A survey of the resources of mineral fuels, coal, petroleum and natural gas presupposes a clear distinction between the known amount underground and the "proven reserves"; the'portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the coal and petroleum in producing fields is or can be economically brought to the surface and not all of this is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the wells is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that of the total amount of coal underground about 40 per cent remains unrecovered, or is otherwise wasted, before it reaches the consumer; that only some 25 per cent of the petroleum in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and that even if practically the entire volume of natural gas can be economically utilized, in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total produced is now absolutely wasted. And the dissipation of this gas, unwarranted as it is, not only diminishes the gas supply but diminishes also the proven reserves of petroleum from such fields as the Panhandle of Texas, where petroleum and natural gas are produced simultaneously. Many factors affect the estimates of the proven reserves of mineral fuels, such as the capacity and nature of the reservoir, its depth, the quality of the product, the efficiency of recovery, the price of the fuel and its byproducts, etc., etc., but superseding at times all of these in connection with petroleum and natural gas deposits is the effect of "subsoil ownership" on the rate and methods of exploitation of the deposits. As a result it should be a comparatively simple matter to eliminate waste and overproduction, and thereby increase the proven reserves of petroleum and natural gas, in Russia, Iran and Iraq, where the subsoil rights are nationalized, or in any country in which there is or can be quickly established an effective legal control of the underground deposits and the manner of their exploitation. The application of submerged electric arc furnace smelting techniques to tin concentrates at the Capper Pass tin smelter in England is discussed. Some experimental data from earlier small scale 50 KVA electric smelting testwork on various low and medium grade tin concentrates is presented. Design considerations for the construction of a 3 MVA electric furnace to treat tin concentrates from the East Kemptville mine in Canada are considered, together with necessary precautions peculiar to the construction of a high grade smelter in close proximity to an existing low grade, complex non-ferrous metal smelting operation<. Slag composition modifications to optimise operational smelting conditions for various concentrates treated are discussed, together with refractory selection. The effect of concentrate impurity levels on the permissible degree of recycle to produce a satisfactory metal product is highlighted.

Oxygen ion conducting yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tube was used to remove oxygen from molten Cu at 1373K. Outer surface of the tube was in contact with the melt and the inner surface containing a thin layer of porous Ni-ZrO2 cermet electrode was in contact with a reducing gas. The migration of oxygen species (O2-) from the Cu melt through the YSZ tube is accompanied by an equal and opposite flux of electrons maintaining electroneutrality. Without applying an external EMF, the fluxes are maximized by short circuiting the melt with the cermet electrode. For efficient oxygen removal, the YSZ tube must be thin, contact resistances should be negligible, and the electrodes must be porous and cover the entire electrolyte surface for charge transfer. This refining process is environmentally sound, can use reducing gases such as H2, CH4 and CO without running the risk of increasing H or C content of the melt.

Projects as regards state-of-the-art mechatronic systems aiming at increase of safety in the mining industry and at improvement of coal production technologies, which have been completed at the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, are presented. These projects cover automation, monitoring and visualization systems, systems for implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, and database recording systems. iRIS system for electronic marking, identification, and recording of components of powered roof supports, which was implemented in 31 Polish mining enterprises, is presented as an example of the work directly associated with an increase of operational safety. Specialists from KOMAG, ELSTA, Ltd., and Silesian University of Technology in Poland, have developed flexible, configurable, and scalable system for data management, which refers to all fixed assets of mining enterprises, meeting the requirements of users as regards marking and identification of fixed assets. The system for control of roadheaders using intelligent algorithms, based on artificial intelligence techniques is also the example of innovative actions. This system aims at increasing the safety and effectiveness of teamwork due to a possibility of remote, semiautonomous operation. Introduction of artificial intelligence technology enables adaptation of roadheader mining system to the present mining-and-geological conditions. Moreover, work aiming at implementation of state-of-the-art system for control of mine jig?s beneficiation node, integrating machines and equipment in one system, is carried out as regards automation, information integration, and visualization in coal beneficiation process. Work on recovery and conversion of thermal energy, which is a by-product during operation of machines and equipment, especially mine diesel drives, is presented. Systems for energy recuperation are more and more important due to the necessity of continuous increase of power production efficiency.

