Limited recourse financing techniques reduce the financial exposure of equity holders to major mining projects by transfering some of the risks to the banks which provide loan funds for project development. This can only be achieved by a clear understanding of the principles involved. Engineering and management decisions on how the resource is to be developed and extracted must be made in the light of lender's requirements. The structure of sales contracts, joint venture agreements and many other documents can be important in limited recourse financing. If projections show that the debt can be repaid from project cash flow, loan agreements and other arrangements can restrict lenders ability to look to the equity holders for repayment of project loans.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to extract potassium from glauconitic sandstone, and the effects of important variables were studied. The reduced time plot (RTP) for all of the variables obtained from the experimental data has been quantified by this simple equation: R = 100 (1 - exp (-0.693 *(T/T50)0.605) The time required for 50% extraction (T50) has been correlated by a regression equation to variables such as acid strength, temperature, fluorite: glauconite ratio and % solids. Both of these equations were used to predict the extraction percentage at different process-variable levels. In addition, several other experiments were conducted at arbitrary levels of the variables to verify the equations developed.

The economics of developing and operating small precious metal mines are unique and require much more scrutiny than larger mines since a limited tonnage must carry a heavy burden of capital investment as well as operating cost per unit ton to be mined and processed. Moreover, potential operators of small mines do not have the required expertise available to critically evaluate the technical and economic aspects of their projects. In this paper, the authors have attempted to provide technical and economic guidelines for developing and operating small precious metal mines. Capital and operating cost estimates as well as return on investment are provided for various scenarios utilizing different mining and processing techniques.

A mathematical model is described for the transfer of hydrophobic compounds from aqueous to an immiscible organic phase using fine bubble aeration; the process otherwise known as "solvent sublation" an adsorptive bubble separation process. The limitations of the model are explored by simulating experimental results both for a batch scale process and a continuous process. The qualitative predictions of the model with respect to the influence of the organic layer (mineral oil) are tested by performing experiments using chloroform and 2,3,6-trichloroanisole as hydrophobic compounds in the aqueous phase. The continuous process is seen to be limited by the requirements of fine bubble generation and the ratio of influent feed rate to air flow rate.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). The system was finally implemented in 1975ò

The phenomena of gas-molten metal reactions for the production of metal matrix composites consist typically of a combination of one or more gas transport steps and a liquid gas reaction step. Reaction products include such strength enhancers, grain refiners, or high thermal conductivity phases as TiC, AIN, SIC, Si3N4, TiN in aluminum alloys. Nitrides, carbides and oxides can be produced at various volume fractions and in fairly fine sizes (500 am to 5 um) in laboratory melts by Reactive Gas Injection method (RGI). Gas injection methodology to produce the reinforcements is attractive because it can potentially be scaled to production scales in excess of 10,000 kg/h. For continuous production, the reactant molten metal can be continuously fed into the .crucible where the reactive gas is injected. The molten metal phase reactant may also be involved in a controlling transport step, depending on its concentration and viscosity. It is well known that the reaction product reinforcement size and shape of these phases have significant impact on the physical, mechanical and thermal properties. The current state of knowledge is unable to predict the kinetics and growth of solid reaction products obtained. The primary goal is to develop a fundamental framework for the understanding and prediction of the particle size in such reaction systems. In addition, the role of gas transport, liquid hydrodynamics and decomposition are important issues. A reaction-transport model is being developed using a reaction, transport, and thermodynamic framework, both at macro and at atomistic level to assess gas - liquid interactions.

Multielement reconnaissance geochemistry coupled with ground scintillation gamma ray measurements has been used to investigate the dispersion patterns of uranium and other major and trace elements in the arid Palmyrides region of central Syria. This region occupies an interplatform depression in the northern part of the Arabia Plate, upon which sediments up to 10 km thick have accumulated. Outcrops of strongly fractured Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks form two major mountain belts, the northern and southern Palmyrides, between which is located the closed Ad-Daww basin, with a thick Neogene and Quaternary clastic cover. Among the various lithologies, phosphorites are well represented. Uranium and associated elements have been incorporated into the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Palaeogene sediments, especially the phosphorites, which are well represented in the region. These elements are derived from three possible sources, namely, sea water, Lower Cretaceous volcanism and metalliferous fluids leaking along taphrogenic lineaments. In and around the phosphorites, numerous traces of secondary uranium mineralization occur. Over 500 geochemical samples of outcropping rock, wadi and playa sediments, overburden and groundwaters were taken over an area of approximately 9000 sq km. Most samples were analyzed for 25 major and trace elements by nebulization ICPAES; for As, Sb, Bi and Se by hydride generation and ICPAES; and for U, Th and La and other REE by neutron activation analysis.

