Following initial plant scale work on the development and performance of 'spray' oil lances, a full scale room temperature model of the blowpipe-tuyere region of a blast furnace was built to study the basic aerodynamic features of auxiliary fuel injection procedures. Mobilwax 2305 was used as a substitute for Bunker C oil fuel in view of its similar physical properties and the fact that the atomised droplets could be frozen in flight and size, distribution analyses made for various operating procedures. It was shown that secondary atomisation processes far outweighed the importance of any primary atomisation procedures in determining mean Sauter Diameters particularly at high windrates typical of current blast furnace technology. It was also found that good spray dispersions across the blow pipe could only be obtaind for liquid fuels and that the lateral rate of spray dispersion was substantially enhanced by primary atomisation procedures. Mean particle diameters of sprays were found to be predictable on the basis of elementary stability theory and fell within the size range necessary for good combustion at all liquid fuel rates studied. The possible effects of high oil injection rates on flooding phenomena in the furnace bosh were considered. Comparisons show that high oil rates can lead to significant increases in the hanging factor (e.g. 'V 10% at 135 kg oil/thm) owing to increased gas flow rates/thm resulting from the presence of hydrogen.

The production of bituminous coal in Pennsylvania started a few years after that in Virginia. For forty-five years all the production came from the Pittsburgh bed, and since that time its total output in value has exceeded that of any other single mineral deposit in the world. It has been impossible to separate the outputs of the four counties producing it at that time, as none of it came from Greene County until many years later, and the figures in the first column of Table 49 represent all the coal coming from Allegheny, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties. The years prior to 1790 are grouped on account of space limitations, they were made in the same manner as the later ones. All outputs have been rounded into hundreds, or thousands of tons because their accuracy does not warrant further subdivision. All figures are net tons, and all represent production and not shipments; this distinction in the early days when transportation facilities were scarce meant a great deal. In the period 1820-1835, more coal was used in salt-making in western Pennsylvania than for any other single purpose, but not a ton of such coal was handled by any transport agency. Later the iron industry used large quantities of local coal without shipment, and other instances can be cited. Prior to 1832, the only means of shipment of coal, excepting by wagons, was by the rivers, and this tonnage was larger than is generally believed. In Table 23, all of the available data about production from the Pittsburgh bed have been shown. After 1844 the river shipments above Pittsburgh are accurately reported by the Monongahela Navigation Company, but its figures do not include tonnage loaded on the river below Dam No. 1, nor that brought down Saw Mill Run. Prior to 1844 no tonnage records were kept although the amount moved was considerable. The information about local production, not shipped, whether used domestically or for manufacturing is necessarily incomplete. Column 7, shipments by railroad, river and canal, includes the figures in column 4, and until at least 1857 are quite evidently too low. The figures in column 9 are largely estimates based on the data shown and prior to 1870, and perhaps later, are much more likely to be lower, rather than higher, than the actual ones. This table was prepared over a period of years, and as additional data were found the revisions necessary were almost always upward. Clearfield County was the next producer in the state, shipments-in small amounts going down the Susquehanna River; some were made later via the West Branch Canal. Railroad facilities became available in 1862, and the growth in production increased rapidly and steadily. All available data and the estimated totals are in Table 24. Pastefill technology has gained an increasing popularity over the past decade. The main advantages are: environmental performance (mainly in tailings disposal), low operation costs and ease of operation, as well as homogeneous properties. However, its weaker nature compared to other types of fill makes it more vulnerable to blast damage. In the last few years, Louvicourt Mine has experienced some cases of pastefill sloughage during the mining of secondary stopes. In order to reduce pastefill sloughage, some studies have been undertaken to investigate the causes and to find possible solutions by looking at stope design, extraction sequence, ground support and blast design. This paper presents the results of a blast damage study carried out at Louvicourt on the 860m level. The instrumentation included vibration monitors (using 6 sets of triaxial geophones grouted in the pastefill), a borehole camera to observe the damage in the pastefill, and a cavity monitoring system for three-dimensional surveys of the blasted stope. The test stope was mined out by four slot blasts and three mass blasts. Most of the damage was created by the mass blasts. It was found that the accumulation of ground vibration was mainly due to the low seismic velocities in the pastefill and the relatively tight delay between blastholes. In addition, there was a substantial difference between the critical PPV in the confined and unconfined pastefill. In practice, these findings have led to modifications of blast design to minimise the exposure time of pastefill walls to air. Such modifications included changes of blast sequence in secondary stopes and delay layout between heavily loaded blastholes. Over the paste two years, the implementation of new blast sequence has shown encouraging results in terms of reduced pastefill sloughage and dilution.

