probably was one of the outstanding jobs of its kind in a medium-thick coal bed.The fire in this mine, thought to have been of electrical origin, was discovered at about 1:30 a.m. on December 11, 1941. Forty-four men were working in the affected section at the time; 5 escaped unassisted, and 37, who had barricaded themselves, were rescued. The bodies of two men, who had succumbed after breathing fumes given off by the fire, were brought part way out of the mine before it became necessary to seal the mine.Direct attempts to extinguish the fire with water were abandoned when hazardous amounts of 'carbon monoxide, methane, and other inflammable gases were detected in return air passing through the main haulageway and escape-way of the mine.The mine was completely sealed on the surface at about 8 p.m. on December 12, 1941, with the two bodies remaining in the mine. Sixteen days after the mine had been sealed, the two bodies were recovered. This was accomplished by air-locking through a partitioned-off stairs compartment of a ventilation shaft. This work was done under adverse barometric and atmospheric conditions.A method for collecting representative air samples from the immediate fire area was used successfully by utilizing a vacuum pump on about 10,000 feet of existing water line that had been broken near the fire area.The immediate fire region was sealed, and confined to a relatively small area; the remainder of the mine was recovered, and operations were resumed February 9, 1942, or 59, days from the time of sealing the mine on the surface. This recovery was made by air-locking the main entries inby from the shaft and No. 2 right-face entries.The distance between air locks averaged about 500 feet, and as each new set of seal stoppings and air locks was completed, the old or outby seals were taken out and the area between was ventilated. In ventilating this area, it was often necessary to use line curtains to direct the air into dead-end places."

"The mining Industry in the United States is becoming fully cognizant of the hazards of dust in underground mining as well as in surface plants. The dust problem in metal mines has been brought to focus through knowledge of the harmful effects of dust, especially silica, and through adoption of more or less stringent legislation classifying certain types of pneumoconiosis as occupational diseases. The coal-mining industry is aroused principally by the apparently great increase in the dust-explosion hazard resulting from the rapid growth of mechanized mining. The United States Department of the Interior, through the Safety. Division of the Bureau of Mines, has been requested repeatedly to recommend methods of allaying dust in both coal and metal mines. Methods adequate under hand-mining conditions fail to effect satisfactory reduction of dust in more rapid extraction with modern equipment. Studies of methods and equipment for allaying dust are being conducted in both metal and coal mines. Results of these studies are discussed, and indications of possible means of reducing dust concentrations are presented in the hope that the health and 'safety of men employed in the mining industry may be increasingly safeguarded.DUSTThe term ""dust"" is a common one, and yet the meaning is applied to widely different particle sizes. The general term means ""earth or other matter reduced to fine, dry, and powdery particles."" The root from which the word is derived means ""something that can be blown about by the wind."" As a result of tests on the explosibility of coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines has arbitrarily defined dust as being. ""that which will pass through a 20-mesh screen,"" based upon the fact that particles coarser than 20-mesh have little influence on the development of an explosion of Pittsburgh coal-bed dust. The study of dust, from a health standpoint, has given rise to still another definition of dust, namely,- according to Drinker3/, ""solid particles ranging in size from less than 1 micron to about 150 microns."" A micron is 1/25,400 inch, and 150 microns are approximately 1/1,700 inch. Atmospheric dust usually is considered as 10 microns or less, larger particles not being counted under the microscope in determination of dust concentrations."

"Volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Noranda Camp cur throughout the Noranda Shield Volcano but are concentrated and along the margins of the Noranda Cauldron. The deposits are realized along synvolcanic faults that also accommodated subsince and controlled the location of eruptive centres. Deposits within e 3 000 m thick Mine Sequence formed during a period of active volcanism and subsidence coinciding with the onset of two cauldron subsidence cycles. The Noranda Cauldron was a restricted site of 10malously high heat flow and structural permeability that favoured e development of a high-temperature hydrothermal system. Metals may have been derived from leaching of aquifer rocks by convecting a water or directly from a shallow underlying magma chamber, now presented by the Plavrian Pluton, that was at its highest position !thin the crust during cauldron subsidence. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

The Soutpansberg Coalfield hosts South Africa's hard coking coal reserves. However, coals in this region are understudied compared to other coalfields in the country. This study characterizes the properties of fine-float fraction samples extracted from a wide diameter borehole core in the Makhado Project, Tshipise sub-basin, Soutpansberg coalfield. Conventional analyses were used to determine the coal quality, petrographic composition, mineralogy, geochemistry (including trace element and rare earth element composition), and free swelling index of samples from six coal horizons and three partings from the economic No.6 Seam. The coal samples are classified as medium rank bituminous C coals (0.88 %RoVmr, 0.92 %Rmax) and are highly vitrinitic in composition (97 vol% mineral matter free (mmf)). The samples show strong caking potential (FSI of 9). The total rare earth concentrations range between 570 and 3193 ppm in the ash samples. Preliminary analysis show all but two samples are promising sources of rare earth elements as the total concentrations exceeded the 1000 ppm cut-off grade. Further research is required to confirm these preliminary findings.
