A class of gravity separation unit operations in ore-dressing relies for its operation on the production of a stratified bed. Heavier material gravitates downwards, and separation is achieved by splitting the ore horizontally, with the recovery of a dense stream and a lighter stream. The important ore-dressing unit operations that fall in this class are the jig, the Reichert cone and the pinched sluice. A new quantitative model based on Mayer's potential theory is developed here. This model is developed completely for the simple case of binary mono-size particulate materials, but the extension to units operating with feed material distributed over particle size and density is discussed in principle. The model can be used to predict the performance of these units and is very suitable for simulation. The model is tested successfully against experimental data obtained from a batch jig and a Reichert cone.

Over the past decade there has been a continual decrease in domestic oil reserves accompanied by a sharp increase in the demand for energy. Even with increased imports of foreign oil, the energy demand has not been met. This has forced many users to turn to substitute fuels. Of the many substitute fuels available most users are turning to and creating an increased demand for low sulfur coal. Because of the increased demand for low sulfur coal as well as the inherent problems in producing eastern coal, many producers have turned their attention to the large deposits of low sulfur coal in the western United States. Western coal mining is, however, not without its problems such as high moisture content, high ash content, highly variable sulfur content, multiple seams, and/or pitching seams. It is to aid in the solution of these problems that this chapter is directed.

Room and pillar mining with full pillar extraction is one of the most hazardous systems of underground coal mining, a significant hazard being the potential for sudden goaf override. The Autowarning Telltale (AWTT) is a new development for pillar extraction operations, based on the well proven and simple Rockbolting Telltale safety monitoring device. It is now being applied in room and pillar coal mines in India, with significant potential for application worldwide. The Autowarning Telltale is an intrinsically safe low-cost, self-contained unit installed into the roof either during pillar development or prior to pillar extraction. It provides a highly visible warning via flashing Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) when a preset level of roof movement has been exceeded. The paper provides a full description of the instrument and two case histories of its initial application at fully-mechanized Indian sites using the split and fender technique.

Until a few years ago tunnel construction was based exclusively on experience. In recent years, however, numerical models have increasingly become an integrated part of tunnel design [2]. These models permit good evaluation of the tunnel's support behavior even before it is designed. In particular, numerical methods are highly suited for the development of new construction methods. The prerequisite for this is the application of high-performance pre- and postprocessors, permitting the design engineer to come to a quick interpretation of the analysis results. In future, 3D analysis will take on increasing significance, for which reason this paper also deals with this type of models.

The Bureau of Mines laboratory tested the response of a commercially available real-time aerosol monitor (GCA RAM-1) to various dusts. Monitor measurements were recorded, averaged, and compared with simultaneous gravimtric measurements of each test dust. Tests usually lasted several hours. The test dusts of various particle size distributions used included coal, limestone, and a commercially available test dust. For each particular dust, the monitor response was linear and correlated well with mass concentration over the range of about 0.5 to 10 mg/m3. The monitor can estimate a 2.0-/m3 respirable coal dust concentration within as little as 26 pct with 95 pct confidence. The monitor must, however, be calibrated with the dust to be measured because the instrument response is affected by the type of dust particle. The average monitor response to same mass concentration of coal dust was approximately twice the average monitor response to the same mass concentration of limestone dust.

A plant trial of a new on-line pressure vessel rheometer for slurries, developed at Michigan Technological University, was carried out at a nearby copper concentrator. The rheometer measured the flow curves (shear stress vs. shear rate) of chalcocite slurries. Viscosity of non-Newtonian slurries changes with shear rate and so, for such slurries viscosity measurement at a single shear rate (often seen in the literature for grinding and classification studies) cannot be correlated to process performance. For these slurries, viscosity at various shear rates can be measured from flow curves generated by the pressure vessel rheometer. Other rheological properties, such as flow type and yield stress can be determined by this rheometer to better characterize the slurries. The slurry at the copper concentrator consisted of ground chalcocite ore. The solids content in the slurry varied between 30-60 % by weight. Top size of the particles was 125 micron, and 80% passing size was 34 micron. Measurements by the pressure vessel rheometer showed that most of the slurries had pseudoplastic flow at shear rates below -3000 sec-l, where the viscosity of the slurry decreased with increase in shear rate. Above -3000 sec-l, like a Newtonian fluid, the viscosity of the slurry remained steady. Flow curves and viscosity from the pressure vessel rheometer were verified with a Brookfield viscometer and a vibrating sphere viscometer, and the results were found to be accurate.

