"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Last September, when I was asked to prepare this paper, I was told the subject was "mining," a broad subject indeed! Rather than choose one of the many important technical and economic details which characterize mining today, I turned to a subject which fas- cinates me: mining's image. If we are to survive and prosper into the twenty-first century, and if industry and society are to continue enjoying the material benefits which flow from mining, we must address the melancholy fact that the general public at best does not understand mining, and at worst does not believe it is needed or deserves to continue. While my point of view is largely that of an American mining executive, I would hasten to point out that Homestake has participated in Australian mining for over three decades, and our subsidiary, Homestake Gold of Australia Limited, is now a major producer in this "lucky country." Does society need a viable minerals and metals industry? The answer is obviously "yes," so the challenge is to change some minds: not just those of the amorphous "public," but on a focussed basis targeting journalists, educators, TV commentators, politicians and opinion makers of all stripes (I thought of using "rifle shot" instead of focussed but thought that might be misconstrued). Along the way we miners must also look deeply into ourselves, our attitudes towards the society in which we function, and our willing- ness to change as well as to seek change in others. How did we become such bad guys? More than a century ago mining was not just accepted, it was even romanticised. In America, we had altered the time-honored concept of "Crown" lands into public lands made easily available to settlers pushing back the frontier. Miners even preceded the farmers and stockmen in what was perceived as nation-building, although by the 1890s there was a growing interest in conservation, especially the protection and management of forests and national parks. Even though emphasis was shifting toward government stewardship and away from trans- fer of public lands to private ownership, homesteading and mining were clearly recognised as valid uses requiring not just access, but security of tenure. Indeed, conservation as it was then understood implied management of the public domain as well as its protection. Initially this was no great problem to the U.S. mining industry, but as the nation grew and competing land uses became more important, conflicts began to appear, first over water rights and later over air quality and destructive mining practices. But these were local disputes rather than national issues, and two World Wars, the Great Depression and post-war reconstruction lulled our industry into thinking that nothing had really changed. After the storm began to break in the 1960s, the mining industry found itself confronted by a growing maze of complex and costly laws and regulations. It took us longer than it should have to realise that, in facing this challenge, we seemed to have lost the understanding and support of many of our legislators and a majority of the general public. Flotation of halite?new, recently begun to be developed method of processing water-soluble minerals. In the paper the results of studies of the new directions of the application of halite flotation are represented. Studies on the flotation separation of halite and sylvite in the salt solutions of different composition, showed the possibility of the halite flotation realization not only in the carnallite brine (content of salts: MgCl2 25.5% ~ 26.0 %, chlorides of potassium and sodium 5.5% ~ 6.0%), but in the sylvinite brine, which contains 10.5% ~ 10.8% KCl and 20.5% ~ 21% NaCl. On the basis obtained results are carried out experiences on the halite flotation from samples of the converted products of sylvinite ores by flotation method and by the method of the electrostatic separation. It is shown that in all cases it is possible to accomplish effective and selective recovery of halite. The halite recovery into the foam product of flotation makes 80% ~ 90% with an increase in the content of KCl in the cell product of flotation in comparison with a composition of flotation feed: - from the product after the electrostatic separation of ore ? from 76% KCl to 95% ~ 97% KCl; - from the small fraction of ore (- 0.25 + 0 mm) ? from 30% KCl to 60% ~ 64% KCl; - from middlings (intermediate products) of sylvite flotation from 16% ~ 31% KCl to 45% ~ 80% KCl. An increase in the molecular weight of alkylmorpholines increases the selectivity of the flotation separation of halite and sylvite. Halite recovery from small size fraction of ore or/and middling of sylvite flotation with the sub-sequent joint filtration halite product and tails of sylvite flotation allows to reduce considerably expenses for manufacture potash chloride from Pilot-industrial tests for the first time confirmed the possibility of the effective halite flotation in the saturated solutions of chlorides of potassium and sodium (sylvinite brine).

