This report describes the development and limited testing of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Compact Service Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 1,000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to three remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 3 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an umbilical 'cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in an above ground test tower. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance to date.

The mining industry’s commitment to innovation reflects a history of adopting technological advancements to enhance workplace safety, environmental sustainability and vocational training. The objective of this research was to develop an augmented- reality (AR) system for heavy-equipment operators (HEOs) in surface mining. The developed system has the potential to enhance mine safety, training and data-driven decision- making, which presents a significant step toward a more sustainable, effective and technologically driven mining training, contributing to the industry’s evolution and growth. The AR training system leverages Microsoft’s Power Platform and HoloLens 2 capacities to provide operators with detailed and immersive training guides for three mining equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders and haul trucks. AR guides combine speech controls, 3D objects, informative images and explicative videos in the real working conditions to enhance the operator’s learning process. The system has the potential to modify the training structure based on user performance and provides an efficient approach to data collection during training. This project was developed and applied through a case study in a surface mine in the Southern United States.

Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. In January, 1964, three years of laboratory and pilot plant test work reached its culmination. The San Manuel Div. of the Magma Copper Co. switched its molybdenite extraction circuit from the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process to the new process described in this paper. The San Manuel Div. Concentrator of the Magma Copper Co. is located near San Manuel, Ariz., approximately 45 miles northeast of Tucson. The concentrator treats approximately 35,000 tons of ore per day containing about 0.85% copper and 0.025% molybdenite. The San Manuel ore body is a disseminated copper deposit in quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite; minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite and covellite are also present in varying degrees. Pyrite makes up somewhat more than half the sulfide content of the rock. The molybdenite is nearly always found on fracture faces or associated with quartz veinlets.' On January 9, 1964, the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process that had been used for molybdenite recovery was replaced by the following process: 1) A conditioning step with hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate. 2) A two stage rougher flotation step with stove oil and sodium ferrocyanide. 3) One cleaning step with sodium ferrocyanide. 4) One cleaning step with sodium hypochlorite and potassium ferricyanide. 5) Four cleaning steps with an anti-foam Exfoam 636 and potassium ferricyanide. COPPER CONCENTRATOR Since molybdenite recovery is closely allied with previous steps in the operation, the copper concentrator will be briefly described first. The ore is ground to approximately 5% plus 65-mesh and 65% minus 200-mesh in a two-step grinding circuit consisting of rod mills in open circuit and ball mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. A straight forward rougher circuit producing only one concentrate is used. The rougher concentrate is combined with the discharge from the regrind ball mills and is then cycloned, with the overflow going directly to the cleaner circuit and the underflow going to the regrind mills. The feed to the cleaner circuit is approximately 90% to 94% minus 325 mesh. The cleaner circuit consists of two stages in which the tailing from the final cleaner stage is returned to the primary cleaner and the primary cleaner tailing is returned to the rod mill discharge at the head of the circuit. Approximately 0.013 lb of the allyl ester of amyl xanthate (S-3302) per ton of ore is added to the rod mills and approximately 0.006 lb of sodium isopropyl xanthate (2-11) per ton of ore is stage added down the rougher banks. The frother used is methyl iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) and it is added at various points in the grinding and the rougher flotation circuits. Lime is added to the ball mills and/or to the rod mills to maintain the desired pH in the rougher flotation. The rougher flotation has been operated at various pH levels between 10.5 and 11.5. Fuel oil is added in the regrind mills at a loading of approximately 0.01 lb per ton of ore. Factors Which Directly Affect Molybdenite Recovery: It has been found at San Manuel that, to obtain maximum molybdenite recovery, an oily type flotation collector must be added in the grinding circuit. When molybdenite is crystallized in the characteristic platy form, which appears to be the case almost all of the time at San Manuel, its surface has a greater tendency to adhere to oils than water. 2 Of the several oily type collectors available on the market, the allyl ester of amyl xanthate seems to be the best molybdenite promoter. The floatability of San Manuel's molybdenite does not appear to be affected, at least up to a pH of 11.5, by lime. It has been reported that at several plant operations high lime alkaline circuits have adversely affected the molybdenite recovery.3,4 It has been found through microscopic studies that the bulk of the chalcopyrite will float before the molybdenite in both the rougher and cleaner circuits. A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. W.H. Moyer In reference to the section “Excess pyrite, ” the author discusses difficulties in separating chalcopyrite from pyrite. A technique does exist, and has been used commercially, for the flotation, separation, and recovery, if desired, of both chalcopyrite and pyrite. The method was described in Mining Engineering, March 1966, “An Improved Flotation Method for Cornwall Sulfides. ” While it was not used on a porphyry copper ore, it was used on a chalcopyrite - pyrite-containing ore and might well have application. Both sulfides, chalcopyrite and pyrite, were floated simultaneously using xanthate as a collector and MIBC frother to produce a cleaned sulfide product. This concentrate was then thickened and conditioned at high solids with aeration and lime to a pH above 12.0 for a period of 1.5 to 2 hr. A supplemental suppressant, such as cyanide, could be used if necessary to sharpen the subsequent separation; however, it was not required at Cornwall. The conditioned sulfides were floated with two stages of cleaning to produce a highgrade chalcopyrite froth product and a pyrite sink product barren in copper. The separation at Cornwall gave a 28.6q. Cu grade chalcopyrite product and a pyrite analyzing 0.0670 Cu. A desliming step on the raw ore initially used at Cornwall for a period of time was later discontinued. Advantages to be found in using a strong sulfide collector, such as a xanthate, is the rapid flotation it induces and, generally, an ability to float at a coarser grind. A following regrind circuit could be used to give maximum liberation and produce a clean sulfide concentration. The “differential” separation is concerned primarily with grade and with assuring a barren pyrite for maximum recovery.

