"A cooperative research work on the silver recycling process is underway between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Tokai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly from photograph industries where the concentration of minor element is steadily increasing in the recent years. The waste materials are concentrated and the impurities are removed by evaporation and slagging. In this paper, the industrial practice of wastes treatment is introduced and the result of the laboratory studies on the removal of antimony and tin from the binary and ternary alloys will be discussed. Characteristics in the behavior of antimony and tin during the process are also discussed with the observation of practical operation.1. IntroductionPrecious metals such as gold and silver primarily come from mining practice and the byproduct in copper smelting. However, the recycled amount of these precious metals have been increased 1 along with the environmental restriction and the widely accepted idea of saving resources on the earth in the recent years.· Though the recycle process of precious metals are comparatively simple from other metals refining, the process has been getting more complicated as wastes treatment has to deal with more impurity elements which are intentionally added to the products. Among these additives, antimony is used in the film materials in the photography industries to suppress its inflammability. Tin is another concern ,that is also coming from photography wastes; These minor elements have become problematic during the recycle.The removal of these minor elements has been in operation at Matsuda through a traditional oxidation refinement process using a reverberatory furnace. However, the complexity of the charge makes the recycle process more tedious and troublesome. In order to investigate the minor element behavior in the complicated materials system during the silver recycling processes, a cooperative research work is undertaken between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Takai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly discharged from photograph industries where the minor element contents such as antimony, tin and bismuth in those wastes are steadily increasing in the recent years. The liquid wastes containing silver are concentrated and then treated pyrometallurgically with solid wastes from other sources, where the impurities are removed ·by evaporation and slagging. The purpose of this study is to investigate detailed behavior of impurity elements in the silver. containing systems."

The objective of this paper is to present the potential applications of geostatistical analyses in planning CPTu investigations, as well as interpolation of CPTu data. The paper presents a case study of a geostatistical analysis of CPTu data undertaken between 2004 and 2017 for an upstreamraised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. An initial model is developed using the 2004, 2009 and 2017 CPTu data. The model is used to predict in situ cone tip resistance (qc) measurements, as the interested primary variable, at the selected locations where 2019 CPTu were undertaken, and the results of the prediction and the actual data are compared.

In support of research on forming ceramics from mining and processing wastes, the Bureau of Mines tested various commercial refractories to evaluate their resistance to melts of these wastes. Sixteen refractories of various types were exposed in slag erosion tests to two siliceous waste melts with Si02/CaO ratios of 4.0 and 2.2, The extent and nature of slag attack were then determined for each refractory. The nature of slag attack was investigated through scanning electron micrographs and microprobe elemental distributions. The refractories that performed best in resisting attack by the melts were high-alumina types, and of the refractories tested, the most resistant was a 90-pct-Al203, 10-pct-Cr203 refractory.

The air recovery from a flotation cell is the fraction of inlet air which overflows the weir as un-broken bubbles. The air recovery is an important factor in froth phase phenomena; such as gangue entrainment and froth recovery. Increasing the air recovery, results in a higher recovery of attached mineral particles. Air recovery can be measured experimentally on plant using image processing of the top surface of an overflowing froth. The air recovery is directly linked to froth stability and the bursting rate of the bubbles at the froth surface, making it very difficult to predict. Experimental results show a very strong correlation between the superficial velocity of the inlet air and the superficial velocity of the air leaving the cell through the froth surface due to bursting, calculated from the experimentally measured air recovery. This correlation holds over multiple banks from different plants. Development of a power law equation around the inlet air velocity and the bubble solids loading on the froth surface allows the superficial air velocity through the top surface of the froth to be predicted, and from this the air recovery. This model is valid for use when operating beyond the peak in air recovery.