British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. The proponent submits reports to the Mine Development Steering Committee in succeeding stages: Prospectus, Stage I (after which approval-in-principle may be granted by ELUC); and if necessary Stage 11. There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. A process has been developed for fabricating thin-film resistors that are compatible with integrated circuits. Films are produced by evaporation of single refractory metals using an electron beam heating source. Resistor paths are then made using standard photoresist etching techniques. A low-temperature coefficient of resistance is obtained by control of nucleation during deposition of the film. One application of the process has been the development of a discrete resistor used for current setting in linear integrated circuits. Multiple thin-film resistors were formed on oxidized silicon substrates using molybdenum metal as a source. An evaporated protective layer of SiO2 over the resistor prevents resistance changes which might occur during subsequent high-temperature processing. Properties of a typical resistor are as follows: R = 15.7 ohm per sq, tolerance surface dimensions = 0.028 by 0.028 in., stable after 4000 hr at 0. 75 w without heat sink. THIN-FILM resistors have been investigated for many years with a large selection of usable resistors resulting from a wide variety of materials. Many of the processes necessitate a high degree of complexity but in nearly all cases the conclusions have been that the materials used in each case were acceptable provided the deposition process was reproducible and could be controlled sufficiently to give the required tolerances. It is our opinion that simplicity is still the key to thin-film resistor fabrication. In this regard, the single metal is obviously the simplest process to control, provided all the necessary properties can be obtained. The idea is not original in this laboratory by any means. Others have taken this approach.' It has been demonstrated that a fairly wide range of resistivities can be obtained by careful control of deposition parameters for any given metal, and by selection of several single metals a very broad range of stable resistors can be obtained. The transition from one metal to the next is made when a film becomes too thin for adequate process control or long-term stability. A great deal of emphasis is once again being placed on the thin-film resistor. Although they have been thoroughly studied in the past, new applications have been found that require the properties obtainable only from thin-film resistors. Integrated circuits, in general, are advancing toward higher speeds and radiation environments which require replacement of the present diffused resistors. Linear circuits in particular are requiring high-power, high-precision resistors for the more advanced applications. The particular requirements of some linear circuits are such that a discrete resistor is required. The resistor described in this paper was developed as a 15.7-ohm precision discrete resistor for use in a current regulating circuit requiring a +2 pct end of life overall tolerance, a dissipation of 750 mw, and the ability to operate over a fairly broad temperature range (i.e., a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR). State-of-the-art integrated circuit and silicon processing technology lends itself well to the fabrication of thin-film resistors. The present case study details the solution to a complex situation in a mining operation, involving the challenge of expanding the tailings storage facility in high-criticality areas adjacent to electrical rooms that provide continuous power to the entire mining process, including water pumping and drainage systems. For this purpose, blasting is required to prepare the construction areas for the new expansion facilities. Upon deciding to proceed with blasting, a comprehensive engineering assessment was conducted to ensure operational continuity without impacting the process, while generating sufficient fracturing in the rock mass to allow extraction with auxiliary equipment. Support from specialists through the Technical Assistance area was requested, and a detailed evaluation was carried out through advanced studies. Field vibration studies were conducted to define attenuation models and characterize the rock mass in the sector. With this information, simulations were carried out using predictive and probabilistic models with Monte Carlo methods to select delay charges and optimal timing for reducing vibration levels and increasing frequency levels. With these measures, the three blasts conducted near the Gas Insulated Substation room, which had distances ranging from 30 to 100 meters, produced the following results: • Vibrations; The three blasts conducted at distances of 100, 30, and 50 meters recorded vibration values of 5.3, 40.2, and 9.5 mm/s, all of which were below the maximum vibration level of 50 mm/s set by the projects area. According to the USBM RI8507-OSMRE standard, all values for Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and frequency were below the permissible limits. • Flyrock; Through filming and post-blast inspection, it was confirmed that the ejections were within the safety zone. • Fragmentation; The results obtained showed a maximum overbreak size of 1.5 meters, allowing the broken material to be moved effectively.