During the last few years, low cement castable refractories found more application in industry, because of good low and high temperature mechanical properties.In the case of alumina based castables ,usually fume silica or reactive alumina are used as superfines in the matrix to form mullite at high temperature which depends to source of alumina . Mullite network formation improves the hot mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of bodies. The mullitisation of andalusite (so called primary mullite) also produces a certain amount of rich silica glass, part of it being expelled out of the grain. This phenomenon restrict the application of andalusite low cement castable in pig iron ladle. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time and undischarged pig iron are the main ones.Therefore monolithic refractories such as castables which increase thermal shock resistance could be substituted. Regarding to ternary phase diagram of Al2O3-SiO2-CaO ,fumed silica was selected as fine particle.After optimization of particle size distribution by using of modified andreasen equation and rehological properties ,different mixture were composed with andalusite ,fume silica, reactive alumina,secar 71 ,SiC and kyanite.All aggregates system components were mixed dry for 1 min in hobart mixer .After water addition wet mixing was continued until getting flowing about 4 min.The ready mixes were poured in the moulds of of 25mm X 25mm X 140mm with vibrations .After demoulding the samples were cured for 24 hrs and dried at 110OC/18hrsand then fired at 1100-1500OC. Physical ,mechanical ,phase analysis(XRD) and microstructure studies (SEM)were carried out according to ASTM standards. Results showed that by addition of kyanite ,more mullite phase formed through the matrix but,because of expansion occured during this phase transformoration, some cracks formed and mechanical properties decreased.By SiC addition the silica film on the surface of SiC lead to improvement of mechanical properties at high temperature

We have obtained by computer methods the solutions of the Taylor analysis1 for axisymmetric flow in bcc metals. Four modes of slip have been treated in detail:2-4 (111), {112}(111), {123}( 111), and a mixture of all three. In addition to obtaining anisotropy of strength data for randomly oriented or textured polycrystalline material,4 we have also obtained the lattice rotation resulting from slip on the predicted systems. The patterns of lattice rotation are essential to an improved understanding of texture development during deformation. The present note shows the results of lattice rotation for 5 pct axisymmetric compression, for fifty-two axial orientations distributed at 5-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The data are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 for the four modes of slip. The lattice rotation is indicated by a vector, the ends of which correspond to the positions before and after the deformation. The different vectors emanated from a given orientation represent different combinations of five slip systems that satisfy Taylor&apos;s minimum shear criterion.&apos; Fig. 1 shows the results for {110}< 111> slip. They are similar to those obtained by Bishop5 for the case of (111 )(110) slip in axisymrnetric tension, since in axisymmetric flow the sense of lattice rotation for {111)( 110) in tension is the same as that for (110) (111) in compression. The pattern of lattice rotation may be divided into three regions: region A in which the rotation is toward [100]; region B, toward [lll]; and region C, toward either [ loo] or L lll]. Although some slip combinations in region C lead to [1101, the latter is not stable as continued activity of the same combinations will eventually move the axis toward [loo] or Llll]. It may also be noted that [loo] is itself not stable. However, close inspection of the vectors in region A shows that it is impossible for an axial orientation within A to rotate outside its boundary. Hence after heavy compression, all orientations from A and some from C are expected to form a diffuse band in the [100] vicinity. By far the largest region is B. Here all orientations rotate to [lll], which is a truly stable position. Thus the [111] texture component is expected to be rather sharp. For the case of (112 }( 111) slip, Fig. 2, region C is enlarged at the expense of A, with B about the same as for {110}( 111) slip. A significant difference, however, is that [loo], as well as [Ill], is now truly stable. Fig. 3 shows the results of slip on {123}( 111) systems. Region B is substantially enlarged at the expense of C, with A being intermediate in size between the {110}(111) and {112}(111) cases. Like the case of {110)( 111) slip, [100] is itself unstable. However, the lattice rotations here are confined to less than 5 deg; hence it may be considered "stable" for practical purposes. Finally, Fig. 4 shows the results of mixed slip. Here region B is the largest, and C the smallest, of all the cases considered. Both [loo] and [ill] are stable. The behavior of the three corner positions is, in fact, identical to the case of {112)( 111) slip, Fig. 2; it turns out that in these positions for the mixed slip case, all the active slip systems (based on Taylor&apos;s criterion) belong to pure {112}( 111) .4 In summing up the results for the four modes of