Preliminary recommendations for the Upper Northwest Interceptor 1&2 specified installation of reinforced concrete pipe using pipe-jacking methods. However, a larger one-pass tunnel constructed using precast segmental lining would provide additional storage volume. The risk of encountering unexpected conditions or events and the resulting cost impacts could differ significantly for these two options. A probabilistic life-cycle cost analysis of these alternatives was performed. This paper discusses the construction alternatives considered, the risk assessment methodology used to evaluate these alternatives, the input parameters and risk factors used in this analysis, and the recommended project which is currently being constructed.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

A prototype remote placer drill (RPD) has been designed and successfully tested in the offshore gold district of Nome, AK. The RPD system is unique in its design and in the cooperative support that was provided during its development by industry, academia and government. The RPD was conceived as a low-cost, rapid drill sampling system for the reconnaissance of marine precious metal placer deposits. The drill functions as a counter- f lush system. It incorporates a dual wall casing and a rotating percussion bit driven by way of a drill rod through the central eductor casing by a heavy duty pneumatic rock drill. The cost of drill sampling in the exploration of marine precious metal placers has traditionally been high due to the technical difficulties imposed by the environment and the remoteness of the sampling target. The objective was to reduce capital and operating costs of a drilling program through the development of a portable system incorporating drill compoments having a high power-weight ratio that could be deployed from work vessels of opportunity. A principal design requirement was to operate the system remotely from the sea floor with only flexible connections to the surface. This includes cable for deployment and retrieval and hoses for air supply and sample recovery, thus making the drill system semi-independent of the vessel's sea-induced motion. The prototype RPD underwent full operational test off Nome, AK in late summer 1988. It was deployed from the landing door of a modified LCT vessel, and rigged for a single pass of 5 m (16.5 ft). More than 50 holes were drilled in a wide variety of bottom materials typical of the off shore Nome submerged beach placers. The prototype RPD proved to be an overall success, recovering representative samples throughout the section in all but the heavy boulder ground. Compared with a conventional drill system on board that was assigned to a production drilling system, the RPD was capable of reliably sampling moderate ground less than 6 m (20 ft) in thickness, using a smaller crew and operating in higher sea conditions.

The principle of sliding or graduation in royalties is accomplished either by the block, period, cumulative, or class method. The block method calls for a very low royalty rate on all oil produced up to a certain amount. This amount would normally be that which is believed to suffice to repay the cost of the well. A higher rate would be charged after the well is making a profit. This method, common in many industries, is peculiarly inadaptable to any industry such as this where the productivity per day of the units gradually and inevitably decreases. This, for reasons given later, is because it forces an early abandonment of the well and so offends against conservation. In the period method, the royalty rate is changed by some definite amount when the well produces less than a specified quantity per day or other given unit of time. While simple to explain, it operates badly because a great deal is made to depend upon a small reduction in production, whereas the reduction as a matter of fact declines rather erratically owing to the exigency of lease management, connecting of tankage, and vagaries of the gaugers. These disadvantages are obviated by the cumulative method. In this method, all the production less than a certain amount per week has one rate of royalty, or none at all, and the oil produced in excess of that amount pays an additional rate of royalty. In the long run the calculation is probably no greater than with the period method, for simple tables will be published and printed in the oil papers that can be cut out, enabling quick readings to be made. Even without the table the calculation is easy with the few royalty rates, two or three, which would be used. In this method, the amount paid in royalty declines gradually, rather than suddenly as in the period method. The following reasons might be advanced for the adoption oi cumulative royalties: 1. To distribute the burden in accordance with the capacity to pay. This principle is a unique one in business, although familiar in taxation. This is because it does not distribute reward in proportion to efficiency.

