Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . 1. The investigation shows that the Pewee, Big Mary, and Windrock are the most important beds in Anderson County. About 73 percent of the known recoverable reserves of coal in the county are in these beds, and from them comes 94 percent of the production. The remaining reserves tabulated in this report are in the Joyner, Jellico, Coal Creek, and Poplar Creek beds, and 6 percent of the county production comes from these beds. No production is being reported at present from the Jellico bed, although it was mined years ago. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, bared on a minimum thickness of 1/4 inches and on 1,800 short tons put acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 170 million torts as of January 1, 1953 Of this total, 155 million tons is in beds 2S inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to they total estimated reserves.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

Configuration of Rozelle Interchange Project’s ventilation system required design and construction of some of the largest and tallest underground civil caverns attempted in Australia. The paper focuses on the technical challenges of designing these caverns within a heterogeneous, generally weak sandstone under highstress conditions while providing a construction sequence that would align with the contractor’s preferred techniques and schedule. Various construction techniques were investigated, but ultimately an observational approach relying on a construction sequence and specialized instrumentation met both the designer’s and contractor’s requirements. Relevant data obtained from excavations and the construction monitoring program are presented within.

A strain of Pseudomonas stutzeri isohted from selenium contaminated surface waters, was found to be effective . in reducing selenate (Se04 2) stoichiometrically to selenite (Se03 2 '), which was further reduced to elementaJ selenium (Se0 ). The process parameters for effective utilization of nitric acid as an oxidant for copper-iron sulfides have been developed. Leaching variables found to be important were acid concentration, temperature, time, atmosphere, pressure, mineral type, particle size, and percent solids. Particular attention was devoted to analysis and control of fumes evolved during the oxidation. Responses recorded were metal extraction, elemental sulfur formation and oxidation, product gas composition and evolution rate, reagent consumption, and residue flotation response. The paper concludes by laboratory testing a flow sheet based on the above observations. Ninety-eight percent of the copper contained in a chalcopyrite-bornite concentrate was recovered, requiring 1. 6 pounds of nitric acid to be regenerated externally per pound of copper extracted. Iron remained in the leach residue as hydrogen jarosite and was ultimately rejected from the system by froth flotation. Sixty percent of the sulfur contained, in the heading concentrate reported in the elemental form; the remainder was oxidized to sulfate and eliminated with the hydrogen jarosite in the flotation tails or by neutralization of the solvent extraction raffinate with lime. Nitrogen was evolved primarily as NO and NO2; up to 3 percent N2O was also present. Gases containing sulfur were absent except when pyrrhotite was solubilized in the absence of soluble copper. In this case, H2S was evolved.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary tests of the Oyon coal constituted part of a wartime exploratory and development program in which many agencies participated. The general objective was to find new and adequate source of fuel and other raw materials for greatly expanded industry.The Oyon coal field, known for at least a hundred years to the mining people of Peru, offers a possible source of high-grade process fuel for the growing metallurgical industries of South America and the Pacific coast. Santolalla 4/ reports that low-volatile coal from this region was used in local smelting operations as early as 1850. It has been mined in very small quanti¬ties for many years and used in neighboring mining camps and villages. Small quantities are regularly used at Oroya for the manufacture of carbide, and in recent years small-scale coking operations in specially designed ovens in the region have demonstrated that these coals will make dense coke.During this long period of desultory operations many small openings have been made scattered over a wide area in this general region, indicating very extensive occurrence of the coal measures, although systematic exploration work has not been undertaken. However, current development work of the Banco Minero del Peru has opened up several substantially parallel highly inclined or vertical beds of workable thickness and has followed these deposits to sufficient lateral extent to prove fairly well the existence of substantial reserves on this property."

Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. Bench-scale studies were made on a reductive hydrometallurgical procedure to convert chalcopyrite flotation concentrate to copper metal or a readily leachable sulfide. Reductive conversion of chalcopyrite and dissolution of iron and sulfur were accomplished in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid solution by the addition of metallic copper, iron, or lead. Use of metallic copper as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 and 46 percent of the iron and sulfur, respectively. The products were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and a copper sulfide. Use of metallic iron or lead as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 percent of both the iron and sulfur. The products obtained with metallic iron or lead were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and metallic copper.