The collapse of the Vale S.A. mining tailings dam in 2019, a tragic event that shook Brazil and the world, had consequences that transcended the immediate pain and devastation. Among them, the suspension of rock blasting activities in several mines in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This measure, taken as a precaution and with the aim of ensuring the safety of nearby geotechnical structures and the population, had a significant impact on the mining production chain. To overcome these challenges and resume blasting activities in a safe and sustainable manner, the mining industry has been dedicated to developing and improving solutions. One of the promising alternatives is the signature hole technique, used in conjunction with attenuation laws. The complex geology of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, with lenses of compact ores immersed in friable materials, the presence of discontinuity families, and the emergence of geological faults, requires detailed analyses and specific adaptations of the signature hole technique and constant monitoring of the vibrations to calibrate the attenuation laws to ensure compliance with permissible limits and safety of the operations. To demonstrate the methodology, a case study in Abóboras Mine was described. Additionally, the challenge of achieving the desired level of production while controlling vibration and slope damage has driven the development of new charging and timing techniques. To address this challenge, a comprehensive approach was undertaken. A substantial database containing more than 4,000 registers of blasting-induced vibration events from 520 blasts was meticulously compiled from 2020 to 2023, 6 different attenuation laws were established and continuously calibrated with 99.3% of compliance regarding permissible limits of vibrations. The successful implementation of these actions allowed for the resumption of blasting, increasing production from 10 million metric tons to 43 million metric tons per year assuring sustainable operation.

An advanced semi-stochastic algorithm for constrained multi-objective optimization has been adapted and combined with experimental testing and verification to determine optimum concentrations of aJ10ying elements in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant H-Series austenitic stainless steel alloys. The objective was to simultaneously maximize a number of alloy&apos;s mechanical properties. This research will result in a rigorous tool for the design of high-strength H-Series steels and other types of alloys unattainable by any means existing at the present time. Such a material-by-design tool will also be able to reduce or minimize the need for the addition of expensive elements such as Cr, Ni, Co, Nb, Ti, V, etc. and still obtain the optimum properties of an aJ1oy.

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions applicable to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance concerning the minimum size and/or in situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and predict exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust under the present conditions. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the minesite by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

In hard rock mining, large-scale bulk mining methods such as block or panel caving (BC/PC) and sublevel caving (SLC) typically generate significant surface deformations such as subsidence. Surface deformations need to be considered in the project evaluation and planning stages of cave mines, for example, planning and location of critical underground mine planning infrastructure such as portals, haulage and vent shafts, access roads, or potential damage to existing infrastructure, changes to surface water management, waste dump, stockpile and tailings dam stability, and environmental impacts. Assessing the impact and risks associated with subsidence is a key component in robust mine planning and operations management.

