Discussion by J. Parker Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa(4000 and 7000psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic'? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Were tests run to find out how that rock responded to the addition of moisture, from sprays or from humid air? Did moisture weaken the rock? Did it cause the rock to expand quickly, thus to induce internal compressive stress? How can the near-vertical cutters, as shown in the photographs, be attributed to primarily horizontal stresses? Did the cutters follow any particular pattern in the development panels, which might be related to a particular stress pattern? For example, did they always appear alongside the stiffest pillar? Or always along the northwest rib? Was there any evidence of the pillars and entries "rotating" under the influence of differential horizontal stresses? How much did the entries and pillars rotate as the longwall face approached and passed? After rooffalls, did the openings assume shapes which would indicate a preferred shape in that stressfield and geology? Did crosscuts always survive without damage, as shown in the sketch?

The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

This report describes the results of laboratory studies on leaching of copper ores.tlf These studies are the first step of a program for the investigation of in situ leaching of tabular, metalliferous ore bodies.(2) The basic steps required in the development of an in situ process are: 1. Leachability - the ability to dissolve the metal values from the ore under in situ conditions must be demonstrated. 2. Ore Preparation - the ore must be prepared so that sufficient contact with the solution can be attained. 3. System Design - integrated in situ systems must be designed and studied for engineering feasibility. 4. Economic Feasibility - the economics of the system must be shown to be economically feasible and competitive. 5. Environmental Feasibility - the loss of reagents into the environment must be investigated. 6. Pilot Scale Testing - the feasibility of the system must be demonstrated on a sufficiently large scale. The studies described in this report were concerned only with the first step of the program, viz., leachability. Native and sulfide copper ores from the Michigan copper district were selected as model ores for these studies. Aqueous amnonia solutions were chosen as the solvents to be investigated. In this study carbonate (CO3, HCO3, H2CO3) was used exclusively as the anion. In keeping with custom it is referred to as carbon dioxide and concentrations are ex- pressed in terms of CO2. In this paper various hybrid modelling architectures are proposed for the modelling and metallurgical control of pyrometallurgical reactors. Discussed are architectures in which data reconciliation is combined by thermochemical, neural net and dynamic modelling to improve the models. At the same time the data reconciliation models can act as soft-sensors for estimating unmeasurable data. Cases that are discussed are (i) the modelling of a submerged arc furnace for the production of thermal phosphorous, (ii) the processing of Sn-Pb-Zn flue dust (originating from secondary copper) in a hearth furnace, (iii) modelling of a steel converter, and (iv) dynamic modelling of a flash smelter.

Surfaces of rock slopes in cold regions often become frozen in winter. Therefore, understanding time-dependent behavior of frozen rock, as well as that of unfrozen rock, is important for long-term stability assessment of rock slopes. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and creep tests were carried out on Shikotsu welded tuff under dry and water-saturated conditions at -20 °C to clarify timedependent strength and deformation of the frozen rock. The influence of water content on them also was investigated. It was found that the amount of deformation of the water-saturated specimen was much greater than that of the dry specimen. It also was found that the creep behavior of the water-saturated specimen was similar to that of polycrystalline ice. These show that deformation of the water-saturated specimen is strongly affected by pore ice. The UCS of the water-saturated specimen was approximately equal to that of the dry specimen at a strain rate below 4.2×10-6/s, and its value was about 17 MPa. However, the former increased up to 26 MPa at 4.2×10-4/s with loading rate, whereas there was little increase in the latter. This means that the UCS of the water-saturated specimen was always greater than that of the dry specimen at higher strain rates. The creep life of water-saturated specimens was longer than that of the dry specimens at stress level greater than 15 MPa. These results of UCS and creep life show that inclusion effect due to presence of pore ice plays an important role on strength of the water-saturated specimen. Creep life of the non-failure specimen that was loaded for more than three days was estimated by the relationship between creep life and axial strain rate at 10 s on failure specimens. It was found that creep life of the water-saturated specimens was shorter than that of the dry specimen at stress levels less than 14 MPa. This suggests that estimation of creep life of frozen rock under water-saturated condition is important for the stability assessment of frozen rock slopes. It was clear that the loading-rate dependency of UCS was related to the stress-level dependency of creep life in both dry and wet conditions. This indicates that there are common fracture mechanism in creep and uniaxial compression tests. It also indicates that the creep life can be estimated by the relationship between the UCS and the loading rate. The time dependencies of the water-saturated specimen were in good agreement with those of polycrystalline ice. This confirms that pore ice strongly affects the strength of the water-saturated specimens as, well as the deformation behavior.