The recent establishment of an official price of 64.64 cents per ounce for silver by the President's order of December 21, 1933, has provoked discussion as to the effects of this move on the various metal-mining industries. To assist those of the mineral industry who are interested in this problem, the Bureau of Mines presents the following analysis of basic statistical data concerning; the relation of the silver price to the value of copper ores mined in the United States. The term "copper ore" as used herein includes all ores in which copper is the most abundant base metal paid for. In 1928, this class of ore contributed 98 percent of the total copper output of the United States.

THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, so that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay-available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location.

In 2018, Danieli has put into operation a complete cold processing complex in Turkey, which includes a new continuous pickling tandem mill featuring latest generation of market oriented technologies. In the thermal treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts, zinc is reduced, volatilized, and ultimately recovered either as liquid metal in a splash condenser or as solid zinc oxide in bag filters. During the process, the duet's chlorine and fluorine content also enters the gas phase and condenses as dross in the splash condenser or as salts which contaminate the zinc oxide product. Pretreatment of EAF dust by pyrohydrolysis appeared to offer a means of minimizing the duet's halogen content. The primary research objectives were to experimentally verify the technical viability of pyrohydrolysis and delineate the process parameters requisite for efficient halogen removal. To this end, representative EAF duet samples were secured and characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Mössbauer analyses. Specific- experimentation focused on the response of halogen extraction to variations in temperature, retention time, water vapor partial pressure, and various additives. The experimental results proved that 97 to 99 percent chlorine extraction and 80 to 85 percent fluorine extraction are consistently achieved when EAF dusts are blended with silica and roasted at temperatures of 850°C or greater in a furnace atmosphere of 75% steam (diluted by air). A statistical analysis further established that more than- a single optimal point exists, thus affording flexibility in parameter selection (e.g., by increasing temperature, the necessary retention time and additive concentrations are decreased). The findings substantiate the feasibility of pyrohydrolysis roasting in reducing the chlorine and fluorine in the EAF dust to a level that will obviate industrial concerns about halogen contamination. The end-product of the pyrohydrolysis procedure is a de-halogenated, self-fluxing calcine which can be directly charged to a plasma or flame reactor. The paper includes design parameters and flow diagrams illustrating the pyrohydrolysis process integrated with the plasma and flame reactor technologies.

More complex and heavy-concentrating oxidized and mixed sulphidic oxidized ores are involved in production because of increasing needs for non-ferrous metals. Extraction of the oxidized minerals of non-ferrous metals general in current technologies. The problem is solved to oxidized polymetallic ores the preliminary selective sulphidization is the oxidized surface of the components by means of hydrogen sulphide, sulphide and calcium polysulphide, and also element sulphur, etc. The task was to study details of flotation of the oxidized lead-bearing ore of the Zarechnoe deposit (Kazakhstan) with calcium polysulphide as sulphidation. According to chemical analysis initial samples of the ore contain, %: lead – 4.8; zinc – 0.1; general iron – 0.81. Phase structure lead is characterized by the oxidized form of 57.76-64.5 %; by sulphidic status of 25.5-32.64 %, and by plyumboyarosite of 19.0-23.02 %. Researches on flotation beneficiation of oxidized lead-bearing ore are conducted. Sulfidizator gave to grinding, on flotations there were used the collector (butyl xanthogenate of sodium) and frother (T-80). Experiments were conducted with a new sulphidizator – calcium polysulphide. The latter is obtained by interaction of CaO calcium oxide with sulfur and water at high temperature with component mass the following ratio S:CaO:H2O =10:5:85. Extent of mill initial ore was optimised (88.42 % of - 0.071 mm grade). For the optimum mill mode the studies on matching of an optimized consumption of sulphidizators are performed. On basic technology with application of sulphide of sodium as a sulphidizator at optimum mill, the lead concentrate with the content of lead 64.4 % at extraction of 86.6 % was received. The content of cerussite in a concentrate was about 14.9 % at extraction of 82.1 %. With application of calcium polysulphide as a sulphidizator the lead concentrate with the content of lead 68.0 % at extraction of 88.0 % was received. The content of cerussite has made 16.0 % at extraction of 85.0 %. Application of a new sulphidizator allows to increase extraction of lead in a concentrate from 64.4% to 68% and cerussite extraction – from 82.1 % to 85.0 %. The possibility of application of calcium polysulphide as a sulphidizator instead of conventional sulphurous sodium was established.