The effects of temperature, grain size, and magnesium content on the strength and ductility of cadmium were studied in the range -269° to 23 °C. A sharp drop in ductility between -140° and -190°C marked a transition in fracture mode from ductile shear to inter gvanular fracture. The addition of up to 15.35 wt pct Mg in solid solution raised the transition temperature, and for two compositions produced basal cleavages. The relatively high ductility of unalloyed cadmium at cryogenic temperatures is attributed to temperature independence of the yield stress and the absence of dislocation locking. ALTHOUGH numerous studies have been made of the mechanical properties of cadmium single crystals,1-5 no comprehensive investigation of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium has been carried out. This investigation was initiated to determine the mechanisms of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium, and to attempt to correlate these mechanisms with the behavior of other metals of hexagonal close-packed structure. A second objective of this work was to determine whether the slip systems and mode of fracture of polycrystalline cadmium could be altered by reduction of the axial ratio, which is 1.886, through alloying. Dorn and co-workers' have been able to induce prismatic slip in magnesium through alloying to reduce the axial ratio. Single crystals of cadmium are so highly ductile that glide strains of 400 pct are observed at room temperature, and 80 pct at -269°c.l Failure in every reported case is by necking down and shearing off of the crystal. Cleavage in cadmium single crystals has never been observed. Magnusson and aldwin reported a ductile to brittle transition for polycrystalline cadmium at about —160 C for specimens tested at a strain rate of 0.05 in. per in. per min in tension. However, even at -196° substantial ductility was retained. The transition temperature was strain rate dependent, impact loading at 19,000 in. per in. per min raising the transition temperature to about -85°C while leaving the low temperature ductility unchanged. No information was given on microstructures or fracture mode, nor were stress-strain characteristics reported. In the present investigation, tensile tests were carried out on polycrystalline cadmium and solid solution Cd-Mg alloys to determine flow stresses, work-hardening behavior, fracture strength, and fracture ductility. Variables employed included temperature, alloy content (and c/a ratio), and grain size.Some compression data also have been obtained for comparison purposes. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Polycrystalline Cadmium. Two purities of cadmium were employed in this investigation. Cadmium of 99.95 pct purity was supplied by Belmont Smelting and Refining Co. Cadmium of 99.99+ pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co. Threaded cylindrical tensile specimens were machined to give approximately a 1/2 in. long straight gage section with a reduced diameter of about 0.110 in. Specimens were heat treated in evacuated pyrex capsules in the range 140" to 290°C to produce desired grain sizes. All specimens were polished in a solution containing 320 g Cr03 and 20 g NaS04 in 1000 cc of H20. Occasionally this solution caused staining of the specimen, in which case a further polish with a solution of one part HN03 and two parts H202 in two parts ethyl alcohol was employed.' Tensile testing was carried out on a screw-driven Instron machine, at a constant rate of crosshead movement, which for most tests was 0.01 in. per in. per min. Load vs time, and therefore load vs total strain, were recorded. Temperatures from -196" to -40°C were obtained by passing nitrogen gas through a copper coil immersed in liquid nitrogen, and then feeding the gas into a jacket around the specimen. Tests at -269°C were carried out in a helium cryostat, at a crosshead rate of 0.1 in. per in. per min, with specimens of 1 in. gage length. Compression specimens were tested in a jig similar to one designed by ilman. The jig was mounted on the under side of the Instron crosshead. Load was transmitted by means of a rod connected to a movable part of the jig at one end, and the load cell at the other end. A downward movement of the crosshead applied a compressive load to the specimen.