"This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative tunnelling method named the Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which is conducted by the Ring Pipe Jacking Machine (RPJM). The RPJM consists of a double ring shell which forms a ring section where small interlaced cutter heads or several micro tunnelling machines are assembled to cut soil. Similar to the conventional pipe jacking method, the RPJM also needs a thrust system, a slurry transport system, and a control system. To satisfy the need for large/super large or special section tunnels in future, the RPJM is designed to reduce sharply the excavation face to the annular section, thus enhancing the face stability. Part of the innovation is that the RPJM uses modular cutter heads or micro-TBMs which can be reused. The typical double shield shape can be easily changed by reinstalling the modular cutter heads. Modularity allows the tunnel to be cut in any cross-section shapes, ranging from a circular tunnel to a rectangular one. INTRODUCTION The demand and requirement to utilize urban underground space is rising with the rapid social development in recent years. It is necessary to reduce excavations of the urban ground surface to ensure smooth traffic in cities. Therefore the conventional open cut construction method for underground tunnels can no longer satisfy the need of practical engineering, and it is taken over by trenchless technologies .The Pipe jacking method is an important trenchless technology and is used more and more frequently to install underground pipelines, but the present pipe jacking method still has many problems. For example, it is not suitable for installing large-diameter tunnels and it also has difficulty in construction of short radius curved tunnels. This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative pipe jacking machine named the Ring Pipe Jacking machine (RPJM) and introduces the correspondent Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which can be applied to construct large-diameter tunnels. Furthermore, technical characteristics and superiority of the ring pipe jacking method are analyzed in this paper."

DURING the past fourteen months, dust surveys have been made at thirty-six mines in the Province. These surveys are made to determine the concentration of dust in the mine atmosphere, the flow of air through the mine, the methods adopted to prevent the generation of dust, and the measures taken for its elimination. When high concentrations of dust are encountered, suggestions are given for its prevention ?and elimination wherever possible. Dust sampling is absolutely necessary to determine the effectiveness of any measure taken in the prevention and elimination of dust in the mine workings. Consequently, more time has been spent on this phase of the work than on any other. The apparatus used is the Devers circular konimeter and Zeiss microscope. At various mines, the Zeiss konimeter is used, and the dust counts taken by the two instruments have given results that are closely comparable; so much so that either instrument can be used with confidence and the results obtained will compare in accuracy with those obtained by the methods used in Ontario and South Africa. Before the Workmen's Compensation Act Amendment Act was passed in November, 1936, most of the mine operators were already keenly interested in the prevention of silicosis. This interest has been intensified at all the mines, and measures have been adopted to decrease the amount of dust in the mine atmosphere. Several operators have spent a large amount of time and money in bettering these conditions, and have met with decided success. Practically all others are adopting the known methods of prevention, suppression, and elimination of dust, that apply to their ?particular mines. To prevent the production of dust in underground workings should be the first, as it is the most important, aim, especially during the time the men are underground. An atmosphere free of dust cannot be obtained, but measures can be adopted to lower the concentration that is found? in the average mine.