A high explosives shock tube has been constructed and developed to test blast resistant windows with pressure versus time waveforms similar to waveforms generated by arena testing. Calibration of the high explosives shock tube, or Large Arena Test Simulator (LATS), included numerous tests performed by detonating varying charge weights at different distances from three piezoelectric pressure sensors located at one end of the shock tube (where the test subject would be installed). The maximum reflected pressure and positive phase impulse were calculated for each waveform generated in the tests. Pressure versus distance and impulse versus distance graphs were generated. Results have been graphed in order to predict charge weights and distances that correlate to the desired pressure and impulse at the end of the tube for future tests. This is a valuable tool when testing expensive, job specific components so the loading requirements are met on the first attempt.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. "Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The remote location makes the mine accessible only by air or seasonally by ocean-going barges. Longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall coal mine ventilation system. Increased production rates due to higher-capacity mining equipment tend to also increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation. Increases in panel length, with some mines exceeding 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices at a study site, a face monitoring study with continuous monitoring of methane concentrations and automated recording of longwall shearer activity was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a U.S. longwall mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam and using a U-type, bleederless ventilation system. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the longwall face. These boreholes had some unusual design concepts, including a system of manifolds to modify borehole vacuum and flow and completion depths close to the horizon of the mined coalbed that enabled direct communication with the mine atmosphere. The mine operator also had the capacity to inject nitrogen into the longwall gob, which occurred during the monitoring study. The results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Average face air velocities were 3.03 m/s (596 fpm) at shield 57 and 2.20 m/s (433 fpm) at shield 165. The time required for the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) peak to occur at each monitoring location has been interpreted as being representative of the movement of the tracer slug. The rate of movement of the slug was much slower in reaching the first monitoring location at shield 57 compared with the other face locations. This lower rate of movement, compared with the main face ventilation, is thought to be the product of a flow path within and behind the shields that is moving in the general direction of the headgate to the tailgate. Barometric pressure variations were pronounced over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis.

The presence of arsenic, even at trace levels, in copper processing leads to the risk of arsine gas where reducing conditions exist that can reduce any soluble arsenic present to its minus 3 valance state and generate hydrogen gas from the solutions. This risk is understood to be significant within the industry, particularly in the case of liberator cells where copper concentrations in solution are drawn down to remove the copper and impurities from the bleed stream. However, there are numerous other potential areas where the arsine gas risk exists including contact between active metal such as iron, zinc or aluminum and arsenic bearing solutions in pyrometallurgical dust treatment, refining and acid plant operations. In turn this breaks down to different mitigating strategies dependent on the risk scenarios considered; for example, how this risk interacts with Change Management, Confined Space Entry or Contractor Training. The ISO 45001 is an emerging standard meant to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create safer working conditions all over the world. The paper shows a case study of how a framework consistent with the tenets of ISO 45001 has been used to provide a consistent assessment of this risk for a wide variety of copper operations and the expectations of how this may be used to effectively improve the effectiveness of barriers against future incidents. INTRODUCTION Arsine gas (AsH3), first identified in 1775, is a highly poisonous, colorless, non-irritating gas with a mild garlic odor that is heavier than air. Arsine gas is generated when reducing conditions are generated in the presence of hydrogen ions and arsenic compounds. Present permissible occupational exposure limit as defined by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as an 8-hour time-weighted average is ppm (0.2 mg/m3). Further increasing the risk, conventional respiratory protection utilizing half or full masks with gas filtering cartridges provide minimal protection against arsine. In copper processing plants, the risk of arsine generation is well understood in liberator cells, which are part of the electrolysis process. In this process, solutions containing copper are reduced in copper concentration removing not only the copper, but also arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The residual solution can be bled to control impurity build-up in the refinery. In this process, if the copper concentration is reduced to the point where As3- can form, arsine gas is generated via reaction with hydrogen ions generated during the plating process. The copper concentration at which arsine gas is generated depends on copper concentration at the cathode surface, the temperature and the acidity. As a result, there is always a risk of arsine gas generation in the liberator cell. Process measures to minimize or mitigate arsine evolution are tight control on final copper concentration, warm temperatures, fresh feed distribution and internal acid recirculation rates. Operator exposure protection measures are hooding, ventilation, arsine detection systems, restricted personnel access, automated shutdown controls and pre-defined evacuation plans.