Temperature dependence of the rate of recovery in zinc single crystals after a simple shear deformation at low temperature was investigated. Some tentative suggestions regarding the annealed and strain-hardened states of a crystal are discussed. RECOVERY may be defined as the gradual return of the mechanical and physical properties of strain-hardened metal to those characteristic of the annealed material; an increase in temperature increases the rate of recovery. The annealing process in strain-hardened polycrystalline metals is complicated by the inhomogeneity of strain which always exists in aggregates. Polygonization in bent regions of the crystals and growth of new almost strain-free grains starting at points of severe local distortion1-:' make it almost impossible to isolate and study the recovery process. Homogeneously strained single crystals, however, do not polygonize or re-crystallize and hence they can be used advantageously to study recovery. In such crystals strain hardening is completely removed by recovery alone. Since recovery is a process whereby certain lattice disturbances introduced by plastic flow are gradually reduced, a knowledge of the rate and temperature dependence of this process for various conditions of prestrain might be helpful in formulating a model of the strain-hardened state. For simplicity it seemed desirable to limit the type of prestrain to the simplest obtainable, i.e., simple shear strain. In the experiments to be described, recovery was studied by observing changes in the stress-strain curve of prestrained zinc single crystals held for various times at temperatures above that employed for straining. Single crystals were grown from the melt by a modified Bridgeman technique from Horse Head Special zinc 99.99 pct pure, and from spectrographically pure zinc 99.999 pct pure. They were grown as 1 in. diameter spheres and acid-machined' to the final specimen contour. The test section was a cylinder about 1/8 in. high and 3/4 in. in diameter. The conical sections adjacent to the test section were cemented into the grips so the load could be transmitted to the crystal as uniformly as possible. The specimens were oriented so that in testing the maximum shear stress was applied along one of the slip directions, [2110], in the (0001) plane. Details of the production and testing of such specimens have been presented.' Each test was carried out according to the following schedule: 1—The crystal was strained at — 50°C until it reached a maximum shear stress, ,,,. The strain rate was approximately 5 pct per min in all cases. 2—After straining, the crystal was unloaded before the temperature was changed. Unloading required about 3 min. 3—The temperature of the specimen was then increased from — 50°C to the temperature, T, of recovery. This change in temperature was completed in a time of less than 2 min. The specimen remained at temperature, T, for a time, t, which differed for the various specimens. 4—Thereafter the temperature was again reduced to — 50 °C in approximately 3 min. 5—While at —50°C, the stress-strain curve after recovery was obtained. 6—The specimen was then unloaded and annealed for 1 hr at 375 °C in a helium atmosphere to bring about complete recovery. Cooling to room temperature after anneal required 90 min. 7—The same crystal could be re-used for another test because the plastic properties after annealing closely duplicated those of the original crystal. The specimen was immersed during the test in a bath of methyl alcohol which, through a system of tubes, could be pumped through either of two heat exchangers to regulate the temperature; this was accomplished by circulating the liquid through coils immersed in a bath of acetone and dry ice for cooling or in a bath of warm water for heating. Test temperatures were thus maintained constant within ±1°C. The — 50°C temperature was low enough so that no measurable recovery occurred during unloading and reloading. The stress-strain curve continued after recovery along a path below, but approximately parallel to, the path of a curve obtained in an uninterrupted test. A metallographic study of solute segregation produced during controlled solidification of Sn-Pb alloys has previously been reported.' It was found that the growth conditions which produced well-developed cellular substructures led to severe segregation, and even at solute concentrations of 0.2 wt pct Pb regions of a lead-rich phase were formed at the junctions of cell boundaries (nodes). Similar sample preparation and etching techniques have now been applied to several tin alloys at more dilute concentrations. The crystals were solidified uni-directionally under less-severe growth conditions so that the predominant interface structure was composed of two-dimensional cells.* Binary alloys with lead, using 9.999 pct Sn as a solvent, and ternary alloys with lead and bismuth or lead and antimony, using zone-refined tin as a solvent, were examined. The liquid was decanted from the growing crystals in all cases to reveal the interface structure and ensure that two-dimensional cells were being formed. However, since interference may arise from a liquid layer that clings to the interface during decanting,3 an examination of the segregation pattern was always made behind the interface. In all cases, the structure within the bulk of a crystal at greater than 1 cm behind the decanted interface was substantially the same as that nearer the interface. Representative photomicrographs of the dilute Sn-Pb alloy are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Most observations are similar to those of the previous investigation. For example, the solute concentration at the cell walls is higher than in the intercellular regions; where cell boundaries meet, the segregation is enhanced; the macromosaic or stria-tion substructure and grain boundaries show enhanced segregation; there is also a depletion of solute at cell walls near a striation boundary, as Spittle et a1.4 have observed at decanted interfaces. Over 425 million used automotive oil filters are discarded in the United States each year. Estimates prior to this research claim that 10% are recycled with the remainder typically being landfillcd. Surveys conducted with ferrous scrap users and oil filter processors as part of this research reveal that at least 15% are currently being recycled as ferrous scrap. Oil filter scrap is not being used by many operations because of concerns with scrap consistency and quality. These concerns stem from trials conducted in the infancy of the oil filter recycling movement. Consistent scrap quality depends both on the content of the used oil filters and the processing technique used to produce the scrap. Technology has advanced since the first recycling trials were conducted by steelmakers. Several different types of scrap are available, including pucks, bricks, cubes, and shred. This research conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla investigated the content of used oil filters and compares the recyclability of different oil filter sizes and designs. Filters vary by application and vary between manufacturers for a particular application. An understanding of the scrap itself as well as the concerns and problems of both oil filter recyclers and oil filter processors is necessary to increase the number of used oil filters being recycled.

