The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

Introduction The importance of the preservative treatment of mine timbers need scarcely be stressed here. Increasing the life of mine timbers will reduce one of the major costs of mining and also conserve the available timber supply which lies within easy access of the mines. When treated, several species of timber may be used which otherwise could not be considered, owing to their short life. Another feature which should appeal to the mining industry is that wood preservatives are a mine product, and the benefit to be derived from the increased consumption of wood preservatives due to the example set by mine owners is not inconsiderable. Mine timbers may be divided into three classes when considering preservative treatments. (1) Timber obviously not profitable to treat owing to long natural life or short period of time in service. (2) Timber that obviously should receive protection from decay. (3) Timber installed in locations where the length of service required will depend on future developments, so that preservative treatments might or might not prove to be a profitable investment.

The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist. [When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. When burdens were poorly prepared the first factor was by far the most important and a study of the reducibility of individual lumps was of rather academic interest recent years good burden preparation with emphasis on sized material has led to greatly improved gas distribution in the stack, and thus the second factor has become much more important and there has been a marked increase in interest in methods of measuring reducibility.]

THE separation of minerals by flotation can be regarded as a rate process, with the extraction of any one mineral determined by its flotation rate, and the grade of concentrate by the relative rates for all the minerals. So regarded, the significant variables for the process are those that control the rates. These variables are of two types, the first describing the ore and its physical and chemical treatment prior to flotation and the second characterizing the separation process in the cells. This paper will examine the variation in rates for a group of separations, will show that a simple rate law appears to govern, and will consider the relation of the control variables to the rates. The use of rate constants for evaluation of performance and efficiency will be discussed. Flotation involves the selective levitation of mineral and its transfer from cell to launder. The flotation rate is the rate of this transfer. It may be defined by the slope of a recovery-time curve for any cell in a bank, or at any time in batch operation. The objective in flotation rate study is an equation expressing the rate in terms of some measurable property of the pulp. This can be either the concentration of floatable mineral in weight per unit volume1,2 or a relative concentration, which will be a function of the recovery." A rate equation for an actual flotation pulp will contain at least two constants, both to be determined from the data. One of these, the initial concentration or proportion of floatable mineral, is not necessarily equal to the feed assay because of nonfloatable oversize or locked particles." The other, a rate constant, is a measure of proportionality between the rate and the pulp property on which the rate depends. The value of the rate constant will be determined by the values of all variables which control the process and will be changed by significant changes in any of them. It is, therefore, a direct measure of performance. Where recovery or grade change continuously with flotation time, the rate constant will be independent of time and will characterize the entire course of the separation. Development of Rate Equations Rate equations can be developed either by analysis of the mechanism of the process or by direct fitting of equations to recovery-time data. Sutherland's attempt by the first method' suggests that the effect of particle size variation on the rate complicates the derivation of a simple equation applicable to an ore pulp. A further problem with an ore is the concentrate grade requirement, which usually involves a variable rate of froth removal. Thus the final rate for any cell may depend on the froth character and froth height, as well as on the pulp composition. This does not imply that each cell cannot reach a steady state2 in which the rate will depend ultimately on pulp composition. The second method is the fitting of rate equations consistent with the necessary boundary conditions* to experimental recovery-time curves. On the assumption that under constant operating conditions the flotation rate is proportional to the actual or relative concentration of floatable mineral in the pulp, a generalized rate equation may be expressed as follows: Rate = Kcn [I] where K is the rate constant, c is some measure of the quantity of floatable mineral in the pulp at time t, and n is a positive number. In previous rate studies, the value of n has been taken as 1, either by direct assumption," or as a result of the hypothesis that bubble-particle collision is rate determining.' A first order equation results, which after integration in terms of cumulative recovery R, leads to Loge A/A-R = Kt [2] The quantity A is the maximum possible recovery with prolonged time under the conditions used. No conclusive proof for the validity of this equation in flotation has been advanced. The evidence cited in its support consists entirely in the demonstration that it appears to apply to a limited number of recovery-time curves."' It will be shown subsequently that this procedure is not sufficient to establish the order of a flotation rate equation. The possibility that the equation may be of higher order therefore requires examination. If, in particular, the exponent in eq 1 is assumed to be 2, then after integration there results R = A2Kt/1 + AKt [3] with K again a rate constant and A the maximum proportion of recoverable mineral. There are several underlying themes: Readily available computing power makes possible instrument like SPLIT, JKFrothCam and the JK/FEI Mineral Liberation Analyser, a large research project is underway applying acoustic monitoring techniques to large mills with the object being to more accurately monitor total mill load and ball load on-line. Taking advantage of these opportunities will require detailed ore characterization, good models and accurate measurement of mine and plant performance.

