Prior to any detailed discussion, I'd like to say that Dr. Aplan has made direct hits on two important considerations: 1) The most demanding need in Fine Coal research is to develop improved methods of sulfur reduction. 2) The areas of particle (impurity) liberation and froth flotation hold real near-term promise as techniques for improved sulfur removal. Digressing for a moment, I thin kwe can all remember the time when the biggest problem facing coal research was simply defined - "No money!" In the mid 70's we suddenly found ourselves dealing with a product worth five to seven times the value it carried in the mid60's. All of a sudden, we're talking about a high-profile, high- value commodity. The coal industry still hasn't made the complete psychological adjustment - especially in the operating areas (prep plants included). We have a valuable material at hand which is, in' many cases still being processed as though it were a two or three dollar per ton item. Simply put, I think that while the industry has made some major strides during this transition, a stronger commitment of attitude (and finances) needs to be made toward deeper definition of beneficiation work. Back to specifics - Dr. Aplan has really highlighted three areas where strong research efforts are needed. 1) Liberation processes - not limited to mechanical comminution - must be more fully studied.The industry certainly needs a better handle on value returned (improved ability to beneficiate) for dollars spent on improved liberation. 2) Flotation processes probably hold the most promise for near- term improvement in fine coal beneficiation technology. New approaches for the fire refining process of blister copper have been carried out at the Codelco Norte Smelter. These have been mainly focused on modification and improvement of the process configuration based in fluid-dynamic and metallurgical studies of the oxidation and impurity treatment stages. This paper presents the results of the laboratory simulations and industrial tests performed in the 250 t anode furnace, evaluating two different process configurations: ? Bottom Bath Agitation System in the vessel during the oxidation stage, ? Dual Flux Injection System during the impurity treatment stage. The results show the possibilities of effective removal of high content of sulfur from the melt during the oxidation stage by using the bottom bath agitation. As the environmental movement gained force during the past few years, it was inevitable that attention would be focused on surface mining, and we have seen this method of extracting minerals from the ground come under heavy attack by conservation groups, the press and television, legislators at all levels of government,, and the public at large. It is difficult, and in some situations, perhaps impossible, to measure either the need for, or the results of, land reclamation in absolute terms. Therefore, much of the criticism of surface mining has been based upon subjective analysis rather than hard data, with the result that discussion of the subject often includes a fair amount of emotional response. To be fair, this reaction is not limited to just our critics; even we hard headed engineers sometimes respond in the same way, an observation with which you may agree when I finish this talk. This leads to the thought that whether you are for it, or against it, land reclamation in many respects is a state of mind. That is, our reaction to it can vary considerably, depending on how far we have thought it through. And think it through we must, because the pressures being brought to bear need to be met with positive actions if the problem is to be brought under control, and in the next few minutes I would like to discuss from a management point of view some ideas which might aid in this thinking process. It would be a mistake, I believe, to think that the current energy crisis will suddenly bring the environmental movement to a stop, and therefore, we can relax and go back to running our busi¬ness the way we used to. A numerical study done to test the efficacy of heuristics developed for the design of measurement networks for high precision metallurgical accounting is presented in this paper. The heuristics considered were designed to maximise variance reduction of terminal stream measurements through data reconciliation for observable linear flow systems. A complex metallurgical process flow sheet from the mineral sands industry was used as a case study. Monte Carlo type simulations coupled with a non-linear programming based steady state data reconciliation algorithm were used as tools to investigate the heuristics. The results obtained suggested a close correlation between magnitudes of measured variances and the respective levels of variance reduction obtained through data reconciliation for both internal and terminal streams. It was observed that variance reduction through data reconciliation was maximised for terminal stream measurements in networks characterised by high precision measurement of internal streams and/or in flow sheets characterised by high ?stream to node ratios?. Terminal streams attached to highly interconnected parent nodes were observed to experience higher reductions in variance compared to terminal streams attached to less interconnected parent nodes. The results generally highlight the additional benefits of highly interconnected flow sheets and high precision internal stream measurement regimes on the maximisation of variance reduction of terminal stream measurements through data reconciliation. These findings are significant to metallurgical accounting and to process accounting applications in general in that they provide a conceptual basis for design decision making regarding the construction of measurement networks aimed at maximising variance reduction of targeted streams through data reconciliation.

Poor visibility of powered industrial vehicles, such as forklifts, used in industry is often the cause of accidents that include pedestrians. Current standards allow up to 20 % non-visible regions for forklifts where measurement of these regions is performed by using lamps. A collaboration of research organizations, including National Institute of Standards and Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology (NIST), and Direct Dimensions, has been evaluating advanced methods for measuring a forklift operator?s visibility. These methods can potentially improve visibility standards. They can also help forklift and sensor manufacturers to determine (1) how visibility-assist sensors and algorithms can be designed and (2) where sensors can be mounted on forklifts. This paper includes explanation of visibility measurement experiments performed and results, associated language suggested to standards organizations, and a prototype design for measuring the visibility of forklifts automatically.

Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

Gold and Resource Developments NL (GRD) operates the Macraes Gold Project in East Otago in the South Island of New Zealand, treating a carbonaceous, refractory sulphidic gold ore. The ore is concentrated by flotation, then reground, followed by CIL cyanidation, to minimise loss to the preg-robbing natural carbonaceous material. As the mine has progressed there has been some variation in the preg-robbing nature of the ore, with average overall gold recovery generally in the range 70- 75 %. The Macraes Gold Project has been operating since 1990 and still has an estimated 11 year mine life, which has stimulated the continuing drive to enhance gold recovery. Testwork in 1994 showed there was no improvement in CIL gold recovery after conventional acid pressure oxidation of Macraes Gold Project flotation concentrate. Hence roasting was initially considered as the preferred option to improve gold recovery, being the only established technology to deal with both carbonaceous preg-robbing and sulphide encapsulation. However Newmont Gold Company pressure oxidation technology, as used at Twin Creeks in Nevada, has proved to be applicable to the Macraes Gold Project concentrate. Pilot scale testwork has shown that both roasting and pressure oxidation could achieve similar CIL gold recoveries on the concentrate. However, capital cost, simpler arsenic stabilisation, the ability to operate autothermally at a lower concentrate sulphur grade and simpler environmental consenting factors, has tipped the balance in favour of pressure oxidation. Overall average gold recovery is expected to improve to approximately 84% with adoption of pressure oxidation. GRD has appointed Minproc Limited as EPCM contractor to install pressure oxidation at the Macraes Gold Project, together with upgrading the existing flotation and grind circuits at a cost of NZ$ 30M (US$ 16M). Construction is 60% complete and on schedule for 1 October 1999 start up.

The purpose of this work was to develop and field test improved knee protection for underground coal miners working in low seam mines. In a previous phase of this contract (Sanders, 1982), experimental knee pads were developed and field tested. The field test revealed several design deficiencies with the knee pads, and suggestions for improving the design were made. The work summarized in this report, therefore, consists of modifying the design and method of fabrication of the knee pads originally describes by Sanders (1982), and of field testing the improved design. The new prototype was shorter and wider than the original design, and used a neoprene pass-through strap design rather than a cloth strap molded into the pad itself. The new prototype was constructed by slush molding a hollow bladder that was then filled with foam. Initial reactions to the pads in the field test were very positive. However, after two months, the opinions about the new prototype became less positive. They were judged, generally, to be no better or worse than the pads usually worn by the field-test participants. Problems were encountered in the field with respect to durability. Water seeped into the inner cavity of many of the pads and caused the foam to deteriorate. It was concluded that it would not be cost-effective or feasible to significantly improve upon current commercially available knee pad designs.

The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.

"At the pre-construction foundations of the controlled waste disposal site built at the Port of Kinuura, the clayey soil account for the most, and with lesser amounts of sand compaction piles and sand mat. The cement deep mixing method (CDM) was used to improve ground impermeability and to reinforce the foundations on the seawall. Laboratory mixing and testing was performed to determine the appropriate quantities of cement additive for clayey soil, SCP sand, and sand mat. The test results indicated that maintaining the design strength of qu = 1,550 kN/m2 would require C = 100 kg/m3 of cement additive for all three soil types (clayey soil, SCP sand, sand mat). The permeability performance needed to improve ground impermeability assumes a permeability coefficient of K = 1.0×10-6cm/s. And the clayey soil satisfied the performance requirements at C = 100 kg/m3. However, to improve grand impermeability of the SCP sand and sand mat required more than 5% of particles having diameters of less than 75 µm. Thus, in the latter two cases, the required cement adding quantity was C = 250 kg/m3. The test specimens at one to two weeks after the created with a permeability coefficient of K = 10-6cm/s became permeability coefficient of K = 10-7cm/s six week later due to the effects of cement solidification. So the permeability coefficient declined about one order. The permeability coefficient three months later tends to decline continued with a somewhat lower.INTRODUCTIONBetween 2008 and 2011, the Aichi Seaside Environment Center constructed the Kinuura No. 3 offshore controlled waste final disposal site at Taketoyo in Aichi prefecture. The disposal site offers a landfill capacity of 5.21 million m3 and measures 472,000 m2 in area, of which some 344,000 m2 is a managed controlled sector enclosed within an impermeable seawall."

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. GRINDING costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actu-ally done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement, industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding.
