Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). To meet the business objectives of a metallurgical project, there is often a need for new and untried technology or equipment, whose very novelty can present serious risks to meeting those objectives. The key risk management approach is a rigorous stepwise progression from theoretical evaluations and laboratory tests to pilot plant trials. These must be followed by demonstration-scale trials before final construction of a commercial scale plant, paying particular attention to the magnitude of the scale-up between phases. Success depends on following a well-defined program, not eliminating any steps, and ensuring adequate resources are available to the development team. Chapter 6 discusses the nature of technology risks to metallurgical plant projects, and the rigorous management practices needed to identify, analyze, evaluate, and avoid or mitigate them.

Highly non-ideal explosives usually tend to react expressively below their ideal detonation velocities. In these cases, dimensional effects and product heterogeneities become important to proper model the detonation state. Although Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) techniques can provide a complete and exact solution for this problem, its actual computation cost is still not practical for industrial applications. In order to minimize these constrains, a simplified two-dimensional steady non-ideal detonation model for cylindrical stick explosives is developed.

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb Corporation's Tsumeb and Kombat mines. In this paper the Kornbat mill flowsheet and metallurgical data are given with particular reference made to the separation techniques using activated carbon. The mine's historical background, geology and mining methods are described briefly.

Orebodies with intricate three-dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer-assisted methods. The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral deposits.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of dilute polymer in brine solutions to increase the efficiency of air in gas flooding model oil reservoirs. Slugs (0.23 pore volume) of 500 ppm polyacrylamide were injected into a model, consisting of a high- and a low-permeability core, that had been previously gas flooded to residual oil. Gas flooding was then resumed. Of the total gas volume injected, the percentage entering the high-permeability zone was greatly reduced after polymer injection but remained unchanged when slugs of water without polymer were used.

Lowering of filter cake moisture of ultra-fine coal to a 20 percent level using conventional vacuum filtration could be achieved using a combination of metal ion and surfactants. Pretreating coal slurry with about 0.2 Kg/ton of a surfactant and 50 ppm of copper or 10 ppm of aluminum ions provided filter cake containing 22.8 percent moisture. The lowering of moisture is explained due to formation of hydrophobic micro-agglomerates which facilitates dewatering.

In the processing industries, it is well known that particle shape is an important factor which determines the behavior of particulate systems. For example, system properties of technological significance including rheology, suspension stability, agglomeration, packing, permeability…etc, are affected by particle shape. In this regard, characterization and analysis of particle shape is essential for more detailed understanding and improved development of particulate processes. In general, it is clear that the behavior of these systems depends on the statistical characteristics of particle shape. Remarkably few techniques exist to predict the mechanical and hydrodynamic behavior of an irregularly shaped particle or a population of irregularly shaped particles for that matter. The lack of models and correlations can be attributed to the wide variety and complexity of particle shapes, the difficulty of defining shape descriptors suitable for modeling, the limitations of measuring shape, and the lack of classifying techniques to characterize particle shape. In this paper, we present information on how 3D particle shape can be measured, characterized, and analyzed using cone-beam X-ray microtomography (XMT).

"Cominco Copper Division's Valley Mine is located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia, approximately 275 km by air northeast of Vancouver. The nearest towns are Logan Lake, located IS km to the east and Ashcroft, located about 50 km to the northwest.Preproduction stripping of rock and overburden at the Valley Mine's Lake Zone Pit began in mid-1982 following a decision to discontinue mining in the adjacent Jersey Pit. Equipment and mining methods were carried over from the Bethlehem Copper operations which, with Valley Copper Mines, were merged into Cominco in December 1982.Blasting practices, as carried over from the Bethlehem pits, were designed to provide the fine fragmentation required to meet production requirements using the Bethlehem crusher. However, after mining the first few benches of the Lake Zone Pit, it became apparent that overblasting at the pit limits was causing a number of bench failures, as well as contributing to an over-all reduction of the material strength of the rock mass forming the southwest wall of the pit.With present ultimate pit plans calling for the southwest wall to be as high as 300 m, Valley staff realized that potential slope stability problems should be dealt with as early as possible. This philosophy would enable experimentation on phase pit walls in order to attain the optimum slope angle on the ultimate pit wall.As part of an over-a ll slope stability program, a controlled blasting program was initiated at the Lake Zone Pit in March 1983. In this program, Valley engineering and production staff worked together with Golder Associates in establishing design criteria and evaluating the results. This program resulted in a marked improvement in the soundness of pit walls while maintaining the required degree of fragmentation."