"This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. This extended abstract presents the progress of tropical phytomining, and reports on agronomic trials undertaken to determine whether the trends in temperate regions could be confirmed in a wet tropical environment.CITATION:Nkrumah, P N, Erskine, P D, Echevarria, G and van der Ent, A, 2016. "In order to accurately detect whether the collision occurs between particle and bubble in flotation process, a collision detection method of particle and bubble, which based on morphological image processing and Otsu method, is presented. First of all, it utilizes image pre-processing to optimize images, the target area and the background area are segmented by Otsu method. Then, particle and bubble are fitted to a circle combined with the least-square method. It’s convenient to obtain the coordinate information and radius. Finally, the position of all particles is extracted to an image, which achieves the particle tracking and avoids the complexity of the continuous frame image tracking.Experimental analysis shows that the relationship between the two ordinate difference d and the bubble radius r has a certain influence on the collision detection when the dripping particles are close to the bubble, when d>r, the detection accuracy is 92%;When d=1/2r, the detection accuracy is 97%;When d=0, the detection accuracy is 100%. The result indicates that this algorithm can detect the collision between particle and bubble quickly, and the working hours of manual test are saved effectively ,the best position of dripping particles close to the bubble which is taken with a CCD camera should be in the range of the particle and bubble’s ordinate difference less than half of the bubble radius.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is an important technical means to separate useful minerals from ores. The flotation process of ores and materials in the world is treated by flotation technology up to billions of tons every year, so the study of flotation process is particularly important. Raising the collision probability between mineral particles and bubbles in flotation process is one of the key factors to improve flotation separation efficiency[1]. The study indicates that[2-4] the collision probability between particles and bubbles is influenced by many factors, such as particle density, particle size bubble size, etc. The analysis of these influential factors requires a lot of experiments. Therefore, it is of great significance to design an accurate collision detection method for the research of this field."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". Ever since the early '60's there have been efforts to develop and produce reliable continuous haulage systems capable of taking the full output of a continuous miner and transporting it, in one continuous flow, from the face to the tipple. The majority of the continuous haulage systems which have been most successful to date were placed in operation in the early '70's and were all of the bridge conveyor type, usually consisting of bridges and mobile bridge carriers attached at the inby end to the continuous miner and at the outby end to the panel conveyor itself. These successful bridge conveyor type continuous haulage systems were, and continue to be, either of the belted or chain type. Undoubtedly, the most successful belt type continuous haulage systems are those manufactured and marketed by the Long-Airdox Company. Until early 1977, the most successful chain conveyor type haulage systems were manufactured and marketed by Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division. In 1977, Long-Airdox reentered the market with a chain type system to complement its belted system. I say "reentered" because the original bridge type continuous haulage system was introduced to the coal mining industry in the early '60's by the old Long Company, a predecessor of the current Long-Airdox Company, and those original units were of the chain conveyor type.

Engineering truths are not best expressed by adjectives, yet my wish, today, is not to attempt a quantitative measure of the dominant position of the mineral industry of the United States in the existing scheme of material things, but rather to seek a clualitative appraisal of what mining and metallurgical engineers are doing to promote and make secure our , national progress. Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. "The flow field in a rotary kiln, used in an iron ore pelletizing process, was investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. The model is isothermal, downscaled and simplified. The objective was to examine the possibility of capturing the unsteady motion of the flame seen in the real kiln. The results from the simulations were compared with recorded images of the real process. The results demonstrate the possibility of quickly getting an overview of the flow field in the kiln. The main, unsteady behavior of the flame was captured. The model may be used as a tool in the ongoing work of improving and optimizing the pelletizing process.IntroductionThe pelletizing process, in which the crude iron ore from a mine is upgraded into pellets, is a process involving large amounts of hot air flowing in complex geometries. Flow control is a crucial factor in this process to maintain high pellet quality. The rotary kiln is one of the last steps in the pelletizing process, and this is where the pellets are sintered to increase their strength and metallurgical properties. The kiln burner produces a flame that supplies the entire pelletizing process with the necessary heat.Kiln burner flames are large diffusion flames arising from a jet of fuel from the burner issuing into a concentric confining cylinder with a surrounding coflow of air, called secondary air. To enable combustion, the secondary air needs to be entrained into the fuel jet. This mixing of the fuel and air is the slowest step in the combustion process and therefore affects the efficiency of the combustion. The rate of entrainment depends on the momentum ratio between the burner jet and secondary air. The higher the momentum ratio, the faster the entrainment rate and, consequently, the faster is the fuel/air mixing.The kiln of interest in this study differs from kilns used in other industrial processes in both geometry and operating conditions. A distinguishing feature is the large amount of secondary air being induced through the kiln hood and then transported to earlier stages in the process as air or exhaust gas. The secondary air therefore has a substantial momentum, implying that the resulting flow field has a significant impact on the mixing and combustion process in general and the flame shape and stability as well as combustion efficiency in particular. A systematic study of the factors influencing the dynamics of the flow field in the kiln, neglecting the combustion, is therefore justified."