Peacetime production of mercury in the United States is controlled by world mercury prices, with significant lags to be expected between price increases or decreases and resultant increased or decreased production. Twenty-four mercury-bearing mines and prospects in widely separated districts in western and central Nevada and one property on the Nevada-Oregon border were examined and sampled. The purpose of the project was to determine if some of the properties warranted more extensive exploration work to obtain information on possible reserves of commercial-and sub-commercial-grade ores. The investigation of mercury deposits in Nevada was sufficiently widespread and indicated several areas of interest in the State that merit further exploration work.

Topsoil for revegetation projects is in demand in many urban areas. In this case history, a large aggregate producer manufactured a topsoil from three waste materials. The topsoil was produced in a 200,000 m2 (50-acre) abandoned gravel pit that still had additional gravel under 10 m (30 ft) of overburden uneconomic to strip directly. The topsoil was produced by rotary mixing of sludge, overburden, and a lime admixture; solar drying; and stripping and stockpiling of the product. A major problem was an increase of topsoil drying times for stripping from 40 to over 100 hours when it was rewet by storms. The problem was solved by a research project that evaluated over 50 formulations and over 20 waste materials. . The final formula dried in 15 hours and contained 3-parts sandy mine spoil, 1-part sewage sludge, and 2 % spent-bed, a granular quick-lime produced during power-plant flue-gas desulfurization.

Bentonite Corporation decided to pursue ISO-9002 Registration for our bentonite production for many reasons. We wanted to improve our current Quality System to encompass all business aspects, not just Quality Assurance. We wanted this system to build supplier/customer confidence and provide our customers with all the services that they needed for their business functions: such as Quality Assurance for their needs; appropriate shipping and delivery; appropriate billing; and appropriate sales, technical and management support of our product. These objectives of our Quality System are addressed by the ISO 9000 clauses and requirements. There were additional reasons and expectations for implementing an ISO 9000 Quality System. ISO 9000 registration would develop and aid international sales since the ISO system is a basic requirement in many parts of the world such as Europe and the Far East. It would bring acceptance of bentonite products by new customers and markets Another objective was to develop better trained employees. We hoped that the ISO Quality System would help us reduce costly non-conformances and reduce overall production and operating costs. We hoped to achieve ISO 900 registration before our major customers required it. For example, our major market is use of bentonite as a binder in foundry mold sand systems. The foundries in North America primarily service the automobile manufacturers who have individual Quality System requirements that are being merged with ISO 9000 Standards. As the foundries addressed the automobile manufacturer?s needs, Bentonite Corporation received numerous inquiries and surveys of our Quality System and its conformance with ISO 9000 Standards. Eventually, ISO 9000 Registration will become a requirement to directly or indirectly service this market.

Mines in Queensland must now prepare a Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plan, with the requirement to justify the selection of the post-mining land use (PMLU) for each rehabilitation domain. Given that there are nearly 200 mines who must undertake a comprehensive PMLU assessment, there is a need to develop methods that will minimise the duplication of effort. As part of a broader initiative on innovative post-mining land use planning, this project undertook a regional analysis of the technical suitability of several PMLUs.

This supplement has been prepared to furnish information on amendments to the regulations that were approved by acting secretary of the Interior on June 24, 1946, while this report was in the press. Page 14, item 2, and page 20, item 4, have been amended by the addition of the following footnote: "Pending the development of a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible blasting unit, a blasting unit of Type II, Class A, covered by Federal Specification WB 411, December 31, 1941 (with or without Amendment 2, June 16, 1945), may be used until Decem- ber 31, 1947. Should a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible unit be made available prior to that date, this interim approval may be terminated." Page 14, footnote / has been amended to read as follows: "The use of charges over 1-1/2 pounds and not exceeding 3 pounds is approved pending further investigation. The approval, which may be withdrawn at any time, expires December 31, 1947, unless renewed. For charges over 1-1/2 pounds, the following additional requirements must be observed: (1) Shot holes must be 6 feet or greater in length. (2) Explosives must be charged in a continuous train with no cartridges deliberately deformed or crushed, with all car- tridges in contact with each other, and with the end cartridges touching the rear of the hole and the stemming, respectively. (3) The permissible explosive must be one showing toxic gas omission that will place it in either Class A or Class B."