DEFORMATION twinning contributes to the plasticity of titanium and has been reported on {10i2}, {1121},{11221}, {1123}, and {1124} planes.' Twinning on {1011} has also been reported in commercially pure titanium as a result of quenching from 1000', but no reports of such twins occurring as a result of deformation alone are known to the authors. In this study single crystals grown from iodide titanium were compressed parallel to the c axis over the temperature range 25 to 800°C. From it has come evidence that (10il) deformation twins are the most common type between 400" and 800°C. Crystals about 6 mm high with a rectangular cross section measuring about 3 by 4 mm were used in the tests. Chemical analyses showed them to contain 220 to 250 ppm 0 arid 10 to 15 ppm N. The long axes of the crystals were made parallel to the c axis while the sides were parallel to (i100) and (1120), as shown in Fig. 1. The crystals were compressed between polished alumina platens with no lubrication, in a vacuum of 2 x lom5 torr. Between 25' and 300°C the predominant twinning mode was (11221, which is to be expected for this stress state. There was an abrupt change at 400°C, however, and from that temperature up to 800°C twinning took place almost entirely on (10i1 ). Twin planes were determined by the two-surface rnethd. Measurement of the crystal orientation within several (10i1) twins by means of polarized-light4 and transmission electron microscopy showed that the lattice reorientations were the same as those previously reported for the (10i l ) twinning in magnesium.' This reorientation is consistent with The calculated (10il ) twinning shear for titanium is 0.10, while that measured from surface offsets on a (1150) face, which is parallel to the shear direction, was about 0.15. Slip within the twins, or in the matrix adjacent to the twins, probably accounts for the larger measurement. Slip in both locations was judged to have occurred from observations on foils in the electron microscope.

The Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station, whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of LOO meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a arger concentric circle about the station. Principle of Topographic Correction The principle of all topographic corrections is to assume a homogene-ous compositon of the masses around the station in regard to specific gravity as well as a mathematical shape of the topography. The results become the more accurate the closer this mathematical shape is to the actual configuration of the terrain, but naturally the amount of necessary computation also increases. If a standard correction with fixed dis-ances is adopted, the middle error of this method will, therefore, increase as the irregularity of the terrain. Hence, the application of the torsion balance in mountainous areas may be successful only if the disturbances due to heavy masses underneath the surface are so large as to exceed onsiderably the increased middle error due to rugged topography, or,

For a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strenpth- than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laborat,ories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, B and r com-pounds, (17,21,30c) or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. "Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid leach tests were conducted on Elliot Lake and Rabbit Lake ores in the presence of various oxidants, namely: Fe2(SO4)3, CI2, H2O2, NaClO3, MnO2, H2SO5, HNO3, Oxon e, K2Cr2O7, KMnO4, O3 and O2. Uranium extraction is significantly accelerated when an oxidant is present in the leach slurry. Uranium extraction of 96-99% can be achieved by maintaining the oxidation potential of the leach slurry in the range of400 to 500 m V (S.H.E.). A rough cost comparison of all the oxidant s indicates that the use of Fe2(SO4)3, 02, O3, C12, HNO3 or MnO2 is far less expensive than NaClO3 and the uranium extraction rates are similar to or better than with NaCIO3. For uranium extraction, it is concluded that gaseous oxygen (i.e., air or oxygen) would be the most effective and economical oxidant for the 24- to 36-hour leach of Elliot Lake ore; whereas for the 8- to I2-hour leach of Rabbit Lake ore, a strong chemical oxidant (e.g. NaCIO3, H202, 03, K2Cr2O7, H2SO5 or HNO3) would be a logical choice.IntroductionThe common practice for the treatment of uranium o res is leaching with sulphuric acid or with a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture. Generally, the latter process is ad opted when an excess (> 18%) of acid-consuming components (e.g., carbonate) is present in the ore. Irrespective of the nature of the leachant, the addition of an oxidant to the leach mixture is necessary to obtain a high uranium extraction.The maximum extraction of uranium can only take place when all the uranium is in the highest oxidation state (i.e.,U +6-uranic ion) . Because a certain percentage of uranium present in the ore is invariably in the lower oxidation state (i.e.,U+4-uranous ion) , the addition of an oxidant to the leach slurry is necessary to oxidize uranous ion to the uranic state."

The hydrothermal agglomerating process described (U.S. Pat. 3,235,371, (1966)) is different from the conventional high temperature processes. Green pellets or briquettes made with mixtures of moist iron ore concentrates and burned or hydrated lime fines are hardened in an autoclave at 198°C and under steam pressure for 1/2 to 5 hours, with or without previous drying. Under the neutral conditions, oxidation of magnetite does not occur as in the conventional processes. The resulting agglomerates are hard and resistant to abrasion and weathering, and they do not disintegrate in the Linder test. The equipment required for the process is not complicated, and favorable operating costs are projected because of the low temperature and efficient heat recuperation. A low capital investment makes the process attractive even when the annual pellet production is below a million tons.