"RMR geomechanics classification is being used all over the World as a useful tool for tunnel predesign and construction. Bieniawski (1989) provided guidelines for tunnel excavation and support, according RMR numerical values; guidelines which are now included in almost all tunnelling books, regulations, and Internet portals. But in the last 25 years tunnelling techniques have changed and some of the guidelines have become obsolete.. The conditions of tunnels for the 1989 guidelines application were: horseshoe shape; 10 m width; vertical stress < 25MPa; construction by drilling and blasting. Actually a substantial number of tunnels are mechanically excavated. The tunnel themselves are now bigger: a span of 14 m. is very common for transportation tunnels. The guidelines included the following concepts: excavation method, rock bolts (20 mm diameter, fully grouted), shotcrete, steel sets. There is an increasing gap between the 1989 guidelines and the practice: in many tunnels different to-the-case excavation and support requirements are established. Bieniawski himself has published a paper (Lowson & Bieniawski, 2013) with different guidelines based in Lowson’s practice, with no explanations and/or justification.In this paper a new set of RMR tunnelling guidelines is proposed taking account of the actual industry conditions, and increased safety regulations. The 5 classes’ limit RMR:values (80,60,40,20) are no more useful actually: Values of RMR (70, 50, 30) are used in practice to define quite different tunnelling techniques. Consequently a 10 subclasses system is proposed. Each subclass covers a span of 10 RMR points. As the number of mechanically excavated tunnels has increased a new correction factor is necessary, according the excavation method.The proposed 2014 RMR guidelines are for tunnels 10 to 14 meters wide, the world practice for new roads/railways tunnels. Many tunnels for water/ services are smaller with smaller support needs. Wider than 16 m caverns are out of the RMR system.It is not possible, nor desirable, to propose only a value for support in each subclass. The new guidelines propose an interval of values for certain types of support. More pessimistic values must be chosen for wider tunnels, tunnels with lower RMR values in each class and cases when a higher safety factor is asked for. More optimist ones are chosen for narrower tunnels, and higher RMR values. Some alternatives are almost complementary, others are contradictory. Sometimes several different techniques are proposed Guidelines are not automatic options. Good engineering judgment must be used when choosing between the different alternatives. Guidelines are not mandatory suggestions."

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives (HydroStar® 4208, DXG®-F7, Cyquest® N-900) using a potentiostatic technique. The current-time data obtained at 0.16V vs. SHE was analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A m-2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current-time data from the electrolyte without organic additives indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional (2-D) growth under diffusion control. SEM images obtained confirmed progressive nucleation with 2-D growth. 20 mg/L Cl- and 2.5 mg/L organic additives did not change the nucleation and growth mechanism, however the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.INTRODUCTION Electrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high purity copper metal. It is approximated that 20% of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole, and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth, and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O&apos;Keefe, 1992). Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature, and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents (traditionally guar products) are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper dendrites, which leads to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth, and dense cathodes."