Faced with rapid growth that strained their current water supply capabilities, the Somerset Water Service in Somerset, KY decided to construct a new intake structure on the shore of Lake Cumberland. With an existing intake structure within 200', very hard limestone geology with calcite geodes, and lake level fluctuations as high as 50 ' ,this project posed many challenges. The following paper discusses how mechanical excavation techniques were used to overcome these obstacles.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.

The tensile properties of DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different amounts of PALF fibers were evaluated. Composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of long, continuous and aligned PALF fibers were tested in an Instron machine at room temperature. The fracture was analyzed by SEM. This one revealed a weak fiber/matrix interface, which could be responsible for the performance of some properties. The results showed significant changes in the mechanical properties with the amount of PALF fibers.

Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers, and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both cleanup labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and en- dangering personnel and conveyor components, including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply an operation's hidden costs-the dollars lost because of missed production, of increased downtime, of the expense for the replacement of prematurely worn or damaged equipment. In this paper, the author will examine the importance of belt conveyors to mines and process plants He will trace the state-of-the-art in systems for cleaning belts, and controlling the release of fugitive material from conveyor transfer points, by exploring the roots of the problems, and demonstrating solutions that have been proven to be effective. Included in these systems to improve material handling are transfer point stabilization and sealing systems, dual belt cleaning systems, and belt training idlers.

This investigation examined the feasibility of altering the inorganic component of North Dakota lignite by ion exchange. Lignite of specific size consist was washed with various ionic solutions and examined for evidence of exchange. Ions of higher valance substituted preferentially at equivalent concentrations. Results indicate that a major portion of the inorganic material associated with lignite is combined in exchangeable form with the organic component. Particle size of the treated coal is a critical factor in determining the rate of exchange. The data indicate that monovalent ions are easily replaced by divalent and trivalent ions, and the presence of ionic material in slurries containing finely divided lignite significantly increases filtration rates.

A study was made of the effects of temperature, type of loading, and electric polarization on the fracturing behavior of copper and zinc coated with mercury. Copper showed an em-brittlement only in cyclic loading, whereas zinc showed an em-brittlenzent in both static and cyclic loading. The embrittle-ment of zinc in static loading was prevented by sub-zero cooling to a temperatzcre of about -70°F. The emhrittlement of both metals was sliglztly reduced by cathodic polarization of mercury. The basic processes involved in fracturing were discussed in the light of these observations. When a solid metal is in contact with certain liquid metals possessing high wetting characteristics, a weakening effect is produced, and the solid metal fractures in brittle manner at a relatively low stress. This lowering of the fracture stress generally is considered different from the stress cracking caused by a corrosive liquid environment and is attributed to the lowering of the solid-liquid interface tension at the grain boundaries.1-4 The purpose of this paper is to describe a number of observations on the special features of fracturing of copper and zinc coated with a liquid mercury film, and to analyze the basic processes involved in fracturing in the light of these observations. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS I) Effect of Type of Loading—The evidence appears to indicate that in static loading, metals usually fracture by the initiation of microcracks in the interior preferentially at the grain boundaries or at the intersection of slip bands.' In cyclic loading, cracks develop on the surface within the active slip zones, and gradually propagate with increasing num- ber of cycles.6'7 Because of this difference in the manner of initiation of cracks, a series of bare and mercury coated copper and zinc specimens was subjected to static and cyclic loading, and their fracturing behavior was examined. The specimens were machined to 0.25 in. in diam and 1 in. in length from a high-purity commercial bar stock, and annealed at an appropriate temperature. Mercury was applied to the surface of the specimens by rubbing with cotton wool soaked in a saturated solution of HgCl2 or by etching with a dilute solution of HC1 and rubbing with purified mercury and by washing in water. The static tension load-extension curves were obtained by means of a Riele Screw Power Universal Testing Machine. The room-temperature load-extension curves for copper and zinc are shown in Fig. 1. The deformation behavior of copper, as judged from the general configuration of the load-extension curve, was not affected by mercury coating. The maximum load to fracture and the elongation at the maximum load were practically the same for both specimens. The mercury coated copper, however, showed somewhat less localized necking and had smaller reduction of area than the uncoated metal. Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

"Laboratory study of the behaviour• of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of ""reactive"" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen. Proceeding from this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which non-caking hvb coal was substantially freed of reactive oxygen by prior heat t1•eatment under controlled conditions. The results indicate that such blends can yield surprisingly strong cokes and that coke strength may be amenable to further improvements by modifying the size distribution of the pre-heated component and the rate at which it is charred."