It's a pleasure to be included with this group. I am not here to sell my services, but rather to share with you some ideas and considerations on using environmental consultants. Environmental consultants have developed some problems as well as created new costs for companies that are as legitimate as engineering costs. Each day the mining industry is becoming more affected by the proliferation of environmental regulations and their interpretations by federal and state agencies. How does a modern mining company cope with all the demands for environmental consideration by regulatory agencies and special interest environmental groups-- yet produce a product and make a profit? One way is to make efficient use of environmental consultants. But, as everyone here knows, this approach has been fraught with seemingly inherent frustrations, difficulties, and much justified criticism.

"The objective of the study conducted by the authors is to determine what media size(s) addition will maximize any given plant ball mill’s grinding efficiency (Fig. 1). The functional performance parameters “mill grinding rate through the size of interest,” and “cumulative mill grinding rates” from both plant and smallscale tests are applied to this task. A plant media sizing methodology, and industrial case studies, are provided.BackgroundA previous article (“Ball mill classification system optimization through functional performance modeling,” Nov. 17, McIvor et al., 2017, Mining Engineering) described circuit classification system efficiency (CSE), equal to the percentage of coarse (plus circuit P80 target size) material in the ball mill. It can be measured and then increased through pump and cyclone adjustments. By so transferring the application of ball mill power from fine (minus P80 product size) to coarse material, circuit efficiency is increased and overgrinding is decreased.The other factor that determines overall circuit efficiency is how well the power that is applied to the coarse material grinds it. This is affected by design and operating variables like the media sizing and mill percent solids. From circuit functional performance (McIvor et al., 1990):Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Power applied to coarse material (kW) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (1)The power applied to coarse material is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. Therefore:Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Total mill power (kW) x CSE (%) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (2) Production rate, mill power and CSE can be measured during a plant circuit survey. The mill grinding rate of coarse material is then calculated. At the circuit target P80 size, this is the mill grinding rate (of coarse material) through the size of interest. The objective is to maximize this rate. The mill grinding efficiency can also be calculated by taking the ratio of the mill grinding rate over the material’s grindability as measured in the lab. Mill percent solids optimization has thusly been achieved (McIvor et al., 2000). For media sizing, maximizing the mill grinding rate on a given ore is equivalent to maximizing the mill grinding efficiency. Ores of different grindability will be part of the discussion."

A CFD based numerical simulation of flow characteristics of hydrocyclone was conducted with different structural and operational parameters to investigate its distribution characteristics and influencing mechanism. The results show there exist several unsymmetrical envelopes of equal vertical velocities among both upward inner flows and downward outer flows in the hydrocyclone, and cone angle and apex diameter have remarkable influence on the vertical location of the cone bottom of the envelop of zero vertical velocity. It is also found that some tangential velocity isolines exist in the horizontal planes located in the effective separation region of hydrocyclone, and feed pressure has almost no effect on the distribution characteristics of both vertical velocity and tangential velocity of flow in hydrocyclone, however the magnitude and gradient of tangential velocity are made increased obviously, so as to make the high density particles motion velocity to the wall increased and to make the cyclonic separation effect improved. The simulation results also show when the apex diameter increased, the pressure of the fluid field decreased, however the pressure grads in the apex district increased, and the degree of changing is different as the cone angle, which showed some interactive influence of cone angle and apex diameter on the fluid field of hydrocyclone. While the feed pressure also has almost no effect on the pressure distribution characteristics, however the its magnitude and gradient are made increased accordingly, which can improve the separation accuracy according to particle density.

The motion of the charge inside a grinding mill is of considerable practical importance. The dynamics of grinding mills have been the subject of study by a number of workers because it can accurately predict: i) the power drawn by the mill, ii) the distribution of forces inside the mill, and hence the wear rate of balls as well as the liners, and iii) mass transport of milled product through the porous ball charge. Some of the earlier analyses of the motion of a charge of particulate material in a tumbling mill were reported by White (1904), Davis (1919), and Dyer (1945) and have been reviewed by Rose and Sullivan (1958). In these works, frictional force at the wall of the mill and between the colliding balls, and the interaction of different ball trajectories, was not considered. Moreover, it was assumed that the profile of the tumbling charge is independent of the degree of filling, which is generally not true. However, all this work led to the identification of so-called "equilibrium surface" which is the plane that separates the rotating charge into two regions. The inner region is static; here there is no motion relative to the mill shell. The other region is a shear region where either the balls flow down the surface of the charge (cascading motion), or are projected out of the surface and follow approximately parabolic paths (cataracting motion).