MOST of the bituminous and semibituminous coals of this country Will coke, and all of them yield, on carbonizing, more or less marketable gas and byproducts. We need, however, a finer distinction as between various grades of coking coals and between coals of different degrees of byproduct and gas-making possibilities. There is required by the consumer or the coal producer a dependable test to show whether a certain coal or mixture of coals will make coke of good commercial value for blast, furnace, foundry, water-gas, or domestic use; whether any difficulties in operation may arise from properties inherent in the coal; and whether gas and byproducts may be expected of good quality and in profitable quantity. For determining coke quality, the most dependable test is in actual run in an oven, but for byproducts a coal may better and more accurately be tested in the laboratory or in a miniature oven or retort. As to what are the most desirable qualities in blast-furnace coke, the furnace men themselves are not in complete agreement. Soiree desire a hard, well-burned, "hot" coke, and others get better results from a "greener," less hardened product that burns somewhat more readily in the furnace. But certain qualities of cell structure and porosity are commonly agreed upon as desirable. Information as to what kind of coke a certain coal may be made to yield is valuable in advance, whatever may be the consumer&apos;s ideas as to the particular kind most suitable to his needs. The question arises, Can we predict coking quality with any degree of satisfaction from a small-scale test? It used to be said that coals could not be tested satisfactorily on a laboratory scale either for the coke they would yield or-the byproducts. On account of the mystery with which the coking quality of -coal has been shrouded and the large determining influences that many believe are exerted by mass, pressure, and the passage of carbonaceous volatile matter through the coking material, it has seemed difficult to reproduce in the laboratory the exact conditions of commercial practice. We present the results of our field research on the variation of the density of the gassed explosives and their influence on the blasting results in the Peruvian mines: Yanacocha, Toquepala and Antamina. Currently, 90% of Peruvian mines uses gassed explosives, for their economic and technical benefits. But new practices and design criteria have had to be adopted, and the most important a careful control of the in-hole density, whose variation in the depth of the hole strongly affects the detonation process.

"Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. "Spark plasma sintering (SPS) process has been evaluated for producing the commercially pure (CP) Ti, TiAl and a TiAl-B4C composite. Comparisons were made between the materials in terms of the sintered density, resultant hardness and microstructures. In the present work, the titanium aluminide powders (Ti-48Al, producing a mixture of y-TiAl/a2-Ti3Al) were synthesised „in-house? using a simple reaction-sintering and mechanical attrition approach. This allowed various size distributions to be generated. The powders were then blended with a fine boron carbide (B4C) powder (up to 6 wt.%), and the resulting mixtures were consolidated using spark plasma sintering (SPS) under vacuum in graphite dies. An applied stress of 50 MPa was used for all SPS runs. The SPS parameters were varied in terms of the ultimate sintering temperature (up to 1300°C) and hold time (up to 10 minutes) for each material. It is demonstrated that high densities can be achieved this approach (exceeding 95% of theoretical, with optimised samples close to full density). Microstructural characterisation was conducted using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The B4C additions were seen to partially react with the TiAl to form reinforcements, such as TiCx and TiBx. Preliminary mechanical property assessment will also be briefly discussed.INTRODUCTION Titanium- and titanium aluminide-based alloys possess many unique properties, such as excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature strength, respectively (Cardarelli, 2001; Leyens & Peters, 2003). Compared to many other competing materials (e.g. stainless steel or Ni-based alloys), Ti- and TiAl-based alloys also have relatively low densities (~4.5 and ~3.9-4.1 g/cm3, respectively), which is critical for performance in aviation and automobile applications. However, the manufacturing cost is high, due to the expensive raw Ti material and difficulties in machining. TiAl-based alloys are particularly difficult to produce because of their limited ductility (Lütjering & Williams, 2007). To overcome those problems, powder metallurgy (PM) technologies have shown great potential as near-net shape processes for Ti- and TiAl-based alloys. The general PM process largely avoids laborious post-machining and minimises material use. In industrial production, the PM approach has been successfully utilised to manufacture aluminium- and iron-based alloys (Huo & Heath, 2008)."

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

An instrument that is sensitive , portable , safe , and low in cost was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting helium leaks by comparing the thermal conductivity and flow rate of the atmosphere around the suspected leak against a reference of helium- free air . A vacuum pump pulls the sample gas through a restriction and over thermistor elements , the combined electrical output of which is affected by thermal conductivity and flow rate of the sample gas . Tests showed that the battery - operated Helium Leak Detector was effective and rugged instrument that could be operated safely in explosive atmospheres . The instrument could also detect , but not identify , other gases such as methane , hydrogen , argon , carbon dioxide , and Freon 12 .