A procedure is given which describes how the gelatin model may be-used to study the effect of mobility ratio on areas swept before and after breakthrough in fluid injection programs. Differences in mobility ratio are achieved through the proper selection of electrolytes for the invading and displaced fluids. The progress of the front is followed visually and photographed or traced onto plates (it desirrd positions before and after breakthrough. Example applications to standard flooding pattrrrls, vertically and horizontally fractured reservoirs and the in-situ combustion recovery process ore presentrtl. INTRODUCTION In water flooding, gas cycling and other fluid injection programs, the sweep efficiencies and swept areas after breakthrough are known to depend on the mobility ratio. Previous investigators have described the application of the X-ray technique, stepwise use of the poten-tiometric model and numerical procedures for studying these problems.1,3,4,6 Others have described the application of the electrolytic and gelatin models for studying sweep efficiencies at a mobility ratio near one.2,5,7,8,9 It is a purpose of this paper to describe a procedure for using the gelatin model to study swept areas at mobility ratios other than one. PROCEDURE The technique developed for gelatin model studies is composed of four phases: the construction of the model, the selection and preparation of electrolytes, the running procedure, and the recording of the swept areas. Each phase is discussed independently in order that the over-all procedure will not be confused. Construction of the Model Since some of the advantages of the gelatin model are its economy, and speed, it is desirable to have as small a model as is possihle without creating error through the inability to follow visually the progress of the colored front. For this work, it was found that a distance of 4 to 6 cm between salt bridges is convenient to use. Since the size is relatively small, it follows that the gelatin layer must be thin. For this study, 1/8 in. was used as the gelatin thickness in each case. The model was constructed on a flat 1/2-in. plastic (Lucite) base with boundaries constructed from 1/8-in. plastic strips. The well pattern to be studied was outlined with the 1/8-in. plastic strips on the base with narrow apertures (- - 2 mm) in the boundary to represent the wells. Behind each well opening, a rectangular area of some 8 to 12 sq cm was outlined by additional plastic strips. The plastic strips were fastened to the base by any suitable non-conducting cement so that the boundary system was liquid tight. The electrodes were constructed from sheet copper in a fashion that would allow easy removal. In this work, it was found that by simply forming a large U-shaped clip from a strip of the copper that would slip over the boundary was satisfactory and easily removed. The electrodes should be as wide as one of the sides of the rectangular area behind the well opening. If a fractured pattern is studied, fractures inside the well pattern may be represented by strips of copper of the desired shape mounted in some easily removable fashion. The reason that apertures (or salt bridges) were used for wells instead of metallic electrodes is that the plating of the electroactive ion at the cathode and the introduction of an electroactive ion at the anode has a detrimental effect on the swept area outline if these operations \rere permitted to be carried on within the well pattern itself. Deep bed media filtration is used as a tertiary treatment step (after hydrocyclones and flotation cells) to remove fine oil droplets and solids from oilfield water before reinjection disposal or to remove particulate material from surface waters used for waterflood injection. Oil and solids injection requirements are typically <5 ppm concentration at <2 micron diameter. The preferred media for produced water filtration is walnut or pecan shell, however the use of this media has evolved by trial & error and the fundamental mechanisms that occur during separation and media cleaning have not been investigated. A project was initiated to fill in this knowledge gap by analyzing the physical, mechanical, chemical, and hydrodynamic properties of six types of granular filtration media (12/20 mesh size): garnet, silica, anthracite, pecan shell, English walnut shell, and black walnut shell. Comparison of bed packing, oil wetting, attrition resistance, particle strength, and fluidization has led to an understanding of the preferred filtration media for separation of fine oil droplets and solids.

High pressure roll grinding (HPGR) is a mature but still expanding comminution technology. In the metals mining industry, HPGR is slowly gaining acceptance as a cost-efficient, high-throughput alternative for plant optimization. The increasing need to treat ores with progressively lower grades, complex mineralogies, refractory metal occurrence and variable rock types requires an energy-efficient comminution technology that reduces metallurgical problems inherent in conventional crushing and grinding, while stabilizing leach and flotation circuits and increasing metals extraction. This paper will summarize our latest HPGR pilot test results for gold and copper projects in the United States and South America and their confirmation through the first HPGR operation in copper mining. This paper will also stress the use of the high pressure grinding roll as a metallurgical tool. The application of HPGR for the treatment of heap leach SX-EW ores, semi-refractory gold ores, waste rock material and concentrator feeds will be illustrated.