"Heap leaching is well-established as a relatively low-cost and low-energy method of extracting metals from low grade ores. However, the design methodology, attention to the engineering details during heap construction and the long time scale in metal recovery makes the process susceptible to significant variation in the success of a heap leach operation. Often the laboratory predicted recovery rates are not achieved on site due to poor understanding of the complex physics of flow and coupled solid-liquid-thermal reactions within the multi-dimensional heterogeneous ore body. Given the large scale of commercial operations, small changes in metal recovery can substantially change the operating profitability. While there are a variety of approaches to heap leach modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling coupled with leach kinetic models offers a methodology to describe and understand the complexities of heap leaching. The CFD model uses leach kinetics specific for the mineralogy of the ore, including gangue chemistry, and provides an energy balance to calculate and predict temperature. Coupled with the CFD model’s inherent capability for modeling complex fluid flow, the physics and the chemistry of the heap can be simulated. This provides a tool for engineering design, as well as forecasting heap production under different scenarios. The calibrated model is used to simulate a three-dimensional test heap under fluctuating meteorological data, such as precipitation events, periodic solution application, and notably temperature. These simulations provide support for a methodology to design and engineer heap leaching of low grade copper sulfide ore. INTRODUCTION Worldwide copper ore reserves are faced with decreasing head grades with copper sulfides, particularly chalcopyrite being the predominant mineralogy (Nesse, 2000). Heap leaching offers an economical way to recover copper from low grade ore. The ore is stacked and a leach solution is applied and allowed to trickle though the porous bed of ore to extract target metals. The heap can be built with run of mine material or crushed ore and is constructed in order to achieve percolation of the leach solution to all regions. Bartlett (1998) provides an authoritative overview of the solution mining process where the leach solution interacts with the solid, the lixiviant dissolves the target minerals from the solid into the solution, and the dissolved species are transported out of the heap for subsequent recovery. Petersen (2016) provides a recent review of heap leach technology and emerging and potential future applications, and Ghorbani et al. (2016) summarizes the current state and challenges of the technology. Early applications of heap leaching offered a low cost technique to achieve high recoveries from oxide ores, typically greater than 70% depending upon the kinetics of reaction. As world copper resources transition to mainly copper sulfide mineralogy, such as chalcopyrite based ores, achieving high recovery from these copper sulfide deposits is proving more difficult due to the complexity of the leach kinetics, which leads to low leaching efficiency."

Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. Nickel smelting and converting can be viewed as processes in which iron is either partitioned or transported between matte and slag. Metal recovery depends on the mass of iron transported to slag, the thermodynamic environment in which the transport is made, and the extent to which the slag, once formed, is left in contact with the matte. The importance of these effects is discussed with reference to a new equation which describes metal recovery in terms of a mass balance and a thermodynamically related parameter which is easily measured in practice.

IN SEVERAL papers and addresses during the past two years, I have dwelled upon some of the economic consequences of the war. The fundamental thought that I have sought to convey is that the world became immensely poorer by the war, not only in material wealth and population, but also in the psychology and morale of the people. I do not see how there can be any intelligent dissent from that statement. All the ideas of post-war prosperity were manifestly fallacious, manifestly fallacious from the outset. If there had been any truth in them it would have followed logically that a great war, with all its destruction of wealth, health and life would be a good thing. Therefore, let us have a great war every ten years or so. Such an idea would be both monstrous and absurd. Assuming then the acceptance of my premise, I have tried to show that the losses by the war could be made good in a short time, i.e., in a relatively short time, only by doing things a great deal better than formerly, and that the accomplishment of such a result called for greater transparency in industry, for industrial cooperation, for thinking in terms of industries as a whole, and for the greater exercise of engineering functions. All of this introduced, of course, the position and psychology of labor. I say frankly that I do not look for labor to contribute any constructive thought to the upbuilding. I neither expect it nor hope for it. This is a pity, for it could do so much for its own economic advancement if it would. However, it never has done so, but rather has benefited only from the exercise of the talents of the few, and the main hope now is to bring it into a passive state, dispelling the resistive fallacies that developed during the war. Let us briefly examine the nature of these.

Mine ventilation is one of the most important aspects of mining operations in underground mines. It is critical to maintain and deliver required fresh air to the active areas to reduce the risk of overexposure to hazardous contaminants or explosive atmospheres. An unexpected or unknown event such as roof collapse, unexpected mine door closure/opening, a fire/explosion, or fan malfunction could adversely alter the airflow distribution within the mine ventilation network that could lead to a hazardous underground environment. Knowing the occurrence and location of such an incident is of critical importance. In this study, the authors developed a novel methodology to assist mine operators in quickly identifying the location of any abnormal airflow change within the network using the airflow changes at monitored airways. The concept is based on a direct derivative method developed by the authors. This paper provides the details of the developed method as well as numerical verification examples. The application of this method can benefit mine operators and safety personnel in making better decisions during a mine emergency response operation to mitigate hazardous conditions arising from an unexpected airflow disturbance

Currently, many commercial sinter plants are exploring the potential addition of high-grade iron ore concentrates to improve the sinter grade. A better understanding of the ore blend, granule behaviour and green bed properties is critical to making this change and maintaining productivity in the sinter plant. This study compared the performance of a laboratory scale granulation drum to a commercial scale unit. The blend used was an Asia-Pacific style sinter blend containing iron ore concentrates. The operating conditions of the two granulation drums (laboratory and commercial scale) were fixed at the same Froude Number (0.00337), space factor (15 per cent) and residence time (4.5 mins). The granules were characterised by measuring their mean size, size distribution and green bed voidage. It was found that the laboratory scale granules were representative of commercial sinter plant granules at similar moisture content. When the moisture was fixed at ~6.9 per cent, granulation time had no significant effect. A further fundamental investigation was undertaken to measure the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity of the individual ores used in this study. The kinetics of water absorption were measured which showed that water absorbs quickly into the ore particles within the first 60 seconds, slowing down until final saturation was attained after six hours. A linear relationship between the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity was noted for different ore particle sizes. The results of this study provide a baseline understanding of the current commercial sinter blend and encourage exploring the specific effect of increasing the proportion of ultrafine concentrates in sintering in a future study.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.