Understanding the contribution of geophysical variables is vital for identifying ore indicator regions. Both magnetometry and gamma-rays are used to identify the geophysical signatures of the rocks. Density is another key variable for tonnage estimation in mining, and needs to be re-estimated in areas of change when a boundary update has been conducted. Modelling these geophysical variables in 3D will enable investigation of the properties of the rocks and improve our understanding of the ore. The Gaussian Process (GP) was previously used to generate 3D spatial models for grade estimation using geochemical assays. This study investigates the influence of the following two factors on the GP-based autonomously generated 3D geophysical models: the resolution of the input data, and the number of nearest samples used in the training process. A case study conducted on a typical Hammersley Ranges iron ore deposit using geophysical logs, including density, collected from the exploration holes, is examined in this paper.

Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

Coal is America's most abundant energy resource. Therefore, it IS logical to assume that coal must be produced in much greater quantifies in order to make the United States self-sufficient, as far as energy is concerned by 1985. However, there are a number of obstacles which have to be overcome in order to achieve such a great task. According to one of the most outspoken American Mining men, there are three major obstacles. Those are: (1 ) Mining technology (2) Public image of the coal mining industry (3) Governmental policy toward the mining industry The following will be dealing with Shortwall Mining, which is a very specific part of mining technology and which might influence the image of the coal mining industry as well as the governmental guidelines, at least to make it easier to live with those guidelines. During recent years the operation of coal mines has been more expensive than ever. Since 1970, the cost of producing coal increased by 30% and the productivity dropped by just about the same amount. Those are alarming signs.

LOCATION OF PROPERTY THE property of Caribou Gold Mines, Limited, is situated in the north-eastern part of Halifax county, seven miles south of the Canadian National railway line at Upper Musquodoboit. Approach to the village is by a secondary road, improved recently by waste rock from the mine dump. A two-wire telephone line, seven miles long, built and owned by the present operators, provides communication to the nearest telephone exchange, Parker's Corner. HISTORY In 1870, the Caribou area was recognized as a proclaimed gold district. From then on, operations were intermittent, with periods of considerable activity by small companies until there were no fewer than seven mines in a district two miles long by three-quarters of a mile wide. These were the Holman, Truro, Caffrey, MacDonald or Elk, Lake, Dixon, and Hilchey properties, all of which have had separate stamp-mills, and have produced gold for varying periods. Depths of the workings range from 100 feet to 1,000 feet. Power was generated at each property by means of steam boilers. At the present time, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, controls all the leased areas, approximately 800 acres, and is operating by means of one central vertical shaft. GEOLOGY The district in and about Caribou Mines has an elevation of approximately five hundred feet above sea level. The area is fairly well wooded, with rock outcrops here and there. These outcrops, along with information from test-pits and shafts, have been the basis for the very excellent geological map of the district prepared by E. R. Faribault some years ago. The rock structure, which is one of the best examples in Nova Scotia of an elliptical dome, has its anticlinal axis in a northeast-southwest direction, and flat plunges in the same directions.

Correlations for the critical velocity needed to hydraulically convey particles in horizontal, or near-horizontal, pipes are either explicitly dependent upon the shear stress imparted by the fluid upon the surface of the particle bed, or require a velocity and hydraulic diameter. Often such approaches are modified to account for pipe inclination by the introduction of simple factors. However, we assert that the physics that underpins the hydraulic conveying of particles in steep pipes (such as a directionally drilled oil well) is dissimilar to that which governs particle behaviour in horizontal pipes. In steeply inclined systems, a sliding sediment induces an upward counter flow and hence an autogenous contribution to the shear rate. The physics underpinning particle hydraulic conveying in steep systems is explored using the separation results of Laskovski et al.10