Of all the fossil fuels produced in the U. S., coal is by far the most abundant. U. S. reserves amount to an estimated 1.5 trillion tons, 2,500 times the 600 million tons produced in 1970. Although it would not be possible to recover all of this coal economically with current mining technology, a significant portion would be available given the proper circumstances. With existing technology, approximately one-eighth of these reserves is accessible, an amount which would last for several hundred years at the 1970 level of production. On the face of it, this substantial reserve should go a long way in meeting the Nation&apos;s energy needs. But coal offers special problems. As additional coal is mined and then burned, there are increased costs to the Nation&apos;s land, water, skies, and health. Hence, coal poses a dilemma because of its dual status as one of our most abundant domestic fuels and as one of our major sources of environmental degradation. Against the benefits that would be chalked up in the areas of national security, balance of trade, and economic well-being from the increased use of coal, we must enter on the debit side of the ledger the increased environmental cost. This paper reviews the use of U.S. fossil fuel, the drawbacks of coal as an energy source, the means being developed to overcome these drawbacks, and the background behind the present sulfur emission regulations relative to coal combustion. It also discusses in detail the Federal Environmental Protection Agency&apos;s (EPA&apos;s) current policies to ensure the continued use of coal as a major source of energy for fossil-fuel fired power plants.

Many technical processes also yield dusty residues which usually contain appreciable amounts of valuable matter. Often they also accumulate substances detrimental to the process. Dumping them entirely in landfills wastes raw material and causes high disposal costs, but recycling them without prior treatment is often not feasible. Physical separation processes are preferable because of their rather low energy demand. In order to develop such treatment systematically, the residues must be characterized properly. The technique for such a characterization is taken from mineral processing: perfect fractionation according to continuous properties of the particles supplemented with chemical analysis are used for plotting the Henry-Reinhardt chart. This represents the benchmark for assessing actual separation processes and tests. Their results are compared in terms of ?selectivity? and plotted in the kappa chart. In this paper, Henry-Reinhardt chart and kappa chart are applied to several different types of residues from iron and steel production and show their potential for being upgraded before reutilization in the production process. The quality of refractory bricks and castables could be determined by direct measurements of their material properties such as elastic properties, porosity, density, etc. using conventional static or non-destructive testing (NDT) dynamic techniques. Quality monitoring of refractory linings is much more challenging and complicated. The static methods require undesirable drilling and sample extractions from the furnace structure. A more desirable alternative is the use of NDT techniques for material quality estimation. The Acousto Ultrasonic-Echo (AU-E) technique is a new stress wave propagation approach for monitoring the quality of refractory linings in operating furnaces. In this paper, the conceptual methodology for the AU-E technique is described, the capabilities and limitations are expanded, and the results from two case studies are discussed.

"One of the major environmental impacts of mining is the destruction of habitat. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic Australian marsupial that has been severely affected by land clearing and its decline is continuing. This has placed pressure upon mining companies and government agencies to ensure koalas are managed throughout the life-of-mines - from land clearing through to rehabilitation of post-mining landscapes. This paper reports on the æKoala VentureÆ research partnership between The University of Queensland and Rio Tinto. As part of the Koala Venture program we examined koala use of two types of restored environments: rehabilitated mined land (20 sites) natural regrowth forests (six sites), at Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland, Australia. Searches for koala scats revealed evidence of koalas in ten per cent of rehabilitated sites (2/20) and 33 per cent of natural regrowth sites (2/6). Two factors were identified as being of greatest importance in facilitating koala recolonisation of restored habitats. Firstly, all recolonised sites were located close to native forest occupied by koalas (mean 135 m ¦ 52). Proximity to source animals is considered crucial to recolonisation of suitably restored habitats. Secondly, three of the four recolonised sites were dominated by koala food trees, most of which were large enough to be utilised by koalas. Availability of suitably abundant food resources is, therefore, also considered crucial. The requirement for these two factors, in combination, is highlighted by the absence of koalas at several sites that contained abundant food trees, but that were distal to areas with source animals, and vice-versa.Our research demonstrates the enormous potential for restoration of wildlife habitat on post-mining lands, even for species with specific requirements such as the koala. Gold is mobilized and precipitated in a wide variety of environments ranging from those of weathering and biological phenomena, to pluton emplacement to deep metamorph ism . But it appear that pervas ive leaching of large rock volumes fo llowed by the focussed di charge of typically low salin ity flu ids is frequently involved. There are great gaps in our knowledge, particula rly with re pect to gold in very high temperature fl uids generated at near Moho depths. But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . Other environment with great potential include those of major thru t fau lt and strike slip fa ult s where large quant ities of fluids are mobilized .