A study has been conducted to assess a new wet beneficiation treatment for the recovery of the sulphuric-acid-soluble titanium oxide contained in the waste from an Italian TiO2-pigment facility. The waste is produced during treatment of a Ti-enriched slag and contains as main components TiO2 (54%, of which 42% acid-soluble and 12% insoluble), SiO2 (27%) and A1203 (6%). Eighty percent of the material is finer than 50pm. The first step was to ascertain the possibilities offered by size classification, wet gravity separation, froth flotation and wet high-intensity magnetic separation to improve the grade and recovery of Ti02 and reduce the SiO2 content. The next step was to optimize the operating conditions of the various separations and assemble them into a complete flow- sheet. Beneficiation ensures potentially 70% recovery of the TiO2 with a concentrate grade of 80%.

The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. SELECTION OF A PROBABILISTIC APPROACH AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE It Is essential to differentiate probabilistic sampling from non-probabilistic sampling. As Illustrated in Figure 1, the sampling operation Is a selection process which could be performed In two different ways: I. A probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with a same probability of being selected. 2. A non-probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with different probabilities of being selected.

Prior to mining, all rocks contained in a mineral deposit must be placed in one of several categories known as ore types. Each ore type describes a different way that the rock will behave in processing. The ore type determines which process stream a particular mined unit will be sent to, sets expectations for process engineers and metallurgists, and forms the basis for recovery predictions and production estimates. At first, ore types are assigned mainly by geologists based on visible geological criteria (dominant ore mineralogy, estimated grade, rock type, alteration type). As metallurgical tests are carried out and process data accumulate, the resulting criteria may be factored into the ore typing process, typically as assays and recoverable metal using the relevant process(es). Other variables may also be incorporated into ore typing at operations if they are particularly important, such as grindability, preg-robbing, gangue reagent consumption, and the presence of especially deleterious minerals such as talc or smectite. The mine operation department may also redefine ore types and/or process destinations based on economic criteria. A “best” ore type is designated that (in theory) best describes how the rock will behave in processing. Codes representing this ore type are entered into the drill hole database, then interpreted on cross sections and level plans, and finally added to the block model. Ore types are iteratively reexamined and adjusted over the life of a project. Major difficulties in effective ore typing are (1) lack of communication between geologists and metallurgists, (2) the imprecision inherent in imposing clean categories on messy natural systems without discrete divisions, (3) the need for ore types to provide useful information for a wide range of processes, (4) difficulties in scaling up laboratory test results to mine production, and (5) conflict among geological, metallurgical, and economic criteria for ore typing.