According to general guidelines, deposits suitable for surface mining can be divided into two basic categories: horizontal or flat-bedded deposits and inclined or dip-buried deposits. A series of mathematical models for surface mine long-term planning (SMLTP) has been developed and can be used for any kind of deposit. The basic theory and methodology of the models are oriented- graph simulation which combines graph and network theory with a systems simulation technique to form a new approach. From the viewpoint of surface mining and long-term plan modeling, the main differences between the two categories of deposits are analyzed, an important algorithm is put forward, and the structure of the models and some results of applications are introduced. Dynamic and comprehensive optimizations have been completed by the SMLTP model series. Combining different OR branches, the new approach has been proved to be a powerful tool to solve the strategic problems of surface mine planning.

The design of an auxiliary ventilation system for long underground openings (drifts, ramps and shafts), often requires the installation of multiple fans. The fans are installed in series and separated from each other by rigid ducts of fixed or variable length. However, problems relating to excessive leakage often occur, with each project representing a unique problem requiring an efficient solution. In this study, a method to determine the design parameters of an auxiliary ventilation system is presented. The method is based on the principle of partitioning a long ductwork into segments of finite length and solving the resulting networks separately. Specifically, the method is developed to solve two types of problems: constant fan spacing, and constant fan size. In the former, the fan spacing is fixed, and the problem is solved for fan sizes. In the latter, the problem is to solve for fan spacing. An example is used to illustrate the method.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

"The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) is used to model the sacrificial Cathodic Protection System (SCPS) to find the factors effectiveness behaviour. For protection potential assessment the BBD receives (resistivity of environment, sacrificial anode alloy, distance between anode and cathode and surface area for the structure to be protected) as input and gives the protection potential as output. By applying BBD with their analysis tools we get many results. The important results which are the factors individual effectiveness on the sacrificial cathodic protection (SCP) process are the resistivity which has the greatest effect on the potential protection (rank=l) followed by sacrificial anode alloy type (rank=2), surface area for structure protected required (rank=3) and distance between anode and cathode (rank=4). The interaction of sacrificial anode alloy and cathode area {X2X4 ) has significant effect on CP process with the limits which are used in this work while the other factors interaction (X1X2, X1X3, X1X4,X2X3, X3X4 ) has insignificant effect on the limits which used in this work.IntroductionFor carbon steel in seawater the normal corrosion potential E '°""_is in the range -550 to -600 mV vs. Ag/AgCI [1]. The most effective method to overcome the corrosion is cathodic protection {CP) which represents a control method in the steel wall corrosion. Cathodic protection has been used in several areas including marine and underground structures, storage tanks, and pipelines [2]. Sacrificial anodes system generates protective current which depends upon the inherent potential difference between the anodes and the structure to be protected. If the structure is made of iron or steel, any metal that is more active in the electromotive force series can theoretically be used as anode material [3]. There are many factors influencing on cathodic protection like resistivity (NaCl content), chemical composition of sacrificial anode alloy, distance between anode and cathode, surface area of cathode, temperature, humidity, velocity of solution, dust, impurities, bacteria and etc .. The present work studied four factors: NaCl content, resistivity), chemical composition of sacrificial anode alloy, distance between anode and cathode, surface area of cathode) with different three levels of values for each one. Then this work will find the optimum value from the factors levels that tacked to investigated there influencing on sacrificial cathodic protection system."

A frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulator-demodulator (modem) network has been devised for the Bureau of Mines mine-monitoring systems. This network permits an unlimited number of remote stations to communicate with one central station over the same pair of wires. The network operates at a speed of 4,800 Bd at distances up to 5 miles. This report describes the development and operation of the modems. The theory of operation, schematic diagrams, and printed circuit board layouts are provided. Although the modems were built for a specific application, a more general use is discussed whereby the network would operate with a typical serial channel format.