Radial gas holdup profiles have been measured in a 50x400 cm flotation column using a multi-cell conductivity probe. Three different bubble generation systems were examined: up to eight vertical filter cloth spargers, three horizontal filter cloth spargers, and three (horizontal) Cominco-type spargers. The variables tested were: number of spargers, symmetry of their arrangement, and height above spargers. Batch water with up to 20ppm frother concentration was used. The general observation is that the profiles tend to be uniform (i.e. flat) with some exhibiting a slight wavy shape. The vertical sparger arrangement proved the most difficult to achieve profile symmetry. The horizontal spargers gave uniform profiles at right angle to their length but a decreasing gas holdup along their length; the Cominco-type spargers gave slightly less scatter in the data. Switching off selected spargers (to simulate malfunction) did not produce strong asymmetry in the profiles.

"Based on contact-angle measurements and the work of adhesion equation, the hydrophobicity of a wide variety of coals was found to decrease with decreasing rank, fixed carbon and total carbon content and with increasing oxygen and hydroxyl content. The estimated hydrophobicity, based on the water-sessile-drop contact angle, is '\.. 20% for lignite, increases with increasing rank up to a maximum of 'V70% for low (LV) and medium (MV) volatile bituminous coals and then decreases somewhat for anthracite. Using the captive-bubble technique, the calculated hydrophobicity ranges from '\.. 0% (below HV A bituminous rank) to a maximum of 55% for L V-MV coal. The former estimation is believed to be the more accurate. While the water-sessile-drop contact angle as measured on a polished-coal surface is usually larger than that shown by the captive-bubble method, the two values were found to converge at""' 95% relative humidity. It is proposed that the surface of coal consists of three kinds of sites: strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The sessile-drop technique measures the total hydrophobic sites whereas the captive-bubble method measures only the more strongly hydrophobic sites. A water film covers the weakly hydrophobic sites preventing their detection by the captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a mixture of the degradation products of plants and of mineral matter. The appearance and properties of a specific coal is determined by the nature of the original vegetation and the extent of the physical and chemical changes which have occurred after deposition. The coalification process may be considered to have started with peat formation followed by a transition to lignite due to burial under sediments and metamorphic processes. Further metamorphic transformation to bituminous coals and, finally, under intense metamorphic action, to anthracite causes the carbon content and rank of the coal to increase. With such a wide variation in their genesis and composition, equally wide variations in the degree of hydrophobicity of different coals may be expected. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a means of estimating the hydrophobicity of a given coal sample based on rank parameters."

IT IS generally recognized that the natural gas absorbed in petroleum plays the leading r6le in moving the oil through the sands to the well and supplies the energy that delivers the oil to the surface when the wells are flowing. It is the purpose of this paper to note the amount of oil that could be lifted by this gas if 100 per cent. efficiency were obtained and the efficiencies actually obtained in the use of this gas. An article in MINING AND METALLURGY,&apos; stated that in a Wyoming field, with a pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in., there would be absorbed 65 cu. ft. of gas per barrel, or 1.55 cu. ft. per gal. of oil. The writer does not know if data have been obtained, by experiment, for pressures beyond those indicated in this article, therefore, for the purpose of illustration, he has projected this curve to obtain figures for pressures greater than 300 lb., although probably experiment will show that the extended line is not quite correct.