VAN GRAAN, M.Sc (Pretoria) (Visitor) Microclimate suits have been shown to be very effective in decreasing physiological strain in hot, wet environments, thus enabling men to work without risk in areas that would normally carry a high risk of heat stroke. In this paper, some design considerations in the development of the frozen jacket are described. Water complied with most of the desirable properties required of a coolant material for use In a microclimate suit. The Human Sciences Laboratory has developed a jacket in which ice is used as the coolant and which is designed according to the most acceptable anthropometrical characteristics. The jacket consists of an inner poncho-type waistcoat containing 28 water compartments. Over this is worn an insulating jacket, which minimizes warming of the coolant by the environment. Suitable refrigeration units have been developed to freeze the jackets underground. Laboratory tests have shown that these jackets are effective for about 2,5 hours, Irrespective of the wet-bulb environment, when men are working at a moderate rate. Jackets should, however, be used only in environments in which the wet-bulb temperature is in the range of 32,S0 to 35,S °C.

This paper focuses on a case study at a base metal mine located in a tropical semi-arid area of Western Australia (WA). It is demonstrated that understanding the geochemical nature of the mine tailings forms an integral part of innovative management strategies developed throughout the life-of-mine (LOM) when planning for mine closure. The tailings are currently stored at an above-ground valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF) and one option for long-term management under consideration is leaving the tailings in situ at mine closure and covering using the concept of an enhanced æstore and releaseÆ cover system.Extensive geochemical and mineralogical studies have found that the geochemical behaviour of the tailings in the TSF is significantly more benign than initially predicted. The sulfide content of the tailings is primarily pyrrhotite, which can be acid-forming, acid-neutral or acid-consuming depending on a number of factors including redox conditions. Tailings pore water at depth is pH neutral with excess alkalinity, low concentrations of dissolved metals and elevated sulfate concentration.Recent geochemical tests on tailings samples indicate that a reduction in the acid potential and a corresponding increase in the neutralising potential of the tailings, through partial removal of pyrrhotite at the ore processing stage, has the potential to further reduce the long-term risk of potential impact to the environment from any TSF seepage. A number of issues relating to the computational aspects of pillar design are addressed in this paper. The computation of average pillar stress values is important when attempting to establish criteria for pillar design and in the analysis of the stability of tabular pillar layouts. One of the default ?classic? numerical methods that are used to determine pillar stresses is the displacement discontinuity method. In many instances it is not clearly understood that this approach does suffer from some limitations, particularly in relation to the fact that in coarse element simulations, the simulated average pillar stress (APS) can depend on the chosen mesh size. The nature of this error is highlighted in this paper and some strategies are suggested to bound the magnitude of these errors. It is demonstrated as well that the popular linear stiffness approximation to pillar or seam compressibility does appear to allow reasonably accurate estimates of the average pillar stress when either the pillar height is varied or when the seam modulus differs from the host rock modulus. A practical implication of this study is that if the seam modulus is noticeably lower than that of the host rock, such as for coal seams, it is important to use a linear stiffness constitutive model for the pillars rather than a ?rigid? pillar assumption. This added complexity seems unnecessary, however, when simulating hard rock pillars in mines where the seam modulus is very similar to that of the surrounding rock.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. A marked similarity existed between at least 7 of the 10 type seam sequences formed. The configurations of the vitrite-plus-clarite contents of the plies of 95 per cent of the seams could be formed from different arrangements of 3 basic sequences: (i) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-rich and an upper vitrite-poor ply; (ii) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-poor and an upper vitrite-rich ply; and (iii) a four-ply sequence of 3 plies with vitrite-plus- clarite decreasing upwards, terminating in a vitrite- rich ply. The third basic sequence was very similar to a succession described for some British Carboniferous coals. Eighty per cent of the Australian Permian coal seams studied began with the first (i) basic type of sequence and are interpreted as originating in peat- forming areas which became progressively drier. More than half the seams were formed in an area with a stable depositional surface level which was subject to oscillations of small amplitude.. Many (30%) were formed in an area with a steadily rising depositional surface level.