The South African mineral resource royalty system, initiated in 2010, employs a hybrid ad valorem approach tied to profitability ratios. This rate is then applied to the total revenue from mineral sales. In this article we explore how the profitability ratio in the mineral resource royalty formulae interacts with the gold tax formula as applied to South African gold mines, devising a strategy for cut-off grade optimization. The study focuses on nine narrow, tabular-reef (Witwatersrand) gold mines. The approach involves a mixed-integer cut-off grade optimizer utilizing Excel Solver, incorporating relevant royalty and income tax formulae. Different mineral resource royalty cost scenarios were examined. Ignoring these costs in the break-even analysis lowers the cut-off grade but slightly boosts profits compared to considering expected costs. The developed optimizer model, recognizing the profitability aspect of the mineral resource royalty and income tax formulae, yielded a 6% lower cut-off grade than the base case. This is significant for increasing mine life. While the profit differences are marginal (0.2% compared to the break-even base case), substantial improvements were noted: a 6% increase in stope tons above cut-off grade, and a 4% rise in total revenue. Enhanced resource utilization (3% extra gold kilograms) reduces necessary development and overall costs, allowing for a reduction in the cut-off grade and ultimately, more profit.

Mining is essential for facilitating human development particularly as demand for critical minerals grows. However, over the mine life cycle, the environment is permanently changed. Once mining ceases, mine-affected land can leave significant legacy issues on the surrounding environment if not managed. Therefore, mine closure planning is critical. Mine closure occurs over large scales often with the aim of recreating resilient ecosystems over mined landscapes with mitigated negative impacts. The natural state of the landscape and the environmental risks over planning time-scales are largely driven by climate. Climate change is expected to impact different parts of the post-mining landscape, from stable landform design (soil erosion mitigation) to revegetation efforts and pit lake management. Consequently, mine closure plans may need to account for a non-stationary and uncertain future climate, that may be both different to the current climate and evolve during the mine life and post-closure. Here a new data-based approach is presented for incorporating climate change projections in mine closure planning, based on the recently released Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) climate data used in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report. The approach: (i) characterises closure-related attributes of the future climate, and (ii) identifies the amount (and direction) of change expected to occur, and its uncertainty, focusing on five metrics for demonstrative purposes and initially describing changes in erosive potential below. This provides information on the type of future environment (ie the changing baseline) that mine closure should plan towards, and identifies rehabilitation options that may be susceptible to increased risks from climate change.

This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pet; reductions of 38 to 79 pet were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

"Respirable dust in underground coal mines has long been associated with lung diseases, and regular dust sampling is required for assessing occupational exposures. At present, respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined, but considering recent and yet unexplained increases in the incidence of lung disease amongst miners in specific geographic regions, more information about specific dust characteristics is urgently needed. While particle-level dust analysis is ideal, it is impractical for large numbers of dust samples because it is both time and cost intensive. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), however, is an alternative option, which offers the ability to determine the total coal to mineral mass ratio in a dust sample – analogous to proximate analysis of bulk coal samples for determining ash content. Here, preliminary development of a TGA method for this purpose is presented. The method is being developed to evaluate dust collected on mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters using approved permissible sampling equipment. INTRODUCTION Based on the particle size, airborne mine dust can be classified in three categories: inhalable dust (< 100 µm in size), thoracic dust (< 25 µm in size), and respirable dust (< 5 µm in size) (Ramani et al., 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO, 1999) defines inhalable dust particles as those which can be breathed into the nose and mouth, and thoracic dust particles as those which can penetrate airways of the head and enter the airways of the lung. On the other hand, respirable dust particles can penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles into the gas-exchange regions (alveoli) of the lungs (WHO, 1999). Hlavay (1992) reported that the seriousness of the damage in the lungs and respiratory tract is based on amount of dust remaining in these organs, and the amount of dust depends on the extent of dust exposure, the size distribution of the dust particles, and the capability of the body for dust elimination. Inhalation of respirable coal dust by miners can cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease which is called coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). Silicosis is another fatal lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica dust. In CWP and silicosis, dust particles deposit in the lungs, damage the lung tissue, and ultimately cause scarring which cannot be reversed (Colinet, 2010). While overall incidence occupation-related lung disease amongst coal miners in the US has been declining for over 40 years, it appears that there has been a recent increase in specific locations in Central Appalachia (CDC, 2006; Pollock et al. 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011). Although this trend is yet unexplained, one theory is that particular dust characteristics in these locations may be a factor (Hassan and Lau; Page & Oraniscak 2002). For example, several studies have indicated that different coals may generate different amounts of respirable dust (e.g., see Page, 1993 and Litton and Page, 1994), and the surrounding geology may also play a role in terms of the types of dust particles generated. Although respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined as part of regulatory compliance sampling, more information about specific dust characteristics (e.g., size, shape and composition) is urgently needed."

This report covers the period January 1963 through December 1963; it is a continuation of the series that began with the publication of Information Circular 7516 in October 1949. Also, it is the fifth in a series of reports prepared under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers.