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. Occasionally, in the design of deep foundations for a structure, a single deep foundation element may be used to support a building column. The most common type of element used in such cases is a drilled shaft (also referred to as a drilled pier, caisson, or bored pile). However, as installation capabilities have improved, large diameter augercast piles are increasingly more common. While drilled shafts and augercast piles differ significantly in construction methods, in the eyes of the International Building Code (IBC), both are treated as cast-in-place deep foundations and must comply with many of the same code provisions. Deep foundations are required to be braced such that lateral stability is provided in all directions, however isolated, cast-in-place elements that have a diameter (D) of at least 2-feet and a length (L) not more than 12 times the diameter can be an exception. In response to the concerns raised by some member professionals, the Deep Foundations Institute’s (DFI) Augered Cast-in-Place Pile and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee took a closer look at the code and its applications, the historical development of the code language through the years and performed analytical modeling to evaluate the impact of this ratio on a pile’s stability. The question is whether the limiting ratio included in the IBC 2018 code provisions is justified, or whether different criteria should be used to determine when isolated deep foundation members are allowed.

"Rare earth minerals are usually concentrated by flotation, magnetic or gravity separation methods to produce concentrates that are subsequently leached with hydrochloric (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or nitric acid (HNO3). About 75 % REEs are lost in gypsum by-product when apatite is dissolved in H2SO4, whereas more than 80% of REE can be extracted from the apatite using HCl and HNO3 leaching processes, respectively. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to find an efficient process of dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from apatite ore by sulfuric acid solution due to its lower cost. In order to optimize the dissolution process, effects of different parameters, namely, concentration of H2SO4 (0.05 – 6 M), solid/liquid phase ratio (1:50 – 1:100), temperature (20 – 80 ºC), agitation speed (300 – 900 rpm), and leaching time (0.5 - 6 h) on the dissolution of REEs from apatite ore were examined in various intervals. The contents of main REEs in the apatite ore used in this study were (as % wt): 3 % La, 6 % Ce, 0.6 % Pr, 2.1 % Nd, 0.2 % Sm and 0.3 % Y. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified fluorapatite and phlogopite as main minerals in the ore. The results obtained from leaching experiments showed that more than 85% of REEs were dissolved from the apatite ore under the optimized conditions, which were: 1 M H2SO4, particle size of -150 + 100 µm, S:L phase ratio of 1:50, agitation speed of 500 rpm at 20 ºC for 1h. The XRD analysis revealed that main mineral compositions of the residues from 1M and 6 M H2SO4 leaching are gypsum (CaSO42H2O) and hemigypsum (CaSO40.5H2O), respectively.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REEs) denote the group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements consisting of the 15 lanthanides, plus yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc) in the periodic table. These metallic elements are generally divided into two sub-groups; (1) the cerium sub-group, which is called “light rare earth elements” (LREEs), includes the elements from lanthanum (La) to europium (Eu), and (2) the yttrium (Y) sub-group elements, which are known as “heavy rare earth elements” (HREEs), are the remaining lanthanides from gadolinium (Gd) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 2005). The REEs occur together in the minerals due to their chemical and physical similarities, which cause problems of separating them from one another (Abreu and Morais, 2014). Although REEs are relatively abundant in the earth’s crust, they are typically dispersed and rarely occur in concentrated forms, making them economically challenging to obtain. There are a wide variety of rare earth minerals, however economic deposits of REEs in mining are bastnasite (La, Ce) FCO3, monazite (Ce, La, Y, Th) PO4, and xenotime YPO4 (Binnemans, 2013; Xie, et al, 2014). Due to the unique physical, chemical, catalytic, electrical, magnetic and optical properties of REEs, demand of these elements has increased dramatically with the advent of new technologies in electronics, communication, construction, energy and medicine (Jordens, et al, 2013). Since 1990, China has provided about 90 % of REEs worldwide. Japan and United States are the largest consumers of China’s REEs. In 2010, China announced to reduce REEs exports to Japan, as it tended to increase prices of REEs and to reduce a stable supply of REEs in the world market (Humphries, 2013). Therefore, there has been an increase in recent exploration activities intended to reveal new commercial sources of REEs and to bring them into production (Antico, et al, 1996). Apatite is an important host mineral for REEs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and can be used as an ore for those metals (Kanazawa and Kamitani, 2006). Apatite is also the main source of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid (Habashi, 2013; Emsbo, 2015)."

Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

The history of coal mining in the United States of America and the rest of the world is replete with mine explosions and consequent loss of lives. Serious efforts in the USA to recover methane prior to mining and post mining started about forty years ago. CONSOL Energy Inc. and government agencies, e.g., the erstwhile US Bureau of Mines developed several techniques of methane drainage, such as in-mine horizontal drilling, vertical gob wells, hydrofracing of vertical wells and horizontal drilling from surface. With the current technology, thirty to sixty percent of total methane emissions from a mine can be captured making the mines much safer and more productive. Drained methane is often marketed to defray the cost of methane drainage. This paper is an anthology of these developments and describes how coalbed methane, which used to be a bane, has become a boon for the coalmining industry.

ORDERED G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure were found to exist in the bcc iron-rich grains of an Fe-Au-Cu alloy that had been supersaturated with approximately equal atomic percentages of gold and copper, and aged at 400° and 350°C. Streaks and superlattice spots in electron diffraction patterns revealed the presence of the ordered zones in the aged material. The ordered Ll2 structure is commonly found for precipitates in fcc metals (e.g., Ni3A1 in nickelL7') but it is uncommon to find precipitates in bcc metals having the cesium chloride structure. The formation of the G.P. zones caused age hardening of the grains. Samples containing 3.8 at. pct each of gold and copper (with the remainder being iron) were annealed at 95@ or 1125°C in quartz capsules and were quenched by breaking the capsules under water. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed two solid solutions in the quenched samples. One solid solution was bcc and the other was fcc. The microstructure consisted of iron-rich grains of 0.3 mm diam surrounded by a yellow gold-copper-rich grain boundary network. The Au-Cu phase diagram %hows continuous solid solubility of gold and copper with ordered phases forming below 410°C. None of the ordered Au-Cu phases have the cesium chloride structure. Both Fe-Au and Fe-Cu phase diagrams3 show extended miscibility gaps and only terminal solid-solution phases. Consequently, it is reasonably certain the iron-rich grains consisted of an a-phase terminal solid solution, and the grain boundary network consisted of a gold-copper-rich terminal solid solution. Lattice parameters of the quenched solid solutions were consistent with the suggestion that the quenched phases were terminal solutions. The lattice parameter of the bcc phase (2.879A) obtained upon quenching from 950°C was higher than that (2.866A) for pure iron. The fcc phase in this sample had a lower lattice parameter than that for a 50 at. pct Au and 50 at. pci Cu solid solution, i.e., 3.866 compared to 3.877A. The lattice parameter for the 50 pct Au and 50 pct Cu solid solution was interpolated from data for Cu-Au solid solutions.4 More gold and copper were soluble in iron at 1125°C than at 950°C as indicated by a 0.012A increase in the bcc lattice parameter for a sample quenched from 1125°C. After the alloy had been quenched from 950° and 1125°C, the bcc lattice parameters were 2.879 and 2.891A1 respectively G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure-which formed during low-temperature aging—were detected by electron diffraction and observed with electron transmission microscopy. In Fig. 1, the asymmetrical streaks parallel to ( 100) directions indicate that platelike G.P. zones had formed parallel to (100) planes of the matrix. The direction of streak asymmetry shows that the bcc unit cell of the G.P. zones was larger than the bcc cell of the matrix. The ordered cesium chloride structure is indicated by low-intensity superlattice spots at 010 positions which are nonallowed for bcc structures. The superlattice spots are streaked; therefore they are from the G.P. zones and are not caused by rel-rod effects of a thin matrix phase. The appearance and size of the zones observed in electron transmission microscopy and the appearance of the asymmetrical streaks in the electron diffraction patterns for the Fe-Au-Cu alloy were the same as those observed for a similarly treated Fe-Au alloy.'