Metal parts are traditionally processed by either filly-liquid (e.g., casting) or filly-solid (e.g., forging) state. Semi-solid metal forming incorporates elements of both casting and forging. In 1991, Gunasekera(5) developed a model illustrating the influence of flow stress by the liquid fraction. The result fits Kiuchi's (1979)(7) experimental data quite well. This model assumed the liquid part is surrounded by solid as small pockets inside the material, which is opposite to the real practical situation. Since the melting usually first happens at the grain boundary, it is better to treat the semi-solid material as small metal crystal surrounded by liquid.

"Spodumene mineral is a source of lithium for lithium ion batteries. Thus, the production of a spodumene concentrate with an approximate grade of 6% Li2O is targeted. Traditionally, spodumene is concentrated by froth flotation using fatty acid as the collector. Amine collector can also be used to float mica ahead of spodumene as required or feldspar from the spodumene tailings. Slimes have a negative effect on spodumene flotation and they are commonly separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to spodumene flotation. The main losses in spodumene flotation typically occur in cyclone overflow, scrubbing slimes, spodumene flotation tailings and mica concentrate. In recent years, dense media separation (DMS) is the main concentrating process in Australian spodumene operations. In these operations, DMS is efficient at generating coarse grain concentrates and rejecting large portions of silicate gangue, thereby directly reducing the milling cost. The ore should be crushed to 3/8” or coarser while further crushing is possibly necessary on the middling particles to scalp further spodumene. The DMS feed should be classified to remove fines (typically -0.5 mm particles). The final middlings and undersize fractions could then be processed by flotation. The main requirement in DMS operations is to have good spodumene liberation at relatively large grain size. This paper reviews the most significant DMS and flotation parameters in spodumene beneficiation. The treatments of different minerals in the spodumene ore are also addressed.INTRODUCTION A number of laboratory/pilot plant programs have been recently conducted at the SGS Lakefield site, sponsored by different clients. The main objective has been to develop a process flowsheet to generate a spodumene concentrate containing 6.0% or higher Li2O (~75% spodumene) suitable for producing lithium carbonate by a hydrometallurgical process. Depending on spodumene liberation size, dense media separation (DMS) can be an attractive option to produce a final high grade concentrate and to reduce the mass to be treated in the flotation circuit. In such a case, crushing would typically be performed in stages, with DMS separation to recover a spodumene concentrate and reject gangue minerals following each stage. DMS middlings and -0.5 mm fines can be processed by flotation to further recover spodumene. In the flotation process, coarse stage grinding minimizes the grinding cost and formation of slimes. In the majority of cases, a grind size (K80) of approximately 200 microns is sufficient for flotation. After primary grinding, mica, if present in an appreciable amount, should be floated to minimize interference with spodumene flotation. Desliming after scrubbing and high density conditioning are the key process operations prior to spodumene flotation. Spodumene can then be floated from silicate gangue minerals with a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate at slightly alkaline pH. Subsequently, feldspars can then be floated from the spodumene tailings."

Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

"The concentration of the fourth production line at Golgohar includes 66% iron with Blaine number of 500 cm2/g. For pelletizing process, the feed iron grade should be greater than 68% with minimum Blaine number of 1800 cm2/g. In this study, the low intensity magnetic Separators, particularly the feed particle size distribution of LIMS were considered. The feed particle size distribution of the separators was optimized to prepare an appropriate concentrate (as mill pelletizing feed). The samples were performed from the LIMS feed and after grinding, four d80 (64, 103, 132, and 15 3µm) were prepared. Then, laboratory magnetic separation experiments were conducted on these samples. The best results obtained using d80 of 132µm. In this particle fraction, the iron grade and Blaine number were 70.3% and 1571 cm2/g, respectively. Therefore, it seems necessary to include a grinding and classification systems before LIMS stage. According to the presence of a high amount of -132 µm particles in the initial feed, an inverse closed circuit was selected. The hydrocyclone was designed in three units as the classification system with 62 cm (diameter), 22 cm (overflow outlet) and 11 cm (apex diameter). By simulation of hydrocyclone with USIMPAC software, the size distribution of underflow was determined. Based on these results, a ball mill with dimensions of 6.7 m (length) and 5 m (diameter) was designed as grinding system.INTRODUCTIONGole-Gohar iron ore concentration plant No.4 (Polycom Plant) in Gole-Gohar Industrial and Mining Complex was installed to increase production capacity as well as treating the circulating load from AG and SAG mills of the main concentration plant of the complex. The load from the mine is crushed using jaw and cone crushers. The crushed ore is then combined with the circulated load and the combination is then grounded using HPGR and ball mills respectively.After comminution, there is a magnetic separation plant which includes a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) followed by three low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Final concentrate dewatering is done using three belt filters. After the primary magnetic separation, the ore is upgraded to 62% Fe content and final concentrate which is the product of LIMS has 66% Fe content."