Develop improved blasting practices that can help to curb overbreak in highwalls at surface mines, thereby reducing the hazards of rock-falls to workers and equipment, The Problem The serious hazard in surface mining is the falling of rock from highwalls. Poor highwall stability is caused in part by geologic conditions, but often is aggravated by faulty blasting practices, where the explosive energy not only fractures the rock to be excavated, but also damages the rock that borders the excavation. This reduces the general stability of the hlghwall and increases the rockfall potential. The probability of injury to mine workers or damage to equipment associated with exposure to the highwall increases with the height of the highwall and the extent of its overbreakage. Most rockfalls occur in the first 15 days after a new highwall is exposed. This statistic is significant since most of the work below a highwall is done during this period. The area of greatest hazard is within 25 ft of the toe for rocks that fall vertically, and up to 90 ft from the toe for falling rocks that are deflected by the highwall during their descent, The workers most frequently involved in such accidents are dozer operators, ground laborers, and shovel operators or oilers.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. "Laboratory-scale tests were carried out to investigate the response of a high-grade (~143 g/tonne) well-liberated gold ore to flotation using two collector types. Octyl and amyl xanthates, representing conventional types of collectors, were tested against an n-octanoic and hexanoic acids under moderate and high redox potential conditions. The latter was based upon a suggestion in literature that monocarboxylic acids are able to adsorb onto the surface of gold at redox potentials near 600 mV (SCE). This investigation did not demonstrate that these carboxylic acids could function as collectors for gold in real ores. In fact, they appear to have slightly depressed gold. However, the results demonstrated that octyl and amyl xanthates acted as highly effective gold collectors for this ore and that an increase in the collector dosage led to an increase in recovery for all mean particle sizes. In some tests, gold recoveries of around 95% were attainable in concentrates with grades around 6 kg/tonne, indicating that xanthate flotation remains a viable means of concentrating gold even at coarse grain sizes. Various aspects of the process such as grade-recovery performance and recovery by size are discussed.INTRODUCTION Three methods are used for the recovery of gold in mineral processing, either alone or in combination: gravity concentration, cyanidation and flotation. Gold occurs as a by-product in some ores together with platinum group metals and as the primary metal in other ores in the form of native gold and electrum, which are alloys of gold, silver and minor amounts of copper. Flotation is a viable method for recovering liberated gold where the gold is visible under an optical microscope (greater than 1 µm in size) and where the attachment of gold grains is not prevented due to bubble loading by competing minerals. It is generally known that grains finer than 150 µm in size will float with most collectors."

Laboratory-based dynamic testing provides an invaluable tool in the development of rock bolts for use in highly stressed, burst prone rock masses. While in most cases the laboratory-based test method is not a direct comparison to an in-situ installation due to the purely axial loading and variations in boundary conditions, it does provide an indication of the performance of the tendon system under dynamic loading. The aim of the research described in this paper is to provide an understanding of the effect of the impact velocity of the impact mass during a laboratory-based dynamic test. Understanding the effect of boundary conditions of laboratory testing will improve Geotechnical Engineers understanding of the performance in an in-situ installation. In addition, due to the limited number of dynamic test facilities, an understanding of the effects of the boundary conditions will aid in the comparison of test results for different products from different test facilities. The research was conducted using an impact tester, whereby a known mass is raised to a known height defining the kinetic energy and velocity of the mass at the point of impact with the test sample after release. The impact velocity was varied between 2.7 m/s and 5.4 m/s, while the kinetic energy of the mass was maintained at 11.5 kJ. While a correlation between the impact velocity and strain rate of the system tested was established, due to the properties of the system tested, the range of impact velocity on which dynamic tests were conducted was insufficient to result in a considerable change in the average impact load, the cumulative proximal displacement and the cumulative maximum energy absorbed over multiple impulse. However, due to the reduction in the momentum of the impact mass the impact duration and displacement during each impulse in the series of impulses reduced. THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna.