Boliden Harjavalta Oy operates a copper smelter in Finland, which is based on flash smelting together with Peirce-Smith converting of copper matte. This paper reviews a case study when a high arsenic feed mixture was successfully eliminated in order to guarantee the anode quality. Based on theoretical and practical knowledge in slag chemistry at Outokumpu Research, the CaO-fluxing practice was introduced. Description of a thermodynamic simulation using MTDATA and implementation of the results into converting practice is given. Results showed that the impurity fluctuations in raw materials could be effectively controlled by efficient utilization of different slag chemistry.

Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company's search varies over the years as the company's profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone's exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel producers in the United States and publishes economic data on these industries, based upon reports submitted voluntarily by producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1960 and presents data on individual plants. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed minerals fuels. A few small plants may not have been canvassed or failed to respond to the survey because some of the smaller plants operate intermittently and the survey is voluntary. All plants that reported commercial production were included; regardless of size. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, produced by mixing fine-sized mineral fuels with binding materials and compressing into small individual shapes, Briquets are produced in pillow-shaped and cylindrical form, are 2 to 4 inches long, and weigh 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- or 4-inch cubes; 6 or 8 of which are wrapped together in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds, Briquets are durable and may be stored and handled as bulk fuel; packaged fuel breaks easily and must be stored indoors to prevent it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times to supplement other fuels. Packaged fuel is burned without re-moving the paper and is referred to as the "white glove" fuel.

"Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."

"Recent efforts at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has led to the successful development of atmospheric and marine corrosion resistant high tensile Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars with minimum specified yield strength of 50 kg.mm-2. These rebars are increasingly being used for a wide range of end-applications, namely, concrete reinforcement structures, bridges, flyovers, dams etc. Welding is an important processing tool for each of the above applications. In view of the importance of welding, a comprehensive evaluation of the weldability properties has been carried for the two grades of steels using Submerged Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process; the most popularly used technique of welding of reinforcement bars (re bars).Implant tests were conducted to assess the cold cracking susceptibility of the steels. The static fatigue limit (SFL) value, determined for the atmospheric corrosion resistant (Cu-TMT) rebars under no preheat and no rebalcing conditions was found to be 63.8 kg mm-2, which was significantly higher than the Minimum Specified Yield Strength (MSYS) (50 kg.mm-2). This indicates adequate resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). On the other hand, the SFL value obtained for the marine corrosion resistant rebars (Cu-Cr TMT) under no preheat, no rebaking conditions was found to be inconsistent. Repeat of the test with fully rebaked electrodes (350°C-2h) resulted in a high SFL value (60.3 kg mm-2)_The rigidity of the structure or restraint influences the susceptibility of the weld joint to cracking. The cracking tendency increases with restraint intensity (K) of an assembly. The critical restraint intensities determined for the two steels were found to be· in excess of 1680 kg/mm.mm, indicating good welding behaviour with the following welding conditions : for Cu-TMT rebars with no preheat and no rebaking and for Cu-Cr TMT rebars with no preheat and fully baked electrodes; that is under low hydrogen levels."