The Sarcheshmeh new concentration plant uses a 32 ft×16 ft constant speed (10.5 RPM) SAG mill with two 5500 hp motors which could rotate in two directions. The mill liners are chrome-molybdenum steel casting type with a Brinnell hardness between 325 and 375 with the lifter face angle of 14° and lifter height of 152 mm. The shell liner consists of 120 (two 60 rows) pieces with a High-High configuration in a rail design. A specially designed liner wear profile measuring device enabled fast and accurate measurements inside the mill during the mill shut-down periods. The measurements indicated that the liner wear profile along the liner length is non-uniform and the highest wear occurs between 1.25m and 2.75m of the mill length. The average weight of liners at the time of removal was 47% of the original weight indicating a significant metal loss. The modification of liner shape was undertaken with the aim of having a uniform profile at the liner removal time. The proposed liner unlike the pervious type did not have a uniform shape with a lifter height of 187mm at the section where the wear rate was high. It was believed that this new profile could arrive at a uniform profile at the liner change out time. A study was also directed to the possible change of charge motion due to the liner profile modification. The dynamic behaviour of charge was investigated through the analysis of forces acting on a single ball using mill characteristics such as mill diameter, rotational speed, lifter height and release angle. The simulation of charge motion with this method and Milltraj TM software indicated that the impact position of charge will change only one degree due to the maximum increase of 35 mm in the lifter height. This assured that the installation of the modified liner would not have any adverse effect on the mill because of ball impacting the mill shell. It was predicated that the amount of scrap metal will reduce to 30% from the current value of 47% beside 1500 h increase in the liner life time.

"Abstract - Large differences in gold content between rock fragments or small volumes of unbroken rock, commonly referred to as the nugget effect, are related to sample and subsample weights, crushing and pulverizing sizes, and density, shape and size distribution of gold grains. Gy’s sampling theory, which relates gold grain characteristics to sample weight, fragment size, and error, provides a method of estimating a sampling constant that quantifies deposit characteristics that contribute to the nugget effect.Sampling control tests provide methods for determining the sampling constant. Sampling control charts, comprising nomographs that relate sample weight, error and particle size, use the sampling constant to optimize sample weights and comminution sizes, and to minimize the variability introduced by incorrect or inadequate sampling and sub-sampling procedures. The sampling constant is useful in classifying ores into arbitrary categories according to expected sampling difficulties. Spatial variations in the sampling constant can be used to aid in defining ore types for modeling geological domains, which should have unique sampling protocols. Examples that illustrate the relationship between the sampling constant and expected sampling problems, and the spatial variation of the sampling constant, are given for various deposits. Case histories of sampling programs are presented.Quality control procedures consist of monitoring sample contamination amd accuracy and precision of analytical results. Accuracy, precision and contamination are monitored by including standards, duplicates and blanks into batches of samples being analyzed. Analytical results of standards and blanks are plotted on a batch-and-time basis with control lines at plus or minus two/three standard deviations as confidence limits of the accepted round-robin value. Examples are given that illustrate a laboratory system in statistical control and the various types of problems encountered when interpreting quality control data. These include sample transcription errors, degradation, contamination, sampling errors, detection limit problems, instrumental drift, lack of statistical control, laboratory bias, procedural problems and data tampering.Where bias is negligible, precision, as a function of concentration, can be obtained from duplicates using the Thompson-Howarth precision algorithm, which also allows calculation of the practical detection limit. Examples are given that illustrate variations in precision, with grain size, for different types of duplicates, as well as mineralogical changes and sampling errors."

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the investigations of strategic mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled numerous deposits pf fluoride ores in the Western States. Sample from those deposits that warranted further investigation were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory studios of fluorite ores submitted from 12 deposits in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyomong. Only four of the Ores were found to be amenable to beneficiation for the production of acid-grade fluorspar concentrates with good recoveries. However, all of the samples were amenable to the production of concentrates meeting chemical specifications for metallurgical-grade spar.For the sake of clarity and convenience in presenting data, this report has been divided into six parts, each pertaining to metallurgical studies of fluorspar ores of a single State."

In the present study, waste materials like pine sawdust and spent grains were investigated to assess their potential for removal of cobalt ion from water by the process of biosorption. The effects of solution pH, reaction time and initial concentration were studied in batch experiments. The removal efficiency of Co(? ) by spent grains was higher than that of pine sawdust. The initial removal was rapid and equilibrium was established in less than 90 min. Equilibrium data all agreed well with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models for the two metal-biomass sorption processes. Good correlation coefficients were obtained for the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Pine sawdust and spent grains were shown to be promising biosorbents for Co(? ) removal from aqueous solutions.
